The vision of Concordance Academy of Leadership is to be a global leader in understanding justice-involved adults, engaging and teaching them effectively, so they can enhance their faith in God, and develop the leadership traits of strong character, wisdom, service, and skills needed to both: improve the vitality and safety of the community and to have joyful, abundant, and purposeful lives.

Thank you for making 2018 yet another remarkable year for Concordance Academy. Two years ago, we opened our doors to our first class of participants with the ambitious goal of reducing recidivism by 33%. Our dedicated team has done an incredible job perfecting our model while strengthening our programs and services to make this goal a reality.

Throughout 2018 we worked boldly and strategically to reach new milestones as an organization. As you will see highlighted in this report, we continue to strive for excellence in everything we do.

In 2018 we operationalized our innovative workplace simulation model, selected the University of Chicago to measure the effectiveness of our model, and gained new relationships with both the Missouri and Illinois Departments of Corrections. Our core mission remained central, and we continued to surpass our goal of reducing recidivism by 33% amongst our participants.

This 2018 growth and refinement has positioned Concordance for successful expansion in 2019 and beyond.

Concordance is helping St. Louis lead the nation in solving the third largest societal issue of our time once and for all. Our services are not only having a direct impact on the participants we serve, but also their children and families, local communities, and St. Louis as a whole.

Concordance is reducing crime and improving public safety, sourcing thousands of jobs for the most unemployable population, fueling an economic stimulus for our region, and stopping the generational cycle of incarceration – preventing millions of children of incarcerated parents from going to prison themselves. This impact starts with reducing re-incarceration, helping lift the financial burden of incarceration so individuals and their families can live joyful, abundant, and purposeful lives.

Thank you for being a part of the Concordance Academy movement.

There is much more to come in 2019!

GRATEFULLY,

DEAR FRIENDS,

DANNY LUDEMANPresident & CEO

Concordance Academy is unlike any other organization assisting individuals returning from prison. Our 18 month program from pre-release through graduation focuses on three core areas – Behavioral Health & Wellness, Education & Employment, and Community & Life Skills – addressing a multitude of issues through a series of interventions.

OUR SERVICES

Holistic: We deliver an all-encompassing set of in-house services targeting key socio-economic, criminogenic and justice-involvement related factors.

Integrated: We manage the strategic integration of the Academy’s resources and community assets. Plus, we provide a continuity of care from pre-release through post-release.

Evidence-Informed: We employed Washington University’s Brown School to research effective, evidence- and trauma-informed studies that informed the Concordance Re-Entry model.

TIMELINE OF SERVICES

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHTS

Research shows unemployed ex-offenders are three to five times more likely to recidivate than those who are employed. Concordance Academy’s job readiness and employment model aims to reverse those odds. Every other week Concordance hosts a Job Club to discuss issues that arise in the workplace and plan for future career goals.

83% of our par ticipants struggle with substance use issues, often star ting at a very young age. To better serve our par ticipants and the community, we began housing NA/AA meetings at the Academy. On average, we serve 32 participants and eight community members every week.

Her dedication to the program, partnered with her drive to succeed has led her to live an abundant and purposeful life. She has a full-time job at TAGG Logistics through the Concordance Employment Agency, earning a living wage with full benefits.

“Concordance helped me get to where I am today. I don’t know where I would be without the classes and help from my Concordance family. Every time I wanted to give up they kept telling me to believe in myself and to always keep moving forward.”

In 2018 we set out to enroll 250 individuals - with our programming, we have seen a tangible and meaningful impact on those we serve. Of the participants, we served in 2018 we can report:

YEAR IN REVIEW: A LOOK BACK AT 2018

In February, we celebrated a year of progress and learning by recognizing the accomplishments of our program participants and the contributions of the volunteers who support them at our first annual Recognition Event. This event marked the graduation of our Class One participants and featured keynote speaker, Wes Moore.

In April, dozens of team members and participants went to Washington Park Cemetery in Berkeley to clear overgrown landscaping in the area. To give back to the community, our participants completed a combined 400 hours of community service in 2018.

In July, we launched a workplace simulation through the Concordance Employment Agency. Based on data from our first year of operation, we found participants needed a more gradual entrance into the employment market. The Agency has contracted TAGG Logistics and Schnucks to facilitate job simulation and on-the-job training sessions.

Friday night Family Suppers have been a tradition at Concordance since inception. In October, participants and their families gathered at the Academy for our annual “Trunk or Treat” themed Family Supper.

In October, we celebrated our fourth annual gala, “A Hallow’s Eve Ball.” With the support of the St. Louis community, we raised $750,000 for the Academy to continue providing critical re-entry services to our returning citizens and their families.

In December, we celebrated the holiday season with our second annual Affordable Holiday Shopping Event. The event gave our participants the dignifying experience of shopping for their children rather than accepting charity, but at prices they could afford. With the help of the community, we had over 300 toys for Academy participants to purchase.

As of December 31, 2018, we are proud to report the cumulative recidivism statistics for the 262 participants who released from prison:

PLEASE NOTE: Albeit a small sample within a short length of time, the initial indicators of the program show that Concordance Academy programming is working for those participants who are committed to both the pre- and post-release phases. We continue to maintain a reduction in recidivism of our particiants by greater than one-third.
