The Executive Board of the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) welcomes you to the 2018 MCTM Annual Report. Each year’s report is an opportunity to share with our members, friends, and the general public highlights from the year January 1 through December 31. We very much appreciate your time and interest as you review the work and status of the organization.

The Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics is a 501(c)3 organization. We are an IRS-recognized nonprofit organization which may receive tax-deductible donations. A main requirement of such organizations it to meet federal and state filing and reporting requirements, which MCTM fulfills each year. This published annual report provides a context to better understand and reflect on the work of MCTM.

As always, should you have questions, please contact our office at 734.477.0421 or [email protected]. Thank you.

I have the honor and pleasure of welcoming you to our 2018 Annual Report. 2018 began with monitoring legislative action regarding proposed changes to the mathematics portion of the Michigan Merit Curriculum. A bill was introduced that would either eliminate the WorkKeys assessments or make them optional. No resolution was reached by the end of 2018, but the conversation continues into 2019.

Your MCTM Executive Board, with support from many members and other friends of Michigan mathematics education, played key roles in gathering and sharing information pertinent to PreK-College members and audiences. Board members also represented MCTM on various Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and Michigan Association of Intermediate School Administrators –General Education Leadership Network (MAISA GELN) task forces and committees.

President’s Message & Reflections on 2018

This active advocacy and representation was in addition to our daily ongoing efforts in our weekday work settings to support high-quality mathematics teaching and learning for Michigan’s teachers and students. Regardless of high-profile debates and policy-making, the real work of mathematics education takes place in the interactions between each student and his/her teacher as the teacher enables the student to connect with, understand, and apply mathematics.

It is this critical interaction that MCTM strives to support through our conferences and workshops, through our book studies each year, through updating our membership via email and Facebook, by our scholarship programs, and through advocacy at all levels beginning in individual classrooms, continuing through the state and federal levels, as warranted.

President’s Message & Reflections on 2018

MCTM is a true professional organization, not run by a single officer or executive director, but by its Executive Board as elected by its members or as appointed and approved by the Board. Each year, new Board members come onto the Board and others rotate off having fulfilled their terms. Our Executive Director, Chris Berry, carries out much of the day-to-day work of the organization under the direction of the Board. His work, most of it behind the scenes, allows the Board to focus on supporting our members and working for great mathematics education in Michigan.

As president, I very much value each of these dedicated persons’ time and service, their ideas and input, and their willingness to step up and work together to advance mathematics education in Michigan. →

In later pages, you will see a roster of the 2018 Executive Board. I encourage you to express your appreciation to them should you see them at conferences, interact on-line in book studies or webinars, or as you email, text, or call them directly.

If any of us at MCTM could be of service to you or your colleagues, please contact our office. We would be happy to work with you as we collaboratively work to support and improve mathematic teaching and learning in Michigan.

Sincerely,

President’s Message & Reflections on 2018

State-Level Work & Advocacy

• Monitoring 2018 HB 4501 which proposes to eliminate the WorkKeys portion of the Michigan Merit Exam. While many teachers and administrators (and students) find limited value in the WorkKeys assessments, some CTE programs and businesses do find some value. Conversations were still ongoing in December 2018.

• UPDATE: This bill did not pass.

• Math in Transition – State grant funded math summit and work with Charles A. Dana Center for educators in Monroe and Lenawee counties under auspices of Senator Dale Zorn (R – Monroe & Lenawee counties). As work continues, Scott Barnett and Kathy Berry are brining back information to the Board to inform work across the state. Goal of the project is to drastically reduce the number of Michigan high school graduates who are assigned to one or more (up to 5!) remedial math courses at the college level prior to taking their first math course for college credit; failure rates and dropout rates are large.
