When given enough time and space, everyone can learn and succeed. Lifelong learning is what ensues daily at Riverwood. Being in the presence of horses and the farm environment demands that we slow down and pay attention to what is going on around us. The repetitive movement of grooming a horse or taking a walk on a trail provides a trusting place where students can verbalize their challenges and fears as well as their innermost hopes and dreams, without fear of judgement.

The 2018 year provided opportunities of learning to over 746 people in our community. We were honored to begin serving the residents of Horizons Residential Care Facility through visits to their campus in Rural Hall and their visits to the farm. We also welcomed residents from Salemtowne and Arbor Acres Retirement communities and provided therapeutic riding sessions for the Parkinson’s Forward of Forsyth County group. Our partnership with the Centers for Exceptional Children continued and provided over 374 hours of therapeutic riding to 138 students. These students are given this opportunity to build their motor and communication skills from the back of the horse while increasing their social skills. Students who came to us over the summer from Milestones Early Learning found motivation for developing speech and language when talking to their horses from the saddle and in the barn during experiential lessons. In addition, we continued to serve over 70 after-school students who arrived weekly at Riverwood for their lessons. Our students and their horses reached new levels of independence with many transitioning from assisted riding lessons to less assisted or independent lessons. The creation of The Coop has created an environment where students learn important skills through running the store and interacting with customers that will provide them with the platform for gaining meaningful employment as they enter their adult lives. We are honored to share this with our greater community and to provide the opportunity to continue lifelong learning and reaching for the stars.

We continuously learn about our community and the greater needs of all the people who walk through our doors. 24 years and counting, the atmosphere of the farm continues to create opportunities for our staff and students to learn from each other to provide the most supportive and nurturing environment possible. Welcoming new students, new board members, new staff members, and new programs requires that the Riverwood staff and volunteers are always in a learning state of mind. It is one of the things that makes Riverwood a dynamic and unique place in our community. Our doors are always open and we encourage you to visit and experience the magic for yourself.

Gratefully,

The Love of Learning

Our Volunteers Riverwood’s program is made possible by the incredible members of our community who volunteer their time and talent with us each week. From side-walkers and leaders who help in our daily classes and inspire our students, to specialized committees who work on special events and projects for Riverwood, we cannot thank our passionate volunteers enough for all the love they give.

Based on the 2018 national hourly average the value of volunteer time is $24.69. An average of 89 weekly vol-

unteers donated 143,592 hours to Riverwood in 2018, totaling an estimated value of $3,545,286.48.

Our HerdThe average lifespan of a horse, according to the American Association of Equine Practitioners, is approxi-mately 30 years. The combined age of the 18 Riverwood horses is over 330 years! Exceptional care, high quality feed, steady exercise, and an environment focused on well-being is the secret to having a herd who is able to provide hundreds of hours of interaction each month. As of 2018 the Riverwood herd has provided 4,722 total hours of lessons- both riding and ground- and have provided countless opportunities for students, volunteers, and staff to learn, love, and connect. Our horses have a keen way of teaching us every day about things such as presence, honesty, partnership, and attentiveness. The wisdom they offer is full of metaphors for our own way of living and provides lessons that reach far beyond riding.

Karen Porcelli began volunteering at Riverwood in 1997 when there were only a few horses and about 10 riders a week. Karen’s lifelong love of horses and children made volunteering at Riverwood “very appealing”. Having heard about the program at a local elementary school from founder, Susan Hubbard, Karen knew she wanted to visit the farm. During her time at Riverwood, Karen has created hundreds of relationships with students and now, 22 years later, Karen continues to be a committed volunteer who delivers a kind and loving service to our riders and horses each week. When Karen reflects on her time at Riverwood and the importance it plays in the community, she says, “Volunteers are essential to the programs Riverwood offers. For a few hours of volunteer work each week, we see such amazing progress in the students. We all have abilities and the opportunity to help others. Volunteering at Riverwood suits me and the many volunteers who assist there every week. Riverwood has been an important part of my life. It provides an environment of acceptance, encouragement, and positive attitudes. We need more places which offer this type of loving environment in the world.”

Tammy Poindexter started at Riverwood in 2000 as a college graduate returning to her home community in Yadkin County. A friend of hers passed along a newspaper article on Riverwood and she joined as a volunteer shortly after. Tammy’s memories of growing up with horses drove her to seek a place where she could develop a strong bond with a horse, while giving back to the community at the same time. When asked about a favorite memory, Tammy states, “To pick one memory is very hard as there are so many. I worked with one student, Karly, who always made me smile. If there was water involved in the riding lesson, she and I were sure to be wet by the end as we “helped” each other get wet.” Tammy has also worked with hundreds of students over the years, adding that, “I love the excitement that the students bring and seeing them accomplish new things. To see their confidence increase through the sessions and through the years is inspiring.“ Tammy’s advice to those curious about giving their time to Riverwood is, “At Riverwood, you get 10-fold back from your giving. That is why I have continued to give as much as I have because I gain much more than I ever give. That makes me want to continue to give so I can receive the blessings that come from giving.”

If you’ve ever visited Riverwood on a Monday morning, you’ve probably heard the laughter and partnership that takes place in the adult riding class. For many years, this group has been riding together and it has become an integral part of their lives- both socially and recreationally.

One particular student, Hannah Hiatt, has chosen to continue her riding lessons at Riverwood for over 23 years and has come to see Riverwood as a central part of her life. Hannah’s first few years of riding lessons included many sessions focusing on gaining balance, stretching her muscles, and coordinating her movements so she could begin to use her walker and become independently mobile. Later she began to develop the riding skills that taught her to use reins and guide her horse. Fast

forward through the years, through every horse she has ridden, and every offered activity - Hannah is now able to ride independently and has made profound, lifelong relationships at the farm. From the sunny, warm smile she offers to every person she encounters to the positive and uplifting spirit that she demonstrates in any situation, Hannah is unforgettable. She has shared celebrations, achievements, disappointments, and life’s milestones with her Riverwood family and inspires a true sense of the loving kindness that permeates into daily life. Walk On, Hannah!
