What is real? How can you really take complex emerging technologies and make them actionable? We won’t get all the answers but we suspect that smart business leaders will begin to put the pieces together and build strategies for success. Our predictions represent a subsection of all of the complex issues facing organizations in the coming year. We focus on five key issues: the emergence of the private cloud, refocus on high performance computing to support AI, the emergence of augmented intelligence, multi-cloud growth, storage management and security. We expect that 2018 will be an exciting year (hopefully not too exciting) and look forward to engaging with you. Below are our team’s predictions. We would love to hear your feedback – whether you agree or disagree with our predictions. We wish you a healthy, happy and prosperous new year. ways The private cloud is a way of architecting thedata center so that some data and workloads canoperate within the firewall The private cloudarchitecture will be standards based and will leverageservices such as microservices and containers and well-defined APIs

A new generation of hardware is being

architected to support emerging ArtificialIntelligence workloads General-purpose hardwarewill still have its place but the innovation will befocused on developing hardware that is designed to themost complex and compute-intensive workloads

Cloud infrastructure services are increasinglymaturing so that the battle among cloudproviders will be around the ability to providehybrid cloud management data managementsecurity compliance and service levelagreements Up until now cloud vendors havedifferentiated themselves based on price and speed Inorder to survive cloud suppliers will have to move to ahigher level of service and manageability based onenterprise requirements

Dans (ddkirsch) Predictions

Every application will embed machine learning --even if they donrsquot We have seen an increasingnumber of vendors claim that their solutionsincorporate machine learning While there aredefinitely innovative applications that are becomingsmarter and more powerful many claims of ML and AIare simply not true Many applications are in factadding rules rather than intelligence Rule-basedsystems must be pre-programmed and cannot adapt asbusiness and customers change without manualintervention Conversely applications based onmachine learning will adapt as circumstances (anddata) change

Businesses will face reputational challenges whenthe public finds out the types of data thatare being used in unethical machine learning andanalytic models These unethical models could includedata on race ethnicity or sexual orientation In mostcases this additional data will be included as a result of

overfitting rather than improving the actual model It isimportant for companies to remember that just becauseyou can do something doesnrsquot mean you should Tokeep your business out of the headlines businessleaders should understand what data is included inmodels especially when that data involves customerinformation

Artificial Intelligence (AI) may destroy some jobsbut new ones will be created The focus of AI rightnow is on improving and changing the way employeeswork AI technology will be embedded withinapplications to improve decision making Likewiseemployee intuition will improve the output frommachines The problem with humans is that we havebuilt-in biases For example in 2007 many thought thathousing prices could never go down Likewisemachines have their downside they donrsquot always havethe context and broader framework in the decisionmaking process Moving forward AI systems will offersuggestions to humans but the human will be theultimate decision maker

Jeans (jbozman) Predictions

The drumbeat around Multi-Cloud will get louderin 2018 We expect to see a wave of multi-cloudannouncements in 2018 Drivers for multi-cloudinteroperability include customer demand to accessdata across clouds the increasing maturity of cloudsoftware the emergence of application programminginterfaces (APIs) to connect clouds ndash and the continuedmigration of enterprise applications into private publicand hybrid clouds Wersquore seeing more systems vendorsand cloud providers working together to offer softwaregateways that will allow multiple clouds to share datamore easily As customersrsquo links to Cloud ServiceProviders (CSPs) get stronger we expect to see morevendors announce their support for cloud-interoperability testing services

Edge Computing will become a new ldquohubrdquo fordata analytics in 2018 We will see much moreattention paid to computing at the ldquoedgerdquo of thenetwork far from centralized data centers in 2018 Infact the ldquoedgerdquo will become an extension of businessesrsquooverall cloud environment that is necessary to supporta sensor-based IoT world City infrastructure (egstreets and traffic flow) retail stores oil-rigs factoriesfarms and sports stadiums ndash are all generating rapidgrowth for remote data which must be filtered andanalyzed to find actionable data for the business Edgecomputing becomes a necessity for analyzing this dataat the point of origin because of cost ndash and latencyassociated with data transmission Once data has beenanalyzed at the edge it can be efficiently shipped to acentral location to inform business planning

In 2018 we will see the emergence of morecapable storage management tools that candiscover monitor and protect storage resourcesacross on-premises storage devices and cloudstorage services To be truly useful storagemanagement tools must be pervasive powerful andsecure They must be capable of migrating data fromplace to place as needed to improve operationalefficiency Adding automation and AIML software tothe process will help to address the complexities ofhands-on-only storage management seen by IT staffersworking in hybrid cloud environments

Speed of light cripples IoT security For real-timeIoT systems (eg automotive industrialtransportation etc) latency can cause a dramaticincrease in the potential for security breaches Onesolution that is emerging is to move compute resourcesphysically closer to the edge devices that require real-time collaboration response and security updates

Biometrics Hurt Security Biometrics (finger faceeye identification techniques) that can supersedepasswords offer a potential solution to securityvulnerabilities However the reliance on a singleauthentication factor (ie finger face password orPIN)) can lead to serious hacking or coercion Despitepressure for convenient password replacements smartsecurity professional will continue requiring passwordsand Pins for multi-factor authentication along withbiometrics based on risk scores derived from contextualanalysis
