Self Studies Programme
‘Developing World Leaders’ is the tagline that
drives Abedeen Academy’s Orientation.
Before we look into one of our Orientations,
let’s look at the word leader. What makes a
good leader? Who is a good leader? A leader
of someone or something is a person who has
the ability to lead him or herself. It’s a person
who is able to lead their own decision,
emotion, and progression among other things.
A person who is able to lead their own self will
in turn be able to lead others.
‘Developing World Leaders’ is the tagline that
has inspired the school’s Self Studies
programme. This programme allows students
to take charge of their own learning and
progress. The self studies programme allows
students time to self reflect and do their own
studying based on the topics/subjects they
need to learn. In this day and age where
knowledge is easily acquired, students no
longer need a teacher standing in front talking
for 40 minutes about something they may
already know. Instead, students want to
experience learning beyond their textbooks.
Therefore in class, an Abedeen educator
would share the foundation of the topic.
During the self studies periods, students pick
up their textbooks and workbooks and do
their own learning. This process can happen
individually or in a group. When a topic or
subtopic becomes unclear, students will then
seek help from the subject matter experts.
The practice of seeking the knowledge is one
step to developing students into becoming a
leader of their self, and in time a world leader,
InsyaAllah.
In a typical learning environment, students
wait to receive information and knowledge
from the teacher. And they are forced to
move according to the teacher’s pace
regardless of whether or not they have
become proficient in that topic. Abedeen
Academy’s Orientation number 5 on the other
hand states that students are given the
opportunity to achieve proficiency in their
academic subject at their own pace without
competing with other. This is achieved
through the Self Studies Programme because
it is during this time students who can move
forward in the topic are allowed to keep
progressing while students who need
assistance seek and receive help from subject
matter experts. With the Self Studies
Programme, Abedeen educators are able to

identify students who show weakness in
certain topics. When this is identified, the Self
Studies Programme allows these students to
relearn topics from a different level in order
to be able to advance.
This programme encourages students to seek
knowledge from books, online resources,
teachers and even other friends. Through the
Self Studies programme, student are required
to be in pursuit of knowledge instead of
waiting for the knowledge to be given, in
other words, served and spoon fed from a
silver platter.
As adults, we seek knowledge to survive. Let’s
train and encourage our children to see
knowledge because is it a responsibility. And
together we will watch them develop into a
learned world leader.

"If anyone travels on a road in search of
knowledge, God will cause him to travel on
one of the roads of Paradise. The angels will
lower their wings in their great pleasure with
one who seeks knowledge. The inhabitants of
the heavens and the Earth and (even) the fish
in the deep waters will ask forgiveness for the
learned man. The superiority of the learned
over the devout is like that of the moon, on
the night when it is full, over the rest of the
stars. The learned are the heirs of the
Prophets, and the Prophets leave (no
monetary inheritance), they leave only
knowledge, and he who takes it takes an
abundant portion.”- Sunan of Abu-Dawood,
Hadith 1631.
Process of Learning
The quote ‘learning is a lifelong process’ is
commonly heard and used. The word lifelong
is key in this quote. It means learning for the
rest of our life. As such, learning should not be
restricted to a certain syllabus or curriculum.
Abedeen Academy puts emphasis on students
learning the topics they need to according to
the student’s level. Teachers share the
foundation of the topic, and further mentor
students to solve problems and think critically
in acquiring the information. Textbooks and
Coursebooks serve as student’s point of
reference while the Activity Books and
Workbooks serve as practice and revision for
the students. Students are further drilled with
questions from multiple resources including
past examinations and questions from other
schools.
Once the knowledge is gained, students
sitting for major examinations will be
scheduled for extra classes in the afternoons,
over the weekend and during school holidays.
All the knowledge obtained is structured to
meet the requirements of the examination.
Tutorial
The Self Studies programme is the time for
students to complete their Self Studies
Journal, assignments, projects, presentations
and homework. Completing these works at
school gives students access to multiple
resources. The self studies periods are
conducted
in a tutorial
format
where it is
governed
and
monitored
by subject

experts.

2018 NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER
2019 IGCSE – May Series Intensive Class
Alhamdulillah, the drill and practice intensive
class has started earlier in the month of
November and will continue running until the
IGCSE examination in May of 2019. Some
classes will start taking place on Saturdays.
The Saturday class schedule will be updated
by the Head of Secondary section in the near
future.
School visit by parents
Parents/guardian who would like to see your
child or any teacher during schooling hours
will need to report to the Office. A visitor’s
pass will be given by a member of the
administrative team to allow
parents/guardian into the school premises.
The visitor’s pass must be visible at all times.
Without the visitor’s pass, parents will only be
allowed to enter up to the drop off point.
Parents are also not permitted to wander
around the school premises unnecessarily
while school is in session in order to allow
your child to focus on their studies and
activities. We highly appreciate your
cooperation in adhering to this policy
whenever you are at school.
Avoid paying your child a visit during break
time. Give your child the chance to learn to
socialise with their friends and to be
independent. Should they forget to bring
something; stationery, uniform, water, refrain
from rushing to school to pass these items to
your child. Allow them to experience the
inconvenience and learn from the mistake as
to not repeat in the future. However, if the
item needs to be delivered to your child,
kindly drop the item to an administrative
team member and the item will be delivered
to the student.

Know an Abedeen Educator
NUR SHAFIQA FITRI KAMSANI
Mrs Shafiqa is the Physics and Science
Teacher who joined Abedeen on 7th May
2018. Let’s read what she has to share:
“I am the Science and Physics teacher in
Abedeen. Students call me Teacher Shafiqa,
and my background is mainly related to
Physics and Astronomy.
I always feel proud and happy to teach my
students. This is my responsibility of serving
the nation, as I believe educated citizens build
a great nation. Of course there are days that I
face challenges and difficulties. However, with
the help of other senior teachers in Abedeen,
I learned how to solve the issues and then
practice the same thing to the new Abedeen
family members here. I am also feeling
blessed that I can play my part in building the
ummah by shaping the students to be great
future world leaders and equip them with
knowledge and skills.
I started off my career by being a sourcing
specialist in a recruitment firm. My tasks were
basically examining resumes and call and
interview potential candidates to fill in the
vacant positions for my American clients. My
previous job helped me so much in terms of
speaking skills, confidence level and
knowledge about customer service. In

2018 NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER
Abedeen, I teach Science and Physics. I find it
similar when I cater students’ needs and
clients’ needs. Whatever job or industry I’m
in, I have learned to give my very best as it is
my responsibility to do so.
As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the
most powerful weapon which you can use to
change the world.” To overcome poverty, to
prevent illness, to prepare a sustainable and
better planet for our future generation, we
need knowledge. In short, education is vital
for the betterment of individuals, community,
country and the whole world. To achieve this,
suitable methods are needed to run education
for success. I strongly believe education
should come together with ethics. School
system needs to develop and evaluate
students based on those two aspects. Ethics is
a part of Islamic way of life. Abedeen is a
school that develops both education and
ethics at the same time. This is clearly shown
in students’ timetable outline, where they
start the day at school by reciting al-Quran
and attending Islamic Studies class. Education
that goes together with ethics and religion
hand in hand, can secure students great
positions and better opportunities in this
world and the afterlife.
As Abedeen’s motto is ‘Developing World
Leaders’, my goals are to teach students with
Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) knowledge on
international level and to widen their views
about global issues. Students need to know
and be updated about technology
advancement in foreign countries. This can
spark curiosity and positive competition, and
then creates a generation of innovative
students. It is indeed a challenge as not many
students nowadays are interested in watching
or reading the news. To improve their level of
general knowledge, I would love to open a
section or bulletin board that gives updates
about global news or issues. All students are
responsible for the board and they have to
update the board frequently.
Our students are in a range of age that needs
guidance and help from time to time. There
are times when they make poor choices, make
mistakes and later regret them, and the cycle
continues in a loop. This is normal as exploring
things and learning from experience are their
nature. To improve the students, the school
and parents can help them by offering
guidance, information, knowledge, and
advices. The Parents-Teachers Association
(PTA) is also established to be a platform
where teachers and parents can
communicate, discuss and work together
towards providing a conducive environment
for students’ growth and development.
I always teach Science and Physics by relating
the subjects to daily life applications. Some
students find it hard to relate what they learn
at school with what they experience on daily
basis. For example, there are a few subjects
related to the action of buying food at a
restaurant. Counting money and checking the
change given by the cashier requires
mathematical skills, usage of plastics bags and
food containers remind students about the
impact of those objects to the environment,
the design of food containers considers the
centre of mass of food which is closely related
to Physics, and by observing the restaurant,
students can relate to its cost of operation
and raw goods, also service charge and tax,
which is taught in Economics, hence making
sense to the price of food. By giving a picture
of how knowledge is important for them to
survive, my students will set goals and target
to excel in learning so they can create a better
future for themselves.
It is undeniable that being both a mother and
a teacher is tiring. To tackle that problem, I
always try to manage my time, food intake
and energy usage optimally. When my
timetable is packed, I take extra portion of
breakfast compared to the usual to keep me
going for the whole day. Whether my
timetable is normal or packed, I always take
breakfast, even if it’s only a slice of bread that
I can manage to grab. During my free time, I

would do small tasks and work to avoid
procrastination as I am aware that I could not
afford to stay up late at night to complete
them. By completing my work early, I can
have more time to rest, sleep and attend my
child’s needs. Sleeping early helps me to be
productive the next day. It also can avoid
unnecessary stress.
Choosing Abedeen as your child’s educational
platform is a great decision as this school
develops students in all aspects, especially
Islamic values and ethics. As the member of
the school’s frontline, I can assure you that
spending for education in Abedeen will be
your greatest investment in the world and the
afterlife. InshaAllah.”
