Artist Biographies Guillermo Figueroa One of the most versatile and respected musical artists of his generation - renowned as conductor, violinist, violist and concertmaster - Guillermo Figueroa is the Principal Conductor of the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra. He is also the Music Director of the Music in the Mountains Festival in Colorado and Music Director of the Lynn Philharmonia in Florida. Additionally, he was the Music Director of both the New Mexico Symphony and the Puerto Rico Symphony. International appearances, among others, include the Toronto Symphony, Iceland Symphony, Orquesta Sinfonica de Chile

and the National Symphony of Mexico. In the US he has appeared with the orchestras of Detroit, New Jersey, Memphis, Phoenix, Tucson and the New York City Ballet. As violinist, his recording of Ernesto Cordero’s violin concertos for the Naxos label received a Latin Grammy nomination in 2012. Figueroa was Concertmaster of the New York City Ballet, and a Founding Member and Concertmaster of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, making over fifty recordings for Deutsche Grammophon. Also accomplished on the viola, Figueroa performs frequently as guest of the Fine Arts, Emerson, American, Amernet and Orion string quartets. Figueroa has given the world premieres of four violin concertos written for him: the Concertino by Mario Davidovsky, at Carnegie Hall with Orpheus; the Double Concerto by Harold Farberman, with the American Symphony at Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center; the Violin Concerto by Miguel del Aguila, commissioned by Figueroa and the NMSO and Insula, by Ernesto Cordero with the Solisti di Zagreb in Zagreb.

Jon Robertson Maestro Jon Robertson enjoys a distinguished career, both as a pianist, conductor and academician. He was awarded full scholarship six consecutive years to The Juilliard School of Music, earning a B.M., M.S., and D.M.A. degrees in piano performance as a student of Beveridge Webster. After completing a Masters Degree at The Juilliard, he was appointed Chair of the Department of Music at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama. In 1970, Robertson returned to The Juilliard as a Ford Foundation Scholar to complete his Doctorate

of Musical Arts. In 1972, Robertson became Chair of the Thayer Conservatory of Music at Atlantic Union College, in Massachusetts. Robertson traveled to Europe as a conducting fellow of Herbert Blomstedt, conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle. He became Conductor and Music Director of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra in Norway in 1979 and served until 1987. In 1982 Maestro Robertson became the Conductor and Music Director of the Redlands Symphony Orchestra. As guest conductor, Maestro Robertson has conducted orchestras nationally and internationally, among others, the San Francisco Symphony at Stern Grove and in Davies Hall, the Beijing Central Philharmonic in China, the Cairo Symphony Orchestra in Egypt and was the principal guest conductor of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra in Yerevan from 1995-98. Maestro Robertson has also

conducted the Bratislava Chamber Orchestra, at the Pianofest Austria at Bad Aussee, Austria, and most recently in South Africa, at the University of Stellenbosch International Festival. Recently, Robertson was honored as the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the National Society of Arts and Letters. Dr. Jon Robertson is presently Dean of the Lynn Conservatory of Music.

Hugo A. Valverde A native of Costa Rica; Hugo started his musical journey when he was seven years old at the local school of music located in his hometown, Barva, Heredia. A year later, after a long day of musical instrument trials, he decided to learn how to play the French Horn. His first teacher was Daniel León, from 2003 until 2007. In 2008 he got accepted at the National Music Institute of Costa Rica, joining the horn studio of the Principal Horn of the Costa Rican National Symphony Orchestra, Luis Murillo. Hugo had the opportunity to be part of several ensembles that helped him to develop a more intimate love for the music and most

importantly, the art form. Mr. Valverde has played with the Costa Rican National Symphony Orchestra as both assistant and second horn, and this helped him to gain more experience as an orchestral musician at his young age. In 2012, he auditioned for the Lynn University Conservatory of Music located in Boca Raton, FL, where he was accepted to begin his bachelor degree and musical studies with Gregory E. Miller. He successfully graduated in May 2016. In 2016, he auditioned and was also accepted to the Master of Music program at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, located in Houston, TX. His time at the Shepherd School of Music was very important in order to develop and shape certain aspects to become a successful orchestral musician nowadays. Hugo had the opportunity to study with the internationally acclaimed horn teacher and pedagogue, William VerMeulen. He attended the Chautauqua Music Festival in 2014, the Youth Orchestra of the Americas in 2015 and the Pacific Music Festival in 2016. While at the YOA Festival, Hugo had the privilege to study with Javier Gandara, who is a current member of the MET Orchestra horn section. Hugo A. Valverde won the audition for Second Horn at the MET Orchestra in May 2017, and started as an official member of the orchestra in August 2017. In his spare time, Hugo enjoys going on occasional bike rides and having coffee with friends.

Community Support The Friends of the Conservatory of Music is a volunteer organization formed to promote high quality performance education for exceptionally talented young musicians. For some students, meeting the costs associated with a world-class conservatory education can be highly challenging. This dedicated group provides financial support for many annual and endowed scholarships. December 18, 1998 Dr. Donald Ross Announces the Acquisition Of The Harid Conservatory Music Division Dr. Donald Ross announces the transfer of the Harid Music Division to Lynn University. Upon his retirement, while reflecting on his 35 years in office, Dr. Ross recalled the acquisition as one of his fondest memories. At the time, he said that even though costs were more than the university anticipated, and it seemed like a gamble, the decision was right. After 20 years, the Conservatory has flourished and is

now one of the premier music education programs in the United States. July 1, 1999 The Harid Conservatory of Music at Lynn University Officially Begins Operating With Lynn University’s commitment to maintaining the high standards characterized by the Harid program, several committees are formed to build an endowment for full-tuition scholarships and to expand the music program. The university utilizes the Harid building to continue teaching music classes and housing music students. Sixty-two (62) music students enjoy the new campus life and individual attention in the academic classroom.

1999-2000 First Dean of the Conservatory: Dr. Roberta Rust Dr. Roberta Rust is appointed as the first Dean of the Conservatory to oversee its transitional period. She takes an instrumental role in establishing the music curriculum at Lynn University. After one year of the appointment, Dr. Rust returns to her passion: teaching and performing the piano.

September 11, 1999 Lynn Music Preparatory School Starts Dr. Claudio Jaffé is appointed as the first Director of the Preparatory School of Music. The program initially offered performance lessons and courses in music theory, appreciation, and history for the

community and young musicians. Today, it focuses on performance instruction for young people and adults, and lessons are provided by the Conservatory faculty and students. Thousands of students have enrolled since the program began.

1999-2003 First Music Director: Arthur Weisberg Maestro Arthur Weisberg is appointed as the first Music Director and Conductor of the Lynn University Philharmonia. An accomplished composer, Weisberg annually organized the concert series, which

spotlighted the works of modern American composers. The series we named “Music of Our Time,” “North American Music Festival,” and “Born in the U.S.A.” October 2, 1999 First Philharmonia Concert Music Director Arthur Weisberg conducts the first Philharmonia concert, which features the talented music student, Sylvia Kim as the violin soloist. The program includes The Four Seasons by Vivaldi, Symphony No. 6 by Beethoven, William Tell Overture by Rossini, and Violin Concerto by Tchaikovsky. The concert is held at Olympic Heights High School in Boca Raton, FL.

December 10, 1999 Spanish River Church Selected as New Venue for Philharmonia Concerts The Conservatory selects Spanish River Church as the new venue for the Philharmonia concerts. The venue has a seating capacity of 1,500, accommodating larger audiences than Olympic Heights High School.

Liszt & His Circle Sunday, Oct. 20 - 4 p.m. Count and Countess de Hoernle International Center | Amarnick-Goldstein Concert Hall $20 Lynn University proudly joins with the South Florida chapter of the American Liszt Society in a special concert honoring Franz Liszt and his contemporaries. 2019 marks the 200th birth anniversary of Clara Schumann, so the concert will include some of her music as well as music by Alkan and Liszt. Performers include guest pianists from Florida International University, Jose Lopez and Kemal Gekić, and LYNN piano department head, Roberta Rust.
