Welcome Class of 2019!

Everyone wants to be the best. So it has been with every Leadership Memphis class for

the past 40 years. No doubt about it. You were part of the Best Class Ever. But then, you

already knew that. You also know a city is only as strong as its community leaders. And

that we must constantly endeavor to make Memphis a better place by supporting the

development of more community leaders. Join us as we embrace on the next 40 years!

Daphene R. McFerren (Executive Class of 2010, FastTrack Class of 2008)Executive DirectorBenjamin L. Hooks Institute for Social Change at the University of Memphis

New to Memphis and new in her role as the executive director of a nonprofit, Daphene was provided an in-depth understanding of Memphis’ assets and challenges through the Fast Track and Executive Programs of Leadership Memphis. She also made professional contacts and personal friends, some of whom have played an integral role in providing outstanding board leadership or services to her organization.

Rajon Blanding (Executive Class of 2017)Sr. Director, Patient Access, Express Scripts

Rajon moved to Memphis from New Jersey to run Express Scripts. As part of the Executive Class of 2017 he spent time in Frayser and at Trezevant High School. One

day, Rajon returned to work and asked his team to analyze how many of their 1600 employees lived in under-served neighborhoods. Turns out it was 60%. Under Rajon’s direction, Express Scripts made changes in their employee engagement, such as allowing the PTO policy to be more broadly interpreted so employees could be more available to participate in their kid’s schools, provides on-site third-party Guidance Resources, and no-charge Pharmacy Technician certification training. Chalk that win up for parental engagement.

Ron Wade (FastTrack Fall 2008 & Criminal/Juvenile Justice Program 2015)Executive Director, Hope Works

Ron is the Executive Director of Hope Works. He participated in the first LM Justice Program offered in conjunction with

the American Leadership Forum. In partnership with the late Director Bill Gupton, head of Shelby County Corrections, they instituted a GED program for currently incarcerated individuals, instead of waiting to do GED training upon release. The number of GEDs increased from 70 to more than 550 annually in just three years.

Ekundayo (Hattilloo Theatre), Mauricio Calvo (Latino Memphis) and Marlon Foster (Knowledge Quest) will tell you when they participated in Leadership Memphis they were fairly young in their tenure’s as heads of their nonprofit organizations. They will also share with you that their LM experience proved to be pivotal in their development as a community leader – and their ability to interact with peers in the business, government, and education sectors – thereby contributing to their success as nonprofit executive directors.

Alvis Otero (Executive Class of 2015)International Development Liaison, ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Alvis was able to use the network of the Leadership Memphis Executive Class to expand her horizons and volunteer more in

Memphis. Alvis met Executives from The Church Health Center and Clean Memphis, which led to her and her family participating in many volunteering opportunities with those organizations. Also, Alvis was able to meet the Director of General Services for the City of Memphis and made partnerships with the Hispanic community and the City of Memphis to create partnerships that would have a positive impact in both the city and community at large.

Leadership Memphis ImpactMany people year in and year out ask the question, “What does Leadership Memphis do?” The immediate answer is “We prepare and mobilize leaders to work together for the good of the whole community”. That is our mission statement. But the words don’t fully explain what LM does as an organization, and how what we do is transmitted through our alumni into community actions large and small. And wouldn’t you know

it – many more actions than we’ll ever know about.

The deeper answer to that question lies in our alumni. In you. You are the Leadership Memphis impact.

Here are a few examples illustrating what your fellow alums are doing – as a result of their Leadership Memphis experience. It’s just a small sample, mind you. After all, we have more than 4,000 alumni. That

means there are more than 4,000 stories. Check these out. We’d also love to know your story. Please share yours with us at [email protected].
