Samantha is a first-year Master of Public Health student in Environmental Health
Sciences at the University of Michigan. Her undergraduate degree is in Civil/
Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to starting
graduate school, Samantha worked on a startup company aimed at implementing
sustainable water quality interventions in rural India. It was this work that piqued her
interest in the policy side of public health and exploring the multidisciplinary
approaches required for successful poverty-alleviation programs. Samantha's current
interests also include the interaction between environmental factors and human
health. Outside of academics, Samantha enjoys traveling, going to the movies, and
west coast swing dancing.

Aashna is a rising senior at Duke University. She is majoring in Economics and pursuing a
certificate in Sustainable Engagement. Aashna grew up in New Delhi, India before she
came to Duke for her undergraduate studies. As a global citizen, she is passionate
about sustainability, international development and economic impact. As a part of the
Duke Engage program, she interned with a Wind Energy organization in Peru and
conducted a socio-economic impact assessment and also built wind turbines from
scratch. She has researched on solar electronic waste and end of life management at
the Energy and Resources Institute in New Delhi, India. She hopes to rehumanize
economics and development through her future endeavors.

Ryan is in his final year of a dual Master’s degree program at The University of Texas at Austin. He will
be receiving degrees in Global Policy Studies at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and Energy and
Earth Resources at the Jackson School of Geosciences. His specialization is energy security,
renewable energy, and climate change policy. He has interned at Human Rights Watch Indonesia
and was a recipient of the 2017 US State Department Critical Language Scholarship in Indonesian.
He was also worked on an interdisciplinary project planning the transition of the Oki Islands, Japan
from oil-based electricity generation toward 100% renewable energy. He represented the University
of Texas Longhorn Energy Club at the 2015 Paris UNFCCC talks. He speaks Intermediate Indonesian
and Italian, and Beginner Spanish and Mandarin. He hopes to pursue a career working in carbon
emission reduction negotiation and renewable energy infrastructure development.

Cenxing is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in public policy at Duke University’s Sanford
School of Public Policy. Coming from Shanghai, China, Cenxing graduated from Fudan Univer-
sity in 2017 with a degree in Communication, where she honed her skills in editing news and
managing social media accounts. During her senior year, she interned at a social enterprise
called Dialogue in the Dark for eight months, working with visually impaired and hearing
impaired to provide workshops in darkness and silence. This working experience showed her
both the potential and hardship of minority groups, generated her interest in the improvement
of economic and social equality, especially in the context of education and labor market. In
her spare time, she enjoys reading, watching movies and playing badminton.

Matt is pursuing a Master of Science in Environmental Science and a Master of Public Affairs at
Indiana University, focusing on Energy and Environmental Policy. Prior to beginning the dual-
degree program at Indiana, Matt enjoyed a five-year career as a professional runner, as well as
a running coach and freelance writer. He has represented the United States at World Cham-
pionship events three times and continues to enjoy racing competitively in mountain and trail
races. Matt received his Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Uni-
versity of Illinois and a Juris Doctor from Indiana University’s Maurer School of Law. After law
school, he worked on patent litigation matters at the Chicago-based firm Winston & Strawn LLP
before moving on to pursue running full time. Matt is passionate about climate change and en-
ergy issues, and he is excited about the summer program as well as his new career path.
Jiaxin is a first-year Master of Environmental Management candidate concentrating in
Environmental Economics and Policy. Born and raised in China, she went to the University of
Southern California with double majors in Environmental Studies and Communication. With her
communication background, she became interested in talking environmental issues from social
perspective and human interaction. To polish such crafts essential for environmental
management, she took charge of advocacy and communication while working at several
environmental NGOS. She attended the 66th UN DPI/NGO conference in South Korea and
COP23 in Germany, where she saw first-hand international negotiation and collaboration took
place and intended to work on international environmental sustainability upon completion of
the program. During her spare time, Jiaxin enjoys music (she plays harp, piano, erhu and Irish
whistle) and travel.

Shivangi is a first year dual degree graduate student pursuing an MPP and MEM from Duke
University. She grew up in New Delhi, India and graduated from The University of Chicago in 2014
with a degree in Economics. After graduation, she worked as a fellow with the Indian
government planning smart cities and policies around urbanization. Realizing the need for
environmental considerations in India’s development plans, she worked with the Wildlife
Conservation Society-India on human-wildlife conflict and community displacement. She is
interested in exploring overlaps between socio-economic development and biodiversity goals
and hopes to pursue policy work in this field. When not working, she enjoys traveling,
birdwatching and unwinding with her favorite TV show or book.

Galen Hiltbrand is a Master of Environmental Management candidate at Duke’s Nicholas School
of the Environment. Prior to Duke, Galen was the Assistant Organizing Director of Penn-
Environment’s Climate Defender campaign, building grassroots support and lobbying for climate
action in Pennsylvania. Before this role, she was the Citizen Outreach Director for Penn-
Environment and Environment California working on numerous environmental campaigns. Galen
graduated from Georgetown University in 2014 with a B.A. in Psychology and a minor in
Environmental Science. During her undergraduate career, she interned for the Carbon War
Room, the National Park Service & Center for Climate Communication, and was a member of
Georgetown Energy, a group that initiated solar projects on campus. Galen intends to pursue a
career expanding sustainable energy in order to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Mya Nwe is a first-year Master of Environmental Management candidate at Duke University’s
Nicholas School of the Environment. Born and raised in Myanmar, Mya moved to the U.S. to
pursue a liberal arts degree in Environmental Studies at St. Olaf College. Her environmental
science fieldwork took her to Australia for a semester, where she gained hands-on research
skills and a deep appreciation for nature. Prior to her time at Duke, she spent almost five years
working for World Wildlife Fund. She was part of the U.S.-based team leading the start-up of a
new WWF office in her home country. She was also involved in WWF’s multinational work to
support wildlife conservation and green economy in the Mekong region. Currently, Mya is
excited to develop her skills in climate change adaptation, renewable energy, and sustaina-
ble development. In her spare time, Mya enjoys trying new restaurants, cooking, dancing,

Born and raised in Mexico City, Alma developed a keen interest in understanding
environmental issues. While in college, she wrote a thesis on the dynamics of energy
cooperation in North America. After graduating, she worked for Pemex, Mexico´s National Oil
Company, and in the Canadian Embassy in Mexico. Alma is interested in the intersection of
education and human capital development within the energy sector and in helping
developing countries to achieve their sustainable and energy transition goals. Outside of the
classroom, Alma is passionate about dance and playing the drums.

Rachel is a Master of Public Policy candidate at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Her
interests lie at the intersection of development and the environment, namely community resilience
and natural resource management. After graduating with a B.A. in Global Studies, Rachel worked as a
program director at a nonprofit financial institution where she managed a randomized control trial.
Her interest in impact evaluation led her to spend a year in Guatemala working as a business
consultant for social entrepreneurs. By engaging with entrepreneurs, Rachel witnessed the impact
global supply chains have on developing communities and, consequently, the importance of
supporting environmentally and socially sustainable commodities. In Geneva, Rachel intends to study
how macroeconomic forces shape development and community based natural resource
management. In her free time, she enjoys connecting with the local community on food equity issues
and works on a small farm.

United States, where she received her B.S. degrees in Geographical Sciences, GIS and
Environmental Science and Technology, Natural Resource Management. While in college, she
taught GIS course as a teaching assistant awarded “Excellence in Service” Medal, conducted
environmental research as a lab assistant with a publication as co-author, and assisted the

Rachel is a native North Carolinian who spent her summers exploring the Great Smoky Mountains,
where she developed a strong interest in environmental issues. Rachel is a development coordinator at
the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association (CFSA). In this role, she works to equip farmers in the Caroli-
nas with the tools necessary to become successful organic producers and to deepen their engage-
ment on environmental and public health issues. Previously, Rachel worked for the League of Conserva-
tion Voters (LCV) in Washington, D.C. where she focused on electing pro-environment candidates to
office at the state and federal levels. Her professional background also includes working for the Safer
Chemicals, Healthy Families Coalition (SCHF) and the Union of Concerned Scientists, a leading science
advocacy organization. Rachel serves on the board of Duke's Diverse and Inclusive Community for the
Environment (DICE). She earned her bachelor’s degree from Goucher College in Peace Studies and
Environmental Studies.

work experience in China. Starting from the Institute for Global Health, Peking University, where she
was involved in the research on Chinese foreign aid assessment to Africa, she obtained a first
glimpse into the working of Global Health. After that, she served as an executive assistant at a
startup specializing in African investment and the China Center for Health Economic Research,
which further confirmed her resolve to pursue a career in public health and work towards
decreasing health disparity. Her current professional interest involves working as a public health
researcher, committing to rigorous evaluations to develop tailored interventions to improve health
determinants.

Mathama Bility was born in South Africa and was raised in North Carolina, USA. She is studying
Public Policy and Global Health at Duke University, graduating in Spring 2018. Her academic
work has focused on child health and education, leading her to co-author two research
projects: one on prenatal health in rural Honduras and another on educational opportunities
to disabled youth in Uganda. Her passion for empowering vulnerable children and families
led her to complete an internship in Sesame Workshop’s International Social Impact de-
partment. There, she helped to develop UNICEF’s WASH initiative into educational content
for children using the beloved “Sesame Street” characters. Mathama’s passion for global
health work is linked to her love of media-making; in 2015, she produced a short documen-
tary film about the Ebola epidemic in Liberia. Mathama is thrilled to be a Global Health Fel-
low and is eager to deepen her knowledge and experience as a global health practitioner.

University of Illinois at Chicago and is a certified Registered Health Information Administrator.
She spent seven years working in various positions of HIM, with her most recent position
dealing with hospital policy and internal auditing. She decided to pursue a Master’s degree in
Global Health at Loma Linda to fulfill her passion to work with those facing healthcare
inequalities and injustice in low-income countries. She was recently in Sierra Leone, working
with a NGO on a project training birth attendants newborn resuscitation techniques in rural
villages and in the Philippines working with mothers and children under two researching
causes of malnutrition and stunting. She is excited to build on her experience in the global
health field at the level offered through this program. She enjoys trying new food and running
or hiking outdoors is her stress reliever.
Kaitlyn is currently pursuing her Master of Science in Global Health at Duke University. As an
undergraduate, she studied Medicine, Health and Society and Psychology at Vanderbilt
University. This fall, Kaitlyn will be conducting her thesis research in Moshi, Tanzania, exploring
alcohol abuse among patients with violent injuries. Kaitlyn hopes to have a career in
substance abuse prevention and violence and injury prevention. Kaitlyn has studied in France
and Denmark, and has volunteered for various health education projects in India, South
Africa, Costa Rica, and Thailand. In her spare time, Kaitlyn enjoys skiing, hiking, running, and
traveling.

A first year medical student at Drexel College of Medicine, Sidhant Gugale has been involved
in a myriad of experiences at the intersection of medicine, global health, and entrepreneur-
ship. After spending a summer in India researching the differences in access to healthcare in
rural vs urban settings and the various social determinants of health in developing countries, he
spend the last few years working with a nonprofit organization to ship lightly used or surplus
medical equipment from various hospitals in NJ to underprivileged communities in Maharash-
tra, India. He has also worked on a low cost portable incubation device aimed at bridging the
gap in neonatal care in rural communities, and conducted organic chemistry synthesis
research in Dr. James Merritt’s lab on brain penetrant CCR1 antagonists. Currently, he is on the
executive board of the Global and Public Policy Group at Drexel, and spends his free time
watching New England Patriots games, volunteering, and coaching swimming.

Shruti was born in Delhi, India and moved to Georgia at age 5. She graduated from Emory
University as a Dean's Achievement Scholar with a B.S. in Chemistry and a B.A. in Economics.
She earned Highest Honors on her organic chemistry thesis in HIV dual-tropic drugs and drug
market analyses. Her research led her to explore further topics on barriers to drug access and
public health policy through work on Obamacare the Dept. of Health and Human Services,
on anti-microbial resistance with India's Minister of Health Dr.Vardhan, and on private sector
policy to eradicate malnutrition in the third world. Shruti is now an M.D. candidate at Medical
College of Georgia, where she is currently exploring topics in women's health and pediatric
cancer. She hopes to take what she learns as a Fellow back to southeast America to combat
the issues surrounding our low health status. Shruti enjoys dancing, organizing TEDx events,
running a free Pediatric Clinic, and exploring new restaurants.

Daniel Helldén is a fourth year medical student at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Swe-
den. He is also pursuing a bachelor in business and economics at the Stockholm School of
Economics. Being deeply passionate about global health, he has led several student glob-
al health organizations and initiatives and spent time at project sites in Kolkata, India and
Iganga, Uganda. As a part-time research assistant at Karolinska Institutet, Daniel has
worked on a range of topics within the field of health systems research, among them the
cultural context of health and neonatal resuscitation practices in resource limited settings.
He is currently a student coordinator at the Swedish Institute for Global Health Transfor-
mation based at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Daniel´s main interests include
health system governance and financing, maternal and child health as well as interdisci-
plinary student involvement in global health.

Matthew was born and raised in San Francisco, California and attended the George

University of California San Diego, where he is focusing on international economics. Mat-
thew is interested in the intersection of global health and economic policy, and was intro-
duced to the field by spending a summer in St. Petersburg, Russia assisting with a research
project relating to ocular diagnosis of HIV and tuberculosis. Between college and graduate
school, Matthew worked as a private investigator, a barista and in corporate governance
and spent several months traveling independently in Europe, Asia and Latin America. In his
free time, he enjoys jogging, listening to live music, and reading about ancient history.

Jordan graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Spanish with focuses in
Chemistry and Latin American Studies in 2017. During his studies, he found an interest Latin
American health both locally and globally, and pursued research opportunities that allowed
him to better understand the relationship between Latino populations and health. Most
recently he spent time in Valladolid, Mexico where he researched the integration of
traditionally Mayan medicinal practices with conventional healthcare practices and how both
are received by the ethnically Mayan of the city and its surrounding communities. Jordan is
currently a first-year medical student in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he continues to
explore public health research in the Latino communities alongside his regular studies with a
special interest in cost-effective public health interventional strategies. Jordan hopes to
continue supporting Latino health as a practicing physician in the future through research and
advocacy.

Malcolm Kates is a medical student at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Malcolm
received his BS in Biology and BA in International Studies from the College of Charleston
Honors College, where he minored in History and Spanish. As an undergraduate, Malcolm
studied international relations abroad in Cuba, and sustainability and biology in Spain. Prior to
medical school, he received a Post-baccalaureate Intramural Research Training Award to
conduct basic and translational research in neurology at the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
in Washington, DC. His time in the nation’s capital sparked his interest in health policy and its
impact on patient care. As a member of the “Global and Local Health Equity” and “Health
Outcomes and Policy” concentrations at the University of Florida, he works through UF’s Equal
Access Clinic and international outreach in the Dominican Republic to better understand and
promote the elimination of disparities in healthcare at local, national, and international levels.
Outside of school, Malcolm enjoys hiking, traveling, tennis, and being near the water.

Having experienced the rich cultural landscapes of countries such as China, India, Peru, Por-
tugal, and France, Annie considers herself a proud citizen of this beautifully diverse world, yet
also a witness to the many wrongs of our time. As such, she is passionate about planetary
health and international community-building as vehicles toward a just, connected, and
empowered humanity. While at the University of Pennsylvania, she founded the chapter of
Students For Sensible Drug Policy, and oversaw collaboration among 18 sustainability organi-
zations. Annie's coursework in behavioral and biological sciences, research on spirituality in
health systems, and education as a yoga instructor and birth doula have informed her inte-
grated view on health. Returning to her hometown to attend the University of Miami’s dual
graduate program in Public Health (MPH) and International Administration (MAIA), Annie is
also a policy and research associate at IDEA Exchange, a syringe exchange.

Ijeoma is a first-generation Nigerian-American, raised in Pasadena, California, and has always
had an interest in low-resourced communities and learning about different cultures. Ijeoma is

concentration in Global Health, and a cognate in maternal, newborn, and child health,
Ijeoma’s focus is on the public health challenges, such as health disparities, in low-resourced
countries and communities. Ijeoma graduated from the University of California Los Angeles
with a bachelor’s degree in English and an African American Studies minor, which equipped
her with the history and knowledge to provide change in vulnerable communities. In her free

May of 2016, she received her BA in Psychology from the University of Michigan. Aida
concentrated her undergraduate studies on the organizational psychology of businesses,
systems, and organizations. Following graduation, Aida started her career in Healthcare

level (the EYP, the EYPW and the ASEM Model). Marta has occasionally worked alongside

their “Youth Ambassador” in 2014. Appointed in 2017 as the Swiss UNESCO YouthRep, she

ford University Press. While a research fellow at Princeton University's Niehaus Center for Globalization and
Governance in 2010-2011, Johnson co-sponsored a conference that brought together political scientists,
natural scientists, lawyers, and economists to discuss ongoing climate change negotiations. She previously

Gavin Yamey, MD, MPH, trained in clinical medicine at Oxford University and University College London,
medical journalism and editing at the BMJ and public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropi-
cal Medicine. He was Deputy Editor of the Western Journal of Medicine, Assistant Editor at the BMJ, a
founding Senior Editor of PLOS Medicine, and the Principal Investigator on a $1.1 million grant from the Bill
& Melinda Gates Foundation to support the launch of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases. In 2009, he was
awarded a Kaiser Family Mini-Media Fellowship in Global Health Reporting to examine the barriers to scal-
ing up low cost, low tech health tools in Sudan, Uganda and Kenya. Dr. Yamey serves on two international
health commissions, the Lancet Commission on Investing in Health and the Lancet Commission on Global
Surgery. He has been an External Advisor to the WHO and to TDR, the Special Program for Research and
Training in Tropical Diseases. Dr. Yamey has published extensively on global health, neglected diseases,
health policy, and disparities in health and has been a frequent commentator on National Public Radio.
Before joining Duke, Dr. Yamey led the Evidence-to-Policy Initiative in the Global Health Group at the Uni-
versity of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and was an Associate Professor of Epidemiology & Biostatistics at

Frederick "Fritz" Mayer is Professor of Public Policy, Political Science, and Environment and Associate Dean for Strategy and
Innovation at Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy. Mayer teaches courses on the political economy of public poli-
cy, globalization and governance, political analysis, and leadership. In addition, Professor Mayer is the director of POLIS: The
Center for Political Leadership, Innovation and Service. Mayer's research concerns the role of stories in politics. His book Nar-
rative Politics: Stories and Collective Action (Oxford University Press, 2014) argues that shared stories are essential tools for
enabling communities to overcome free riding and other obstacles to collective action. He is particularly interested in the role
of narrative in global environmental politics. Mayer’s second line of research addresses globalization and its effects, with par-
ticular emphasis on the labor and environmental impacts of economic integration. His book Interpreting NAFTA: The Art and
Science of Political Analysis (Columbia University Press, 1998) chronicled the history of NAFTA and explores the nature of the
political processes that created NAFTA. Mayer received an A.B. in history and literature from Harvard College, and an M.P.P.

Sarah manages the Duke Global Policy Program in Geneva. She works to form strategic part-
nerships for the program and supports students in securing internships in Geneva. Outside of
the DGP Program, Sarah is responsible for managing Sanford’s international programs in In-
dia. Her research and academic background relate to international relations, political sci-
ence, and higher education. Sarah came to Duke University from Chicago in January 2016
after working for five years in global education and non-profits. After several experiences
living abroad, Sarah is honored to help students navigate new cultural contexts and effec-
tively network while in Geneva. She believes that cross-cultural engagement can embolden
individuals to actively pursue social equity and global understanding; therefore, she can not
be more grateful for her role with the DGP Program.
Annalisa received a B.A. in International Studies with minors in French and Environmen-
tal Science from North Carolina State University. Before joining Duke’s Sanford School
of Public Policy, she worked at the McKimmon Center for Extension and Continuing
Education, Wake County Government and Global Training Initiative at N.C. State. She
has research experience in all three tracks of the Geneva program, including an eco-
nomic research project for a governmental renewable energy site, an undergraduate
thesis on International Policy for Environmental Refugees, and has recently assisted a
global health non-profit in behavior research related to pediatric AIDS in Africa. She
believes that international issues are more important than ever, and is excited to assist
students in maximizing their opportunity for global policy leadership with resume/cover
letter editing, visa applications, and other pre-departure/Geneva onsite support.
