Professional Development Chairperson's message,

This year we are honored to have the WestBank First Nations partner with us to offer our

Indigenous Summit. We have been invited on their land to learn about indigenous traditions and

ways of knowing. The goal of the summit is to help educators feel comfortable indigenizing and

incorporating Aboriginal worldviews and local indigenous ways into school culture. Our second

goal is to continue on the “How” part of our Reconciliation and to commit to an act of

reconciliation for the year.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Chief Roxanne Lindley of the Westbank First Nation for

her support, guidance, direction and participation in making this summit possible. I would also

like to thank Councillor Fernanda Alexander for her participation and direction in this summit.

There are a number of other people who have made this summit possible as well. They are Lori

Dawson Bedard, Armelle Moran, John Kramer, Kevin Kaiser, Joanne Deguevara, Kelly

Andrews, Kelly Hanson, Melissa Harris, Mike Ross, Katie Nault, Karen Nightingale, David

Lafontaine, Lynda Ross, Carey Bodeux, and a special thank you to Terry Beaudry.

We are also offering four other options during our Summer Professional Development Days.

These options are to support and continue building on established practices.

Have a wonderful summer break and I look forward to seeing you at our Summer Professional

Development Days.

Option 1 - Indigenous Summit – 3 days

Option 2 - Mindfulness

Option 3 - Reggio Inspired Environment

Option 4 - Curriculum Focus

Option 5 - BCTF Boundaries Workshop

REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED to secure your spot

Option 1 – There are three days to this Summit

CSSW 16600 - Indigenous Summit – 3 days - Time: 8:30am - 2:30pm

COTA has partnered with the Westbank First Nations to support educators to bring in local indigenous knowledge,

perspectives and teachings into their classrooms.

1. Tuesday, Aug. 28 – DAY 1 Location: Sensisyusten House of Learning

The first day participants will hear stories from local and invited guests on their experiences growing up. There will be circle groups

led by local elders, knowledge keepers and invited guests to bring together our two cultures and discuss ways we can move forward

with reconciliation. Participants will also be invited to experience the Blanket Exercise. An experiential exercise that will help

participants understand how colonization of the land has impacted the people who lived here long before settlers arrived. Through this

exercise participants will explore the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada, how this

relationship has been damaged over the years, and how we can work toward reconciliation.

2. Wednesday, Aug. 29 – DAY 2 - Electives: REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for these workshops

Location: Glenrosa Middle School & Westbank First Nation Sites

The second day is designed to support participants to bring quality, authentic First Peoples teaching and learning into classrooms. The

workshops will be offered in the classroom as well as on the land.

3. Thursday, Aug. 30 – Option 1: DAY 3 Location: Westbank First Nation's Beach, Sensisyusten, Pavillion and Sport's Field

The third day participants will take part in a Water Ceremony led by Chief Roxanne Lindley and Elders. Participants will have a

chance to experience, learn traditional skills, and reflect on reconciliation through a variety of learning experience stations. “Paddling

for Reconciliation” is an ALL DAY event at WFN beach and Sensisyusten. As the final session of three days of professional

development on Indigenous content and perspectives and the redesigned BC curriculum, this day will focus on reconciliation. The Truth

and Reconciliation Report (TRC) describes reconciliation as an “ongoing process of establishing and maintaining respectful

relationships” (TRC, 2015, p.11).

Together we ask: What if the teaching and learning focus of our classroom was reconciliation and practices of making connections,

relationships and healing. This celebratory gathering is an opportunity for those involved with schools to explore their commitment to

reconciliation education in the Okanagan through experiences with Land, arts and food. The day will culminate in a salmon feast.

The afternoon is a time of celebration as well as reflecting, discussing, sharing stories, and looking ahead at what act you can commit to

in your reconciliation journey. Put your ideas into writing and share them with a friend. The focus for COTA’s upcoming Inquiry

Projects will be aligned to acts of reconciliation. This will be a good opportunity for you and your team to have time during the year to

work on your project.

Please note: There is no parking at Sensisyusten & at the WFN Beach on Tuesday & Thursday.

Parking and Bussing will be available at selected schools.

Information will follow.

Indigenous Wood Carving

Presenter Name: Darren McKenzie

Location: Glenrosa Middle School – 2974 Glen Abbey Place, West Kelowna

In this workshop I teach Northwest Coast carving using traditional materials such as cedar, birch and alder.

Workshop participants learn to work with the wood grain, use a variety of carving knives, and learn about

traditional artistic symbols, figures, and legends while creating a hands-on project.

My aim is to immerse people in the experience of carving as our Indigenous ancestors once did. As

participants explore the complexities of creating something as simple as a kitchen tool, they may use their

imagination to understand what it might have been like to be an Indigenous person thousands of years ago.

This gives the participant a historical view of our ancestral beginnings, and an appreciation for the survival,

adaptability, and contributions of Indigenous peoples.

Target Audience: Educators, Counsellors, Anyone who works with youth

Presenter Abstract:

An Indigenous artist with knowledge of advanced design, ceremonial rituals, ethnology, and master

technical applications, Darren McKenzie was instilled with the value of passing on this knowledge to

succeeding generations. In addition, he seeks opportunities to use art as a bridge to connect with all

cultures.

As a young artist, Darren attended the Gitanmaax School of Northwest Coast Indian Art and Design in

Hazelton, B.C. Darren completed an intensive and culturally engrossing four-year apprenticeship, studying

with master carver, Ken Mowatt.

Darren, now a master carver, himself, currently resides in Kelowna, B.C. where he continues to create,

sell, and teach art.

instruments to obtain images and spectra of astronomical objects) through hands-on exploration with lenses,

mirrors, binoculars, and telescopes. We will be responsive to the needs of the teacher participants, and tailor

our activities accordingly. Teacher participants will leave with a wide range of resources, including "Reasons

for the Seasons" (a guide for seasons-related activities put together for a teachers' workshop in Whitehorse),

How to engage elementary students with Core Competencies, Career Education, and Portfolio Building

With Career Education now spanning K-12, many districts are investigating how to best support teaching the

Big Ideas, Curricular Competencies, and Content in the elementary years. As a key player in the Canadian

career education market, already partnering with 50+ districts in BC, myBlueprint wanted to ensure that

reflection of the Core Competencies, and goal setting - all while building a lasting K-12 portfolio.

During this session, we will explore the All About Me (K-6) Portfolio, discuss best practices and
