Introduction
The Annual Report for 2018 is provided to the community of Annangrove Public School as an account of the school'soperations and achievements throughout the year.
It provides a detailed account of the progress the school has made to provide high quality educational opportunities forall students, as set out in the school plan. It outlines the findings from self–assessment that reflect the impact of keyschool strategies for improved learning and the benefit to all students from the expenditure of resources, including equityfunding.

Message from the Principal
2018 has been a busy year at Annangrove Public School and our students and teachers have enjoyed many rich andrewarding learning experiences. Our focus continues to be providing top quality education for all, whilst developing thewhole child. Staff have attended a wide range of Teacher Professional Learning (TPL) and have planned andimplemented a range of teaching and learning activites which have enabled students to challenge and explore theirthinking. We had an increase in the amount of students participating and achieving outstanding results in the Universityof NSW external competitions. Most students achieved a credit or higher.
Our NAPLAN results in both Years 3 & 5 continue to grow and be significantly above State average, as can be seen onthe 'My Schools' website. As a result of our results our students gain entry into a variety of State, Independent andPrivate schools.
Our school continues to focus on our 'Positive Behaviours for Learners' (PBL) program. This program is highly effectiveas the whole school community consistently works together to implement the behaviour strategies. Parents, staff andstudents work together to uphold our three expectations of Respect, Responsibility and Effort.
Throughout the year our school has had a strong involvement in the Small School's Learning Alliance'. Our school joinswith Arcadia, Middle Dural and Hillside Public Schools to jointly offer opportunities and experiences for our students. In2018 we initiated the first Small Schools Learning Alliance writer's festival and a joint fundraiser with a range of Science,Technology and Maths activites(STEM). These days proved to be an outstanding success for all students, parents, staffand our wider communities.
Our active and supportive parent body worked tirelessly to bring our community together and we see the benefits ofpartnering with parents to ensure our students are reaching their full potential for learning.
I am proud to be the Principal of Annangrove Public School and work with staff who are passionate about their studentsenjoying learning and providing them with opportunites to excel.

Message from the school community
Our aim throughout 2018 was to continue to build on the relationships formed between students, parents and teachers. Asense of belonging is what we have strived to achieve. Consultation with our families has seen us implement changes aswe continue to assess our family's needs.
Our team of volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the year to make our school an inviting and warm environment. Werely on these volunteers to assist us with our fundraising, open days, tours, in class support, canteen, uniform shop, bushcare and many other facets of day to day school operations. Thanks so much to our volunteers. We couldn't have done itwithout your support and hard work.
Fundraising is more than just providing resources for our school. It is also about developing a sense of belonging andworking together for a common goal, not only within the school community, but the surrounding communities as well. Wewill continue to foster new relationships and work with businesses, as local companies and small schools can achieveamazing results together.
Our teachers at Annangrove are beyond amazing. They have a wealth of knowledge, care and compassion towards all ofthe students and go above and beyond to assist all students. They are the driving force behind the amazing results wesee emerging from Annangrove Public School.
Our school Administrative and support staff are the backbone of our school. They are the wheels that keep us movingforward.
Through the events in 2018 our fundraising team managed to raise $9500. The main fundraiser for the year was anObstacool fun day, where we joined with three other local small schools. This was a wonderful day where our studentsand families could meet and enjoy the social interaction.
The P&C decided to start saving funds to put towards creating a new playground installation and upgrade of our presentequipment. This is an ongoing project and we were successful in receiving a Community grant. It is hoped the equipmentwill be installed in 2019.
An important goal of our P&C is to demonstrate to our children that helping others is an important as helping ourselves.The students fundraising efforts in 2018 contributed to Bandaged Bear, Westmead Children's Hospital and Droughtstriken farmers.

Message from the students
2018 School Captains
Being a school captain in 2018 was a wonderful experience.
We feel we represented our peers and led with respect and responsibility.
During the year there were many opportunities for Public Speaking for us, as captains. We presented at many of ourschool events such as the Easter Hat Parade, Book Week Parade, Presentation Day and the Carols Night. It was also ahonour to represent the school and lay a wreath on ANZAC day for the local community Anzac commenorative service.
Year 6 fundraising was always a fun thing to be part of and organising different events was fun and rewading. As well asrunning fundraisers for the school we organised a 'Hero's & Villains' day to raise funds for drought stricken farmers. Weorganised activities for Harmony Day, for all students K–6. We also organised a successful fundraising activitiy to supportWestmed Children's Hospital.
One of the memories I (Isabelle) am most proud of as captain is that I faced my fears and went to leadership camp onmy own. At first it was daunting, but I soon made new friends and got involved with everything and learnt many skills tohelp me along in my leadership role.
We loved our 7 years at Annangrove, and it will always have a special part in our hearts. We will cherish the memoriesand friendships that we have made along the way.

Annangrove Public School provides quality education that engages, motivates and supports all students, to reach theirfull potential as successful learners.
At Annangrove we are dedicated to creating a dynamic and engaging community through collaborative planning, forstudents to be respectful and responsible global citizens for the future.
School context
Annangrove Public School is a semi–rural school located in the Hills Shire. Our school has been delivering qualityeducation for more than 120 years in a unique bush setting.
The school provides an extensive, well–balanced curriculum. There is a high level of expertise amongst educators atAnnangrove Public School and a strong focus on all Key Learning Areas. Students develop the general capabilities, vitalfor their participation as future learners, which include critical and creative thinking and working collaboratively to problemsolve.
The students have access to extra–curricular activities, both in and out of school hours. We celebrate studentachievements through a broad range of school and community events and performances.
The school is well equipped, with the latest technology, that allows teachers and students to access information andmanipulate computer programs that enhance teaching and learning. Students have the opportunity to enjoy flexiblelearning spaces within classrooms that allow them options for maximising their engagement with each other and thecurriculum.
Annangrove is a proud member of the Small Schools' Learning Alliance, (SSLA). This enables staff to share expertiseand resources across schools with similar educational contexts. Students enjoy social, sporting and academic eventswhich lead to lasting friendships and strong bonds, as our students move into High School. Our parents and communitymembers are also part of this Alliance, combining with other P&C's to organise joint fundraisers and social events.
The parents and carers of Annangrove Public School unite with staff in positive partnerships to improve the learningexperiences for their children. An active P&C body exists. Members from all facets of our school community are involvedin key decision making, as valuable contributors in our consultative processes.

This year, our school undertook self–assessment using the School Excellence Framework. The framework supportspublic schools throughout NSW in the pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of high quality practiceacross the three domains of Learning, Teaching and Leading.

Purpose
To ensure all students are motivated to learn, experience success and make progress through learning, that ischallenging and targeted to individual need, and which is situated in authentic and meaningful contexts.
To participate in high quality professional learning, that engages staff in developing evidence based teaching practices,promotes quality teaching and learning programs delivered at a consistently high standard, and develop a collegialculture.
Parents become aware of teaching and learning styles and work collaboratively as partners in their child’s education.

Teachers at Annangrove know their students well and are committed to ensuring all students achieve their potential. Thishas been achieved through creating and maintaining safe, inclusive and challenging learning environments, educationalopportunities for all students have been improved. Students engaged in meaningful learning experiences and work toensure student achievement.
Teachers participate in focused Professional Learning, engaging them in creating positive teaching and learningactivities, differentiating the curriculum and sharing their expertise and knowledge with other staff.
Our students continue to meet and achieve well above school and State benchmarks. This has been clearly reflected inthe high level of achievement in NAPLAN, as well as our school based data over the past several years.

Our school strategic directions and school planwere discussed at several staff meetings andparent forums before the final copy was published.

We actively participated in a joint fundraiser with thefour schools. Principals were successful in gainingsponsorship for this event. All four schools recordedhealthy profits, collectively raising over $10,000jointly.
We planned combined sporting carnivals andinitiated the SSLA Writer's Festival. This event hadvisiting authors and Illustrators working with classesfrom across our SSLA. This event was highlysuccessful and was a productive way of workingtowards achieving our combined target.

Next Steps
To continue to engage with the school community to ensure it has a clear understanding of our strategies and why weimplement the programs that we have in place. We will continue to invite feedback from parents and include them indecision making where possible.
Use a variety of electronic and social media to inform parents and community members , ensuring awareness and activeinvolvement in school activites.
Initiate school and SSLA projects to increase opportunities for community involvement in school programs andbroadening the effectiveness of communication within the wider community.

Management of non-attendance
Students at Annangrove Public School have regularattendance at school. Most students, when absent fromschool return to school with a note from theirparents/caregivers explaining their absence fromschool. Staff are vigilant in ensuring all absences areexplained.
Students who are absent from school for more than twodays are contacted by the school office, requesting anexplanation of absence.

School performance
NAPLAN
In the National Assessment Program, the results acrossthe Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 literacy andnumeracy assessments are reported on a scale fromBand 1 to Band 10. The achievement scalerepresents increasing levels of skillsand understandings demonstrated in theseassessments.
From 2018 to 2020 NAPLAN is moving from a papertest to an online test. Individual schools are migrating tothe online test, with some schools attempting NAPLANon paper and others online.
Results for both online and paper formats are reportedon the same NAPLAN assessment scale. Anycomparison of NAPLAN results – such as comparisonsto previous NAPLAN results or to results for studentswho did the assessment in a different format – shouldtake into consideration the different test formats andare discouraged during these transition years.
Year 3 NAPLAN – Literacy 100% of all Year 3students in Reading achieved the Premier's Prioritytargets. 100 % of all Year 3 students achieved in thetop 2 bands in Spelling and Reading.
Our Year 3 students achieved above State average inall areas. In Grammar and Punctuation our studentsscored 138.2 above State average. In Reading our

Year 5 NAPLAN – Literacy 85.7% of all Year 5students achieved Premier's Priority target in Reading.100% of all Year 5 students achieved in the top threebands in Spelling , Reading , Grammar andPunctuation. Our Year 5 students achieved above Stateaverage in all areas. In Grammar and Punctuation ourstudents scored 70.7 above State average. In Readingour students scored 85.8 above State average. Our school regularly seeks opportunities for feedbackfrom the school community and it ensures that anyfeedback is shared with all key stake holders.
In Literacy, we surveyed parents, students and staffabout our writing programs, especially theimplementation of "Seven Steps to Successful Writing'.Parents felt they had little knowledge of our writingprograms, but had a deeper understanding andknowledge of some components within the program.
Our students have a clear understanding of thecomponents of the writing program. They had anunderstanding of the components , but needed further
teaching and learning activities to embed them intotheir daily writing.
100% of staff agreed their training on 'The Seven Stepsfor Successful Writing' was highly motivating andproductive. They introduced the program into theirclasses and worked through the steps. They allbelieved they would continue to use the program andextend their students knowledge and use of theprogram.

Our school is committed to improving the educationaloutcomes and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander students. Our policy aligns with theDepartment of Education's Aboriginal Education Policy.All programs delivered within the school promote thestudents' understanding of culture and cultural diversity.Our school supports the Aboriginal Education Policyrequirements by utilising targeted funding to engageadditional support staff, developing specific teachingand learning programs and support plans to increasestudent outcomes.
Multicultural and anti-racism education
Our school prides itself on promoting respectfulrelationships and a deep understanding of all citizensbeing part of one world. Our Mulitcultural andAnti–racism policies are based on the Department ofEducation's policies.
Our Harmony Day celebrations are a wonderfulexample of how staff and students join together tocontemplate the notions of peace and harmony andhow they can be achieved in our world. These activitesare organised and planned by our school captains andleadership team. The activities involve all studentsacross our school.
Through our Wellbeing and Discipline policies we havea strong and highly effective PBL (Positive Behavioursfor Learners) which enables our staff to embedanti–racism and build on respect, tolerance andinclusion for all. We have an ARCO staff member whodeals with any racial issues that may arise across our

In 2018, Stages 1 to 3 participated in our PublicSpeaking competition. This is an important element inour school curriculum. Our teachers, parents andstudents all value this program, as it developsconfidence and enhances the students voiceproduction. Throughout 2018 our school offered a wide array ofenrichment activities across the school. Theseincluded: • University of NSW tests • 'Kids teaching Kids' • Junior clubs • Enrichment days • Maths Problem Solving
Our students achieved outstanding results in theUniversity of NSW competitions. A high proportion ofour students scored High Distinctions, Ditinctions andCredits. Wonderful results for our school.
Gardening
2018 was a very productive year for our Year 2 and 3students. In small groups our students prepared gardenbeds ready for planting. Students were amazed at theseedlings raised from tiny seeds. They recorded theamount of water and plant growth and kept detailedplant information and data. The students grew,zucchini, lettuce, tomatoes, beetroot, spinach, snowpeas and pumpkins. They cooked their produce andshared meals with the class. The best crop was ourpumpkins, numbering over fifty. Some of our producewas sold to visitors at our Easter celebrations.
