General Business • BOM endorses selectors recommending 9 teams be entered in Metro Pennant (4 for

Midweek and 5 for Saturday) to be confirmed by 30th June (closing date) • Club Uniform: Rob Waghorn spoke to the meeting and outlined the time frame for

displaying the new shirt and explained the necessary steps that members will need to carry out to ensure they receive their shirt.

• Members wishing to use an “arm” to bowl with, no longer need a doctor’s certificate to obtain one. The only stipulation in the use is that the arm must be used for the full duration of any game.

• Robin Shaw offered to run another clinic on the use of mechanical arms. With Michael Rose and Doug Corrigan assisting, clinics could be organised for Club members only as well as extending the invitations to other clubs.

• Robin Shaw has suggested that when our relocation takes effect, the Board should look into a covered green to enable the space to be utilised fully by the Club and the local Community. President Ray has had discussions with the council and as yet has not received a date for the transition. It is hoped that we hear from the Council in the near future but has assured the members all will be done to ensure a top class venue will result. The Council were waiting for post election fund allocation and with 30 other interest groups in the mix, it seems that the move will not be for some years yet. A scheduled meeting in August will hopefully give a set time frame.

8 Close Closing address by President Ray Ray spoke of the commitment John Dixon has shown over the past year, organising functions, bookings and rosters for Ariette’s nights and with his appointment to the Bowls Vic Steering Committee, will not have the time to spend at the Club. Members are asked to volunteer where they can so that all events run smoothly. EISM school championships begin at Croydon Bowls tomorrow and parking may be at a premium for members. Meeting closed at 7.40 pm

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2019-2020 As I sit down to write my 2019/20 report a State of emergency continues in Victoria with stage 3 restrictions in place due to the coronavirus pandemic. The serious nature of the pandemic brought an abrupt end to our bowling season and continues to cause the complete shutdown of all our Club activities. Let’s hope in the coming months as restrictions are eased, we may be able to return to the bowling green in some capacity. Fortunately, the home and away pennant season was completed with 3 of our Weekend sides and 2 Midweek sides making finals which again depicts our strength on the green. Much of the finals were played in difficulties under coronavirus restrictions and with some finals unable to be completed. Nevertheless, our Midweek Division 1 side won it’s section and our Weekend Division 3 side achieved promotion to Division 2 next year. Congratulations to all members of those side on a very successful season. On another positive note we commenced the season with all our members decked out in new bowls shirts. This refresh to our uniform was generally well received and our thanks goes to Rob Waghorn for his initiative in working with our uniform supplier to develop the new design. I must also acknowledge the sponsorship provided by the Bendigo Bank that made this all possible. One of the major projects undertaken during the year was the resurfacing of the grass green. Members will remember that a decision was made at a General Meeting in August to resurface the green. The Board then acted upon this direction from our membership to engage Agturf Pty Ltd to undertake that project. Under the direction of Doug Agnew work commenced on the project in November and the new tiftdwarf grass sown in late December. By late January there was full coverage of grass on the green. Our contractor Doug Agnew is extremely confident that we will have a good playing surface for next season. The management and oversight of the works associated with the resurfacing of the grass green fell to our sub committee comprising Graeme Orr, Rob Waghorn and Eddie Scott. I am most grateful for their efforts and responsibility in supervising this important project on behalf of the Club. I extend my thanks and appreciation to Russell Green for his work as our Greenkeeper over the past 6 years. Russell submitted his resignation in late March, and I wish him well with his future endeavours. Russell’s unexpected resignation meant that the Club was without a greenkeeper at a time when the contractor was about to hand the new green back to the Club for management. The Board moved quickly to rectify that situation and appoint Doug Agnew as our greenkeeper for the next two years. I acknowledge the efforts of our Greens Director, Eddie Scott and his team of volunteers for preparing the synthetic green for pennant and other club events. Also, my thanks to Dad’s

Page 9: 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT - Croydon Bowls

Army our wonderful group of volunteers for their work in looking after the gardens and surrounds. One matter that provides uncertainty for the Club is the Maroondah Council’s Croydon Community Precinct Project. Initially we were informed that the Club would be one of the first initiatives to be addressed in this project. That now appears to have changed with the Council now concentrating its efforts on community hub number one, to be built in the area currently occupied by the community hall. With this hub in the very early planning stages it will be some time, possibly years, before completion. The other stages of the Precinct Project are still to be funded and with the current economic situation due to the coronavirus, funds for this type of project are likely to be scarce. It is my view that it will be quite some time before the Club will be relocated to the proposed new site near Keystone Hall. Outdoor furniture was purchased for the new decking, which has proved popular with members. It is pleasing to see members sitting out on the decking particularly after pennant matches on Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. Renovations have occurred inside the Clubhouse curtesy of the Maroondah Council. The floor coverings in the ladies lounge has been replaced and a new storage room created in that area. This has improved the ascetics of that area and provided a vital area to store our excess chairs and other furniture. The Council also created an outside serving area from the bar onto the decking by replacing the bar window. This is another desirable improvement and we appreciate the Council’s assistance in carrying out these important works. One of the less pleasing things to report is a break-in and theft of money from our Clubhouse in December. Thieves forced their way into the Clubhouse and managed to get away with some of our cash before the security company monitoring the building could respond. Unfortunately, the perpetrators have not been identified and several other sporting clubs in the area have also lost money through break-ins. The Board has since reviewed and upgraded security measures at the Club. A major highlight of our season had to be our fundraising night for bushfire victims. With devastating bushfires affecting much of the country areas in the State during the summer, some of our members decided that it would be a nice idea to raise some funds for those affected by the fires. What started out as a small-scale idea from Club members Matthew Creighton, Barry Ward and Anthony Witkowski turned out to be a major event. It was determined to assist two small communities – Cudgewa in Northern Victoria and Scarsdale in Gippsland East – by raising funds to assist their rural fire brigades. Our fundraising night was held on Saturday 15 February and what a night it turned out to be. Items were auctioned and raffled, heads were shaved and the large crowed that turned up were very generous resulting in over $17,000 being raised. Congratulations to all concerned for a fabulous effort. Another consequence of the coronavirus shutdown was the cancellation of our annual Calcutta Pairs tournament which is sponsored by Chemist Warehouse. Many of our current and former members had already paid their entry fees to participate in this popular event.

Page 10: 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT - Croydon Bowls

2

John Dixon our tournament director had prepared the draw and had most of the other arrangements for the tournament in place before the decision to cancel the event was made. This was disappointing but unfortunately the only thing we could do in the current circumstances. I express my appreciation to John for all his efforts in arranging this event and it is extremely disappointing that it could not proceed. We value our enduring relationship with Ariette’s Concert Lounge and welcome the additional revenue stream that this partnership continues to provide. A new cater Kaitris Catering joined the Concert Lounge in January offering a wider range of meals and services for customers. We look forward to continuing our relationship with Dave and his team and Kaitris Catering when the Concert Lounge activities can resume after the coronavirus lockdown. I also wish to thank all our members who have been part of the bar roster on Friday night’s to support the Concert Lounge and safeguard our valuable revenue stream. My thanks and appreciation to all my fellow Board members for their great work during the year. In particular, I acknowledge the work of our office bearers - Treasurer, Norm Brownlaw, Secretary, Pam Arnot and Vice President John Dixon without who’s tireless efforts the Club would not exist. Also, I thank Gary McCluskey for his advice and work as the Club’s auditor. Finally, I wish to thank our Club coaches and umpires for their efforts throughout the bowling season. Ray Purdey President

Bowls Secretary Report 2019 - 2020 Many thanks go to the continuing work of our volunteers for social bowls, namely Peter Arnot, Val Lippingwell, Dianne Nixon, Erny and Phil Parker and Janice Rich. Social bowls have been held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Social bowls on Wednesday has been poor as many members wished to play pennant on Tuesdays. There was only one match the day after Melbourne Cup Day with 6 bowlers. From May through to the end of August, the format of nominated pairs was introduced on Saturday and generated a great deal of interest, sponsored by Eastwood Electrical. Single entries were accepted as well. As we only had the use of the synthetic green and if we had a surplus of entries, it has been looked after by Stan Bullas, Peter Arnot, Joe Di Cecco, Ron Dalton and Roger Doe to try and give all players a game, even if it was half a game. Stan and his willing volunteers are doing a great job in running this event. Opening Day was well attended by members at the end of August after our Opening Night Dinner Dance. Members of Dad's army are to be thanked for their hard work each Monday morning to keep our club grounds in the condition as you see it. Thanks also go to our Greens Director and helpers, Coaches, Umpires and Bar Staff who tirelessly help. Without all these volunteers our Club would not be running as it is. A job well done by everyone involved – many thanks. Dawn McIntyre, Bowls Secretary.

Saturday Selection Report - 2019/2020

Firstly, I would like to extend my thanks to fellow selectors Norm Brownlaw, Joe Di Cecco,

Graeme Orr & Barry Ward for their input throughout the season.

This season due to an influx of Members wishing to play pennant the Club elected to enter a

6 -A- Side team to accommodate all our Members, unfortunately we had the usual drop with

numbers & on many occasions were unable to fill this side, consequently having to forfeit to

the opposition. In spite of what eventuated the selectors aim was to give as many of our

members a competitive game and this was achieved in over 50% of scheduled matches.

Unfortunately, the Club were inflicted with a fine from BV for those games forfeited.

I thank all our members who committed to making themselves available throughout the

season and to those who filled in as numbers depleted. On many occasions Joe Di Cecco

with his persuasive skills was tasked with filling teams due to late withdrawals.

The selectors are proud of the achievements of the results obtained by all those

Pennant sides for season 2019-2020 and all members should be pleased with the results

with the aim to improve next season.

Saturday Pennant – 6 sides

Division 1 – another hugely successful season, unfortunately going down by 2 shots overall in the sectional final being a great disappointment.

Division 2 – a great effort to finish 1st at completion of season only to fall short in first sectional knockout game.

Division 3 – after a tough year in 2018/2019 a great effort to not only finish top of the section 2019/2020 but also gaining promotion to Division 2.by winning 1st final. Congratulations to all players who should be proud of their performances. Promotion to Division 2.

Division 4 – after being promoted this year, it was always going to be tough but to their credit a solid year finishing 7th.

Division 6 – Performed admirably all season, finished less than a game from playing finals. Well done to all & hopefully with the experience gained will continue to improve.

6A Side – As previously stated, unfortunately not able to fill side regularly. The aim was to give our newer bowlers some experience & the pleasure of participation.

Page 13: 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT - Croydon Bowls

Members should stand tall & feel proud of the performances achieved individually &

ultimately by all teams representing the Croydon Bowling Club.

The results are indicative of another terrific season with promotion for Division 3 to Division 2

for the 2020/21 season, plus the experience of finals participation for many of our Members.

Congratulations to all Members who participated & represented the Croydon Bowling Club.

Tuesday Selection Report

Season 2019-2020 was a very good one bowling wise but a very sad one in another way with the passing away of two of our loyal members in Mal O’Donohue and Jenny Treverton early in the season.

I would like to thank all players for their patience when sides where picked. I know that some players weren’t happy when not selected but that was the way it had to be. Three teams ended up plying in finals and one team being relegated.

Our number 1 side did very well finishing top of the ladder. We played Hurstbridge in the first final which we won after each rink had to play an extra end. In the sectional final we played Heathmont and after being down early, we came back to win in a close finish.

Our number 2 side had a hard draw with seven opposition clubs fielding their number 1 sides. Due to some close games not going their way, they have ended up being relegated.

Number 3 side had a very good season, finishing on top and playing in finals, but going down in the first match.

The number 4 side also had a very good season, finishing third but going down in the first final.

I would like to thank my selection committee of John Smith, Robyn Weinbergs, Peter Arnot and for a part of the season Marianne Sudborough.

A special mention to Jenny Treverton who was a selector before passing away. I would like to thank all players and selectors again for the past season and hope to see you all again next season.

Frank Limb ( Chairman )
