On behalf of Numurkah Secondary College it gives me great pleasure to welcome our potential new families who may be joining us in the future.

Our College provides access to secondary education at the highest level for Numurkah and surrounding districts. The College is set in attractive grounds and boasts excellent facilities to deliver a comprehensive curriculum. Our outstanding resources provide our students with state of the art training opportunities, with a 1:1 computer program, equipment such as 3D Printers, CNC milling machines, laser cutters and comprehensive ICT connectivity across the college. Students are able to gain industry standard trade qualifications that are highly valued by employers utilising our state of the art technology wing. The resources on site are complemented by a comprehensive extra-curricular program which ensures students are exposed to a wide range of skills and experiences.

At Numurkah Secondary College we are small enough to care for and pay close attention to the individual, yet large enough to offer a diverse range of pathways, programs and facilities. Our curriculum and teaching strategies are aimed at providing students with a positive, confident attitude to learning, which will assist them in identifying choices available to achieve a pathway to their preferred future.

We have an extensive award winning ‘Student Wellbeing’ structure throughout the school and our staff apply a restorative approach on a daily basis. This involves maintaining a focus on building positive relationships and establishing a supportive environment that is fair and consistent. This enables us to effectively monitor and support students at all levels of the College in regard to their individual and collective welfare needs.

Outstanding Academic results: Numurkah Secondary College is concerned with the academic growth of all students. Our strong focus on

teaching the skills of learning through our “Learning to Learn” program has seen strong academic growth across the College, with region topping academic results in recent years.

Outstanding Preparation for Future Pathways: We are very proud of our College’s record for preparing and positioning our students well for their future. Past students have achieved academic and career success in an incredibly diverse range of pathways.

Last year, many of our VCE students received ‘early offers’ to University courses and are now enjoying life as a University student. We are delighted that we have had an increase in the number of Year 12 students choosing to go on to University over the past three years.

Above state average VCE results in Food Technology, Physical Education, Studio Art and Psychology. Others have chosen to move into further education and training through TAFE and Apprenticeship

opportunities. A number of students are often in the enviable position of having employers hold apprenticeship positions open for them while they completed their VCE or VCAL Certificates, as was the case for one of our recent College Captains.

Students in Years 7-8 at Numurkah Secondary College undertake an engaging course of study that reflects the principles outlined in the Victorian Curriculum. The program is designed to facilitate the transition from primary school to secondary school and to encourage the development of independent and engaged learners. Junior School Program focuses on:

Working in a range of classrooms and contexts to develop a broad range of abilities across the curriculum

Developing skills in literacy and numeracy that can be applied across the curriculum and in later secondary schooling

Building students social and personal skills with a focus on teamwork, resilience, reflection, communication and leadership

Linking students learning with real world experiences and opportunities. The curriculum structure of year 7 and 8 consists of a core program that is designed to provide students with a broad range of subjects across the two years. Students undertake a course of study that involves English, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Health & Physical Education, Art, Music, Visual Communication, Drama and Technology (Food, Wood, Textiles and Metal) and Language. The aim of the Junior School Program is to provide students with a taste of what Numurkah Secondary College has to offer, so that in future years of study they are equipped to make choices about their pathways.

Year 9 - ‘Numurkah 9’ Program

During the first half of Year 9 students study subjects based on a core/elective system. The core subjects covered are English, Maths, Science, Humanities and Physical Education and Health. There is a choice of two electives for semester one from the following areas: Art, Food - Bakery, Music, Textiles, Visual Communication and Wood.

In semester two, students move in to our alternative program called ‘Numurkah 9’ in which the number of compulsory core subjects reduces to three - English, Maths and Science. Students also have an opportunity to choose one elective from Art, Food and Physical Education. For the remaining 14 sessions of the week students are involved in a learning program which encompasses; authentic project based learning, vocational learning opportunities, and careers and pathways planning.

Within the Year 9 Program we aim to:

provide a wide range of experiences for each student, motivate and encourage students to pursue and develop their skills and

interests, provide a curriculum that meets the needs of all students of this very age specific

adolescent group, & provide for the varying levels of personal development for the individual student

Provide opportunities for work experience/community work

Develop personal and social capabilities

Provide an opportunity to attend an two week outdoor education camp.

Above state average VCE results in Food Technology, Physical Education, Studio Art and Year 10 students at Numurkah Secondary College study subjects based on a core/elective system. Year 10 - Careers Program All Students in Year 10 complete a Careers Program run by the College Careers Counsellor and are encouraged to take advantage of the Work Experience Program on offer. Work experience placement possibilities include:

Several block placements for 2 or more weeks

Placement in the work force for 1 day per week for a term

Placement in the work force for 2 days per week for a term

Regular afternoon work placement

Fast Tracking Opportunities Students who have identified a pathway to their desired future by the end of Year 9, or have an obvious passion or strength in a particular subject are provided the opportunity to 'Fast Track' for an early entry into either a VCE or Vocational Education pathway whilst in Year 10.

Vocational Education is a direct effort to address the needs of students who are more focused on their future in the work force rather than going on to university studies. This helps to highlight to students the importance of the links between their studies at school and the workplace.

In choosing a Year 10 program we work with families to ensure that planning is not only for Year 10, but for Years 11, 12 and beyond.

Numurkah Secondary College is committed to providing extensive programs for all students continuing their post compulsory education.

Course counselling for all students takes place in Term 3, involving Senior School teachers and our Career Advisor, Parents and Students. Students can obtain advice regarding pathway planning to a particular career at any time and this is encouraged throughout their senior years of schooling. Students are encouraged to make full use of the Careers Centre and to explore all options, discussing any issues that arise with their Home Group Teacher or our Careers Counsellor.

In selecting subjects for Years 11 and 12, full consideration is given to the individual student’s intended pathway beyond secondary college; this may include University, TAFE, apprenticeships/traineeships or employment. We aim for all students who leave Numurkah Secondary College to do so only after completing either one of the two senior certificate options:

The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

Our College's senior school curriculum allows students to design an individual program through a comprehensive range of Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) & Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) studies providing real pathways to post secondary opportunities as outlined in the Senior Handbook.

We provide access to Certificate I, II or III credentials through a number of Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses offered in partnership with Goulburn Ovens TAFE. Many of our students also undertake a School Based Apprenticeship. Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses and School Based Apprenticeships count as units towards both the VCE and the VCAL certificates. Year 12 students are provided with a great deal of support in making choices for post-secondary options, particularly with Tertiary applications (University and TAFE) through the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) system.

Literacy Support Program

We also recognise that some students require extra assistance in the

development of their literacy skills. As such, we offer intervention

programs that are intended to build literacy capacity in a smaller group

setting. Here, students are provided tasks specifically designed to develop

their basic literacy skills and these are then developed further while back

in the classroom.

Reading Program

Reading is hugely beneficial for student development, with advantages shown across all facets of their education.

The ASPIRE Reading Program enables students to read a variety of texts - both fiction and non-fiction – for 18

minutes per day. This reading time, in conjunction with subject-based reading and reading at home, markedly

improves students’ comprehension skills. ASPIRE is a great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the

endless possibilities of knowledge and enjoyment that literature provides.

All students have the opportunity to succeed in numeracy at Numurkah Secondary College. Teachers work collaboratively in year level teams to ensure that the curriculum delivered meets the needs of every individual student. Our aim is for all who attend the College to be numerate and able to perform tasks that require numeracy understanding; not only in the classroom but also in the broader community.

Students who fall below the expected standards in Number are assessed using the Number Fluency Assessment. Following completion of the assessment, students are given individualised fluency tasks that aim to improve understanding in areas where students have difficulty. Students are provided with a new task once they become fluent and can demonstrate their understanding. Students are reassessed at regular intervals to enable teachers to provide tasks that are specifically designed to meet the student’s needs. Further to this, selected students are given small group intervention once a week. In these groups students are monitored closely and tasks are adjusted as required. Students who do not require this intense intervention are still provided the opportunity to learn and develop new strategies to assist with their mental arithmetic through the use of fluency activities. These students also focus on developing their problem solving skills.

Selected students who are working above the expected levels at Year 8, 9 and 10 are also invited to participate in an academic class that is designed to extend their achievements in numeracy.

All students have the opportunity to succeed in numeracy at Numurkah Secondary College. Teachers work collaboratively in year level teams to ensure that the curriculum delivered meets the needs of every individual student. All students at year 7 & 8 utilise ‘Maths Pathway’ for learning the Maths curriculum. This program systematically completes a thorough diagnosis of what a student does and doesn’t know in terms of mathematical skills. Every student’s work is fully differentiated, meaning that students are working at their own point of need rather than working on a specific level of Maths curriculum because of the year level they are in. The traditional classroom setting runs the risk of repeating previously learnt knowledge for some students and being inaccessible for others. Maths Pathway allows for student learning to be individually paced, at the level the student needs.

Our aim is for all who attend the College to be numerate and able to perform tasks that require numeracy understanding; not only in the classroom but also in the broader community.

QuickSmart Program

Numurkah Secondary College has heavily invested in the numeracy intervention program QuickSmart.

QuickSmart is a program run in conjunction with the University of New England with the aim to develop fluent (Quick) and efficient (Smart) strategy use.

The program aims to improve the numeracy of students who are not achieving their academic potential. Participating students may have varying levels of learning difficulties because of knowledge gaps, lack of practice, anxiety and low confidence.

Students develop fundamental numeracy skills with accuracy and speed. Students who are in the program show not only improvement in maths but self-confidence as a learner.

Numurkah Secondary College has a strong student leadership program which encourages students to be involved from Year 7 through to Year 12.

School Captains There are two School Captains and three Vice Captains. School Captains are required to demonstrate a commitment to the school and its values. They play a very important role within the leadership structure and represent the school and students at all assemblies and many external functions. A major responsibility of the captains is working with community members to plan and conduct the local ANZAC Day Ceremony, for which they are the Masters of Ceremony.

School Leaders School Leaders are selected from members of the senior school. Ten students go through an interview process and are selected to this position. Amongst the important roles of the School Leaders are; taking responsibility for a year level and assisting the Year Level Coordinator in managing the cohort, setting up for school assemblies and representing the College at official functions.

House Captains There are four Senior and four Junior House Captains for each of the Houses within the College House System. House Captains are responsible for organising their houses during House Events such as the swimming and the athletics carnivals.

Student Leadership Council The Student Leadership Council (SLC) is a student leadership body that provides leadership opportunities for students of all year levels. Led by the senior student’s leadership group, the SLC take responsibility for key areas of the school program, such as extra-curricular activities, school events and communications, anti-bullying and School Wide Positive Behaviour.

Peer Leaders Peer Leaders are selected from the Middle School and are trained to develop the skills required to assist other students with a range of issues. They are an important point of contact for other students and work closely with the Student Welfare Coordinator.

Year 9 Leadership School Year 9 students have an opportunity to apply for the School for Student Leadership. We have been successful in gaining placement for five NSC Year 9 teams over the past four years. This is an amazing State Education initiative, providing a unique living away from home experience and personal development journey. In 2018 our Year 9 Leaders participated in a cultural emersion program in China, along with other leaders from around the state.

Moira Shire Youth Council Each year six students represent our college on the Moira Shire Youth Council. These students spend two years on the council engaged in leadership development activities and decision making processes.

SCHOOL CAMP PROGRAM

YEAR 7 CAMP—Billabong Ranch, Echuca As new students to the school, this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know other students and staff, hence it is held in Term 1. We like to encourage all Year 7 students to attend this camp, so they can take advantage of the many educational and team building benefits.

YEAR 8 CAMP—Camp Wilkin, Anglesea This is an Outdoor Education camp where the students will be involved in a range of recreational activities and will also observe a coastal environment. Some of the outdoor activities undertaken will include surf carnival, surfing, swimming and high ropes, initiative courses and many other activities based at Camp Wilkins. The College enlists the services of ‘Go Ride a Wave’ company from Anglesea, who provide Lifeguards for swimming activities and teach surfing in groups of approxi-mately 18 students. This year we will also be attending the Water Adventure Park in Geelong for a day. Department of Education Safety Requirements will be met at all times.

YEAR 9 & 10 CAMP—Central Australia This camp takes place every second year. In the past, students taking part in this excursion have benefitted greatly from the chance to experience different climate, land use lifestyle and terrain. The itinerary has included stopovers in Adelaide, Coober Pedy, Alice Springs, Uluru, The Olgas and Marla. The cost is inclusive of all accommodation and most meals. Some students have also taken the opportunity to purchase joy flights in helicopters whilst on the trip and to purchase souvenirs at various locations. Provision for this extra expenditure must be considered when making a decision on whether or not to take part. Those staff and students who have taken the trip in the past have unanimously praised the educational and social advantages gained from the trip.

YEAR 11 & 12 CAMP—Melbourne This camp provides opportunities for students to visit a variety of facilities and educational resources in a city location and is an important transition initiative from dependant student, to the world beyond school. It will be relevant to both VCE and VCAL students. The camp encompasses:

Campus Tour of the University of Melbourne.

Independent travel around the city in small groups.

University and or TAFE visit and information sessions.

SPORT

Numurkah Secondary College has an established sporting program steeped in tradition. We have a competitive House system consisting of four Houses; Christie, Gray, Hunkin and Tweddle. These Houses are named in honour of past Numurkah students who gave their lives for the good of our country during the Second World War: John Christie, John Gray, Gregory Hunkin and Charles Tweddle. Inter-House sporting events take place throughout the year and students in the Houses are supported by a student leadership group in the form of House Captains. Major House swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals are held each year, where all interested students have the opportunity to compete. Winners from the House carnivals advance to the inter-school Goulburn Murray Division competition. Numurkah Secondary College is a member of the Goulburn Murray Division of School Sport Victoria (GMDSSV), where we compete regularly with other secondary schools. The sports program at Numurkah Secondary College, offers all students the opportunity to participate in a wide range of inter-school sporting competitions such as badminton, baseball, basketball, clay target shooting, cricket, European handball, football, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball, softball, squash, soccer, table tennis, ten pin bowling, tennis and volleyball. Students participate in divisional, regional and state level sports, as well as in the local house sport competitions. Our students have enjoyed outstanding individual and team successes, which is very pleasing, but although success in competitive sport is important to us, our fundamental objective is to promote within students an interest and enjoyment of healthy living and practices that support a healthy lifestyle.

BREAKFAST PROGRAM

We know that students learn better if they have had a nutritional breakfast to start off the day. To ensure all students have access to this every day, the college provides a light breakfast for any student who presents themselves. The program is supervised by the school nurse and a range of teaching and support staff. Students are provided with a range of breakfast items which they prepare for themselves upon arrival. The breakfast program provides both a nutritional start to the day and a chance for socialisation with students and staff. A great way to start the day!

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM

Numurkah Secondary College employs two specialised instrumental part-time music teachers who offer their services to students on a wide variety of instruments. Tuition is sustained on a weekly timetable which is developed to ensure that students do not miss out on the same class every week. Instruments currently on offer (but are not limited to) include:

Numurkah Secondary College places a strong emphasis on the overall wellbeing of our students and has a dedicated non teaching Student Welfare Coordinator role. The Welfare Coordinator works closely with our Student Engagement team in supporting students and family with issues that arise during the adolescent years. Additionally, the Student Welfare Coordinator works with other welfare professionals and community agencies to address student needs.

As a school, our focus is on primary prevention and early intervention as the most effective means of enhancing the resilience of young people. Strength-based programs are facilitated for both male and female students so that they may develop skills and strategies to best manage the various challenges in life. We work closely with local health care providers, law enforcement, and alter-native learning settings in order to best address individual identified needs. Here at Numurkah Secondary College we strive to empower young people to attend to issues in a clear and responsible way through informed decision making.

We have implemented a whole school Restorative Practices Approach at NSC. Restorative Practices involve the building of positive relationships and establishing a supportive environment that is fair, consistent and democratic.

Therefore when an incident occurs we:

DrumBeat Numurkah Secondary College runs a program called DrumBeat every morning for a wide range of students. Using 15 recently purchased Djembes, the sessions run for approximately 10 minutes at the beginning of each school day. Participation is on a voluntary basis, along with some encouragement from our Student Wellbeing Officer or our Year Level Leaders who feel particular students would benefit from the program.

DrumBeat is a music-based activity, engaging students in a physical activity and focusing on concentration and team-work before formal classes begin. It allows those students who may be feeling upset or angry from an incident the night before or in the morning a chance to release tension before going to class. It assists students in being able to concentrate on one particular activity at a time, and this quite often sets up how their day is going to look for them.

Students who have been participating in DrumBeat say that their focus towards their schoolwork has improved, and they are liking the routine that comes from an orderly start to their day.

We are pleased to have deemed this program a great success, with students having a more positive outlook on their education and less behaviour/ social issues in and out of the classroom. These students have also been offered leadership opportunities by being able to ‘lead’ the group for sessions, being in charge of changing the rhythms and tempos the group plays. Their confidence levels in themselves, as well as how they deal with situations has become far more positive.

Respectful Relationships Victoria’s Respectful Relationships initiative supports school leaders, educators and our school communities to promote and model respect and equality – and to teach our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience and confidence. We are a Respectful Relationships partner school, and is it our ongoing aim to ensure that we promote each of these qualities within our school and local community. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and gender equality are lived across the school community, and when classroom learning is reinforced by what is modelled in our school community. Taking a whole-school approach is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire school community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on students’ academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students. Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential. At Numurkah Secondary College, we engage in staff training to develop teacher capacity in delivering and promoting Respectful Relationships across our internal and external curriculum. We challenge inappropriate language and behaviour and enable students to feel respected, safe and heard. We support our students & staff as necessary, and provide opportunities to all students, regardless of gender. We also educate our students about the issue of family violence, as well as discrimination and gender equity. Respectful Relationships is modelled by staff through our language, use of resources and signage, and by enforcing our Respect Loop. Free school bus services are set up under a set of guidelines to ensure that a fair and equitable service is available. It is the policy of the Department of Education and Training (DET) that a parent may choose to send their children to a school of their choice. Free bus travel is provided only to the nearest appropriate school. Furthermore, free bus travel is provided only when a student resides 4.8 kilometres or more from the school (front gate to front gate).

How do I know if my children are eligible?

Under normal circumstances government school students in years Prep to 10 will be eligible for bus transport only to their nearest school. For students in years 11 and 12 access to comprehensive curriculum may be considered to determine the nearest appropriate school. The Numurkah Secondary College, as Bus Coordinating School, is responsible for coordinating all applications for permission to travel on a school bus service, including students attending both state and registered schools. It is recognised there will be circumstances that warrant special consideration where a student does not meet the rules for eligibility to travel. In such cases the parent must seek the approval of the Regional Director, to travel on the school bus service. If the approval is given such students would be treated as ‘eligible’ in future decisions about that bus service.

What if my children are not eligible for free bus travel? The current policy is that spare capacity on a school bus can be used for fare paying passengers. Permission to travel is subject to stringent conditions including the requirement of parents to make alternative arrangements if at any stage there is insufficient capacity on the relevant bus. Thus, arrangements for fare payers can only be made on a term-to-term basis. Final approval to travel is only granted when the appropriate documentation is completed and fares for the next term have been paid. Fares are determined by the Department of Infrastructure and start from $110 to $290 per term, depending on the distance travelled. When all students are dressed in uniform, discrimination from peers, based on the particular brand, price or style of clothing a person might wear, is eliminated. All students at Numurkah Secondary College are expected to dress in full school uniform. We ask parents to support us in this matter by ensuring that your child is dressed in school uniform, including the correct footwear, at all times. On the rare occasion when this is not possible, students are expected to bring a signed note from home.
