Happy New Year/Feliz Año Nuevo! Welcome to 2018. It seems as though just yesterday we were getting ready for the holiday break and we are already in the second week of the Spring Semester. I trust that parents had a good conference with your child's teacher as we start our move to the end of the academic year in mid-May. It will arrive in short order. As we enter the New Year, we also celebrate the life and contribution of Reverend Martin Luther King. Here is what he said about the value of education. "“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.” At CHPA we believe in his assessment and strive to provide the highest quality education while paying attention to the development of individuals with good character. It is an integral part of our philosophy of education. An order to accomplish this parent involvement is crucial. We welcome all parents to be partners in this endeavor. Spring also begins the planning for the next academic year with key decisions on programming, budgeting, staffing, facilities, safety, technology, academic achievement and other key decisions that impact the success of our students. It is going to be a rigorous and fruitful semester opening and before you know it we will be celebrating the graduation of our Seniors. Assessment data indicates that this year's graduating class will have 35% of our students earning our Associate's Degree along with their diploma and 68% having some college credit. Welcome to 2018! It is going to be an exciting semester.

Welcome back to school. I want to let everyone know how impressed I am by the results of our NWEA MAP tests and our student grades from PCC and CSU-P. Overall, we had quite an impressive semester. Each grade level in math havereached their goals at this point, language usage has shown to be impressive area, and we are seeing some growth in reading and science. We look forward to seeing what all students can do on their state assessments this year.

Dear CCA Families

I love taking time during the Holiday Break to reflect upon the wonders of the past year and the excitement of the New Year to come. Watching our students flourish with the guidance of the fabulous teachers at Cesar Chavez Academy is a true blessing. Parents, you are also an integral partners in this process and we invite you to join us in frequently monitoring your child’s learning. Here are some ways you can help:• Go through your child’s backpack each night, checking for homework to be completed or important papers/communications to be read.• Review your child’s planner checking for any assignments due orNotes from the teacher.• Read to or with them every day. A high level of independent readingis one of the key indicators of school success plus it is fun!• Talk with your child about the importance of school and getting a solid foundation for learning. Kindergarten is gearing up for 2018 and all the new challenges and activities that the New Year will bring.

Kindergarten students will be reading, reading, reading. This is a vital part of our curriculum and we encourage our students to read every day at home. In our Language Arts Curriculum the kindergarten students will start their “first readers.” They left for Winter Break excited that when they returned they would have “books” to read.

Count to 100—that is our goal for all kindergarten students. Practice counting to 100 at home as often as possible. Revisit shapes, sorting, classifying, and time.

Writing practice is essential—writing their name, copying words they see around your home, sound spelling. They are all important steps in writing. The kindergarten goal is that by the end of the year the students can write a complete sentence—with sound spelling.

Field trips will be coming—we are working on field trips to a local library, a college and before we know it we will be having our end of the year field trip. Speaking of end of the year—graduation will be here before you know it. Details about that will be coming, caps and gowns orders will be needed by the middle of March. Check your child’s homework folder daily for important notices.

Kindergarten will be a busy place the next couple of months. It will be so exciting to see how they grow—both physically and academically.

2nd Grade has just finished up two exciting units! Students loved learning about Simple Machines through hands-on learning kits. The unit on Greek Myths was challenging but the students loved the stories included. Students did an amazing job performing at the Winter Performance before break. We are continuing to learn about money, time, and fractions in Math. We will soon begin a new unit in language arts, including a new book of focus as well as a new unit on The War of 1812. We look forward to beginning a new year full of projects, field trips and fun!

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.This Monday, January 15th we will not have school in reflection and honor of one of the most influential leaders of our nation. We will be recognizing the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King. As a review who Dr. King was he was a pastor at a Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia from 1960 until his death on April 4, 1968. Dr. King was an important leader in our history as he led those unjustly treated to gain righteousness and virtue. Dr. King was a Civil Rights Leader who struggled through the many obstacles of discrimination, hatred, and exclusion during his lifetime. He had high standards for himself and succeeded in his educational goals as segregation and discrimination were mounting against the black community. Dr. King succeeded and did not allow the opposition to impede his goals. He went on to receive a doctorate and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. Dr. King’s famous speech “I Have a Dream” delivered at the Lincoln Memorial in 1968 is still to this day, read out loud in classes all over the world. Let us all reflect and learn from the lessons out of history that can help us become stronger and persevere. Middle school students are participating in a school wide challenge of collecting

soft plastic for the company Trex. Trex makes decks and bench's out of plastic.Students bringing in plastic can drop it off to Ms. Hancock in modular #9 room

#18 or to Mrs. Duran at DHPH in room 201. The challenge will run from

November to April. The school collecting the most plastic will get a bench made

out of plastic from Trex. Parents are encouraged to help by taking collected

plastic to Albertsons or King Soopers the designated drop off spots. Please

join in the fun by sending plastic to school with your students.

Welcome students and parents to CHPA’s 2018 science fair! Please take the time to read through this packet as it contains everything you and your student will need know to complete a successful project. If you have a student in one of Mr. McBee, Ms. Padilla, or Mr. Romero’s science classes they are required to submit a project, and it will constitute a significant portion of their grade throughout the third quarter. While science fair projects can seem like a daunting task, there’s no need to worry. Enclosed in this packet will be a clear road map for completion dates, a list of expectations, and links for accessing helpful tools and recourses to make the process fun and accessible. The basics: The primary objective of this project is to have students approach a problem scientifically. This includes: 1. Asking questions 2. Doing background research (all documentation in MLA format) 3. Forming hypotheses 4. Creating experiments to test those hypotheses 5. Organizing data and drawing conclusions 6. Communicating the results of your experiments Students are encouraged (though not required) to work with a partner, but no groups of three or more are allowed. The project must be experimental in nature as opposed to research oriented. In other words, students must do a test, survey, or experiment to determine the answer to their question instead of just looking it up in a book. We encourage students to pick topics that they are genuinely interested in, since they will be working on these projects for the next several weeks. Topics should also be “original” - something students do not already know. Students: once you have read through this packet with your parent or guardian, please have them sign the last page and return it to your teacher. This will be the first step in process and the first box you can tick on the list of actions to be completed. We are asking students to get this page to us by Tuesday, January 16th. At this point if there are any questions or concerns any of us can be reached by phone or email, and we will be available after school during tutoring hours and during STEAM club to help students and parents throughout the whole process. We are excited to begin this time of the year and can’t wait to see all the fun and interesting experiments our students can come up with! Parent/guardian Agreement Form (please sign this page and have your student return it to their teacher no later than Tuesday, January 16th)

Below is the agreement form. As science fair projects are by their nature more grand than most other activities or projects, we think it’s important to stress to all involved the level of commitment necessary for a successful project. Since these projects are more expansive and time consuming than most, the grading involved is also scaled up in terms of points available. In short, a poor performance on the project could have a large negative impact on the student’s grade for that quarter.

To avoid that outcome, we just want to know that parents are made aware of all requirements and completion dates well in advance; but more importantly that and that they understand that there are tons of resources to help both students and parents with the process. And finally, in addition to some class time being allotted to work on projects, science teachers have office hours after school for help and tutoring and are available during STEAM club for even more focused help for students or parents who wish to take advantage. We encourage any and all to stop by anytime they have questions.
