Congratulations, Falcons! Saint Stephen's Athletics was one of the most recognized high school athletic programs in Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties last year by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's Best of HT Preps. The Herald-Tribune named 40 Falcon student-athletes to various all-area teams, including 19 first-team selections representing 14 different sports! However, if you think that was amazing, just wait . . .

The 2019-20 campaign is filled with excitement in anticipation of the Florida High School Athletic Association's new State Series format. In previous years, teams competed in their district and the champion and runner-up moved on to regional competition. Beginning this year, teams are still assigned to districts, but they are not required to play each other until the district tournament. Seeding for the district tournament will be based solely on MaxPreps.com rankings, which are derived from the team’s win/loss record and strength of schedule. However, only the district champions will automatically earn a spot in regional play. There will be four at-large bids to each regional tournament, and those bids will also be based on MaxPreps.com rankings of the remaining schools within the region.

So what does this mean for our Falcons? Some of our teams may be required to travel a little more in order to find appropriate competition to raise their ranking, while other teams will host more games. Either way, we will experience competition against new opponents, or opponents we haven't seen in a long time. With that said, I fully expect our Falcons to perform well and reach the postseason. Getting there will simply be that much sweeter under the new system.

I want to thank and congratulate coaches Guy Virgilio (girls soccer), Stephen Adair (boys soccer) and Jaime Kitchner (cheer) who joined us last year as new varsity coaches. They each had very exciting and successful seasons, and I can’t wait to see what they have planned for an encore. Please help me give a big Falcon welcome to the following new varsity head coaches for 2019-20:

Dan Krone is our new Associate Athletic Director. Coach Krone has extensive Associate AD experience, having served in that capacity at the University of South Florida (2012-19), the University of Cincinnati (2007-11), and the University of Akron (2003-07). He has a master’s degree in Physical Education / Recreational Sports Management from Eastern Michigan and a bachelor’s in the same from Bethany College. He’s already a familiar SSES face as the husband of long time Intermediate School teacher Ann Hunsader!

Juan Garcia is our new Head Volleyball Coach. Coach Garcia comes to us from Columbus, Ohio where he served as a high school athletic director and volleyball coach. He has extensive volleyball coaching experience at all levels

of interscholastic and club play. Juan is married to Mildred Maymi, who is joining our faculty as a Spanish teacher in the Lower and Intermediate schools.

David Gaulman is our new Head Girls Basketball Coach. Coach G. works at IMG Academy as a Life Coach for the basketball program and coaches the Sarasota Spark, a club girls basketball team that just won the State AAU title for their age group. He has extensive coaching and playing experience. David was a standout at Booker High School before playing collegiately at Southeastern University. He was also a member of the USA Select Basketball team that traveled throughout Europe for games in 2011.

Judy Carlson is our new Head JV & Varsity Boys Golf Coach. Coach Carlson led the men's golf program at Pace University for nine years before serving as Director of Instruction at the Trump National Golf Club of Westchester, N.Y. the past four years. While at Pace, her team qualified for the Division II Northeast 10 Conference Regional tournament every year. As a professional golfer, Judy competed in the WGA British Victory Championship, the USGA Women's Metropolitan Open, the Connecticut Open, the LPGA NE Section Tournament and the LPGA Pro Am and Pro Ladies tournament.

Rishi Patel is our new Head Girls Tennis Coach. Coach Patel is a graduate of the University of the Pacific with a degree in history and is a Saint Stephen's alum. If his name looks familiar, all you have to do is look on the SSES tennis facility "Wall of Champions." As a Falcon, Coach Patel won several state championships as an individual and as a member of a doubles team. Last year, he assisted as our girls team won its 19th district championship. Rishi has also trained tennis players at KVAR, Longboat Key Club and El Conquistador Racquet Club.

Finally, with the new State Series format, we will have the opportunity to host many games leading up to district and regional championships, since the new format is "higher seeded school hosts." In 2018-19, we hosted district or regional tournament games in volleyball, football, cross country, boys basketball, girls basketball, boys soccer, girls soccer, track and field, boys tennis, girls tennis, baseball, softball, boys lacrosse, and girls lacrosse. This year, we will take a break from hosting many of the championship games to allow our coaches to focus solely on their teams and allow our volunteers to enjoy being spectators.

Through hard work, long hours, and a total commitment to our sport, to our school, and to each other we will build on the successes of last year! Remember, while others practice, we train; while others play, we compete; and while others dream, we do, because . . .

We are FALCONS!

MESSAGE FROM ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LENNY PAOLETTI

Page 4: 2019-20 SAINT STEPHEN’S ATHLETICS GUIDE · top 10 at state in four straight tournaments – Ryan Kinkead and David Hu (6th/9th in 2017), Alan Klenor (10th/2016), Justin Wynen (8th/2015)

CROSS COUNTRY

Both girls and boys teams found themselves on the bubble last season. The girls finished in the top half of the district as a team with only one runner, Taylor Vogt, among the top individuals. One other finisher among the top 15 would likely have allowed the girls to advance to region and then to state. Similarly, the boys finished strong at region, led by Michael Thomas, but were just a few place finishes shy of advancing to the state meet. That should change in 2019. Led by captains Janie Chatham and Jackson Dillingham, all but one of last year’s runners return this fall, including senior stalwart Jordan Stacy. The Falcons also face a realigned district and region that no longer sets them up against perennial power Oak Hall. A strong track season and increased dedication to summer conditioning has SSES taking aim at district and region trophies and their highest team finishes yet at the state meet on Nov. 9. The Falcons will look to make a splash to open their season on Aug. 9, at the new site of the district run, Southwest Florida Christian Academy.

BOYS GOLF

Boys golf has a storied history at Saint Stephen’s that includes a pair of state championships (2000 and 2004), a trio of prep All-Americans, and a lengthy roster of successful collegiate and professional performers. Recent Saint Stephen’s teams have kept that tradition of excellence alive. The Falcons have dominated local play, winning two district and three regional championships since 2014, and advanced to four consecutive state tournaments, finishing 5th (2014), 7th (2015), 3rd (2016), and 2nd (2017). Individually, a Saint Stephen’s golfer placed in the top 10 at state in four straight tournaments – Ryan Kinkead and David Hu (6th/9th in 2017), Alan Klenor (10th/2016), Justin Wynen (8th/2015) and Jack Cen (6th/2014). Last year’s team expectedly felt the losses of three Division I players (Ryan Kinkead- Boston College, Massimo Mbetse-USF and Klenor-FSU) and failed to three-peat as district champs. They will continue to rebuild this season under new head coach Judy Carlson.

GIRLS GOLF

The girls golf program at Saint Stephen’s has emerged as an annual contender for the state championship. Although the Falcons are still seeking their elusive first FHSAA team title, they have qualified for seven consecutive state championship tournaments and registered four Top-10 finishes, including taking the tenth-place spot in 2018. Saint Stephen’s has dominated district and regional play since 2012, winning district crowns in each of the past seven seasons and regional titles in six of the past seven campaigns. The 2019 Falcons will feel the loss of graduated seniors Catherine Huang and Kendall Miller, but have solid leadership returning in junior Maria Huang. She was the medalist at last year’s district tournament with the only under-par round. Huang then shot a combined 161 at the state tournament. The Falcons call the course at The Links at Greenfield Plantation their home and are led by veteran coach Letitia Zilar.

SWIMMING/DIVING

Senior co-captains Nicholas Mattheys and Anika Kennedy will lead the team this fall. Mattheys will be a threat to qualify for the state meet in several events and is within striking distance of several Falcon records. As 2018 district champion in the 50 free, Kennedy is in search of her first individual state appearance this fall. Having lost three senior state qualifiers, this will be a rebuilding year for the boys program. The girls relay teams will continue to be strong, with a goal to qualify a relay for state competition. Overall, the Falcons have substantial depth, with more than 40 swimmers on the roster. With half of these swimmers coming from the middle school or 6th grade, the building blocks for a strong program are being put in place. The 2019 team will look to continue its dual meet winning streak against Braden River, Manatee, Bayshore, Palmetto, and Bradenton Christian and also maintain its Sprint Cup championship title against ODA. The Falcons are focused on qualifying every swimmer for the district meet and a record number for regionals. The team will also travel to Atlanta in September to participate in its third Open Water swim event for Swim Across America. In total, SSES has raised more than $58,000 for cancer research.

VOLLEYBALL

Volleyball has become one of the most popular sports for girls at Saint Stephen’s and the Falcons have generated a number of successful teams in recent years. SSES won its first district title in 2010 and followed that up with another in 2012. Those two championship teams produced four future collegiate players. The 2019 Falcons will be looking to rekindle some of that fire following three consecutive losing seasons that have produced a combined record of just 22-28. Saint Stephen’s will continue its rebuilding process under the direction of new head coach Juan Garcia. Garcia comes to Saint Stephen’s from an athletic director’s position in Ohio, and with an extensive resume coaching at the interscholastic and club levels in Ohio and Tennessee. He inherits a team with some solid returning players to build around, including seniors Sarah Stevens and Kate Folkens, and sisters Ella and Julia Dodge.

BOYS BASKETBALL

The long climb of a rebuilding project inherited by Head Coach Dave Ruemenapp in 2016-17 reached its summit in 2018-19, as the Falcons went undefeated in district play and won the first district tournament championship in school history. Their 21-6 campaign created hoops hysteria like never before on campus. The Falcons have established a winning culture by qualifying for back-to-back post-season bids, their first since 1999. Ruemenapp took over a Saint Stephen’s program in 2016 that had not had a winning season since 2009-10, but he has lived up to his resume after directing impressive turnarounds of programs in Texas, North Carolina and Florida. The Falcons are 36-16 over the past two seasons and have only lost one regular-season district game during that stretch (19-1). The 2017-18 campaign produced the school’s first regional playoff berth in nearly two decades and the Falcons hosted a regional game last season. SSES has failed to advance past that regional playoff opener with losses to Naples First Baptist Academy (2018) and Fort Myers Canterbury (2019). That remains the next hurdle for Ruemenapp’s emerging Falcons to get over. Senior Ty Barker, the leading scorer (15 ppg) and No. 2 rebounder (7 rpg) from a year ago, will lead the way in 2019-2020 along with sturdy senior forward Cam Vining (6 ppg/3.5 rpg). Barker will no doubt finish his career as a 1,000-point, 500-rebound performer for the Falcons. With six graduated seniors having moved on, Ruemanapp will need some new faces and role players from a year ago like Matthew Konkol, Dylan Davis and Connor Davis to step forward and produce if the program is to continue its upward momentum.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

After not reaching the post-season since 1999, the Falcons have advanced to regional play as the district tournament runner-up in each of the past three seasons. SSES posted its first winning record (12-8) in nearly two decades in 2017-18 and won its first-ever regional playoff game, upsetting Naples First Baptist Academy on the road, 47-44, to advance to the regional final. Last year, the Falcons kept that momentum going by notching a 15-11 record and another regional appearance. They played their best basketball down the stretch, winning eight of their last 11 games. The Falcons’ recent stretch of success has produced a remarkable turnaround. Entering the 2016-17 season, Saint Stephen's had won just eight district games since 2006, and went winless in district play from 2009-2015. The Falcons have now posted a 17-9 district record the past three seasons. SSES won just five games in five seasons between 2009 and 2014, but has racked up 37 victories during the past three campaigns. Last season’s results were accomplished with a very thin roster that included 6-3 center Sarah Stevens playing in only the final 11 games of the campaign due to a broken leg. She averaged nearly a double-double (12.8 ppg/9.6 rpg) during her active stretch and will be counted on for big numbers as a senior in 2019-20. Under new head coach David Gaulman, the Falcons also return sophomore captain Jamie Springstead at guard. A fixture on the varsity roster since seventh grade, Springstead has the potential to be a double-figure scorer every night. With only two losses to graduation, there is experience on the roster despite the youth. Emerging players to watch include juniors Allie Serterides and Noelle Bencie, sophomore Nikole Cosentino, and sisters Kayleigh and Taylor Vogt. All of them averaged more than 10 minutes per game last season. They should take on bigger roles this season.

Page 9: 2019-20 SAINT STEPHEN’S ATHLETICS GUIDE · top 10 at state in four straight tournaments – Ryan Kinkead and David Hu (6th/9th in 2017), Alan Klenor (10th/2016), Justin Wynen (8th/2015)

WINTER SPORTSBOYS SOCCER

Very few high school programs – in any sport – have been as consistently successful as the Falcons. Saint Stephen’s has reached the state tournament four times since winning its lone title in 2001, and advanced to the final four in 2011, 2014 and 2015. SSES has an active streak of district championships dating back to 2011. In 25 seasons under former Head Coach Marc Jones, who retired following the 2017-18 season, the Falcons captured 19 district, nine regional, and one state championship. New Head Coach Stephen Adair continued that legacy in his debut last year, guiding SSES to a 14-4 record, a district title and regional playoff appearance. The Falcons have posted a 109-20-18 record since 2010-11. Their last district loss came during the 2009-10 season, a string of 56 games in which SSES is 53-0-3. Adair enters his second season at the helm of the Falcons in 2019-20 with a diverse squad of rising talent from the 8th grade, a group of athletic newcomers, talented returners, and a small core of veteran leadership. The biggest challenge will be to replace the production of graduated Noah LaBelle, who scored 23 of the team’s 59 total goals a year ago. Senior Jacob Whorf was the only other double-figure scorer (14 goals) and he will need to lead the offense. No other returning player scored more than twice. With uncertain scoring punch, the Falcons may have to lean on a stingy defense and senior goalkeeper RG Sherrill for success after averaging a miniscule 1.016 goals against per game last season. Newcomers to watch include freshman prospects Nolan Winterhalter, Aquiles Gonzales, and Anthony Monetti.

GIRLS SOCCER

Under first-year Head Coach Guy Virgilio in 2018-19, the Falcons captured their first district championship since 2014 and advanced to regional play. Saint Stephen’s opened the season 9-0 and was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 1A before dropping four of its last six. That didn’t take any of the luster off a season that started with few expectations but finished with signature wins over Manatee, Braden River and an undefeated district record. It was the renewal of a standard of success that defines the history of the program. Saint Stephen’s has had just one losing season and captured 11 district titles since 2000, including a string of five consecutive from 2008-12. The program obviously yielded immediate dividends in turning the reins over to Virgilio, one of the state’s most successful prep coaches. He was coaxed to leave Lakewood Ranch High after 18 seasons, where he led his teams to a combined record of 312-75-39, won 13 district championships, three regional championships, and appeared in three state Final Fours – the last in 2014. Virgilio and the Falcons will now look to build on their initial success, but they’ll have to do it without their two top scorers from a season ago. The leading returning goal-makers are junior Elle Johnston (7) and senior Jackie Schlossberg (6), but seven other returning players scored at least twice. Where the Falcons clearly established their identity under Virgilio, however, was on the defensive end. SSES allowed less than a goal per game (.405) and posted nine shutouts in 2018-19. The Falcons didn’t surrender their first goal until the seventh game of the season. Strong defense will continue to be key.

BASEBALL

The 2019 season proved to be sweet retribution. After posting their best record in many years in 2018 (17-5), the Falcons made a quick, unexpected and tough-to-swallow exit in the first round of the district tournament. But the veteran team bounced back in a big way from that disappointment in 2019, putting together an 18-8 record and a district runner-up finish that qualified SSES for its first regional playoff game (a 2-1 loss at Fort Myers Canterbury) since 2009. Gone is a large and accomplished senior class of eight who won 64 combined games the past four years. They set what had been a struggling program on the right path for the future. The 2020 Falcons will lean heavily on three veteran upperclassmen during the transition – senior pitcher/infielder Wyatt Sevin (.348), junior pitcher/infielder Brock Soletti and junior first baseman Peter Balos (.307). All three drove in double-digit runs last season. Soletti (7-1) and Sevin (5-2) were the team’s top two starters and Soletti, a junior, led the staff with a 1.32 ERA and 50 strikeouts. Starting right fielder Luke Donley (.286) also returns. Saint Stephen’s is coached by veteran Head Coach Mike Verrill and former Major League star Scott Eyre. In 2019, Verrill was selected for induction into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame. He coached high school baseball for 20 years in the state and also served as an assistant at Bowdoin College. Eyre played 13 seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies. The quirky left-hander made 617 big league appearances, which included leading the majors with 86 in relief for the Giants in 2005.

BOYS LACROSSE

Lacrosse is one of the newest programs on campus. The 2020 season will be just Saint Stephen’s seventh as an FHSAA-sanctioned program. After posting the first winning season in school history in 2018 (11-9) and exceeding all expectations, the 2019 Falcons had an up-and-down campaign. A promising 5-2 start evaporated as SSES stumbled, losing five of its last six, and failed to qualify for the district tournament. Seniors Jarrett Millican and Colin Varady made enough of an impact to earn Sarasota Herald-Tribune all-area honors on their way out. While competitive strides have been made, the next step is to become relevant in district play and a challenger to the league’s upper echelon – Cardinal Mooney, Sarasota Riverview, and Out-of-Door Academy. That will be the challenge for a new coaching staff as Head Coach Dan Rice stepped aside at the end of the 2019 season after two years on the sideline for the Falcons. Many of the building blocks for the team are now growing into upperclassmen, led by seniors Caden Milburn and Julian Sedillo, and junior Cade Ryskamp. They have all played significant roles during the program’s rise and should be counted on to provide leadership. If the Falcons can make a jump forward in 2020 the way they did in 2018, it will be an impressive feat and help solidify the program as one to be reckoned with in the future.

SPRING SPORTSGIRLS LACROSSE

No sports program at Saint Stephen’s evolved from birth to district champion faster than girls lacrosse, and the Falcons won three straight from 2016-18. After starting as a club team in 2009, the program reached varsity status in 2013 and didn’t take long to taste success. Teams comprised entirely of underclassmen and middle school students appeared in district title games in 2014 and 2015, before raising the championship trophy for the first time in 2016. The 2017 Falcons (15-6) repeated as district champions and won a first-round state play-in game for the second consecutive year. The 2018 season brought a third straight district title and the Falcons’ (15-5) deepest post-season run ever. SSES captured two regional playoff games and reached the state’s Elite Eight before finally bowing out of the tournament. The 2019 squad wasn’t able to maintain that momentum with two gaping holes to fill after the graduations of All-Americans Katie Pierce (American University) and Baylee Barker (Rhodes). Three-time All-American midfielder Kendall Miller provided leadership and offensive production – including an amazing 17-goal performance in a win against Venice – but that proved to be one of just five victories on the season as the Falcons were done in by their youth and inexperience. SSES will continue its rebuilding project for 2019-20. With no established stars to lean on, seniors Kyra Marshall and Selina Yathiraj, and juniors Taylor Vara and Sophia Sanchez should take on bigger roles.

SOFTBALL

Saint Stephen’s has built a softball tradition that, since 2001, includes seven district titles and appearances in regional championship games in 2015 and 2018. The 2019 team, despite an unexpected early exit from the district tournament, set the tone for what should be an incredibly bright future. Amazingly, the Falcons rode the talents of four middle school student-athletes to an 18-5 record. Saint Stephen’s opened the season 8-0 and 13-1, and was ranked at or near the top of the state’s Class 3A standings into early April. After going 9-1 in regular-season district play and sweeping local rival Bradenton Christian, the Falcons were plagued by fielding errors and dug themselves a 7-0 hole before falling 10-5 to the Panthers in the district tournament semi-finals. It was a bitter ending to a promising season, but great things are ahead. Seventh graders Alex Call, Julia Girk and Ella Dodge, along with eighth grader Ella Torres were the team’s statistical leaders. They finished as the top four hitters in the lineup. Each batted over .400, led by Girk’s amazing .632 average. Call and Torres paced the team with 24 RBI apiece, and Dodge and Torres pitched more than 100 innings combined and registered more than 150 strikeouts. The quartet also accounted for 36 of the team’s 51 extra-base hits and all four home runs. They figure to be the backbone of the program for years to come, with three still in middle school when the 2020 season opens. The Falcons are led by Head Coach Shannon Dodge, a former star at the University of South Florida

BOYS TENNIS

With four state championship teams and multiple singles and doubles titles to its credit, boys tennis is one of the most decorated programs in Saint Stephen’s athletics history. The Falcons have captured 15 district, six regional, and four state crowns – the first in 1986 and their most recent in 2015. The 2019 Falcons continued that strong tradition under head coach Scott Shields, winning district and regional titles, and advancing all the way to the Class 1A state championship match before finishing as state runner-up with a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Boca Raton St. Andrews in the tournament finale. The Falcons have gone 31-6 over the past three seasons in dual matches and will have to replace the steady production of graduates Max Damm and Max Petrov. Damm had a career record of 36-5, won two district singles titles, three district doubles titles, two state doubles runner-ups and a state doubles championship. Petrov was 40-3 as a Falcon with three district singles and doubles crowns. In 2019, he recorded the most singles (11) and doubles (10) victories on the team. Despite those roster losses, Saint Stephen’s should be a contender again in 2020 with six talented players returning, led by No. 1 singles/doubles player Kevin Jiang. Also back on the court are senior Max Bonte and junior Gleb Ibragimov, who both won district singles and doubles titles last year, along with promising youngsters Leonardo Dal Boni, Jake Pettingell and Ricardo Perazzolo.

GIRLS TENNIS

No program at Saint Stephen’s has produced more state championships or featured more high-profile players than girls tennis. The Falcons have collected seven Florida team titles overall, including a run of four consecutive from 1986-89. Only three other schools in state girls tennis history can boast longer streaks. The Falcons’ run of consecutive titles in the late 80s was fueled by players including Terri and Sherri Vitale, Laura Randmaa, Cymantha Owen, Victoria Jarrell, Madeline Sanchez, Donna Faber and Diana Van Gulick. All went on to establish themselves as top players beyond Saint Stephen’s. The Vitales (daughters of famed ESPN broadcaster Dick Vitale) starred at Notre Dame, with Terri leading the Irish to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1993. Randmaa began her college career at LSU but transferred to Florida State, where she reached the NCAA doubles quarterfinals and was an All-American in 1993. Van Gulick won 74 career doubles matches at Clemson and was named All-ACC in 1990. Sanchez starred at Tulane and Faber was a successful touring pro, playing multiple Grand Slam events between 1988-93. The Falcons are still an annual contender at the state level, winning nine regional titles since 2005. They have lost just two regular-season matches in the past three seasons and have qualified for the state championship tournament in four of the past six years, including advancing all the way to the semifinal round in 2017. The 2019 team won the district title, the program’s third straight and fifth in six years. That young team will be anchored this season by senior Laura Perazzolo, who finished as state runner-up last year in doubles with partner Paradise Traub.

TRACK AND FIELD

Girls: The team saw a huge increase in participation in 2019, including a number of impactful newcomers. The Falcons finished fifth in the district and captain Demi Harms qualifed for regionals in the 300 hurdles. The 800-meter relay team of Janie Chatham, Jordan Stacy, Taylor Vogt, and Ayla Johnston advanced to the state meet for the first time in school history and finished 16th. Despite losing graduates Johnston, Ashleigh Rodhouse, and Kendall Miller, the team has talent and numbers returning as they battle for their first district title.

Boys: The 2019 team was led by tri-captains Jackson Dillingham, Matthew Kinkead, and Dylan Davis. All three return for their senior year. The Falcons put on strong performances at the district and regional meets and advanced to the state championship for the fifth consecutive season. Dillingham qualified individually in the 800-meter run. Two-time district shot put champion Dylan Davis also advanced and medaled with a third-place finish. The boys 4x800 (sixth) and 4x400 (11th) relay teams helped the Falcons finish 20th overall in the state.

It’s not a stretch to say that Saint Stephen’s football has become the standard of excellence that all other schools measure themselves against in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. The Falcons have made four consecutive appearances in the SSAC Florida Bowl and won back-to-back independent state championships in 2016 and 2017.Although they weren’t able to capture the school’s third straight SSAC title in 2018, falling to Orlando Christian Prep in the championship game, the Falcons capped off a four-year run in which they compiled a 41-5 record. That stretch has been the culmination of a journey that seemed almost unimaginable when the program was relaunched in 2006 after more than a 30-year hiatus.

Under two different head coaches, Saint Stephen’s failed to produce a winning season between 2006 and 2010 and went a combined 17-27, but the steady climb up

the ladder of success began with the hiring of Head Coach Tod Creneti in 2011. After a winless first season, Creneti’s teams have gone 59-20, including 11-1 and 11-0 in their back-to-back state title campaigns. Those numbers, however, don’t completely tell the tale of the Falcons’ recent dominance.

Over the past four seasons, SSES has outscored opponents by an average margin of 38-13, and the Falcons won 24 consecutive games and went 743 days between defeats from Aug. 26, 2016 to Sept. 7, 2018. Last year’s team defied expectations by going 10-2 while replacing nearly its entire offensive production from the year prior. The 2019 Falcons will again rely on some new faces to step forward, but there is a strong returning foundation upon which to build.

Leading the charge will be junior running back D.J. Clark, who literally burst on the scene last season, and Division I prospects and two-way standouts Dylan Davis and Cam Vining.

Clark put together one of the finest campaigns in SSES history last year, rushing for more than 1,600 yards and 21 touchdowns. He displayed a rare combination of power and speed, averaging a healthy 8.8 yards each time he touched the football. The offense will no doubt lean on him heavily again in 2019.

If Clark provides the flash, Davis and Vining – who hold offers from West Point, among others – are the hammers. An all-state selection as a junior, Davis ably anchors both lines for the Falcons. He clears the way for the offense and led the team a season ago with 20 tackles for loss, five sacks, and 16 quarterback hurries. Vining, the team’s emotional leader, was limited a bit by a leg injury in 2018, but still collected more than 60 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception. He is a heat-seeking missile from his linebacker spot.

Also returning is the team’s leading pass receiver in Ty Barker. The senior made 24 grabs for more than 300 yards a season ago and scored four times. Another two-way player, Barker is also a key on the defensive side of the field as a hybrid safety/linebacker.

Juniors Matthew Konkol (26 tackles, 10 receptions) and Calvin Sauerbeck (66 tackles, four caused fumbles, one interception) will be counted on for consistent production and leadership. Senior Alex Sket and junior Brock Gay will join Davis as important players in the trenches.

Finding a new quarterback to manage the offense will be a big key in determining how far the Falcons will go in 2019. Senior Trystan Brown took most of the snaps in the spring and would appear to be the first option for the coaching staff. Also, keep an eye on Palmetto High School transfer Dylan Zervos, a junior.

The emergence of Saint Stephen’s football has clearly created a new sense of excitement on campus. Friday game nights have become prime-time events, thanks to the high-powered Falcons and the enthusiastic green & gold-clad fans who regularly fill the state-of-the-art Moore Athletic Complex at Turner Fields. The 2019 schedule features annual league games that add spice with local rivals Bradenton Christian and Out-of-Door Academy. SSES and ODA play yearly for the Headmaster’s Cup, a series the Falcons have owned since 2013 with seven consecutive victories. The season opens with a rematch of the 2017 SSAC championship game when Windermere Prep visits the MAC. The Falcons also face a rare public school opponent when they host Englewood Lemon Bay on Sept. 13.
