The Exam School Admissions Process

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) has three exam schools – Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, and the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science. Eligible students must currently be in grade 6 to apply for grade 7, or grade 8 to apply for grade 9 at all three exam schools. Only the John D. O’Bryant School accepts applications from students currently in grade 9. Boston’s exam schools accept and support all types of learners.

Students who are interested in attending an exam school must complete an application process that includes taking the entrance exam, submission of grades, and ranking the schools in order of preference. Parents of students not currently enrolled in the BPS are also required to confirm Boston residency at a BPS Welcome Center.

There are a limited number of seats available in the exam schools. Students are chosen to attend based on their ISEE score (50%) and Grade Point Average (GPA) (50%). Please ensure the steps below are completed before the deadline to ensure the application will be considered. Each step is outlined in the next sections of this guide.

Step 1: Register for the ISEE

Step 2: Submit a request for testing accommodations (for students with disabilities or limited English proficiency)

Step 3: Confirm Boston Residency (for students not currently enrolled in the BPS)

Step 4: Take the ISEE

Step 5: Submit school choice ranking form and receive applicant grades

Step 6: Receive notification of admissions decision

Step 2: Request Testing Accommodations for Students with Disabilities and English Language LearnersEligibility: Test accommodations are any modifications made to the exam or testing conditions that allow students with disabilities or limited English proficiency to fully participate in a testing situation.

To request test accommodations based on a disability, the student must have an Individual Education Plan (IEP), 504 Plan, neuropsychological evaluation, or physician’s letter documenting a medical/health concern that will impact testing.

To request the English Learner (EL) test accommodation based on limited English proficiency, students not currently enrolled in the BPS are required to take an English Proficiency Test provided by the BPS Newcomer Assessment Office to determine eligibility. Current Boston Public Schools students must have an English Language Development (ELD) level 1-5 to be eligible. The EL accommodation includes extended time and/or the use of a word-to-word bilingual dictionary.

Deadline: Test accommodation requests for the Saturday, November 9th exam must be submitted by September 27, 2019 according to the process listed below. Accommodations for the in-school exam on November 7, 2019 (grade 6 BPS students only) will be coordinated by the child’s current school.

The Make-up Test: The make-up test date is for students who were unable to attend the first scheduled test administration due to serious illness, injury, family crisis, or for those families who missed the registration period in September. Walk-in registration will be available at the November 23, 2019 test administration at Boston Latin Academy, located at 205 Townsend Street, Boston, MA 0212. Students will be able to walk into the test center with the required documents and register on site. Please review page 14 for a checklist of what to bring on test day.

Test accommodations are also available at the make-up test administration. Please follow the instructions listed on pages 7–10 and submit the accommodations request by November 8, 2019 for the November 23rd make-up test.

PLEASE NOTE: Students who take the exam on November 7th or 9th may not take the make-up test, regardless of the circumstances that might have affected his/her performance. The Boston Public Schools will not retest a student under any circumstances after November 23, 2019.

Getting ISEE Results:Test scores will be reported automatically to Boston Public Schools/Exam School Admissions. Families will also receive an Individual Score Report for their child at the home address in late December. Parents also have the option of sending test scores to additional schools for a fee of $125 fee. Please refer to the last page of this booklet for the request form.

Step 5: Rank Exam School Choices & Submit GradesIn early January BPS will distribute school choice forms to families to collect ranked preferences of the three exam school choices, as well as any district school options. Parents are able to apply to one, two, or all three exam schools for grade 7 and 9 admission. Students currently in grade 9 may only apply for grade 10 admission at the John D. O’Bryant School. The form must be returned by Friday, February 7, 2020.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is based entirely on the grades submitted by your child’s school. If your child attended a different school last year, please make sure the current school has a copy of the official transcript from the previous year. The grade information will be collected directly from the applicant’s current school and should reflect the marks from the child’s report card in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math courses.

Page 16: 2019-2020 Boston Public Schools Exam School Application Guide · The Saturday test administration will be offered at seven locations across Boston (current Boston residents only).

16

The Exam School Admissions Process

Grade changes will not be accepted after exam school invitations are released in March. It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure the school completes the process and submits the information on time.

Step 6: Notification of Admission Results Admission decisions are sent to families in mid-March to both the mailing address and parent email address on file. The decision letter will include the students ISEE scores, GPA, candidate rank, and admission status.

Admission decisions are final, and the exam schools do not have waitlists. BPS does not offer an appeal process since admission is strictly based on student academic performance.

Criteria for admission: The admission score is determined by equally weighting the student’s ISEE score (50%) and Grade Point Average (GPA) (50%).

• Each subtest within the ISEE is equally weighted.• The student’s GPA is based on marks in English and Language

Arts (ELA) and Math from the previous school year (grade 5 or 7) and the marking periods of the current school year beginning September 2019 through January 2020.

• For students with grade 5 academic records from the Boston Public Schools, only the spring term marks in Reading, Writing, and Math will be used to calculate the GPA.

• For students applying to grade 10 at the John O’Bryant School, only the ninth grade English and math grades will be considered.
