AHBA Kelpie Round-Up July 13/14/15, 2018 PackLeader Farm

JULY 13, 2018 – HRD Cattle - OPEN GENERAL RULES:

Time 20 minutes. In all elements, quiet efficient stock work is essential. Ties are broken based on individual scores in the following order: Exercise 6 “Move & Obstacle 2”, Exercise 7 “Re-pen”,

Time. STARTING SET- UP:

All gates are closed except the cross-fence gate between Field 1 and 2. 5 cows in the Holding Pen, 5 cows in the Take Pen, additional groups of cows in the pen area. The previous handler, with dog on leash, will release the cows from the Holding Pen when signaled by the judge. A stock handler will be standing by in the Holding Pen. There will be a water tank on course, located In Field 2 by the Round Pen gate.

1. GATHER – 15 pts: Time begins when handler sends the dog. Send dog to gather cows from the Set-Out and fetch through

Obstacle 1 to the handler. (NOTE: Handler from previous run will release the cows to the Set-Out). Exercise ends when the cows pass through the cross-fence gate. HRDI Dog is left half way to the stock, Handler may move within 15 feet of the cows HRDII Dog is left at the Handler’s Post, Handler may move halfway to cows HRDIII Team begins at the Handler’s Post

2. FETCH/DRIVE – 15 pts: Exercise begins when the cows pass through the cross-fence gate. Fetch/Drive cows counter-

clockwise around the kennels and pen in the Round Pen. Exercise ends when the cows are penned in the Round Pen. All cows must be penned. HRDI Handler may take any position. HRDII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock reach the HRDII Marker. HRDIII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock reach the HRDIII Marker.

3. TAKE PEN – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the cows are penned in the Round Pen. Move to the Take Pen, remove 5 cows

and release them into the Arena. Pass through the Take Pen and move a new group of 5 cows from a designated pen and load into the Take Pen. Exercise ends when the rear gate to the Take Pen is closed.

4. ALLEY & PENS – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the rear gate to the Take Pen is closed. Move to the Round Pen and

remove the cows, passing through the Small Pen and Rear Alley. Move cows into the Holding Pen. Exercise ends when the cows enter the Holding Pen. NOTE: Stock Handler will open/close Holding Pen gate as needed. HRDI/II Handler may take any position. HRDIII Handler remains in the Round Pen until cows enter the Holding Pen.

5. COLLECT & MOVE – HRDI/II: 15 pts, HRDIII: 25 pts: Exercise begins when the cows enter the Holding Pen. Recall the

dog. Collect the cows from the Arena and move them across Field 2. Exercise ends when all cows pass through the Cross-Fence gate.

5A. SHED – HRDIII ONLY: Move cows to vicinity of the barrel and perform a shed. 6. MOVE & OBSTACLE 2 – 15 pts: Exercise begins when all cows pass through the Cross-Fence gate. Move cows thru

Obstacle 2. Exercise ends when cows clear Obstacle 2. 7. RE-PEN – 10 pts: Exercise begins when cows clear Obstacle 2. Move cows to the Corner Pen and re-pen. Exercise/Time

ends when cows are penned.

JULY 13, 2018 – HRD sheep - OPEN GENERAL RULES:

Time 20 minutes. In all elements, quiet efficient stock work is essential. Ties are broken based on individual scores in the following order: Exercise 5 “Exhaust”, Exercise 6 “Load Trailer”, Time.

STARTING SET- UP:

All gates are closed except the GREEN gate of the Large Pen at the start of each run. 5 sheep at set-out, 5 sheep in the Trailer. There will be a water tank on course, located just outside the Large Pen.

1. GATHER – 20 pts: Exercise begins when the dog is sent. Gather the sheep and move them to the Handler’s Post. Exercise

ends when the sheep pass behind the Handler’s Post, counter-clockwise. HRDI Dog is left half way to the stock, Handler may move within 15 feet of sheep HRDII Dog is left at the Handler’s Post, Handler may move halfway to stock. HRDIII Team begins at the Handler’s Post

2. FETCH/DRIVE – 20 pts: Exercise ends when the sheep pass behind the Handler’s Post. Fetch/drive sheep through

Obstacle #1 and to the Marker. Once the sheep the reach the end of the drive, handler’s may move anywhere. Move the sheep counter-clockwise between the large tree/rocks and the Large Pen and pen the sheep through the GREEN gate. Exercise ends when Large Pen gate is closed. HRDI Handler may take any position. HRDII Handler remains behind the HRDII handler’s line until sheep clear Obstacle #1. HRDIII Handler remains at the handler post until sheep reach the Marker.

3. SORT/RIBBON – 10 pts (HRDIII ONLY): Exercise begins when Large Pen gate is briefly closed. Team will enter the Large

Pen and place a prepared marker (ribbon/collar) on 1 sheep. Exercise ends when the team exits the Large Pen and the gate is closed.

4. UNLOAD TRAILER – 20 pts: Exercise begins when Large Pen gate is closed. Remove sheep from trailer (4A). Move

sheep through Obstacle 2 (4B). Exercise ends when sheep pass through Obstacle 2. HRDI/II Utilizing the rear door, handler may remove the sheep from the Trailer or enter the Trailer to assist the dog

HRDIII Handler opens the back door. Dog will hold the sheep while the handler opens the side door. Dog will bring the sheep out the side door of the trailer. Side door must be closed and latched.

5. EXHAUST – 15 pts: Exercise begins when sheep pass through Obstacle 2. Move sheep to Pen 6 and re-pen. Exercise

ends when all sheep are penned in Pen 6. 6. LOAD TRAILER – 15 pts: Exercise begins when the SILVER gate to the large pen is opened. Move sheep over the Bridge

and load the trailer through the rear door. Exercise/Time ends when the trailer door is closed. Before leaving the field, the handler will ensure that the gates to the Large Pen are re-set: Green gate open, Silver gate closed.

July 13-15, 2018 – HTAD Course 5 – Ducks

GENERAL RULES: Time 10 minutes for HTAD I & II, 12 minutes for HTAD III. Ties are broken based on individual scores in the following order: Exercise 6 “Obstacle 3”, Exercise 3 “Hold”, Time.

1. TAKE PEN – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the Take Pen gate is opened. Remove ducks from Take Pen and move

them toward Obstacle 1. Exercise ends when ducks pass the green 4’ gate.

HRDI Handler may assist the dog. HRDII Handler may enter the pen but should not move the stock. HRDIII Handler remains outside the Pen.

2. OBSTACLE 1 – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the ducks pass the green 4’ gate. Move the ducks through Obstacle

#1 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when the ducks have exited Obstacle1.

3. HOLD – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the ducks have correctly exited Obstacle1. Team will move ducks to the marker indicating the hold area. In the open, the dog should independently hold the ducks to the handler. Exercise ends when the Judge calls the Hold.

4. OBSTACLE 2 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the Judge calls the Hold. Team shall move the ducks through Obstacle

2 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when the ducks have exited Obstacle 2.

5. FETCH/DRIVE – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the ducks have exited Obstacle 2. Fetch/Drive the ducks to the Drive Marker. Exercise ends when the ducks have reached Drive Marker.

HRDI Handler may move anywhere. HRDII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the ducks reach the Drive Marker. HRDIII Handler remains behind Obstacle 1 & 2 until the ducks reach the Drive Marker.

6. OBSTACLE 3 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the ducks have reached Drive Marker. Team shall move the ducks

through Obstacle 3 as drawn on the diagram. Exercise ends when ducks exit Obstacle 3.

HRDI & HRDII will proceed to #8 Re-Pen. HRDIII will stop and complete #7 Sort before completing #8 Re-Pen.

7. SORT – 10 pts. – HRDIII Only: Exercise begins when the ducks reach the Transport Crate. Sort 2 ducks into the Transport Crate. Briefly close the door and then release the ducks to rejoin the others. Exercise ends when the when the 2 ducks are released.

8. REPEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when all the ducks have exited Obstacle #3. All Teams shall move the ducks to the pen gate, hold ducks off gate, and re-pen. Exercise ends when the pen gate is closed.

4. OBSTACLE 2 – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep have exited Obstacle 1. Team shall move the sheep into Obstacle 2. The dog will hold the sheep in the obstacle while the handler opens the gate on the opposite side. Sheep are removed from Obstacle 2 the dog will cover sheep while handler shuts the gate. Exercise ends when the Obstacle 2 gate is closed.

5. HOLD – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the Obstacle 2 gate is closed. Team will move sheep to the marker indicating the hold area. In the open, the dog should independently hold the sheep to the handler. Exercise ends when the Judge calls the Hold.

6. OBSTACLE 3 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the Judge calls the Hold. Team shall move the sheep through

Obstacle 3 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when sheep exit Obstacle 3.

All teams will proceed to #8 Re-Pen. HRDIII will stop at the Hold Marker and complete #7 Sort before completing #8 Re-Pen.

7. SORT – 10 pts. – HRDIII Only: Exercise begins when the sheep reach the marker indicating the hold area. Place a prepared Marker (ribbon/collar) on 1 sheep. Exercise ends when the Marker is placed

8. REPEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when all the sheep have exited Obstacle #3. All Teams shall move the sheep to P2, hold stock off gate, and re-pen. Exercise/Time ends when the gate to P2 is closed.

Time.

1. GATHER – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the dog is sent to gather the sheep. Team should move to the location appropriate for their level. Gather the sheep and move them counter clockwise around the Handler’s Post. Exercise ends when sheep have moved behind the Handler’s Post.

HRDI Dog may be positioned half way to sheep, the Handler may move to within 15’ of stock. HRDII Dog will be positioned at the Handler’s Post, the Handler may move half way to stock. HRDIII Dog and handler will be positioned at the Handler’s Post.

2. OBSTACLE 1 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep move behind the Handler’s Post. Move the sheep into

Obstacle 1 as shown on the diagram. After the sheep have entered the obstacle, the dog will enter the pen and bring the sheep back out the same gate. Exercise ends when the sheep have exited Obstacle1.


3. OBSTACLE 2 – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep have exited Obstacle 1. Team shall move the sheep

through Obstacle 2 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when the sheep have exited Obstacle2

4. FETCH/DRIVE – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep exit Obstacle 2. Fetch/Drive the sheep to the Drive Marker. Exercise ends when the sheep have reached the Drive Marker.

HRDI Handler may move anywhere. HRDII Handler remains at the HRDII/HOLD Marker until the stock reach the Drive Marker. HRDIII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line and drives the sheep to the Drive Marker.

5. OBSTACLE 3 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when sheep reach the Drive Marker. Team shall move the sheep through

Obstacle 3 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when sheep exit Obstacle 3. 6. HOLD – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when all the sheep have exited Obstacle #3. Team will move sheep to the Level II

Drive Marker indicating the hold area. In the open, the dog should independently hold the sheep to the handler. Exercise ends when the Judge calls the Hold.

All teams will proceed to #8 Re-Pen. HRDIII will complete #7 Sort before completing #8 Re-Pen.

7. SORT – 10 pts. – HRDIII Only: Exercise begins when the sheep reach the P3 gate. Handler will gate sort 2 marked sheep into P3. Exercise ends when the gate to P3 is briefly closed. Resume #8 Re-Pen.

8. REPEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the Judge calls the Hold. All Teams shall move the sheep to P3, hold stock off gate, and re-pen. Exercise/Time ends when the gate to P3 is closed.

JULY 14, 2018 – HRD Sheep - CLOSE GENERAL RULES:

Time 20 minutes. In all elements, quiet efficient stock work is essential. Ties are broken based on individual scores in the following order: Exercise 5 “Call-Off”, Exercise 2 “Pens & Alleys”,

Time. STARTING SET- UP:

All gates are closed except the gate between P1 and the Stockyard. 10 sheep in Stockyard, 5 sheep in Side Pen A, additional groups of sheep in pens in Alley A/B. A stock handler will be standing by in the Stock Handler’s Shelter. There will be a water tank on course, located in the Narrow Alley adjacent to P3.

1. SORT – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the 4’ gate to the Stockyard is opened. Sort the designated group of 5 sheep into

Side Pen A. Exercise ends when the gate to Side Pen A is closed. 2. PENS & ALLEYS – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the gate to Side Pen A is closed. Move the remaining group of sheep

up Alley A/B and release into Arena A through P2. Remove sheep from designated pen (leave gate open) in Alley A/B and move them through P2 down the Chute Alley and through P1 into Stockyard. Collect sheep from Side Pen A and pen in Alley C/D Exercise ends when the gate between the Chute Alley and P1 is closed.

3. FETCH/DRIVE – HRDI/II: 15 pts, HRDIII 20 pts: Exercise begins when the gate between the Chute Alley and P1 is closed.

Enter Arena A. Fetch/Drive sheep through Obstacle 1 and into Obstacle 2 (as shown on the diagram). Exercise ends when the sheep enter Obstacle 2. HRDI Handler may take any position. HRDII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock reach the exit Obstacle 1. HRDIII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock enter Obstacle 2.

4. OBSTACLE 2 – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the sheep enter Obstacle 2. Dog will hold the sheep in the obstacle while

the handler opens the gate on the opposite side. Sheep are removed from Obstacle 2; the dog will cover sheep while handler shuts the gate. Exercise ends when the Obstacle 2 gate is closed.

5. CALL OFF – 10 pts: Exercise begins when Obstacle 2 gate is closed. Move sheep to the Handler’s Post. Call dog off

and allow/encourage sheep to escape to the far end of the arena. Exercise ends when the sheep reach P2. 6. GATHER – HRDI/II: 15 pts, HRDIII 20 pts: Exercise begins when the sheep reach P2. Send dog to gather sheep to the

handler. Exercise ends when the sheep pass counter clockwise behind the handler’s Post. HRDI Dog is left half way to the stock, Handler may move within 15 feet of the sheep HRDII Dog is left at the Handler’s Post, Handler may move halfway to sheep HRDIII Handler remains at the Handler’s Post

7. OBSTACLE 3 – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the sheep pass behind the Handler’s Post. Move sheep thru Obstacle 3 as

shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when sheep exit Obstacle 3. 8. RE-PEN – 10 pts: Exercise begins when sheep exit Obstacle 3. Controlled fetch to P1, hold off gate and re-pen sheep

through P1 into Stockyard. Exercise/Time ends when the sheep are penned and gate between P1 and Arena A is closed.

Time.

1. GATHER – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the dog is sent to gather the sheep. Team should move to the location appropriate for their level. Gather the sheep and move them counter clockwise around the Handler’s Post. Exercise ends when sheep have moved behind the Handler’s Post.

HRDI Dog may be positioned half way to sheep, the Handler may move to within 15’ of stock. HRDII Dog will be positioned at the Handler’s Post, the Handler may move half way to stock. HRDIII Dog and handler will be positioned at the Handler’s Post.

2. OBSTACLE 1 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep move behind the Handler’s Post. Move the sheep into

Obstacle 1 as shown on the diagram. After the sheep have entered the obstacle, the dog will enter the pen and bring the sheep back out the same gate. Exercise ends when the sheep have exited Obstacle1.


3. OBSTACLE 2 – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep have exited Obstacle 1. Team shall move the sheep

through Obstacle 2 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when the sheep have exited Obstacle2

4. FETCH/DRIVE – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when the sheep exit Obstacle 2. Fetch/Drive the sheep to the Drive Marker. Exercise ends when the sheep have reached the Drive Marker.

HRDI Handler may move anywhere. HRDII Handler remains at the HRDII/HOLD Marker until the stock reach the Drive Marker. HRDIII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line and drives the sheep to the Drive Marker.

5. OBSTACLE 3 – 15 pts.: Exercise begins when sheep reach the Drive Marker. Team shall move the sheep through

Obstacle 3 as shown on the diagram. Exercise ends when sheep exit Obstacle 3. 6. HOLD – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when all the sheep have exited Obstacle #3. Team will move sheep to the Level II

Drive Marker indicating the hold area. In the open, the dog should independently hold the sheep to the handler. Exercise ends when the Judge calls the Hold.

All teams will proceed to #8 Re-Pen. HRDIII will complete #7 Sort before completing #8 Re-Pen.

7. SORT – 10 pts. – HRDIII Only: Exercise begins when the sheep reach the P3 gate. Handler will gate sort 2 marked sheep into P3. Exercise ends when the gate to P3 is briefly closed. Resume #8 Re-Pen.

8. REPEN – 10 pts.: Exercise begins when the Judge calls the Hold. All Teams shall move the sheep to P3, hold stock off gate, and re-pen. Exercise/Time ends when the gate to P3 is closed.

JULY 15, 2018 – HRD Cattle - CLOSE GENERAL RULES:

Time 20 minutes. In all elements, quiet efficient stock work is essential. Ties are broken based on individual scores in the following order: Exercise 6 “Pens & Alley”, Exercise 7 “Re-pen”, Time.

STARTING SET- UP:

All gates are closed except the gate between P3 and the Footbath Alley. 5 cows in Arena B, 5 cows in Side Pen B, additional groups of cows in pens in Alley C/D. A stock handler will be standing by in the Upper Back Alley. There will be a water tank on course, located in the Narrow Alley adjacent to P3.

1. GATHER – HRDI/II: 15 pts, HRDIII 20 pts: Time begins when handler sends the dog. Send dog to gather cows from the

Set-Out and fetch to the handler. Exercise ends when the cows pass behind the handler’s Post. HRDI Dog is left half way to the stock, Handler may move within 15 feet of the cows HRDII Dog is left at the Handler’s Post, Handler may move halfway to cows HRDIII Team begins at the Handler’s Post. Once the dog is sent, handler remains behind the handler’s line

2. OBSTACLE 1 – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the cows pass behind the handler’s Post. Move cows through Obstacle 1

(as shown in the diagram). Exercise ends when the cows exit Obstacle 1. 3. OBSTACLE 2 – 15 pts: Exercise begins when the cows exit Obstacle 1. Move cows thru Obstacle 2 as shown on the

diagram. Exercise ends when cows clear Obstacle 2. 4. FETCH/DRIVE – HRDI/II: 15 pts, HRDIII 20 pts: Exercise begins when the cows exit Obstacle 2. Fetch/Drive cows

through Obstacle 3 (as shown on the diagram) and to P3. Exercise ends when the gate to P3 is opened. HRDI Handler may take any position. HRDII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock reach the HRDII Marker. HRDIII Handler remains behind the Handler’s Line until the stock reach P3.

5. SORT – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the gate to the P3 is opened. Move cows through P3 into Footbath Alley. Utilizing

the Stockyard gate at P4, sort 2 cows into the Stockyard leaving the remaining 3 cows in the Footbath Alley. Call the dog off and leave the Footbath Alley through P3. Exercise ends when the gate to P3 is closed.

6. ALLEY & PENS – 15 pts: Exercise begins when the gate to P3 is closed. Remove cows from pen (leave gate open) in

Alley C/D and release cows into Arena B through P3. Collect cows from Side Pen B and release them into the Upper Back Alley through P3. Exercise ends when the gate to P3 is closed.

7. RE-PEN – 10 pts: Exercise begins when the gate to P3 is closed. Return to the Footbath Alley and pen remaining 3 original

cows in stockyard. Collect all cows from Stockyard and re-pen in Side Pen B. Exercise/Time ends when cows are penned.

In addition, the winning team will be awarded an individual plaque commemorating their accom-plishment donated by PackLeader Farm.

An engraved plate will be added to the perpetual trophy created and donated by Pete Dykstra, to record the winning team of this trophy each year.

AwardCriteria:The trophy will be presented to the team determined by the judges to have a good working partnership, who demon-strates good stockmanship and good sportsmanship, and who contributes to the success of others. This award is not based on scores received during the Kelpie Roundup although that can be a consideration in the nomination pro-cess but it is only one part of the criteria that makes this team deserving in the eyes of the other competitors, stock handlers and the judges.

Selection:Final selection will be made by the judges. Nominations will be determined as follows:

Each judge will nominate a team for the trophy; Stock handlers will vote and the name of the team get-

ting the highest number of votes will be added to the judges’ nominations;

Finally, all competitors will get one vote. They may not vote for themselves or for any team that has a dog they own or co-own. Must be entered and present on Sun-day to vote. The names of the top three teams in this vote will be added to the judges’ nominations

Once they receive the nominations from the stock handers and competitors, the judges will make their se-lection for the trophy.
