SUPERCHARGE YOUR JOURNEY:KAWASAKI’S SECOND SC CHALLENGE IS A SUPERCHARGED LIGHTWEIGHT SPORT TOURER

The supercharged Ninja H2 was created to offer riders something they had never experienced. But Kawasaki’s answer to the “ultimate” motorcycle was merely the opening act. Now, for their second supercharger challenge Kawasaki brings the unique sensory experience of a supercharged engine to the sport tourer category with the new Ninja H2 SX and Ninja H2 SX SE.

Where the Ninja H2 – and the sensational Ninja H2R upon which it is based – were born from a pure pursuit of performance, the new Ninja H2 SX was designed from the beginning for real-world applications. Its Balanced Supercharged Engine was developed for everyday street-riding situations, offering an output stronger than the H2 in the low-mid range combined with superb fuel efficiency. Its versatile engine character enables relaxed long-distance riding, easy manageability at slow speeds, and – when called upon – the exhilarating acceleration that only a supercharged engine can deliver.

Thanks to its light weight – in standard trim, the Ninja H2 SX weighs only 18 kg more than the Ninja H2 – the Ninja H2 SX has a power-to-weight ratio between that of the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX-14R. The formidable acceleration potential that results is coupled with a high level of touring comfort care of a relaxed, sporty riding position, superb ride comfort, a blend of reassuring high-speed stability and agile handling, a host of touring features, Electronic Cruise Control, and Kawasaki’s latest IMU-equipped electronics package. CONCEPT AND ADVANTAGES

The Ninja H2 SX features an innovative trellis frame like the Ninja H2, but to be able to accommodate a passenger and luggage, the frame needed to be completely redesigned. Its 195 kg payload is comparable to that of the Ninja 1000. And increased rigidity and a longer wheelbase deliver the stability for riding at highway speed with panniers, while a 30o steering angle facilitates low-speed manoeuvres.

New Trellis Frame: Tandem-, Pannier-Capable

Full-fairing bodywork contributes to both wind protection and the Ninja H2 SX’s sporty looks. The full fairing was possible thanks to the highly efficient engine, which gives off significantly less heat than that of the high-performance Ninja H2. The bodywork strategically shields the rider without being too large, balancing rider comfort and aerodynamics. On the SE model, a large windscreen further protects the rider from windblast, offering even greater touring comfort.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE

ENGINEBalanced Supercharged EngineWhile the base design starts with the supercharged engine of the Ninja H2, the numerous changes necessary to achieve the balance of power and fuel efficiency desired for the Ninja H2 SX essentially resulted in a new engine. The Balanced Supercharged Engine delivers both exhilarating acceleration and superb fuel efficiency (25% better than that of the Ninja H2). Key to achieving this was increasing the engine’s thermal efficiency, which was accomplished by significantly raising the compression ratio. Other changes – to the supercharger, combustion chamber, cams, and intake and exhaust systems – followed.

* Like on the Ninja H2, a sound hole in the intake duct makes it easier tohear the supercharger’s characteristic chirping.

* Air supplied to thesupercharger entersvia a single Ram Airintake in the left sideof the upper cowl. The total frontal areais approximately80% that of the NinjaH2, matching theairflow requirementsof the BalancedSuperchargedEngine. (Photo 1)

* Ram Air duct wasdesigned to takethe fresh air to thesupercharger in asstraight a line aspossible, contributingto the increasedsuperchargerefficiency. (Photo 2)

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE

A* The Ninja H2 SX features an originalimpeller, alsodesigned in-house.While its size is thesame, the shape andangle of the bladeswere optimised forthe 200 PS†, high-efficiency engine. The superchargersettings (rpm andairflow volume formaximum efficiency) were also optimised. (Illustration A)† The specifications mentioned here apply to and have been achieved by production models under

standard operating conditions. We intend only to give a fair description of the vehicle and its performance capabilities but these specifications may not apply to every machine supplied for sale.

* Impeller is formed from a forged aluminium block using a 5-axis CNCmachining centre to ensure high precision and high durability. The 69 mm impeller features 6 blades at the tip, expanding to 12 blades atthe base. Grooves etched into the blade surfaces help direct the airflow.

* The supercharger is driven by a planetary gear train, which runs off thecrankshaft. Designing the gear train using technology from Kawasaki’sAerospace Company resulted in a very compact unit, with minimalpower loss.

* Gear train increases the impeller speed to 9.2x the crank speed (1.15xstep gear x 8x planetary gear).

* Being constructed of highly rigid aluminium offers two advantages:1) aluminium offers excellent surface heat dissipation, helping tokeep the intake air cool; 2) the rigid structure helps to ensure airtightperformance with the supercharged air pressure (approximately 2 atm).

* Changing the intake chamber manufacturing process from a gravitycasting to die-cast saves 500 g in weight.

* As air enters the intake chamber, it passes through a newly addeddiffuser. This contributes to increased supercharger efficiency, which helps prevent engine knocking, as well as benefiting engineperformance and fuel efficiency.

* Intake funnel lengths were optimised for the low-mid performance andhigh fuel efficiency. The lengths are uneven: funnels 1-4 are shorterthan 2-3.

* The Ninja H2’s intake funnel nets are replaced with a single net atthe end of the diffuser. The net helps to smooth the airflow, while thesimplified design saves weight.

B* Intake chamberis ideally shapedfor high efficiencyand high engineoutput. Optimisedvolume (6 litres >>5 litres) and revisedchamber constructioncontributes to anoverall superchargerefficiency greater thanthat of the Ninja H2.(Illustration B)

C* Intake and exhaustports were revisedto suit the reducedairflow. Low-midperformance and fuelefficiency benefit.(Illustration C)

* Like the Ninja H2, a dummy head is used during the cylinder honingprocess. The more precise circularity and cylindricity that result allowthe use of low-tension piston rings, which helps reduce mechanicalloss.

* Significantly increased compression ratio (8.5:1 >> 11.2:1) enablesincreased thermal efficiency and greatly contributes to increased fuelefficiency. A smaller squish (now a mere 1 mm, compared to the 4 mmon the Ninja H2) contributes to improved combustion, which also helpsprevent engine knocking.

* A blow-off valve controlled by the ECU regulates pressure gain insidethe intake chamber. When the throttle is closed suddenly, the ECUreleases excess pressure from the chamber to prevent impeller surging.Valve operation response is better than that of the Ninja H2, enabling anoptimum boost pressure to be maintained while contributing to powerfeeling and throttle response.

* Electronic Throttle Valves enable the ECU to control the volume of boththe fuel (via fuel injectors) and the air (via throttle valves) delivered tothe engine. Ideal fuel injection and throttle valve position results insmooth, natural engine response and the ideal engine output. Thesystem also makes a significant contribution to reduced emissions.

* Smaller-diameter (ø50 mm >> ø40 mm) throttle valves optimisethe airflow rate, contributing to low-mid range torque and high fuelefficiency.

* A two-stage machining process for the cylinder head (race technologydeveloped for the Ninja ZX-10R) is used to form the throat of the intakeports. The valve seat area is bored twice: once along the same path asthe throat; then again for the valve seats. The result is smoother intakeairflow, which helps reduce intake loss, and translates to increasedperformance.

* Cam profiles with shorter intake (-8o) and exhaust (-12o) duration (andshorter overlap) match the reduced airflow requirements of everydaystreet riding, contributing to the low-mid range focused performance aswell as increased fuel efficiency.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ENGINE

* With the more efficient combustion, less heat is given off, allowing thepistons to be cooled by single piston jets (instead of the dual jets usedon the Ninja H2). As a result, the oil pump can turn at a slower rate, reducing friction loss and leading to increased performance and fuelefficiency, and the engine’s oil volume could be reduced (by 500 mL),contributing to 300 g in weight savings.

* Dual secondary balancers ensure extremely low engine vibration.Balancer position and weight were optimised to minimise unwantedsecondary vibration caused by the reciprocating pistons.

* Exhaust features smaller-diameter header pipes (ø45 mm >>ø42.8 mm) and a 360o header arrangement (1-4, 2-3) with connectorpipes, contributing to low-mid range torque and high fuel efficiency.

* Pre-chamber has a double-wall construction (triple-wall constructionon the Ninja H2), contributing to weight savings while keeping exhaustnoise to a minimum.

* The stylish silencer features a reverse-taper (thinner at the rear) designwith a die-cast end-cap.

* Catalysers relocated from the silencer to just aft of the collector pipe, where they can warm up more quickly. This promotes better emissioncontrol when the engine is still cold. As a result, retarding ignition canbe minimised and fuel efficiency is improved.

* Pistons feature revised crowns, contributing tothe increasedcompression ratio. The pistons arecast pieces – castpistons offer betterstrength than forgedpistons for the veryhigh temperaturesgenerated by thesupercharged engine. A unique casting process (similar to forging process) sees unnecessarymaterial removed and hollows created to achieve the ideal thickness. This enables a light weight on par with forged pistons, while ensuringthe strength necessary to cope with the increased cylinder pressure.(Illustration D)

* More compactsilencer (10 L >>7 L) with three internalchambers (two onthe Ninja H2) savesapproximately 2 kg.The lighter silencercontributes to masscentralisation, and byextension to improvedhandling. (Photo 3)

Dog-ring Transmission Hydraulic Assist & Slipper Clutch: Light Lever Operation

* Unlike a standard motorcycle transmission in which shift forks slidethe gears into position, with a dog-ring transmission the gears all stayin place. Only the dog rings move, sliding into position to engage thedesired gear.

* Input gears are fixed onto the input shaft, whereas the output gears spinfreely on needle bearings. Once engaged, the output gear (previouslyspinning freely) is then able to transfer power to the output shaft.

* Because the dog rings are much lighter than transmission gears, thistype of transmission offers a much lighter shift effort. Shift touch is alsoimproved, and a much shorter shift time is possible – which facilitatesquick acceleration.

* Longer primary gear contributes to the Balanced SuperchargedEngine’s superb fuel efficiency while helping to reduce the load of itseven greater torque on the transmission gears. 1st and 2nd gears arealso longer, contributing to easier engine manageability in everydayriding situations.

* Transmission oil jets (first used in a Kawasaki motorcycle on the 2015Ninja H2/H2R) enable a compact transmission with high durability.

* Assist & Slipper Clutch uses two types of cams: an assist cam and aslipper cam, offering two functions not available on a standard clutch.

* When the engine is driving the rear wheel the assist cam functions asa self-servo mechanism, pulling the clutch hub and operating platetogether to compress the clutch plates. This allows the total clutchspring load to be reduced, resulting in a lighter clutch lever pull whenoperating the clutch.

* When excessive engine braking occurs – as a result of quick downshifts(or an accidental downshift) – the slipper cam comes into play, forcingthe clutch hub and operating plate apart. This relieves pressure on theclutch plates to reduce back-torque and help prevent the rear tyre fromhopping and skidding.

* Aluminium clutch hub material provides a weight savings ofapproximately 1 kg compared to its steel counterpart.

Like the Ninja H2, the Ninja H2 SX features a dog-ring type transmission. The kind of transmission commonly found in MotoGP or Formula 1, it facilitates smooth, quick shifting. Gear ratios were optimised for a sport tourer.

A high-quality hydraulic clutch offers less maintenance, ensuring the initial touch condition can be maintained. And the lighter lever operation thanks to the clutch’s assist function contributes to reduced rider fatigue when street riding.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: CHASSIS

CHASSISTrellis FrameThe Ninja H2 SX features an innovative trellis frame like the Ninja H2, but to be able to accommodate a passenger and luggage, the frame needed to be completely redesigned. Its 195 kg payload is comparable to that of the Ninja 1000. And increased rigidity and a longer wheelbase deliver the stability for riding at highway speed with panniers, while a 30o steering angle facilitates low-speed manoeuvres.

* Using a trellis frame construction offered an elegant, lightweightsolution to meeting the performance requirements for the chassis. Itoffers a balance of stiffness and flexibility that enables a very high levelof stability while being able to handle external disturbances at highwayspeed.

* Kawasaki’s advanced dynamic rigidity analysis was used to ensureoptimum rigidity with light weight.

* Pipe diameter, thickness and bend of each piece of the trellis framewere carefully selected to obtain the necessary stiffness for that part ofthe frame. The trellis pieces are made primarily from high-tensile steel.

* Frame’s steering head was moved forward 15 mm, enabling a widersteering angle (27o >> 30o) that facilitates low-speed manoeuvres.

* Tilting the engine forward 2o helps keep the centre of gravity low, whichcontributes to overall handling as well as to stability at highway speed.

* Stronger, longer rear frame enables a 195 kg payload (vs 105 kg onthe Ninja H2) – more than enough to accommodate 2-up riding withluggage on the highway.

* Like the Ninja H2, the Ninja H2 SX features a Swingarm MountingPlate. This innovative chassis mechanism allows the engine to act aspart of the frame. Swingarm Mounting Plate bolts to the back of theengine. The swingarm pivot shaft goes through this plate, essentiallyallowing the swingarm to be mounted directly to the engine. Thanksto the Swingarm Mounting Plate, the frame does not need to use crossmembers for stability, contributing to the frame’s light weight.

4* Also like the NinjaH2, the Ninja H2 SXfeatures a single-sidedswingarm. Designedfor high rigidity andlight weight, theangular cross-sectionswingarm is composedof aluminium forgedand pressed parts. For the Ninja H2 SX,the swingarm waslengthened 15 mm,contributing to the longer wheelbase. (Photo 4)

* 25 mm longer than that of the Ninja H2, the 1,480 mm wheelbasecontributes to the stability necessary for riding at highway speed withpanniers.

* Weight savings efforts keep overall weight down to 256 kg for thestandard model (260 kg for the SE model). Weighing 13 kg less thanthe Ninja ZX-14R (or, only 18 kg more than the Ninja H2) gives the NinjaH2 SX a great advantage in acceleration performance and nimblehandling in the hills.

* KYB fully adjustable mono-shock rear suspension from the 2015-16Ninja H2 offers superb stability. The rear shock is gas-charged witha piggy-back reservoir, ensuring stable damping performance. Rearshock can be adjusted for compression damping (high/low-speed),rebound damping and preload. Shock settings also contribute to thebalance of ride comfort and sport performance.

* Top of the rear shock mounts to the Swingarm Mounting Plate. (Again,no need for frame cross-members.)

* The bottom of the rear shock is mounted via revised New Uni-Traklinkage that offers excellent feedback regarding the rear tyre’s gripcondition to the rider. The linkage is situated below the swingarm andalso mounts to the Swingarm Mounting Plate.

SuspensionSupersport-sourced suspension delivers a combination of ride comfort and sport performance ideal for street riding and touring. Both front and rear suspension are fully adjustable, allowing riders to make adjustments to suit riding style and conditions. And a remote rear preload adjuster greatly facilitates making changes to accommodate a passenger and/or luggage.

ELECTRONICS KCMF (Kawasaki Cornering Management Function): Total Engine & Chassis Management Package

* On the Ninja H2 SX, KCMF oversees the following systems:- KTRC (including traction and wheel lift control)- KLCM*- KIBS (including pitching and corner braking control)- Kawasaki Engine Brake Control

*SE-only feature

* IMU enables inertia along 6 DOF (degrees of freedom) to be monitored.Acceleration along longitudinal, transverse and vertical axes, plus rollrate and pitch rate are measured. The yaw rate is calculated by theECU using Kawasaki original software.

* Additional feedback from the IMU gives an even clearer real-time pictureof chassis orientation than the programming of the previous systemswas able to predict.

* In addition to more precise management, feedback from the IMUenables KIBS to incorporate an additional function. Corner brakingcontrol assists riders in tracing their intended line through the corner.

* Bosch’s latest IMU is highly compact and very lightweight, weighingonly 40 g.

The strength of Kawasaki’s cutting-edge electronics has always been the highly sophisticated programming that, using minimal hardware, gives the ECU an accurate real-time picture of what the chassis is doing. Kawasaki’s proprietary dynamic modelling program makes skilful use of the magic formula tyre model as it examines changes in multiple parameters, enabling it to take into account changing road and tyre conditions.

Using the latest evolution of this advanced modelling software and feedback from a compact Bosch IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), KCMF monitors engine and chassis parameters throughout the corner – from entry, through the apex, to corner exit – modulating brake force and engine power to facilitate smooth transition from acceleration to braking and back again, and to assist riders in tracing their intended line through the corner.

The use of Bosch’s compact IMU allows an additional layer of precision to be added to the already high-level KTRC, KLCM and KIBS base systems.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS

* Riders can choose from three modes. Mode 1 prioritises forwardacceleration. Mode 2 offers a balance between accelerationperformance and rider reassurance. Mode 3 provides rider reassuranceby facilitating smooth riding on slippery surfaces. Riders may also electto turn the system off.

* In Mode 1, highly sophisticated programming allows a degree of slip –a certain amount of slip is required to maximise acceleration. The idealslip ratio varies according to conditions. The system looks at a numberof parameters to get an accurate real-time picture of what is going on:front and rear wheel speed (slippage) and various engine, machine andrider input parameters are monitored.

* Because the sophisticated software bases its dynamic analysis on thechassis’ orientation relative to the track surface (rather than relative to ahorizontal plane), it is able to take into account corner camber, gradient, etc, and adapt accordingly.

Three modes cover a wide range of riding conditions, offering either enhanced sport riding performance or the peace of mind under certain conditions to negotiate slippery surfaces with confidence. Kawasaki’s advanced modelling software, complemented by feedback from the IMU, delivers precise control.

KTRC (Kawasaki Traction Control) * Using complex analysis, the system is able to predict when tractionconditions are about to become unfavourable. By acting beforeslippage exceeds the range for optimal traction, drops in power can beminimised, resulting in ultra-smooth operation.

* The system confirms conditions every 5 milliseconds and uses ignitioncut and airflow control (via the electronic throttle valves), enablingextremely quick reaction.

* In Modes 2 and 3 (each progressively more intrusive) the samelogic and control as in Mode 1 is employed during normal operation. However, when excessive rear wheel spin is detected, ignition timingis retarded and engine output is reduced to a level that allows therear wheel to regain grip. Fine control results in a very natural feeling:engagement is smooth, on/off transition is smooth, and stability ismaintained during extended operation.

* In Mode 3 (the most intrusive), KTRC effectively enables riders tonegotiate both short slippery patches (train tracks or manhole covers)and extended stretches of bad road (wet pavement, cobblestone, gravel) with confidence. Wheel spin is also limited when starting on aslippery surface.

* The system is also able to distinguish between wheel lift resultingfrom strong acceleration, which is smooth, and other types of wheellift. In Mode 1, assuming the rider’s intention to accelerate, the systemallows torque-induced wheel lift in so far as acceptable accelerationis maintained. Other wheel lift triggers system intervention. InMode 3, the system acts to supress all wheel lift, contributing to riderreassurance. In Mode 2, the level of intervention is between that ofMode 1 and Mode 3.

* With feedback from the IMU, wheel lift control can be extremely precise. In addition to smoother operation, the system limits wheel lift to a leveloptimised for street-use, taking into account the potential weight of apassenger and luggage.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: ELECTRONICS

* Standard equipment on the Ninja H2 SX SE, this system allows the riderto launch from a stop with the throttle held wide open.

* With the clutch lever pulled in and the system activated, engine speedis limited to 6,250 min-1 – even with the throttle held open.

* Once the clutch lever is released to engage the clutch, engine speedis allowed to increase, but power is regulated to prevent wheelspin andhelp keep the front wheel on the ground.

* The system disengages automatically at 150 km/h or when the ridershifts into 3rd gear.

* By default, KTRC is always ON when the engine is started. (The modewill be the same as when the engine was turned off, or in Mode 1 ifthe system had been turned off.) To ride with KTRC off, riders mustconsciously turn the system OFF (using the mode button on the left grip).

Designed to assist the rider by optimising acceleration from a stop, KLCM electronically controls engine output to prevent wheelspin and minimise wheel lift when launching. KLCM should only be used under closed-course conditions; do not use KLCM during everyday riding.

Kawasaki’s supersport-grade high-precision brake management system is standard equipment on the Ninja H2 SX. This is the same base system used on the Ninja H2 and Ninja ZX-10R, with programming and settings revised to suit the street performance parameters of the Ninja H2 SX.

KLCM (Kawasaki Launch Control Mode) (SE)

KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System)

* KIBS is a multi-sensing system, using the input from numerous sources. In addition to front and rear wheel speed sensors (standard for any ABSsystem), KIBS also monitors front caliper hydraulic pressure and variousinformation from the engine ECU (throttle position, engine speed, clutchactuation and gear position).

* High-precision brake pressure control enables the system to avoidreduced brake performance due to excessive pressure drops, allowslever feel to be maintained when KIBS is active, and ensures ABS pulsesfeel smooth (not heavy).

The Kawasaki Engine Brake Control system allows riders to select the amount of engine braking they prefer.

Kawasaki Engine Brake Control

Power Modes: Full, Middle and Low

* When the system is activated, the engine braking effect is reduced, providing less interference when sport riding.

* In addition to Full power mode, the Ninja H2 SX comes with twoadditional modes (Middle, Low), allowing riders to select power deliveryto suit preference and conditions.

Full Full power operationMiddle Limited operation (about 75% of full)Low Limited operation (about 50% of full)

* High-precision brake pressure control also offers a number of sport ridingbenefits:

1. Rear lift suppression2. Minimal kickback during operation3. Accounting for back-torque

* When braking from high speeds, the rear may lift as weight transfersforward. By monitoring front caliper hydraulic pressure, KIBS is able toregulate pressure increases, reducing the tendency of the rear to lift. Thishappens in two situations: 1) Before conditions require ABS intervention,KIBS prevents the pressure from increasing too quickly, thus suppressingrear lift, and 2) after ABS has decreased pressure to prevent wheel lock,KIBS pressure is not returned too quickly, preventing a sudden increasethat could induce rear lift. Suppressing this tendency contributes toenhanced braking stability.

* Precise control of front caliper pressure also enables KIBS to minimisekickback during operation. Pressure is increased in small amounts andslips are minimised, resulting in a very smooth operation feeling. This ofcourse translates to minimal distraction to the rider during sport riding.

* By accounting for back-torque, KIBS is able to offer increased rear brakecontrol during downshifts. KIBS parameters include throttle position, clutch actuation and gear position, allowing the system to recogniseengine back-torque from downshifting or getting off the gas at high rpm.Rear wheel slip due to engine braking often triggers ABS action onstandard systems, but by preventing unnecessary ABS intervention inthese situations, KIBS enables rear brake control to be maintained.

* With feedback from the IMU, KIBS is able to incorporate an additionalfunction: corner braking control. Should riders use the brakes beyondthe entrance to a turn (i.e. trail braking) or mid-corner (e.g. to avoid anobstacle), brake force is modulated to counter the tendency of the bike tostand up under braking. This assists riders in tracing their intended linethrough the corner instead of running wide.

KQS (Kawasaki Quick Shifter) (SE)* Complementing

the engine’s strongpower and the dog-ring transmission,a contactless-typequick shifter enablesquick upshiftsand downshiftsfor seamlessacceleration andquick and easydeceleration.(Photo 23)

23

* During acceleration, the system detects that the shift lever has beenactuated, and sends a signal to the ECU to cut ignition so that the dog-rings can smoothly engage the next gear without having to use the clutch.

* During deceleration, the KQS system automatically controls enginespeed, allowing you to downshift without operating the clutch.

* KQS does not function below 2,500 min-1.

* The system offers very high reliability, as it is less prone to breakingthan contact-type quick shifters.

* Operation of the Electronic Cruise Control is conveniently from the lefthandle. The system can be engaged with the touch of a button.

* Once the desired speed has been selected, engine output is adjustedautomatically via the Electronic Throttle Valves to maintain speed whenascending or descending grades are encountered. The set speed canbe adjusted using the “+” and “-” buttons.

* Operating the brake lever, clutch lever or rear brake pedal, or shiftinggears causes the Electronic Cruise Control to be disengaged. Closingthe throttle beyond the “zero-throttle” position is another instinctive wayto disengage the system. (The system also disengages automatically inthe event of large traction control intervention.)

Kawasaki’s latest cruise control system allows a desired speed to be maintained with the simple press of a button. Once activated, the rider does not have to constantly control the throttle. This reduces stress on the right hand when traveling long distances, enabling relaxed cruising and contributing to a high level of riding comfort.
