Dear Members,
Greetings to all esteemed members of AMI! Two full terms will be completed since I have taken over as General Secretary, Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI), one of the reputed academic bodies in India. I sincerely thank to all office bearers of AMI and all the members of AMI for showing the confidence in me and extending the support in AMI activities. I assure every one of you that I alongwith office bearers and Central Council members are dedicated to serve AMI and hope to come up to your expectations.
All members are requested to visit the new website of AMI and update their address/ email. The ID cards are also issued to members enrolled till March, 2019, now we are issuing ID cards on six monthly basis. Our Association has entered in 80th years of its existence now and our association has been succeeding academically fine. Our official journal, Indian Journal of Microbiology (INJM) is on track of achieving greater height and now published under the banner of Springer Nature which adds laurel to AMI. Our Editor, Dr. VC Kalia has created a new milestone and the impact of our journal has a steady progression.
We welcome of new AMI President, a noted academician, Prof. J.S. Virdi, former Professor at University of Delhi South Campus. Prof. Virdi has won the many awards like Discovery Award, UK, Lab Mentor Award, US, BIRAC AMR Ideathon Prize, India, ICMR Award, India etc. We also welcome, President Elect-2019, Prof. Yogendra Singh, Professor at University of Delhi who is one of the renowned microbiologist of the country.
Further, AMI has entered into memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Association of Microbiologists of India (AMI) and International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) in 2018. I am also delighted to inform you that Academy of Microbiological Sciences (AMSc) is planning few innovative activities under founder chairmanship of Prof. R.C. Kuhad who is also serving as Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Haryana where we are organizing 60th Annual AMI Conference under his able leadership and guidance. The fellows are elected as FAMSc and w.e.f. the year 2016 and the rules and regulations as approved by Executive council of Academy and GB of AMI are available on AMI website.
Further, it has been decided to award the travel fellowship to research scholars/ students who are not availing any fellowship. The students can apply as per information available on website by 31st August, 2019. AMI website has all user friendly option where members can create their user ID and create their profile. I request all members to browse through the AMI website and can ask website support team for their queries.
We acknowledge the commendable activities put forth by AMI office bearers and members of central council.

This is indeed our pleasure to inform you that the 60th Annual Conference of AMI will be organized from November 15th-18th, 2019 at the Central University of Haryana, Mahendergarh - 123031, India. You are cordially invited to attend the 60th Annual Conference of AMI and participate in various scientific deliberations and AMI activities. Abstracts of the papers for presentation are to be prepared in short, not exceeding 300 words and indicating the name of the author presenting the paper. The posters are to be prepared strictly according to the size, the details of which will be informed in the Second Circular by the Organizing Secretary of the 60th Annual Conference of AMI. The details about last date for submitting the abstracts and registration fee will be notified in the second circular. AMI- AWARDSNominations for AMI Awards: As approved by the Central Council (C.C.) of AMI in Its 4th meeting held on March 9th, 2019 at Committee Room, International Guest House, University of Delhi, New Delhi, the nominations are invited for the following awards* before 31st August, 2019 to be awarded during 60th Annual Conference of AMI at Central Univeristy of Haryana, Mahendergarh – 123031, Haryana, India.

1. AMI-Prof. G. S. Rangaswamy Award (Biennial) :
The AMI Prof. Rangaswamy award is open to all AMI members. Applicants should be 50 years but not older than 65 years and should be a member of the AMI of long standing (at least 10 years). He/she should have contributed significantly for the development of Agricultural Microbiology, in India or abroad as demonstrated by his work and publications. The award will include a cash of ` 45,000/- and a citation. The awardee shall present his/her contribution during the conference.
2. AMI Young Scientist Awards (Annual) :
The association shall give out one award each in Agricultural Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Medical & Veterinary Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology, Dairy & Food Microbiology and Environmental Microbiology to young Microbiologists of India. Applicants should be less than 35 years of age on the last date of submission of the nominations, and must have demonstrated their ability as microbiologists and should be a member of the Association at the time of nomination. The awards will be given during the annual conference of AMI. The awardees will be required to make a brief presentation of the work for which they are rewarded. The each award will include a cash of ` 10,000/- and a citation.
3. AMI- Best Poster Awards (Annual) :
The award shall be given to the best poster presented in each of the following areas of Microbiology such as Agricultural Microbiology, Industrial Microbiology, Medical & Veterinary Microbiology, Molecular Microbiology and

Biotechnology, Dairy & Food Microbiology and Environmental Microbiology during the 60th Annual Conference of AMI. Each award will include a cash award of ̀ 2,500/- and a certificate. The procedure for selection shall involve review of the various posters by an expert committee jointly selected by the organizers and the C.C. AMI. Their decision will be final.
4. AMI- Dr. R.S. Rana Memorial Best Poster Award (Annual) : This award shall be given to the overall Best Poster presented at the 60th Annual Conference of AMI. All Posters presented at the 60th Annual Conference are entitled to compete. The award will consist of a cash of ` 5,000/- and a certificate. The procedure for selection shall involve review of the various posters by an expert committee jointly selected by the organizers and the C.C. AMI. Their decision will be final.
5. AMI Best Unit Award : AMI units which are active will be awarded suitably by the AMI with a cash award and certificate to be decided by the Central Council of AMI. The selected unit will receive an award in the form of a certificate/ citation mentioning all the details of the unit/chapter and a Cash prize of ` 7000/-, ` 5000/- & ` 4000 to the Ist, IInd and IIIrd Prize holders. The award will be given at the time of the annual General Body meeting and will have to be received by an officer of the unit. No TA/DA will be provided to Unit office bearers to attend GB meeting.
6. AMI-Prof. J.V. Bhat award* for the Best paper published in Indian Journal of Microbiology (Annual)
Since the Journal is open to all to publish their papers, there shall be no restriction for being a member of the Association. All papers published in the Indian Journal of Microbiology during the preceding year shall be considered for the award. The award will consist of a cash award of ` 5000/- and a citation. The two awards should be given by the AMI based on scopus indexed citations only. The awards can be given to one review article and one original research article.

7. AMI-Travel grants : The AMI may support travel grants to young life members of AMI (below the age of 35), for participating 60th annual conference of AMI, whose papers have been accepted for presentation at the AMI conference.

Detailed guidelines are available on AMI website. The travel grants shall cover IIIrd AC class Railway fares by the shortest route. The funds for this shall come from interest from funds earmarked for this purpose. The number of travel grants available will depend on the funds available and the GS, based on regional distribution, shall make primary scrutiny before placing to CC for approval. Those interested in utilizing this facility should inform the General Secretary of AMI soon after their paper is accepted, at the conference, along with a copy of the paper and the acceptance letter. AMI may also consider granting partial travel assistance and registration fees to one or two members to facilitate them to attend the International conference recognized by AMI. Full details will be worked out by the Central council after a corpus has been developed for this purpose.
8. Procedure of nomination for (1) AMI-Prof. G.S. Rangasamy Award (Biennial), (2) AMI-Louis Pasteur Award (Triennial), (3) Young Scientist Awards
Each nomination should be accompanied by complete details as per format available on website of AMI alongwith proof flagged. Each nomination for the awards at Sr. No. 1, 2, 3 shall be proposed by two Life members of AMI and for the awards at Sr. No.3 the nomination may be forwarded by the Head of the Department/Major Advisor. The last date to receive the soft copy of the nomination as a single PDF file alongwith publications and proofs as a separate file by email (Mention Subject line- AWARD NAME_ APLLICANT NAME) at [email protected] is 31st August, 2019, and one printed copy + the soft copy on a CD by post to Prof. Pratyoosh Shukla, General Secretary, AMI, Head, Department of Microbiology, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak-124001, Haryana, India.

9. Fellow of Academy of Microbiological Sciences (FAMSc) :
The fellowship nominations are invited for election of Fellow of Academy of Microbiological Sciences (FAMSc), earlier called as FAMI, for the year 2019. In all sets of nominations complete in all respects should reach to the Prof. R.C. Kuhad, Chairman, Academy of Microbiological Sciences,

Vice-Chancellor, Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh, Haryana - 123031 latest by 16th August, 2019. The nominee should check the rules for eligibility and apply accordingly. 11. Invitation of bids to host the 61st & 62nd Annual Conference of AMI
In order to plan in advance, CC in its meeting on January 9, 2019 decided to initiate steps for the hosting of the next annual conference of AMI and accordingly decided to invite bids for hosting the 61st (2020) & 62nd (2021) Annual Conference of AMI scheduled to be held in the latter half of 2020 and 2021. All the registered units are requested to send their bid applications through their head of institutions/Vice Chancellor including theme of conference, tentative program and suggested dates for the conference. The bid application should also include basic facilities planned for the participants of the conference and other amenities for the venue. The complete application should be forwarded by the President of the Unit on or before 31st August 2019 to the address given below:

Minutes of the 59th General Body (GB) meeting held at Auditorium-1, Z.H.C, University of Hyderabad, Telangana, on 10.12.2018 at 12:20 PM.
1. The 59th General Body (GB) Meeting of AMI was held on December 10, 2018 at 12.20 PM in the Auditorium-1, Z.H.C, University of Hyderabad, Telangana. The list of members present in the meeting is appended at Annexure -I.
2. General Secretary, Prof. P. Shukla welcomed all the members of the AMI present at the GB meeting and initiated the proceedings with permission of the President, AMI, Prof. Appa Rao Podile. The GS briefed the GB about the major developments in AMI since the last GB meeting held at BBAU, Lucknow, during the 58th Annual conference of AMI.
3. GS, presented the minutes of 58th GB meeting held at BBAU, Lucknow on 18.11.2017 that was circulated alongwith the first circular of the 59th Annual Conference of AMI. Dr. B. Bhima proposed that the minutes be approved and Dr. Naveen Gupta seconded the proposal. The GB approved the minutes.
4. GS presented the annual report of the AMI and the proceedings of the CC meetings held during the year (2018-2019) that was circulated to the members of the GB attending the meeting.
5. Prof. P. Shukla, GS then briefed the GB about the progress made by the Association and the activities of the association during the year. Many new members have enrolled themselves with the Association during the year and the latest number of life members stands at 4798. The Association has successfully submitted its income tax return for the assessment year 2018-19. It’s annual book of accounts has also been audited by the auditors employed by the GB of the association.
6. The General Secretary informed that at the time of holding of the GB meeting, more than 10 AMI units have submitted their report on their activities. He briefed the GB that many other units are not very regular in sending their reports to the Central Unit. which is mandatory. GB took a serious view of the issue and asked the GS to send letters to the units informing them that the units might be derecognised in case they are not active in submitting their reports and office bearer details on time. The GS also informed the GB about the appreciation awards (Certificates and mementos) being given to

the all the AMI Units which are sending their reports in time. The GS further informed that in order to facilitate and encourage the award winning unit (Ist Prize only), the AMI CC has approved the Travelling allowance (TA) of one official of the unit for attending the AMI Conference in the current year. GB praised this move and the same was approved.
It was further resolved by the GB that the Ist Award winning AMI Unit will be provided with TA as per AMI rules for receiving the Award and participate in Award function during the future GB meetings, subject to availability of funds and with prior information to GS.
7. As per the listed agenda, General Secretary, then announced the AMI Awards for the year 2018. The name of the recipients of the following awards of AMI was placed and approved by the GB on recommendations from the CC:

4. AMI-ALEMBIC AWARD - 2018
None found suitable. Three applications were found ineligible and only one application was eligible and was not recommended by the expert.

This was was recommended for the award.
The CC also resolved that in future, two awards should be given by the AMI based on Scopus indexed citations only. The awards can be given to one review article and one original research article. GB approved the proposal to be effective from 2019.

7. AMI Best unit award:
A. First prize for the ‘AMI award for the best unit was given to Panjab University Chandigarh, Unit.
B. Second prize for the ‘AMI award for the best unit was given to the AMI-Bangalore Unit based at Dayananda Sagar Institutions, Bangalore, Karnataka.
C. Third prize is given jointly to AMI-Rohtak Unit and AMI-Pune Unit.
The GB congratulated all the awardees on their achievements and the awardees were felicitated as per customs of the AMI.
8. The General Secretary’s report was subsequently proposed for approval by Prof. Gopal Reddy and seconded by Prof. S. K. Khare. The GB has approved the same.
9. The Treasurer, AMI then presented the audited report of financial accounts of the AMI, enrollment of new members and financial help extended to various AMI units to conduct activities of the units for popularization of Microbiology in the country. He mentioned that the Association is in good financial health and total fund available with AMI, including fixed deposits as on 19.11.2018 is Rs. 2,43,71,548/-. He also mentioned that income tax return for the assessment year 2018-19 has already been submitted.
1. Total fund in AMI A/C Rs. 1,55,58,149.07/- dated 19.11.2018.
2. Fixed deposit in PNB, Delhi is Rs. 63, 31,498.00/- dated 19.11.2018.
3. From April 1st 2018 to November 20th, 2018, 118 Annual Membership applications have been received.
4. From January 1st 2018 to November 20th, 2018, 121 Life Membership applications have been received and approved. Currently, total Life Membership stands at 4785.
5. The financial contribution of INJM to AMI is the Royalty of Rs. 18,14,645/- for INJM (2017-2018) received from Springer Nature.
6. Requirement of Permanent office of AMI Delhi for getting GST No. etc.

The treasurer informed the GB that as per the report, the Utilization Certificates and audited statements from Organizing Secretary, AMI 2015 has not yet been received even after repeated reminders and e-mails. Prof. Pabbi informed the GB that he is still reminding the organizers and he will keep the GB posted about its progress. The GB took a serious view of it and asked the GS and Treasurer to take necessary action to settle the issue.
Prof. S.S. Dudeja, GJUS&T, Hisar and Prof. L.V. Rao, Osmania University, Hyderabad sought clarification on details of accounts statement that was explained by the Treasure. The report of the Treasurer was subsequently proposed for approval by Prof. Rup Lal and seconded by Prof. Prince Sharma.
10. The Editor-in-Chief of INJM Prof. (Dr.) V.C. Kalia sent his report and the GS read the report on his behalf. In the report EiC highlighted that the Indian Journal of Microbiology (INJM), the official organ of AMI, has been making impressive progress and is serving as a mouthpiece of global researchers in the discipline. The progress has been possible because of the high quality contributions of Authors, and the dedicated efforts of the Editors and Reviewers of the journal and M/s Springer Nature.
A few highlights of the progress made by INJM during the past one year are:
• AlltheissuesofINJMduringthelast10yearshavebeenpublished in a timely manner. Papers are published on line within 7-10 days after acceptance. In 2018, 700 articles (as on 20.11.2018) have been received and processed. There is no backlog of any kind on any front.
• TheImpactfactorofINJMhasbeenimprovingsteadilyduringthelast few years: 1.143 for 2015, 1.290 for 2016, 1.310 for 2017 (Released on 26th June 2018) and is expected to improve in future.
• Thetotalnumberofcitations/yearisalsoshowinganupwardstrend. It has increased from 835 in 2015 to 1032 in 2017, the highest so far.
• ThehighlightoftheprogressmadebyIndianJournalofMicrobiology (INJM) is the fact that there are 40 papers (Published during 2007- 2017), with more than 50 cites each (Google Scholar) (The highest being 240 cites).

Editorial Board of INJM acknowledged the contributions of Authors, Reviewers, Editors and AMI family in enhancing the value of INJM and its continued progress. The Board hopes that the highlights of the progress made by INJM will enable the AMI family to evaluate the quality of scientific contribution of INJM. The acceptance rate of the articles submitted to INJM for the last few years ranged between 7 to 9%. The financial contribution of INJM to AMI as royalty to an amount of Rs. 18,14,645.00 for INJM (2017-2018) received from Springer Nature may also be appreciated.
The GS informed the GB that INJM is likely to scale greater heights in future under the able leadership of its EiC, Dr. VC Kalia. There was all round applause in the GB of the hard work done by the Editor-in-Chief and his team. The reports of the Editor-in-Chief were proposed for approval by Prof. T. Satyanarayana and seconded by Prof. Gopal Reddy.
11. In the next agenda item, Dr. Amulya K. Panda, Convener, AMSc, presented the approval of the Executive committee (EC) of AMSc, duly recommended by the Fellow Selection Committee (FSC) recommendations, for awarding the fellowship for 2018 by the Academy of Microbiological Sciences. The same is listed below:

The GB approved the recommendation of the Executive Committee of AMSc. The GB congratulated the Fellows elected to the Academy of Microbiological Sciences during the year.

12. The result of the election for the Post of President Elect- 2019 was declared by the General Secretary approved earlier by the CC. With the able guidance from the CC under the leadership of the President, AMI and in the exercise of the responsibilities enshrined in the constitution of AMI, the General Secretary acted as the Returning Officer for the election for the President Elect-2019. The election process was held on time and all formalities for the election including inviting nominations, scrutiny of the nomination etc. were duly followed up. Prof. Yogendra Singh, Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Delhi, Delhi was elected unopposed as President Elect-2019. The GB approved the same.
Prof. Singh was congratulated by the GB and the GS informed that Prof. Y. Singh is a noted microbiologist of the country. He also informed the GB that Prof. Singh has won many awards like prestigious Moselio Schaechter Distinguished Service Award from ASM (2014), Rockefeller Career Development Award etc.

While finalizing the proposal for holding the 60th Annual conference of AMI, the GS informed that the proposal of Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh for organizing 60th Annual AMI Conference was received from AMI CUH Unit through the office of the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. R.C. Kuhad. The proposal was approved earlier by the CC. The GB approved the same and it was unanimously decided that the 60th Annual AMI Conference i.e. AMI-2019 will be held at the Central University of Haryana, Mahendragarh, India. The GB advised GS to inform the organizers for necessary preparations and information on the proposed dates for AMI-2019.
Dr. K.K. Dubey from AMI-CUH Unit was then invited to extend invitation to all the esteemed members of AMI for AMI-2019. Dr. Dubey informed the GB, that Hon’ble VC, Prof. R.C. Kuhad has conveyed best wishes to all AMI Members and he invites all to participate in this mega event.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between International Society for Microbial Ecology (ISME) with AMI was approved by GB alongwith the AMI-ISME Joint scientific session and workshop funded by ISME Regional Development funds of 10501 Euro as approved by the CC. The GS, informed the GB that the MoU is in line with ASM and MSK MoUs as approved by GB previously and this MoU is now approved by ISME Board members as well.

15. Finally, Prof. P. Shukla, General Secretary thanked Prof. Appa Rao Podile, President, AMI, Central Council members, Past Presidents of AMI for satisfactorily conducting the meeting and all the AMI members for their active participation and whole-hearted support.
16. In his final remarks, Prof. Appa Rao Podile, President, AMI expressed his full satisfaction for completing the discussion on all the agenda items and taking significant decisions in a definite time-bound manner. He also appreciated the successful conduct of AMI, 2018.
