AMAZING LIVES, EVERYDAY MIRACLESPartnering with those on the outskirts of society

Inspiring transformed lives and communities

Bringing freedom from poverty

THROUGH RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS

Brenda lives in Namibia. She is HIV positive and because of this she had been pushed out from her community. People were either scared of her or felt that she had done something wrong. She was shunned and ended up living a lonely existence. This affected her opinion of herself. ‘I used to think that if I’m HIV positive, then I couldn’t be a child of God.’ Things changed for Brenda when her local Dignity Life Group welcomed her in. She was able to open up about her battle with the disease. The ARVS she has been taking have helped her feel significantly better physically and her friendships in the Life Group and growing relationship with Jesus have brought her new life.'I feel joy in me that I didn’t have before.’ Brenda is now reaching out to other HIV suffers and has created a support group to help with practical tasks and the cost of ARVS for those who cannot afford them. ‘This group brings the Word of God close to the people. They can relate to God.’ Many have come to Jesus!

Moses is a part of a Dignity Impact Team in the area where Brenda lives. He plants and supports Life Groups, small Christian led community discipleship groups to which everyone is welcome.‘I found that most churches are just in town, forgetting the people in the villages and not bringing any change to the villages.’ In 2015 he partnered with Dignity to do something about this and started planting Life Groups in the communities around where he lives. ‘Since we started with Dignity we are seeing communities appreciating the teaching and learning to relate to God. They are special people of God. They are seeing that God can use them in their villages!’ He has noticed the difference as the lives of individuals, families and wider communities are being impacted by Life Groups. ‘Their lives have been transformed. They are now uniting and families are coming together!’ Moses is part of a growing group of missionaries inspiring those around them to love God and to love their neighbour.

Dorothy runs a household of 18, oversees work on the family farm and earns some extra money for her family by working as a tailor in the evenings. Like Moses, she is a Dignity Impact Team member. One day as she working on her farm a lady who looked desperately unhappy asked Dorothy for some work. Feeling pity on her, Dorothy agreed to pay her for a day’s work. As they talked Dorothy discovered that the lady was called Rosemary and that she had been chased out of her community after being branded a witch. She was living an isolated life of poverty and owned only one set of clothes and struggled to feed herself. ‘Her family lives all round her and nearby. Her sons, daughters and wider family want nothing to do with her. They are scared of her.’ Rosemary felt alone and frightened. Dorothy believed that superstition had been the cause of Rosemary's suffering. ’I told that her she is not a witch. I told her about God, about the Life Group that meets and that she was welcome.’ Rosemary has joined a Life Group where she has found friendship and has discovered the love of Jesus. The Life Group is helping her to rebuild relationships with her family. Rosemary has a new life!

A good friend used to say that if you want a legacy, you should invest everything you own in the lives of other people. Jesus said that everything that you do in this life should be summarised in the actions of loving God and loving your neighbour as yourself.

Not every effect of your investment should be measured by financial return. Dignity likes to think of investment as creating opportunity for a ‘social return’ in the lives of others. This is your opportunity to add your influence to the prayer, hard work, hopes, dreams and faith of thousands of people that are part of the Dignity movement.

Dignity invests directly in the lives of people in many locations that are poor, remote and difficult to reach. This investment creates faith, social activism and transformation that brings life for everyone in the community. Our determined focus on these people means that you can be assured that your investment will affect change in some of the most vulnerable people who require it most.

An investment in the work of Dignity creates a legacy that lasts forever.

CREATING A LEGACY

THE DATAAT THE START OF 2018 THERE WERE:

11,480 Life Group Members*1,148 Social Enterprises**574 Life Groups45 Impact Team Leaders3 Nations

BY THE END OF 2018 WE ARE WORKING TOWARDS:

16,040 Life Group Members*1,604 Social Enterprises** 802 Life Groups54 Impact Team Leaders4 Nations

TO ACHIEVE THIS DIGNITY AND DIGNITY ZAMBIA WILL:

Spend $148,796 andinvest 3,366 staff hoursand 51,680 volunteer hours

*A mature life group will have between 10 and 30 members. We calculate total membership based on 20 people per group.**Based on anecdotal evidence, we estimate that for every 10 Life Groups members one social enterprise will begin. This may be a community project such as road mending or caring for the elderly or it may be an individual response caring for a neighbour or someone who is sick.

Life Groups are the primary method by which Dignity seeks to work in village and community settings.

Life Groups are simply small groups of people, anything from five to thirty people. The members of a Life Group are people of various backgrounds in the community. Whilst the group has a Christian identity, it is not exclusive and anyone is free to attend and participate.

We designed Life Groups to achieve three key goals:

• Unify and make effective the work of the church in the community, focusing on rural and remote areas.

• Help those in need by forming and encouraging a group of people to be community activists, taking responsibility for those who are suffering within their community

• See a wider change and transformation of the community by shaping its life and character through involvement in the life of the community,

10 years ago, there were no Life Groups. Today there are over 570 groups with a membership in excess of 11,000. We have seen the difference that individuals in Life Groups make and the social enterprises they undertake. They care for their neighbours, they feed the hungry, take care of orphans, accept the outcasts and instigate community development projects. In short they challenge the status quo, transforming to the lives of those around them and the wider community.

THE DATAAN INVESTMENT OF:$123.58 will plant a Life Group.$62 will plant a social enterprise.$6.18 will disciple one more person for a whole year.

IN 2018 DIGNITY WILL:Spend $28,175 on76 Life Group Training Courses toplant 228 new Life Groups anddisciple 4,560 people, touching the lives of 13,680* people andleading to 456 social enterprises.

IN ADDITION, IN 2019 THESE GROUPS WILL:Plant a further 46 Life Groupsdiscipling 920 more people, touching the lives of 2,760* people and leading to an additional92 social enterprises.

An investment in Life Groups will continue to bear fruit long after it has been given.

2

LIFE GROUPS

*We assume that every Life Group member touches the lives of at least 3 people. In reality, it is probably many more than this as whole families, villages and communities benefit from the personal growth of Life Group members.

Rather than importing what is needed for community change from outside, can you find what is required from within the community itself? Dignity believes you can and therefore works from the ground up to bring faith and transformation to people. Our ‘Impact Teams’ lead this fight in over 170 distinct rural population areas.

To initiate Life Groups requires people who are local, trained, motivated and passionate about the work that God has called them to do. These people for Dignity are our Impact Teams and they are the face of mission in the 21st century.

Team members are people taking responsibility for their own community. They are housewives, church leaders and farmers with a mix of educational levels living in remote areas. Importantly, they share the cultural background and knowledge of those they wish to reach and help. We have seen over many years that the most effective missionaries are not people that travel thousands of miles, rather they are those that manage to reach next door.

Working in groups of 3 or 4, Impact Team members provide advocacy, advice and help to existing Life Groups as well as pioneering the Dignity movement across their region. They build relationships, meet with community leaders and train Life Group leaders. What they do is no easy task especially as they work across remote, rural areas that are generally poor and difficult to reach.

Dignity’s motto ‘Amazing Lives, Everyday Miracles’ is inspired by their work. They are a potent weapon in Dignity’s armoury and a fantastic investment for those wishing to inspire and affect change.

THE DATAAN INVESTMENT OF:$664 will support a teammember for a whole year.$2,360 will support an average team for a whole year.

THIS WILL COVER:*$264 3 training events**$27 equipment (bikes, tents or mats)$349 travel costs and expenses (including emergency assistance)$24 mentoring new team members

Every person deserves to hear the message of Jesus Christ in their own language and culture. Dignity provides culturally relevant materials in multiple languages to help every community we come across grow in the knowledge of the Christian faith and apply that in serving their community, reducing poverty and alleviating suffering.

In the areas in which we work literacy and education levels are low with many people having only attended primary school at most*. Language is important. For example Zambia has 72 languages, split into 13 main language groups. Simply using english for everything is not an option.

Dignity overcomes these challenges by working collaboratively with Impact Team and Life Group members in the production and translation of our materials and tools. We work to ensure all the materials used are culturally appropriate, easy to read, group based and interactive so not everyone needs to read.

We have been blessed by a partnership with Rooted in Jesus** a study course we buy in. We have also produced a number of resources ourselves. Love Your Village is a 10 week course aimed at inspiring and equipping Life Groups to enact social change. Foundations is a unique discipleship resource with 52 group studies, written by 36 authors from different parts of the world giving it a truly balanced content. Plant focuses on enabling Life Groups reproduce organically, making the movement more fluid and dynamic. A significant portion of our time and budget each year is taken up in creating and translating materials (culturally and linguistically) so everyone can be a part of Dignity.

THE DATAAN INVESTMENT OF:$1,000 provides materials and subsidised Bibles for 31 Life Groups$1,565 allows us to translate one resource into another language.

IN 2018 DIGNITY WILL:Spend $25,793 on materials for use within Life Groups, training team members and teaching skills.

THESE MATERIALS WILL:Be be available in up to 6 languages, be supplied to the 228 Life Groups expected to start in 2018,provide ongoing study for the 574 existing Life Groups encouragingthem to plant 115 additional Life Groups organically by 2019.

IN ADDITION:At Each of the 76 Life Group Training Courses our teams will offersubsidised Bibles to the local community in their local language (where available) and in English.

Throughout 2018 and into 2019, the Dignity movement will grow in various ways across rural areas. In many locations a pioneering injection of relationships, training and partnerships are required to kickstart the expansion of the movement. Our bottom line is always to lay the foundations of planting Life Groups, concentrating on the community and spiritual transformation that they bring.

Dignity tends to spread via relationships. Through an initial approach to existing contacts or simply a ‘friend of a friend’ we seek to find the people who are called by God to make a difference in a particular area. On occasion we will identify a partner in the area who can work to introduce us to those people. In some locations there is no church or Christian group that exists, so we use a simple model of presence and visiting, finding the right people and making a start.

Our Intelligence school of rural evangelism and ministry is designed to sensitise and inspire those in a new area to take up the challenge of planting Life Groups. We take Intelligence to people rather than asking them to come to us. We use it as a ‘catch all programme’ to teach the why and the how of Dignity. Once we identify people we spend time getting to know them and training potential team members. This gives a foundation for the work to take root in a new area.

Population growth and a wide diaspora of people coupled with poor resourcing has led to a situation where true Christian community is sparse and lacking in detailed discipleship and transformation. Through pioneering teams and Life Groups we seek to at least in part rectify this.

THE DATAAN INVESTMENT OF:$11,772 will allow us to carry Dignity to a new region.

This money allows us to travel to and stay in the region, identify potential team members, sensitise the community andtrain people to lay afoundation for the future growth of Dignity and the Gospel.

IN 2018 DIGNITY WILL:Spend $29,917 on pioneering Life Groups in 8 new areas focused in4 main regions (West Zambia, Inner Tanzania, Central Namibia and Northern Botswana).

IN EACH REGION:Up to 300 people will be trained at our ‘mobile’ Intelligence school,15%* of those trained will go and attempt to plant Life Groups, and form an Impact Team together. To date, each team that has taken root has gone on to plant an average of 18 Life Groups year on year. 5

GROWING DIGNITY

*Based on training events to date and the number of people that have gone on to demonstrate a long term commitment to the Dignity movement.

Page 8: 2018 Charitable Investment Prospectus USD - Dignitydignityonline.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/2018-Charitable... · Dignity Founder 1 CREATING A LEGACY THE DATA AT THE START

For 10 years Dignity has worked to secure and expand the horizons of the rural church in sub-Saharan Africa. With a social reach of over 30,000 people, discipleship of over 11,000 people and the delivery of hundreds of training and advocacy events, the results speak for us. We know that we have been effective. We want to see more amazing lives and everyday miracles and more growth for God’s Kingdom.

Life Groups, the ‘cells’ of Dignity, are reproducing and growing, with our evangelistic DNA at the heart of them. We want to accelerate growth by sharing our DNA with others and equipping them. We have identified two key steps to achieve this.

Digital Access:  By 2019 we want to provide our materials digitally, making them easily accessible to those in remote locations wherever they are in the world. This will give the opportunity for Life Groups to spread beyond our reach. Many people do not yet have access to digital technologies but the rise of smartphones is changing this and a new window of opportunity is opening to inspire and equip the next generation of Life Group pioneers and community transformers.

Equipping Others: People have remarked that the simple approach of Life Groups could be used in many other areas: India, Scotland, with transient refugee populations to name a few. We envisage a ‘Home Kit’ for those working on home soil to start and multiply Life Groups in their own context and an ‘Away Kit’ that will equip people to share the vision of Life Groups in a mission context. This could be used on short term mission or by other organisations to raise up the people God has placed in an area they are visiting or working in.

THE DATAAN INVESTMENT OF:$6,750 will allow us to build a digital platform for our materials$10,125 will allow us to compile our Home or Away Kit.

IN 2018/2019, DIGNITY WOULD LIKE TO INVEST IN:Digital Access: Step 1 will be to build a digital platform that allows access to audio, video and eBook resources. Step 2 will be to produce our core resources in appropriate formats and publish. From there we can continue to expand our digitally available materials.

Equipping Others: Developing Home and Away Kits is a crucial step for us in encouraging others to pioneer movements in many other contexts across the world. By creating these kits we will be positioning ourselves to partner with, encourage and support pioneers where God has placed them.

An blue sky investment has potential to kick start a whole new movement...

BLUE SKY THINKING

‘We have always sought to create transformation led by God’s people in poor, remote and rural locations around the world. Since the creation of Dignity we have achieved this chiefly in Sub-Saharan Africa. We do not believe our remit ends there though. We will seek out any opportunity to further our mission elsewhere as long as it meets the objectives of transforming remote, poor and rural communities where the church is at its weakest.’
