WELCOME to Fort St. John, BC THE ENERGETIC CITY
Fort St. John is in the heart of the majestic Peace River country and is a great place to visit and play, offering a uniquely
rich concentration of cultural activities and outdoor adventures. Often referred to as “The Serengeti of the North” for being home to some of the best hunting and fishing opportunities in North America. Our city is located at mile 47 on the famous Alaska Highway, which winds it’s way through wilderness connecting Dawson Creek, BC and Fairbanks, Alaska. We are 214 km west of Grande Prairie, AB and 478 km northeast of Prince George, BC. The community is accessible by air (www.fsjairport.com) and bus (www.greyhound.ca). “The Energetic City’ reflects our large
resource base of oil, natural gas, forestry and agriculture as well as the vitality and spirit of our residents. Fort St. John is the largest city in the Northeast region of BC with an approximate population of 21 000 and we support a trading area of more than 69 000 people in the City and outlying service region. Our friendly, small town feel is matched with big city amenities; you will find unique shops throughout the city along with many national chains. The city also features excellent year-round sports facilities. The first documented exploration of this area by the European community was in 1793 when Alexander Mackenzie, traveling by canoe, passed through in search of a route to the Pacific Ocean. Since then, Fort St. John underwent five location
changes to adapt to the needs of a growing community and settled in it’s current location in 1923; it has grown 49% over the last 25 years. The influx in population occurring in the 30’s when the Peace River area was opened to homesteading , the building of the Alaska Highway and in the 50’s when the first oil well was drilled near Fort St. John. Some famous folks from Fort St John include: Denny Morrison (World & Olympic Champion Speed Skater), Andy Copeland (BC Cowboy hall of fame), Jim Hughson (BC Hockey Hall of Fame inductee) http://www.fortstjohn.ca/about-fort-st-john
