Introduction

The STORIES consortium partner WRO Hellas is the main entity conducting Educational Robotics

competitions in Greece and South East Europe, as well as the official organizer of World Robot

Olympiad National Finals in Greece. With the volunteering assistance of well-known scientists and

academics, WRO Hellas uses competitions as leverage, with the aim of facilitating the introduction

of STEM and educational robotics to Greece’s national compulsory educational curriculum.

WRO Hellas designed the WRO Primary School Challenge on the subject of “Colonize Mars”, especial-

ly for the purposes of STORIES of Tomorrow. The Challenge was designed as to be integrated in the

Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics, which is a contest that is organized by WRO Hellas on an

annual basis, each year attracting more than 2000 Primary School students, 800 Junior High School

students and 250 Senior High School students. In this way, the STORIES consortium aspired to demon-

strate the potential of the platform’s approach to the wide audience of WRO Hellas’ contests.

The WRO Primary School Challenge has been a 5-months long journey for Greece’s Primary School

students. Its main purposes were to introduce Greek Primary School students and their teachers to

the STORIES storytelling platform, as well as help the Greek primary schools introduce the STEM

education approach into their curriculum, either by enriching their official curriculum or by offering

appropriate after-school activities. For these reasons, throughout the period of M7-M18, WRO Hel-

las planned and implemented the following supporting activities in the framework of the Challenge:

• Workshops, trainings, webinars and one summer school for teachers, on the subject of

STEM and educational robotics

• Presentations and trainings for teachers, on the subject of the STORIES platform specifically

• Donation of educational robotics infrastructure to 40 Greek Primary schools

• Regional Preliminary Challenges in Greece’s 13 regions

• Final Challenge in Athens

• Selection of the best submitted projects with the aim of transforming them into lesson

plans and uploading them on our website, with the aim of making them accessible to

any Greek-speaking teacher that may be interested in introducing educational robotics

activities to their classroom

1. 1st WRO Primary School Challenge

This leaflet summarizes the 1st WRO Primary School Challenge, which started on October

2017, had its Finals on March 4, 2018 and was completed on July 2018. In the framework

of the Challenge, WRO Hellas introduced participant Primary school students, as well as

their teachers, to the STORIES Storytelling Platform, through their participation to “Colo-

nize Mars”, a challenge especially designed for students of 10-12 years.

1.1 The Challenge’s theme: “Colonize Mars”

The WRO Primary School Challenge is a project-based competition. The Challenge invites

students to form teams of 2-6 members and create their own intelligent robotics solution,

relating to the theme “Colonize Mars”.

In the framework of the Challenge, teams are tasked with ideating, building and program-

ming a robotics construction, including modern technology achievements that take into

account Mars’ landscape and particularities.

Throughout the preparation period, students research the laws of physics and the techno-

logical advancements and challenges regarding space exploration, brainstorm, construct

and program, test, improve and test again, until they end up with their final project. On the

days of the contest (first on a regional level and then on the Finals) teams present their final

model and explain its function in detail. The most impressive models are awarded.

Project Description:Our project presents the journey of the inhabitants of

Earth from our planet to the colony on Mars. The jour-

ney begins with the spacecraft, with which the inhabi-

tants of Earth approach Mars. There, a space platform

helps them get off the spacecraft and on the vehicle

that will take them to their final destination, the colony.

The colony is protected by a shield that creates con-

ditions that are similar to those of Earth. At the same

time, it protects people against harmful radiation and

meteor drops.

Project Description:Our project specializes in the production of ragolite for

the construction of residences for the colonists of Mars.

Our robotic construction consists of LEGO bricks and

the electronic components of the LEGO Wedo 2.0 pack-

age. The operation starts with a manual switch that ac-

tivates the loading strap. In the next step, the distance

sensor located in the compression chamber monitors

the filling level of the chamber and when it fills, it dis-

ables the belt. There follows a chain of events such as

the closure of the compression lid, the compression of

the ragolite for it to be solidified, and the firing of the

ragolite with laser for it to harden. When the ragolite is

ready, the robotic mechanism undertakes its remov-

al from the production platform and its transfer to the

lava stool. This transfer is executed by a distance sen-

sor that controls the output belt ‘s exit and activates

an automatic rover that transfers the building material.

1. Overview of total participation

In total, 40 schools expressed interest and were selected for participation in the STORIES

platform, receiving 40 sets of educational robotics infrastructure respectively, as a reward.

From the total 40 schools, 32 schools participated actively in the trainings that were or-

ganized in the framework of the Challenge and formed teams of 2-6 students who were

registered in the STORIES platform. Overall, 28 schools participated in the 1st WRO Primary

School Challenge. Among them, 64 registered students from 15 schools actively interacted

with the platform and created stories in the framework of the Challenge, as shown in table 7.

In the framework of the 1st WRO Primary School Challenge with the subject “Colonize Mars”,

the STORIES teams were invited to visualize and present their robotics projects, using the

STORIES storytelling platform. More in particular, teams were asked to create two episodes

in the STORIES platform: On the 1st episode, which would be entitled “Before Mars”, they

would describe their ideation process, i.e. the forming of their team, the delegation of roles,

the research of the bibliography and the brainstorming process which lead them to their

final concept. On the 2nd episode, which would be entitled “On Mars”, participating teams

would visualize how their robotics structure would actually work, when on Mars.

Project Description:Our project focuses on an interplanetary journey from

the planet Earth to the part of Mars that has already

been terraformed. Our project records the landing of the

“legovo” space capsule, on one of the special voyager

landing sites that have been built on Mars, as a result of

the collaboration between NASA and Arab investors.

Inside the capsule there are some visitors from Earth who

wish to stay on Mars for a few days in order to tour and

see some of the planet’s attractions, such as the largest

mountain of our solar system. During the flight, the

passengers travel in comfort inside the capsule, as if they

were travelling on an airplane. When the capsule lands,

passengers enter a special vehicle that is already inside

the capsule, with the aim of ensuring that their exit from the

capsule is safe and smooth. For this idea we were inspired

from similar vehicles we have seen in movies, such as Star

Trek. Lastly, when the vehicle exits from the capsule, it will

take visitors to the dropping dock, where they will take the

bus, which will take them to their place of residence.

Project Description:We are in the southern hemisphere of planet Mars in

the year 2110, when the first communion efforts have

already begun. Our goal is to transfer the astronauts

who work there to the specially designed colonies with

the help of a train, called “the 10th Express”. These

colonies simulate the atmosphere on the planet Earth.

Our train runs the route between these 3 colonies

continuously, waiting for 5 seconds at each stop. If a

meteorite is found on the train rails, our train is switched

off and a relevant message plays.

Project Description:We are on the planet Mars in the year 2025 and we are

members of the first mission sent to inhabit Mars. The

conditions we have to deal with are very difficult, but we

do not give up.

It’s already been a month since we first got on Mars and we

have managed to build a safe and comfortable base, but we

are slowly starting to run low on food supplies. If we want to

survive we have to cultivate our food. To do this, we make

Mars’ first greenhouse to cultivate sludge, sandwiches and

walnut lettuce! The main problem we had to deal with has

been the great cold that prevails when the night falls (our

thermometers show minus 80 Celsius degrees) because

at this time our plants can freeze and destroy. Fortunately,

we thought of a solution: to cover our greenhouse with a

special heating material at night and uncover it during the

day. This material is hard enough to protect our greenhouse

and meteorites that sometimes fall on the surface of the

planet. Another key element for our survival is energy. The

only available source of energy is the sun. For this purpose,

we have solar panels that follow the sun’s motion so that

they have maximum efficiency!

Project Description:Above all, the first arriving people on Mars should

respect the planet and its environment. We should not

repeat the mistakes that have led to the destruction of

Earth’s natural environment. In our project, our team

has reached Mars. With the special vehicle we were

carrying with us from Earth, we drive to the surface of

the planet, searching for Arians and warning them of the

possible problems people can create. As we know that

there are no intelligent beings on the planet Mars, our

automation has symbolic meaning. With it we want to

emphasize the importance of environmental education

and the consciousness that people need to acquire not

only as inhabitants of the planet Mars, but also as future

inhabitants of other planets. The second automation

uses a tilt sensor that is activated when a small Marian

vehicle passes the entrance of the Planet Headquarters

and tilts. This event triggers the reproduction of a

message according to which the passengers on the

Martian vehicle announce the arrival of the Greek

mission on their planet. This automation also has a

symbolic meaning for the project. Our homeland can

contribute to space research. Greek scientists who will

work in space research and the settlement on Mars, in a

few years, may be now pupils of our school!

Project Description:The wind is one of the most powerful forces that shape

the surface of Mars today. We tried to solve the problem

of the winds that prevail on Mars surface (maximum

at about 160 km / h) and create huge sandstorms

that can last even for weeks. Our construction is an

“intelligent” warning machine for Mars colonists that

blocks the sandstorm. Initially, special microphones

detect the sandstorm at its creation, resulting in a red

warning light for the colony residents. Then, depending

on the direction and rotation of the sandstorm, a special

machine is automatically switched on and eliminates

the storm, protecting the inhabitants of the colony.

Project Description:Our team believes that oxygen is the most useful of

all the materials that will be needed by the first Mars

settlers to spread rapidly to the planet. Since massive

transfer of oxygen from one part of the planet to another

would be costly, we gave a solution by creating a robotic

gardener. This robot, which is equipped with distance

sensors and with a gyroscope, observes the plants and

oversees the space. Since fruiting is an integral part of

the life cycle of some plants, we also provided our robot

with a mechanism that informs us about the ripening

of the fruits.

Project Description:Our team began the research on Mars and the plans of

space agencies in America and Europe. We visited the

corresponding websites as well as physics4you and we

read about Mars. Based on our research we prepared

some relevant presentations that we all gathered

together. After studying them, we decided to send robots

to Mars, to prepare for the colonization of the planet.

Then we let our imagination travel with us to the now-

populated Mars! The goal of the robot we finally built is

to clean a particular surface of stones. The surface is

delimited by a black periphery, which is part of a larger

worksite and other robots. Our robot goes forward and

changes direction by twisting. For turning it can use

the distance sensor and / or the tilt sensor for use on

non-delimited surfaces! Μechanics-wise, we based our

robot on that of a previous mission (NASA) because

it had guaranteed behavior and we did not have time

to experiment! We have adapted its capabilities to our

needs, and, so far, its results have been satisfactory.

Project Description:We are in Mars in the year 2042. Our mission is to

carry out some scientific research and measurements.

This is the second manned mission to the planet after

Mars 1 in 2024. While we have managed to overcome

some difficult problems, such as the lack of oxygen on

the surface of the planet, or that there is no water in

liquid form and that atmospheric pressure is different

from that of Earth’s surface, one problem that remains

unsolved is the extremely destructive windstorms

that hit and sweep Mars every year. Our idea is that

of a vehicle on the surface of Mars, which detects

sandstorms in time -if they break out- and takes some

self-protection measures. After sending out an alert, the

vehicle, which will have a series of automations, should

be able to be quickly inserted into the base, and then

the door should automatically close behind it, in order

to prevent its destruction.
