Commodore’s Comments

(continued)

Outside the club, some of our members, I know, are planning to check out the May 25 grand opening of the Sweetwater Landings Marina Drive-In Boatwash which will officially open on Friday, May 25th, at 6PM. The marina is scheduled to demonstrate its equipment and serve drinks and food dockside. With the year flying by, it’s time to have a nominating committee in place to work on getting next year’s bridge members in place and we do. The committee members are Gerri Kahn (Commodore’s appointee) with Ron Kunkel and Will Sirois as board appointees. It’s great that the club has members willing to step forward and serve as needed - many thank to all of our members for the work they do for the club. Happy Boating!

Vice Commodore’s Docket

Dennis Weeks [email protected] 321-287-5076

Our May meeting was hosted by Ruth, Ron and myself, where everyone enjoyed a fond sendoff to our snowbird friends. At this meeting Fred Hecklau brought in another guest speaker for us; Geoff Campbell from HONC Marine. The presentation and dis-cussion were on a topic we all could relate to, seawalls. Everyone enjoyed the presen-tation, his insights and Geoff answered nu-merous questions! Thank you, Fred, for an-other sensational speaker!

Our next meeting theme is “Memorial Day Picnic” so please bring Memorial Day picnic food to share with the group. Also, I’ve been told to dress as if you were going to a Memorial Day pic-nic. The hosts for this event are Ginny and Dottie. Thank you, Ginny and Dottie!

Looking ahead, our June meeting is pizza night hosted again this year by Luc and Betty. As I remember, last years pizza night was a great event! I strongly suggest you let Luc and Betty know if you’ll be coming so they can order an appropriate amount of pizza (cheese or peppero-ni). The cost for the pizza dinner is $6 per person and well worth it!

For those of you who are disgruntled that you missed an opportunity to help host a meeting, hang on – there are still upcoming meetings that need your help. In particular; July - EZ snacks, September – chocolate extravaganza, October – spooky snacks and the November Thanksgiving Feast. Please help as you can so the burden is not on a few! Thank you!

I have to make a retraction to something I reported in the Mainsheet last month. I’m afraid I reported FAKE NEWS! Yes, I was incorrect in reporting the results of the high stakes bocce match. The correct, undefeated winning team (according to a reliable source) included: Ruth Lasiewski, Will Sirois, Carmen Rusu and Dan Csach. Obviously, I was caught up in the adren-alin of the moment and did not get the facts correct.

Report From The Rear Commodore

Dan Csach [email protected] 419-271-6543

Greetings from your Rear Commodore with a little history of our home town. Cape Coral history began in 1957 when two brothers from Baltimore, Maryland, Leonard and Jack Rosen, flew over the peninsula known as Redfish Point, across the Caloosahatchee River near present-day Fort Myers. Cape Coral was founded as Redfish Point. The brothers, who were real-estate developers, purchased a 103-square-mile tract known as Redfish Point for $678,000 in that year and, in 1958, began development of the city as a master-planned, pre-planned community. The Gulf American Land Corporation (GALC), was formed to develop the area. Canals were dug, streets paved, houses and businesses built. Cape Coral was promoted like no other Florida development. Celebrities were brought in to tout the benefits of "the Cape", as it is known locally. The first building in Cape Coral, even before any houses were con-structed, was the Rosen's sales office. It was built right on the spot where George's Auto now stands, at Cape Coral and Coronado Parkways. Cape Coral's first four homes were completed in May 1958, on Riverside and Flamingo Drives. The city has over 400 miles (640 km) of canals, more than any other city in the world. Most of the canals are navigable and some have access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Cruising News with Captain Carmen

Carmen Rusu [email protected] 408-203-0832

May, what great weather this year for sailing or spending time outdoors! With temperature in the 60s at night, good winds and no rain, it was perfect weather for sailing. It is too bad that the day cruise at St. James City did not happen, though a few of our sailors have requested that we re-schedule. We will be talking about it at our next general meeting. Looking at the calendar, Flag Day, June 14th, seems like a good day for a rematch. Speaking of a rematch, Captains Fred and Dottie decided to spend a few days at Tween Waters af-ter our March club cruise was cancelled due to weather. They enjoyed three lovely days and nights at the marina, taking in the resort amenities and beautiful sunsets. They were joined by two additional boats and six club members (Poindexters, Daughertys and Cabots) for lunch at The Green Flash on Captiva Island during their stay.

This is the month when we are saying farewell to all our friends heading North for the summer; to all of you, we’ll miss you, and wish you happy times wherever you’ll go! Starting June, a little cruiser’s summer break is expected when heat and humidity make it hard to spend nights on the boat. But for those of us who are braving the heat, we can always get together for a “day cruise.” In July we have a raft-up scheduled for July 4th. This was a big affair and an annual cruise for the club, but the last few years the hot summer weather was not too inviting. Maybe this year we’ll try to resume this great way to spend our national holiday and, if we can brave the heat, watch the fireworks from Glover Bight. Our long distance cruisers on Small Fortune and Sea Hunt are back, and we are looking forward to hearing their salty tales. The Great Escape is still getting ready for some adventure, with a dream for the Florida Keys, or if the wind is adverse maybe heading North instead!

Cruising Update from Captains Gerri & Arnold: It's now a month since our last report. We're back home having had quite an adventure. To pick up where we left off in the last Mainsheet, we spent a few days enjoying St Augustine and then on to Jacksonville. We waited out yet another front with huge amounts of rain and high winds and then proceeded south on the St Johns River. Our stops included Palatka, We-laka, and Hontoon Island State Park. The scenery was lovely but the river towns seemed pret-ty sad. After a few days in Sanford we started back. On the way we found several peaceful anchorages and then stopped in Ft Pierce for a couple of days. On a boat trip several years ago we'd found a restaurant in Ft Pierce that we really liked and it was still there but, proba-bly not surprisingly, not as good as we remembered. We next anchored in a wide spot in the canal between the Port Mayaka railroad bridge and the Port Mayaka Lock. Our final night we stopped at Franklin Lock. With some 1000+ miles under the keel we're happy we went and we're also happy to be home.

Cruising News with Captain Carmen

(continued)

Cruising News from Captains Luc and Betty:

Luc and Betty Carriere departed on April 21 for a

two week cruise north on Sea Hunt. Their first stop

was Useppa and the following day they entered the

Gulf at the Boca Grande Pass Inlet and cruised di-

rectly to Venice where they stayed at the Crows Nest

Marina. They celebrated their second night out at the

marina's restaurant overlooking their Sea Hunt.

The next day they entered the Gulf and sailed/motored north to the Longboat Key Inlet, where they followed the in-tercostal (ICW) to the Manatee River and anchored at Point DeSoto. The next day, day sailed under the Sunshine Bridge, into Tampa Bay and to the St. Pete Marina. Spent two days in St. Pete enjoying museums, dining out and shop-ping. The cruise continued around the south point of St Pe-te/Clearwater and followed the ICW up to the Dunedin Mu-nicipal Marina, where they spent three lovely days. Dunedin is a wonderful community with shops, restaurants and brew-eries abound. Used the trolley to visit Clearwater and Tarpon Springs. With weather threatening 20+ knot winds out of the east, they decided to start south and cross the entrance to Tampa Bay before it got rough. Their first leg took them from Dune-din to Marina Jacks in Sarasota where they took a mooring and experienced a great sunset.

The rest of the trip south was pleasant enjoying the peacefulness of the ICW and the beautiful homes and wildlife along it's shores. Got back to the Cape with-out incident until they hit ground near Rum Runners at high tide. Overall a great cruise and look forward to cruising north again, but next time with fellow club members.
