Iron Sights and Optics 5.56/223 Shooting Competition

Introduction: To build cohesion among states and regions as well as the spirit of competition; APIII has put together a shooting competition to be conducted in states as well as between states within a region. Regions may also conduct shooting competitions with other regions bringing their top 10 shooters directly into competition with each other.

Rules of Documentation

1. Each competitor pays a 20 dollar entry feea. The 20 dollar entry fee can be waved for a maximum of 3 members in a state if the

state used money collected to buy the appropriate targets for the competition. (a receipt must be posted on the regional page for the state that has done this as well as the three names (3 maximum per state) in which the entry fee is accounted for in the price of the targets. (100 targets is roughly 60 dollars give or take a little)

b. A member may sponsor another member and put up the entry fee for someone else so long as the name of the shooter is recorded and the money is accounted for.

2. Each state records and collects their own money in their state and records it for record with in their own state and their regional page

3. Each state records in their own state the names of the shooters and presents a list of shooters and total money collected in a word document and posts within their regional page.

4. The deadline to enter this competition is January 5 2019 and the competition begins on DEC 22 2018. It will run through until March 5th 2019. A winner will be declared in March of 2019 unless in the event of a tie or multiple ties it becomes extended. The furthest it can be extended is MARCH 22 2019. ALL shooters must understand they must shoot for the competition by 1159 pm PST on March 5th 2019. IF they fail to do so their entry fee is forfeit. Any ties must be completed before 1159 pm PST March 22 2019. If a top shot who has tied does not shoot for the tie breaker/s before the date of March 22 2019 1159 pm PST they forfeit.

Rules for Fairness

1. The ironsight competition and the optics competition are two separate competitions with two separate entry fees. Iron sights do not compete against optics or vice versa. a. When using iron sights any type of iron sight will do whether they are fixed or flip up

on a rail. Absolutely no optics of any kind. Front sight and rear sight, again no optics.1. This will be checked at the start of the competitors run and will be on film live. 2. At no time will the shooter use any type of other sight for the run

Page 2: +shooting...  · Web viewThe competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person

b. When using optics the max optic magnification is 4x32. If you have an optic more powerful or an adjustable, for example, 4-16x32 you are not allowed to compete with that type of optic. *REVISION: if you have an optic that can be adjusted beyond 4x you may compete but the optic must be verified on film prior to shooting that it is set to 4X and nothing more. If caught cheating you will be disqualified. Your money is forfeit and you will most likely be removed from APIII and known throughout the country as a cheater. So do not do it 1. Holographic and red dot sites are permitted. If you have a reflex site with

holograph and magnifier the magnifier cannot be anything more than 4x2. Before the start of the shooters run this will be verified on film and live. Same

rules apply you cannot adjust sights to anything other then what is verified. If your optic can magnify more than 4x you will not be able to use that optic.

c. The name of manufacturer, type, and serial number of your optic will also be presented and documented by the grader.

d. If these rules are violated the competitor automatically forfeits their entry fee, their score will not count and that person will be referenced to chain of command for violations of code of conduct

Filming/Live

1. The competitor will let their chain of command know 24 hours in advance before their run. Of course, the competitor may let them know well before that 24 hour mark but they need to again remind them at the 24 hours before they do their run. They will let them know approximately what time they will begin their run. The proper COC then posts the announcement date and approximate time that their shooter will do their run. a. The competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one

grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person filming does not have access to the regional page they will be given temporary access in order to post the live shoot to the regional fb page.

b. The 24 hour notice is to give everyone time to either watch or to make the allowances necessary for a good clean shoot.

2. There is no handicapped score for weather or acts of God. If it is snowing it is snowing if it is raining it is raining. If your glasses get fogged up they are fogged up If God curves your round He curves your round. Weapons malfunctions can be an alibi.

3. If a weapon malfunctions during the shoot the competitor announces the malfunction. The grader then stops the stop watch and the competitor clears the malfunction. Depending on what type of malfunction should dictate the length of the stop but naturally the contest should begin again as soon as it is safe to do so without unnecessary delay

4. When the shooting team (consisting of a minimum of 3 persons) arrives and is ready to shoot several things must be on film and live.

Page 3: +shooting...  · Web viewThe competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person

a. The distance of 25 meters must be recorded and measured liveb. The weapon must be examined on camera and if an optic is used must be documented

according to the rules above. (please see optics rules) c. Once the distance is verified the shooters position and measured distance, the grader

fixes and secures one scorecard. This is done live as welld. The shooter gets into first firing position on live streame. The grader will announce go by a predetermined announcement agreed upon by him

and the shooter and at the start time begins. f. The live stream is continual throughout the shooters run. When completed and the

time limit is reached and assuming no alibi to weapon malfunction all three walk together to the score card and the grader grades the sheet with a red sharpie on live stream. The camera man then hands the live stream to the grader who then verifies the score card with a green sharpie. After both verifications are complete the shooter signs the scorecard in blue sharpie.

g. Only one shooting run per competitor. You may not pay another entry fee and try again

h. You may enter once in the ironsights competition and you may enter once in the optics competition provided you pay two separate entry fees and two registration forms

i. After it is all done wrap it up and you may end live feed. If for any reason live feed is interrupted, It must be done again from the beginning. If the live feed is interrupted but the recording is clean it does not have to be done again. The main objective is to have a clean recording of everything happening from start to finish. If it is interrupted just before the tallying of the scorecard it is forfeit and you do not get to shoot again. This is a harsh rule but a necessity. Clean live recording without interruptions from start to finish is essential!!!!

j. AMMENDMENT : It is understood that some shooting areas for people will not have capability to live stream. In this event an uninterrupted video from beginning to end must be submitted the day of the verified shoot for the competitor. No interruptions in the video to be verified as factual by the designated state leads for this competition.

k. If state leads are not able or willing to participate and you are in the region but want to participate go through zone command. Please get in touch with Nathan Vigil on FB

Money/Award

1. The first-place winner will receive a minute man Trophy for their efforts along with the prize money.a. The funds collected for the entry fee will be collected by each state. When the winner

is declared one state will buy the trophy and have it engraved using the entry fee

Page 4: +shooting...  · Web viewThe competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person

money. The amount for this trophy can be anywhere between 40 and 150 dollars. It will be determined by the state CO’s and regional CO

b. The rest of the money will be split up to the winner, 2nd place (who may receive a plaque as well as funds) and third place (who also may receive a plaque and funds) The dispersing will be 80% of the remaining funds to the 1st place winner 12% to the second-place shooter and 8% to the third-place shooter.

MINOR Changes to the scorecard and rules

Below you will read the rules of the military shoot for the paper targets. The time limits do not change

120 seconds for prone supported (this can be supported by sandbags, tripod, bipod, whatever the shooter feels is supporting their position.)

60 Seconds for the prone unsupported. I.E the shooter has no support for the steadying of the rifle other than their two hands and two arms. The rifle cannot rest on ANYTHING or be supported by a bipod, tripod etc.

60 seconds for the kneeling position

Page 5: +shooting...  · Web viewThe competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person

As long as a minimum of one knee is on the ground and one foot is on the ground the shooter can fire. However, the shooters buttocks may not touch the ground

The only two acceptable kneeling positions are as follows.

*Notice in the second position the shooter is sitting on his own leg. This is acceptable

When reading the rules by Army standard note a few more things

1. You can only have the allotted number of shots in each silhouetteAs follows for a perfect score of 40/40

50 meters- 5 hits100 meters- 5 hits in each of the 100 meter target150 meters- 4 hits in each of the 150 meters200 meters- 3 hits for each of the 200 meter target250 meters- 3 hits 300 meters- 3 hits

Page 6: +shooting...  · Web viewThe competitor needs a minimum of 3 people to complete this task. One shooter one grader/timekeeper and one person to film the shoot live. If the person

Anything less obviously does not give you a credit for a hit and anything more allotted in each silhouette does not count. Example: you cannot have 6 shots in the 50-meter target and have it counted. Only 5 would count towards your score *If more than 40 rounds are fired the shooter will be disqualified

If less they will not get an alibi. It is important that you have the proper number of rounds for each table (firing position) during the competition. Again 1 20 round magazine for prone supported 1 10 round magazine for prone unsupported, 1 10 round magazine for kneeling.

If any part of the silhouette is broken by a round it counts as a hit. If the silhouette is broken even if it is tiny, but clearly broken, it counts as a hit.

It does not matter in which order the shooter engages the targets!!! After each position time limit is reached the grader will not go to the target and see what a hit is or miss nor will they see what targets were engaged and will not grade on such. This negates parts of the rules in the Army standard for table 1-table 3 (please see below)

Clarification: if a shooter wants to put all three shots in the 300-meter target in the first iteration of fire (table 1 prone supported,) then that is allowed, and, in any target, they want to shoot. As long as they are attempting to put the right number of rounds in each silhouette.

The transition between firing positions should take no longer than 30 seconds. The shooter will let the grader know when “ready” and the grader will let the shooter know when time has started to engage targets.

In the event of a tie and all competitors have been accounted for March 6 2019 will be the date to let the top shooters who have tied know that they are still in competition. They then must do it again in competition with the other shooters who have tied until a winner emerges. If there are multiple ties between several shooters more than once then the time frame for the shooting will be shortened. Instead of 120 seconds in the prone supported you will have 100 seconds. In the other two tables you will have 50 seconds. If it occurs for a third time the time for the 1st table (position) will be shortened to 60 seconds of engagement in the prone unsupported and 45 seconds in each of the other two tables. (prone unsupported, kneeling)

FINAL and IMPORTANT!!!!

IF the shooters are unclear about the rules make sure that it is clear before they engage. Once the shooter engages and records it is OFFICIAL for this competition and there will not be any alibis given.
