Image Title: Resilience and Vulnerability

Resilience signifies as a social order of adaptation despite all adversity. This led to a search for many factors on what resilience means for the individual, family and the community in indigenous perspectives.

This image demonstrates the juxtaposition of resilience and vulnerability of oral tradition. It encapsulates a moment where the passing of knowledge through basket weaving acts as a resource of resilience for the younger generation to maintain traditional culture and practices. While ongoing concerns of the vulnerability of oral tradition persistently rely on Elder’s capability to pass on the knowledge before the full richness of it diminishes. Welcome to the 2018 Division Research Day

The Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment (ITEE) has a vibrant and exciting research culture which has generated an excellent reputation for research and development across a wide range of disciplines. With a constant commitment to the provision of a high quality learning and research environment for our academic and student community, the Division continues to collaborate with industry and the community through innovative research that delivers real-world impact. The Division has been recognised as a world-leader in teaching and research for which it has received numerous accolades. We are the only university in Australia to have all of its assessed Engineering research rated well above world class (i.e. ranked 5 out of 5) in both the 2-digit and 4-digit FOR codes according to Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) 2015. We are very proud of the Division’s achievements to date and look forward to great future collaborations and partnerships moving into the future.

Today we have an opportunity to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the extent of the research activity occurring in our Division. We hope that you will find today’s event highly stimulating and an important window into our research vision of “Inspired Partnered Excellence” as we move towards 2020.

The day’s program will include:

• University research themes and directions presented by Professor Tanya Monro, Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Innovation.

• A keynote speech delivered by Dr Kristin Alford, Director MOD.

• “Fast and Furious” research presentations by Researchers from across the Division and Future Industries Institute, showcasing the breadth of our research activity.

• Divisional Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. Support our Higher Degree by Research students compete for a chance to represent UniSA at the Asia-Pacific 3MT® Final, communicating their research using 1 slide, and non-technical language in 3 minutes. This is always an enjoyable session and it takes a great deal of skill and passion to portray the intentions and outcomes of at least 3 years work in 3 minutes!

• University’s industry engagement strategy presented by Professor Andy Koronios, Dean: Industry and Enterprise.

3

• You are encouraged to visit the poster display area during the session breaks to view additional research work being undertaken in the division and presenters will be on hand to talk further about their projects. There is also an opportunity to vote for your favourite poster in the People’s Choice competition.

• Dr Laura-Anne Bull (Acting PVC: ITEE) will provide closing remarks for the event.

• There will also be plenty of networking opportunities for academics, industry partners and research students.
