2018 September Script Shores Hampstead United Methodist Church
“As the story goes, a member was overheard complaining to the church Stew-ardship chairperson: ‘Give, give, GIVE! That’s all I ever HEAR out of the Church -- give, give, give!’ The steward smiled and said ‘"Yes, I think that best defines both Christ AND His Church -- give, give, give!’ ” In most of His parables, Jesus includes reflections on value -- on that which means most in life. We hold onto things which are precious to us -- our families, our careers, our homes, etc. For the coming year, as a Church and as individuals, we need to confirm where church fits in our priorities, how much our church means to us, and how precious our Lord Jesus is to us. Our devotion is best reflected in how we fulfill our baptismal vows, in our disciplined of-fering of prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness-- for in so doing, we tell Jesus what is most precious! I believe our Lord God has great things ahead for our church! I hope you do, too! Only time will define "great" for HUMC. That definition will not depend on God's level of participation and com-mitment with us, for God is always with us, and is fully (eternally!) invested and committed to us! The definition of "great" to be record-ed in our history will be determined by our level of participation with, and commitment to, God and His Church! God asks for, and deserves, our "first fruits" -- with His needs receiving equal considera-tion with all the other demands on our time, talent and resources. Another item is our intentionality in evangelism. We are once again attempting to build a team of folks who feel that the primary purpose of the church is to share the Gospel and make disciples (remember, the purpose of the United Methodist Church is: "Making Disciples for Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World"!) Of all the things we do as a church and as the Body of Christ, the final meas-ure of success is "Are new people coming to Jesus?" We have received requests from Arbor Landing to help pro-vide worship and spiritual experiences to the newly arriving commu-nity. We’re gonna take that request very seriously and joyfully, as it

has come from God, and get involved with the residents! Same with the new folks at Sparrow’s Bend! When the lists for teams and events go up, volunteer! It really does feel good doing something for some-one else! Lastly, as the Nominations team builds our leadership slate for 2019-2021, several things come to mind. Firstly, we have had a wonderful response in volunteerism! Many of you have come to me HOLDING the “available position” slips that were on the easel in the narthex! I am most blessed for your willingness to volunteer and serve! We will also need numerous folks on the service teams (such as worship, missions, stewardship, reception, acolyting, etc.) I pray that you will make it your business to volunteer! If you try something for a year, and it isn’t what you thought it would be, we will make a change! But I urge you: give it a try! There are more, and I hope you will make it your personal responsibility to get involved, to make a difference, to be a part of something larger than yourself, something that will last throughout the length and breadth of time! This is the arena in which God lives and moves and has HIS being -- and He offers it to us! GBY! See you in church! Skip

HUMC Library News
Did you know we have a library at HUMC? Really, we do in Room 3, and it has lots of wonder-ful books on the shelves…..Bibles (of course), Christian fiction, commentaries, apologetics, and inspi-rational. There is also an assortment of CD’s and DVD’s. No need to visit Pender Library, or buy your next book from Amazon, just check it out at your church library! We encourage everyone to spend a few minutes there before or after service, review the titles and borrow one to read at home. You will be blessed.
(Books with colored stickers are part of the UMW Reading Program. If you borrow one of these we ask that you remove the card from the pocket inside the cover; sign and date the card and place it inside the file box alphabetically by title. When you return the book, pull your card and re-place it in the book pocket.)
Thank You!

Children & Youth Ministries
YOUTH MEETINGS BEGIN SEPTEMBER 6, 2018! We will all be meeting together for the first
youth meeting from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. All are invited to attend!
POWER KIDS BEGINS SEPTEMBER 12, 2018! We encourage all elementary age children to
join us on Wednesday evenings for a VBS style meeting. You do not need to be a member of
this church in order to enjoy Power Kids. We meet from 6:00pm to 7:30 every Wednesday.
Look forward to seeing you all there!
PUMPKIN PATCH COORDINATOR NEEDED! For years Angie Major has been our go to per-
son for the Pumpkin Patch, but she is stepping away from this position. We need a new coor-
dinator! If you have wanted to help with the youth, but not sure where or if you have the
time, this is the perfect opportunity! The patch almost runs itself! Please contact Melody
Doyle, [email protected], if you are interested in this awesome ministry.
PUMPKIN PATCH SETUP WILL BE SEPTEMBER 22, 2018 AT 10:00AM! We will be placing all
of the pallets out on that day and need as many working hands as possible. Trucks and fork
lift would be greatly appreciated! Youth are expected to be there setting up and pumpkin
bucks will be rewarded to any middle or senior high youth who dedicate their time to the
patch!
THE PUMPKINS ARE COMING, THE PUMPKINS ARE COMING!! Mark your calendars for the
annual pumpkin toss on September 29, 2018 at 9:00am. Many hands are needed not just
from HUMC but from the whole Hampstead Community! This is a wonderful opportunity to
reach out to so many who do not have a home church. Invite a friend, neighbor, football,

baseball, soccer teams! We welcome anyone willing to toss a pumpkin or fifty, to get the
patch ready for a fantastic month! Sign-up sheets are in the narthex for volunteering time in
the patch. Remember that the patch cannot open without an adult present to chaperon the
youth. There are two sign-up sheets, one for adults and the other for the youth. This ministry
has been at HUMC for many, many years and is the sole fundraiser for the youth. This pro-
vides them the opportunity to go on many of the youth mission trips. Many thanks to all in
advance for helping us out, and I look forward to seeing you all at the Patch!

Fall Festival Basket Auction
As we mentioned last month, we are going to have a Basket Auction at the Fall Festival
and we need your help!
We will be doing a Chinese Auction of baskets that will be worth at least $50 each.
To date we have 10 baskets donated including a Golf basket with a round of golf and food
voucher at Olde Point Golf Course, a reading basket with books, gift card, reading light, a
beach themed basket, a Simply Southern Basket and several more. We really need your help
with either creating a themed basket or a cash donation so we can make one up for you!
If you are part of a group here at the church and would like to do a basket together, that
would be awesome. So far we have one of the Sunday School class doing 2 baskets and the
flower Guild doing 2 baskets. We encourage other groups to participate as well.
If you own your own business and can donate goods or services or work for a business
that would be willing to make a donation, we welcome that as well. A single donation can be
in any amount. We can put a couple of donations together to make up a basket.
Donations of any kind are greatly appreciated.
Won’t you please consider helping us???
For more information, please contact:
Marilyn Flanders at 270-1091 or [email protected] or
Donna Kurtz at 270-2624 or [email protected].
Thank you very much!

Preschool News The Children’s Wing will soon be filled with the sound of little
people happily playing and learning. We are ready and eager to
welcome children and parents alike into our preschool family and
get the 26th year of HUMC Preschool off to a great start!
September’s curriculum topic is All About Me and Feelings; the character topic is
Respect; the devotion is God’s good rules, the Ten Commandments. A most important
bible verse to get the year started off right is Luke 6:31:
“Treat others the same way you want them to treat you.”
Open house is Tuesday, September 5th from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Classes begin the
following morning at 9:00 am.
On Sunday, September 2nd, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the
Griggs Scholarship Fund. Though there is a monthly tuition fee to attend, we have never
turned away anyone because they couldn’t pay. With the Griggs Fund, we are able to
offer assistance to families who want their children to attend, but find the cost of tuition
a little too much to bare. It gives them a sigh of relief and affords us the ability to not
only be a preschool, but a ministry in the business of helping others in our community.
For more information about our program, visit the church website, call at 910-270-
3388, or email us at [email protected].
Thank you church family and friends for your continued support. Please keep us in
your prayers as we go about the business of “training up” God’s children.
Peace and prayers,
Judy Lane

Recent events: Irrigation lines were cleared in a portion of the

a new stop sign was installed at the entrance/exit point to the
church parking lot.
Upcoming Events: Low Country Boil scheduled for November 10th.
As always-UMM Breakfast 1st Saturday of every month.
Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be pa-
tient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Romans 12:11-12 NIV
How many of us have wondered about being ‘constant in prayer’? Keeping spiritual fervor? Or
better yet, being patient in tribulation? With all the external influences around us, the struggles we
all face, how can we possibly adhere to what scripture requires of us? What are some ways you stay
focused, or do you? Bible aps/studies, church activities, Christian radio, etc.. are some ways to help.
We need to be more determined to use some of those methods, but why does it seem that the radio
portion is filled with static more times than not. Static that breaks our focus (Seriously, secular sta-
tions always seem clear as a bell)! Perhaps, that is the time we need to truly be in prayer; cut the ra-
dio off, cut the phone off and focus on the silence. Thinking of family, friends, people needing pray-
er, people needing our presence. Where is the static in your life? Are you using it to help move you
closer to God, or are you just changing the station?
Shalom,
Al Smith

MUNCH—BackPack Meals Program
We expect that by the time you read this article, school will be back in session.
Happy parents, sad children! For most, everyone is ready for school to start again.
We anticipate that we will be adding the new Surf City school into our program. That will
make 5 schools that we service here in Eastern Pender County! It’s exciting to know that
MUNCH is one of the largest outreach missions in this area. We expect 100+ backpacks to be
sent home each weekend! That consumes a lot of resources each week.
Hopefully, you are a contributor – either food or monetary donation on a regular basis!
Our food bin is located in the south hallway adjacent to the Narthex.
The following are our regular items that we can always use:.
Pasta Sauce (24 oz. can/plastic)
Pasta 1lb box
Spaghetti O’s or store brand equivalent
Cereal
Canned chicken and tuna
Tuna and Chicken “Helpers”
Granola Bars, Peanut Butter Crackers
Pancake/Waffle Mix and Syrup
Canned fruit and vegetables
Peanut Butter and Jellly
If you prefer to do a monetary donation, we are pleased to receive it. Just write a check to
HUMC and put MUNCH in the memo field. Easy as that! Again, thanks for your generous sup-
port of MUNCH!
—Chip Davis, MUNCH Coordinator
Missions: Christmas in September?
It may seem like you have a jump on Christmas giving by shopping for youth
in Armenia with your AGAPE shoe box. Reminder the shoe boxes are due
Sunday, September 16th. They may be brought up to the altar to be blessed
before shipping. (If brought earlier please place in Room #4) Thank you for
your sharing the love of God through your gifts for others. Volunteer on Satur-
day, October 13th- join the fun by dedicating 2 hours of your day at the fall
festival. Check out the bulletin board outside of the restrooms for sign-ups.

Greetings from Queenie the Church Mouse!
It’s hot outside! Just how hot is it you ask? It is hot enough to burn
the soft pads right off this tiny mouses paws! I have been busy doing
inside jobs to keep cool and not worry about lathering in sunscreen. I am
lucky as my job as your Church Mouse is to keep the church tidy, free of delicious
crumbs and in order. I also help Pastor Skip prepare his sermons and keep loose
paperclips from falling into his keyboard.
As I was cleaning this week, I overheard two people talking about the list of
ways to serve the church and how they were too old, their eyesight was flawed, there
minds were slow and nobody would want them on a committee. They saw
themselves as “flawed” not capable of serving. I wanted so much to jump up and
down and tell them that there’s a job for everybody. And what they may see as a flaw
that keeps them from doing a job might not be a flaw at all, but a gift from God that
makes them special and useful to His Service. If you know someone like this, I ask
you to have them read the story of “The Cracked Pot.” This story will remind them
that all of us are cracked pots and flaws are only ways God reminds us that He needs
us to serve Him. It’s a good story, as it reminds us that what we see as flaws that keep
us from doing a particular job, may be a blessing as we discover the job God has for us
to do is done better because of our flaws.
“THE STORY OF THE CRACKED POT”
A water bearer in India had two large pots, one hung on each end of a pole, which he carried
across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it. While the other pot was perfect, and always
delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the mistress's
house, the cracked pot arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the
bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to her master's house.
The perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was
made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was

Queenie Continued...
able to return with half a pot of water as the rest spilled out along the way no matter how hard
it tried. After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer
one day by the stream: "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."
Why?" asked the bearer. "What Are You Ashamed of?"
"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this
crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your mistress's house. Because of
my flaws, you must do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot
said.
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion, he said, "As
we return to the mistress's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."
Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beauti-
ful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it
still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for
its failure.
The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on your side of
the path, but not on the other pot's side? “That's because I have always known about your
flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day
while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. “For two years I have been able to
pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my mistress's table. Without you being just the way,
you are, she would not have this beauty to grace her house."
We could say, the cracked pot was part of the Flower Ministry Team, growing
and putting beautiful flowers on the altar each Sunday and delivering flowers to
those in hospitals and at home recovering. The cracked pot did not carry a full pot of
water across dry land but watered the flowers giving beauty along the way.
It surely comes to us as we hear this story, that each of us has our own unique
flaws. We're all cracked pots!! But, if we allow the Lord to use us, in spite of our
flaws, to grace His Father's table in some way, we will experience joy and happiness.
So, as God calls you to the job He has appointed for you, don't be afraid of your
flaws. Acknowledge them, and allow Him to use them, so you too can help add
beauty along the pathway He has chosen for you. May God bless each and everyone
of you “Cracked Pots” until next time... Queenie
