Those of us alive today take it for granted that we will be surrounded in our daily lives by mass-produced industrial goods. The main objects of my observations are man-made items of this ilk; within them, to my mind, human desire and reason coexist, a characteristic they share with my own inner self. This series of twelve-necked guitars, taking as its theme my contradictory feelings of admiration and jealousy toward guitarists, originated in an attempt to take the energy of rock and convert it to sculpture, and developed into an actual space based on images inspired by the “copy & paste” function on computers. Arc Type, displayed here, is inspired by the idea of a byobu screen expressing Western culture as seen in rock music. The byobu screen is a Japanese approach to painting, and seen another way, has a sculptural structure. In that sense, for me also, it seems less a solid construction, than a work conscious of space. Rather than wrestling with any arcane theory, just use your eyes to look, and imagine what the sound of this guitar might be. Yoshihiko Satoh Present Arms / Arc Type 現代に生きる私たちは、当然のごとく大量生産された工業製品に 囲まれて生活しています。私の観察対象はそうした人工物が主で、そこには 人間の欲望と理性が共存し、私自身の内面と共通しているように思えます。 この12 本ネックのギターのシリーズはギタリストへの憧れと嫉妬という 矛盾をテーマに、ロックそのものが持つエネルギーを 彫刻に変換する試みに始まり、コンピュータのコピー＆ペーストの機能に 触発されて描かれたイメージを基に実空間に発展させています。 今回展示されているArc Typeはロックに見る西洋文化を表現した 屏風をイメージしています。屏風は日本的な絵画のアプローチであり、 見方を変えると彫刻的な構造を持っています。そういう意味では 私自身の中でも立体的な構造より空間を意識した作品と言えるでしょう。 難しい理屈よりも、実際にその眼で観て、このギターの音を 自由に想像していただけたら幸いです。 その一 #ONE 佐藤好彦 Photo: Hideto Nagatsuka Yoshihiko Satoh Born 1968, raised in Saitama Prefecture.
