Principal’s Message School Council News The 2018-2019 KPS School Council met for the first time last Monday February 19th and held two separate meetings. The first meeting of any school council to begin the new council year is termed

the “Special and First School Council Meeting” and only has one agenda item being the election of office bearers.

I am pleased to now be able to announce the results of the election process to appoint members to these important positions.

President Glen Yates Vice President Terry Cumming Treasurer Grant Philpots Secretary Sam Eason Following this, the council then moved into the second meeting for the night the first full council meeting of the year. An important consideration for this meeting is always the question of what sub committees the council will require for the year ahead. The determined sub committees for the year 2018-2019 are –

Hot March Night This very popular event is just around the corner so please view the details on the poster and the information provided by Ché Stockley, event co-ordinator calling for bakers and volunteers. Easter Hat Parade We are now actually almost at the half way point of this short 9 week term. It is therefore time to provide some information about our Traditional Yearly Easter Hat Parade. Easter is still some time away but as usual the signs are out there with ‘eggs’, ‘chickens’ and ‘rabbits’ so to speak, in the shops already. However, it is not too early for parents and children’s’ minds to turn to

Easter Bonnets “with all the trims upon it”. The now traditional school Easter Hat Parade is always held on the last day of Term 1 “by executive order of the Principal”. It is a delightful way to finish the term and has grown over the last few years from a school assembly style event to a ‘Gala Occasion’ with appropriate media coverage. I am always so thrilled in the ways parents and extended families embrace this event. Parade Details Date: Thursday 29th March Time: 11.40am – 1pm approximately Location: in the Monday morning assembly area in front of the stage Audience: parents, grandparents, family and friends Dress Code for audience:

- audience members are encouraged to wear a hat or a head wear creation - a parade of parents with hats will take place

- some seating available on the deck, but feel free to BYO chair How long does it take? a) each of the 26 classes parades, dances, hops or twirls around the rectangle (approx. 45 minutes) b) parents’ parade takes longer than it should, as KPS parents are not shy and have been known to require some

time to “get off the stage” , but we thank them so much for joining in (approx. 8 minutes) c) the parade of “special effort” , those hats they have gained as a special effort acknowledgement What if it rains? We would go ahead with the event via a reduced model in hall, corridors or classrooms So all “old” KPS parents you have been through the Easter Hat Challenge before, new parents here are some guidelines for you. 1. don’t panic, we do not want Kingsville parents staying up creating “millinery masterpieces” into the wee small

hours 2. we do want it to be all about participation and fun for the students and creating great memories of

events and traditions during their primary school life. So, families get together to create your headgear e.g.

a Kingsville creation

a school sun hat decorated

traditional Easter theme

PYP “Profile of the Learner” hat (and we might see): - balanced - open minded caring creative hats

Yes, usually a football theme will always sneak in somewhere as well and that is fine. Teachers provide a great example and will always create and wear a hat and parade with their class.

So glue guns to the ready yet again and, let the imagination go and see what happens. Some members of our wonderful support staff will again form a panel of observers who will cast their eyes over all entries and, acknowledge special efforts from each class. Not the best, biggest or fanciest – just a special effort award for a member of each class and yes, a parent one as well. In preparation for the big event - don’t forget the cameras / devices to record the history to use at various 18th & 21st birthdays of the future. Also remember this is a casual clothes day so take that into consideration regarding the overall practicality of hat. Also the weather i.e. on windy days hats may need more attachment to the head. If all else fails “outsource” Thank you – more reminders during the remainder of the term. from “Head Bunny

Parent -Teacher Meetings Thursday 1st March 2018 Parent-teacher meetings offer great opportunities to deepen the working relationship between parents and teachers. The meeting is an opportunity for both parties to highlight the child's strengths, discuss academic and/or social challenges, and share vital information. Parent support for, and involvement in their child/childrens education is a critical factor which impacts on engagement and achievement. Creating a true partnership in a child's education establishes shared expectations for the child as they work to achieve their full potential. We therefore encourage all parents to take time to attend these meetings. Parent Teacher meetings will be held for all students from 1.30pm to 6.50pm on Thursday 1st March Parent Teacher meetings will be of 10 minutes duration. To book a time for the parent teacher meeting you will need to access your COMPASS parent portal. Access to bookings will be available from Monday 19th February. See the steps below to make this booking.

Using COMPASS you will be able to book the times that suit you best from any internet-connected computer. A computer is available in the front office foyer during school hours (8.45am – 4.00pm), if you do not have internet access at home or elsewhere. To make the Parent-Teacher meeting booking for your child/children complete the following steps:

Log into the Compass parent portal using your Username and Password

On your Compass homepage a list of your children will be displayed. A meeting link will appear under their name

Click on this link

Select a booking sheet. This will display the parent teacher conference dashboard, which includes a list of all of the times available

Other parents may be making bookings at the same time that you are using the system. It is possible, though unlikely, that a time slot is displayed to you as available, but is then booked by another parent shortly afterwards. If you then attempt to book this time slot it will not be available and a message will be displayed to indicate this.

If you encounter any problems using Compass system please contact the school office by phone on 9314 5869

This process will need to be repeated for every child

Please consider that you will need to move between rooms for sibling meetings and to therefore leave a gap to allow you to make your next meeting appointment time

Changes to Absenteeism Reporting Policy A review of the Attendance Guidelines for schools was undertaken in Term 4, 2017. During the January school holidays Minister for Education James Merlino announced changes to the School Attendance Guidelines, these require government schools notify parents of unexplained student absence as soon as practicable on the day of absence. Prior to the announcement, government schools were advised to attempt to make contact with the parent within three days of an unexplained student absence. The review and resulting changes to the guidelines will help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours. To meet the new requirements Kingsville will be notifying parents soon after 10.00a.m. each morning on a daily basis by email and text message with the following message: {student.name} has been marked absent without explanation as of 10.00a.m. If you require more info, please contact the school or log into parent portal. To record a reason for an absentee:

log onto the parent portal on Compass

from the Compass home screen (or from your student’s profile), click the ‘Add Parent Approval’ item

from the pop-up window, select the reason, enter a brief description of the absence, select the start and finish time

click the ‘Save’ button.

Alternatively you may contact the school by phone or email to provide reason for an absence. Peter Ritchie, Assistant Principal/PYP co-ordinator

Digital Parenting and Cyber Safety Presentation Last year, on February 24th 2017, Kingsville Primary School gained accreditation as an eSmart school. The eSmart program for schools is an initiative of the Alannah and Madeline Foundation. eSmart is a program that guides and supports schools to embed practices that create a culture of cyber safety and responsible digital citizenship. The process involves raising awareness of cyber safety in the school community, updating policy and ensuring the curriculum enables students and teachers to make use of the fantastic possibilities of the internet while being smart about its risks. Being eSmart is an ongoing process, and the school now moves into a “sustaining” phase. Safe and responsible use of technology is naturally part of the new Victorian Curriculum, and the school has a special focus on establishing expectations around how we use technology when classes are setting up their routines and practices in our first 15 days of school. As part of this ongoing process we have scheduled cyber safety expert Martine Oglethorp, from the Modern Parent Organisation https://themodernparent.net/, to visit the school to conduct information sessions for students, staff and parents. On March 15th students in the 5-6 area will be involved in a session with Martine. Martine will work with the students on keeping safe online as well as how they can make the best choices to ensure they are minimising the risks, whilst taking advantage of the many benefits of the online world. Aside from cyber safety and issues of privacy, students are also taught the crucial digital literacy and resilience skills they will need. Students will examine actual online conversations where things have gone wrong, and thus give them the language to come up with better responses, actions and words to ensure a better outcome. Along with the Year Five and Six student sessions, Martine will be hosting a parent information session in the evening. This session caters for parents with children in all levels of primary school and beyond. Please see the informational flyer attached with this newsletter for more information. Digital Parenting and Cyber Presentation Date: Thursday 15th March Time: 6.30p.m. Location: KPS Hall RSVP: Via response slip below Kingsville eSmart Team
