Region 9 and sales of this Omnibus support the following:

♦ Adult Educational fund to help GMO’s finance events geared toward adults.

♦ Youth Educational fund to help GMO’s finance events geared toward youth.

♦ FEI Jr/YR funds, to offset expenses for attending NAJYRC.

♦ A travel fund for smaller GMOs to help send one of their board members to the regional summer meeting, and/or the USDF National Convention.

♦ Continuing educational programs for USEF licensed judges and USDF “L” grads. Attendance is open to all regional members, not just judges.

♦ Funds to help Region 9 PM delegates attend the USDF National Convention

♦ Funds to help the volunteer regional board, and committee chairs attend the regional summer meeting and the USDF National Convention.

♦ Funds to finance the regional website.

♦ Funds to purchase the Region 9 Bench, located in the courtyard at the USDF National Educational Center in Lexington, KY.

For many young riders, the NAJYRC offers the opportunity of a lifetime:

to compete in an international event. Competition is stiff—only the top

four riders from each region are invited to compete on teams in the

championship. For some riders it is a stepping stone toward an equestrian

career while for others it serves as the peak of their riding careers.

Donations and sponsorship are critically important to help our region

develop a successful team and to offset the costs of competition fees,

travel, training and education. Donations are appreciated. For more infor-

The United States Dressage Federation (USDF) has

interpreted the dressage training scale in the pyramid shown

above. It illustrates the sequential manner in which training

should progress, with rhythm and energy at the base of the

pyramid and collection at its peak.

Despite its appearance, the training scale is not meant to

be rigid or linear. Instead, each level is built on, returned to,

and improved as the horse progresses. For example, the

work of an upper level horse involves as much refining of the

relaxation and connection stages of the pyramid as perfecting

collection.

USDF Rider Tests

Collective Marks for All Levels (All have a coefficient of 2) Rider’s Position The rider’s ear, shoulder, hip and heel are aligned vertically when sitting at all gaits. When seen from in front or behind the rider is straight and symmetrical with even shoulders, hips and stirrups. The rider sits in harmony with the mechanics of each gait Rider’s Correct and Effective Use of the Aids The rider prepares for and performs the movements and transitions using subtle, tactful and effective aids. The horse is appropriately bent through the turns and on circles and is straight when moving on straight lines. The horse responds promptly and willingly to the rider’s aids giving the impression of clear communication between rider and horse. Horse’s Response and Performance The horse’s training appears to be following the principles established by the Pyramid of Training. The horse moves actively forward with a consistent tempo in each gait and is reliably on the bit at all times. The transitions are performed willingly, maintaining an uphill balance. The stride and frame are lengthened and shortened while maintaining the activity and consistent tempo. Rider demonstrates horse’s clear reactivity to both lateral and longi-tudinal aid influence. Accuracy of the Exercises The geometry of the movements is correct in terms of their size, shape and placement in the arena. The circles, half circles and serpentine loops are round, have the correct diameter and they originate and terminate at the letter. Shoulder-in and travers are performed with an appropriate angle and bend. The corners are performed as one quarter of a 10 meter circle. Harmony between Rider and Horse Both horse and rider appear calm, focused and confident. They perform competently at the level and are pleasant to watch. Training Level Purpose: To confirm that the rider sits in the correct posture and alignment and shows correct mechanics in walk, rising trot and canter. The seat is sufficiently independent for the rider to maintain a steady, elastic rein contact and encourage the horse to stretch into that contact. The horse is ridden actively forward showing impulsion and bal-ance required for the level, bends equally to the left and right sides on turns and circles, and makes smooth, willing transitions. Note: All trot work to be ridden rising except for a few steps (4-8) of sitting trot during transitions. Transitions to halt may be performed through the walk. First Level Purpose: To confirm that the rider, in addition to the requirements of training level, shows correct alignment, posture and mechanics in sitting trot, including maintaining a steady, elastic rein contact. In turns on forehand and leg yields the rider remains centered and the horse responds willingly to the aids. The transitions are ridden in a better balance and with more throughness than at training level. In response to the correct application of the rider’s aids, the horse moves actively forward showing a consistent tempo and correct rhythm in each gait, shows appro-priate bending, lengthens and shortens the stride in trot and responds willingly to both longitudinal and lateral aids Note: All trot work to be ridden rising, unless stated. 2nd Level Purpose: To confirm that the rider, having achieved the requirements of first level, is able to ride the horse reliably on the bit with an uphill tendency. The rider lengthens and shortens the horse’s stride in trot and canter while maintaining correct alignment, posture and mechanics. In lateral movements the rider stays centered and demon-strates an appropriate angle and bending of the horse. As a result of the correct application of the rider’s aids, the horse shows a greater degree of straightness, bending, suppleness, throughness, balance and self-carriage than at first level. f Note: All trot work to be ridden sitting.

USDF Introductory Level Tests

This unique series of tests provides an opportunity for the horse and/or rider new to dressage to demonstrate elementary skills. The tests have been designed to encourage correct performance and to prepare the horse for the transition to the USEF tests. PURPOSE: To introduce the rider and/or horse to the sport of dressage. To show understanding of riding the horse forward with a steady tempo into an elastic contact with independent, steady hands and a correctly balanced seat. To show proper geometry of figures in the arena with correct bend (corners and circles). INSTRUCTION: • All trot work to be ridden rising. Transitions from walk to trot and trot to walk may be performed through sitting trot with the objective of performing a smooth transition. • Turns from center line to long side and long side to center line should be ridden as a half circle, touching the track at a point midway between the center line and the corner, and vice versa. COMMENT: • Horses should be ridden on a light but steady contact, with the exception of the free walk in which the horse is allowed complete freedom to stretch neck forward and downward. USEF Second Level Tests

PURPOSE: To confirm that the horse demonstrates correct basics, and having achieved the thrust required in First Level, now accepts more weight on the hindquarters (collection); moves with an uphill tendency, especially in the medium gaits; and is reliably on the bit. A greater degree of straightness, bending, suppleness, throughness, balance and self-carriage is required than at First Level. (Halts must be immobile for minimum of 3 seconds)

PURPOSE: To confirm that the horse demonstrates correct basics, and having begun to develop an uphill balance at Second Level, now demonstrates increased en-gagement, especially in the extended gaits. USDF Freestyle Tests

REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS All compulsory elements must be incorporated into the freestyle program. These are listed on the score sheet under technical execution. Of these, some must be demonstrated on both hands (in both directions). These are so indicated on the score sheet by a dotted line in the column labeled “Preliminary Notes.” The divided space allows judges to score compulsory elements to the left and right. Reins in one hand are allowed. A freestyle may include all elements EXCEPT dressage movements found in tests above the level of that entered or declared. Figures, pat-terns, combination, or transitions composed of elements permitted in the declared level are permitted. Lateral movements must cover a minimum distance of 12 me-ters. SCORING AND JUDGING Two (2) sets of marks are given—one for technical execution and one for artistic impression. Each set of marks is totaled separately, and then those totals are add-ed together and converted to the final percentage score. In the case of two or more judges, scores will be averaged and these averages will comprise the competitor’s final score. Technical Execution The beginning and end of the freestyle must be executed facing C and marked with a halt and salute. Preliminary notes will be given for each execution, in each direc-tion, of each of the compulsory elements. For compulsory elements that must be shown on both hands, “Preliminary Notes” will be given for each hand separately, but all will be considered for the Judge’s Mark. If a required element that need not be shown on both hands is not performed, it will receive a score of zero (0) under “Final Score.” If a required element that must be shown on both hands is not shown at all, it will receive a score of zero (0) under “Final Score.” If a required element that must be shown on both hands is shown on only one hand, it will re-ceive a zero (0) in one of the columns under “Preliminary Notes” (L or R as appro-priate). All marks for the other hand will be considered in the score for that hand. The right and left hand scores will both determine the Judge’s Mark. In addition, omission of a required element or direction may affect the artistic impression. In scoring technical execution, Judge’s Mark must be given in half-points or full points (no tenths). Movements “above the level” (found ONLY in a higher level test) re-ceive a deduction of four points from the total for technical execution for each illegal movement, but not for each recurrence of the same movement. Artistic Impression: In scoring artistic impression, Judge’s Marks may be given in tenths (.1) incre-ments.
