KALAMA President, Friends of Hawaii Charities Friends of Hawaii Charities President Corbett Kalama will look you in the eye, and with a gentle smile will say, “Golf doesn’t talk enough about its impact on the community. . . There is a soul to golf.” He won’t pivot on this topic he passionately represents in Hawaii and for Hawaii, to talk about golf visitors who are a “good spend,” or the fact that 10 percent of Hawaii’s visitors from Canada play golf here, or even to emphasize the huge global impact Hawaii’s PGA TOUR events make via television. What he will highlight is the $18 million-plus the Sony Open in Hawaii has raised for charity, valuable charity partnerships fostered like Friends’ alliance with The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. for nearly 20 years, and the 1,500 men, women and youth who gladly volunteer for it each year. He may also mention the ripple effect of a multitude of charity events conducted daily at Hawaii golf courses, and the value of Hawaii golf courses with design features that actually channel flood waters away from homes at risk. And Hawaii’s youth? Beyond the charity grants distributed to numerous assistance and enrichment programs for keiki with needs, he may invite you to the annual Pro-Junior Challenge, benefitting the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. Competing on Waialae greens, Hawaii junior golfers are given an extraordinary experience to play with the pros, whetting their appetite to pursue their game and life with nothing less than their best, so they can give back, too. Kalama may even pull out a 14-year-old thank you card he received from then junior golf phenom, Michelle Wie. “She had scribbled a note in pencil thanking us for letting her play Sony.” Yes. There is a soul to golf, indeed. SUPPORT HAWAII NON-PROFITS WITH YOUR DONATION Each year, Sony Open charity host Friends of Hawaii Charities and charity partner The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. distribute more than $1 million to local non-profit organizations that provide life-changing support to women, children, the elderly and the needy throughout the Hawaiian Islands. Your gift will be recognized through the Friends Club program, a year-round fund-raising program of Friends of Hawaii Charities. “Hawaii Meals on Wheels is one of the greatest blessings I’ve ever received.
