2018-2019 ANNUAL REPORT JUNE 30, 2019

Duquesne University

School of Nursing

Alumni Association

2018-2019 has been a productive year!

We are pleased to present the 2018-2019 Duquesne University School of Nursing Alumni Association Annual Report. Our goal is to provide high quality volunteer services to the School of Nursing and its alumni. Please take a few minutes to read our Annual Report and review the progress we have made. We welcomed Aimee McBroom Harris and Joshua Kohl to our Alumni Association Board. This year our enthusiastic board of 15 members, who have generously donated time, raffle baskets, table decorations and energy to DU Nursing Alumni and on campus events, have met six times. We have attended and supported programs hosted by DU student nurses, DUSNA, ATD, nursing alumni and nursing faculty. The Alumni Association fulfilled the funding for the $50,000 DU SON Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship Fund. Duquesne nursing student Daniela Chandler received the first scholarship allotment. Our Alumni By-Laws are now updated and available upon request. We hosted our Annual Homecoming Champagne Brunch for 81 Nursing Alumni. I wrote an article, “Growing through Nursing” for The Scope and was interviewed and featured in an article called “Alumni Association President Terri Tunick Shares Her Vision for the Future” for the DU Nursing Magazine. Both articles received positive reviews. We want to hear the latest about your lives and careers, and keep you updated with exciting news and happenings on campus. To provide the updated information related to your mailings, email addresses, jobs and more, please visit myduquesne.duq.edu/infoupdate. To submit updates related to Alumni news (marriage, births, promotions, in memoriam) please email [email protected]. The Alumni Engagement office coordinates mailings and maintains record updates for all university communications and celebrations. Thank you for your support, loyalty and commitment. We warmly welcome you to attend our upcoming DU Nursing events. Sincerely, Terri Tunick, RN, MSN, N’99 President, DU SON Alumni Association [email protected]

Patricia Schlicht Endowed Nursing Scholarship

In honor of Patricia Schlicht, who lost her battle with cancer on April 7, 2019, the Patricia Schlicht Endowed Scholarship was created. Patricia (Patty) was the quintessential embodiment of a Duquesne University Nursing Alumni. She served over 10 years on the Duquesne University Nursing Alumni Association Board and Board of Governors. Patty delved into projects with enthusiasm, and worked tirelessly to promote the success of the Alumni Association. She regularly attended Alumni Homecoming Champagne Brunches, fund raising dinners, nursing graduations and networking events. Patty served to develop the minds, hearts and spirits of nursing students and alumni.

Patty’s legacy is to become involved, fight for what you believe in and never give up. To make a donation in support of the Patricia Schlicht Endowed Scholarship, visit the Nursing Alumni Association online.

Alice C. Feehan Nursing Scholarship

At their 50-year reunion in the fall of 2018, graduates of Duquesne’s School of Nursing class of 1968 decided to establish a Student Nurse Resource Fund in the name of Professor Alice C. Feehan.

Professor Feehan, N’41, GN’45, was a nursing faculty member

for 35 years. Many remember her because as Director of the

Basic Nursing Program and Associate Professor of Nursing

Education she probably interacted with every basic student

enrolled between 1942 and 1977. Several of her former

students had fond memories of her kindness, generosity and

offers of help in times of trouble or need.

The scholarship fund will provide the Duquesne School of Nursing Dean with the means to offer

financial assistance to a student for non-tuition expenses such as textbooks, lab fees,

transportation and other expenses that might not otherwise be available. Even students who

have received scholarships often need help with other necessities and ancillary expenses. The

required $25,000 minimum required to establish the fund has almost been met and it is hoped

that there are other Duquesne School of Nursing graduates who will want to contribute to the

fund in remembrance of Professor Feehan or to help future nursing students at our treasured

alma mater. If you would like to donate, please contact Adam Novak in Duquesne University’s

Office of University Advancement at [email protected] or 412.396.2600.

Sister Louise Grundish Distinguished Nursing Alumni Awards

An Evening of Giving Back

On March 25, 2018 Abbey Whitewood, Ysabelle Katigbak, Marlana Werderber, Cassidy Handler, Katherine Kocsis and Terri Tunick made a delicious dinner of Mexican chicken, green beans, rice and store bought pastries for the children and families of the Ronald McDonald House of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Abbey, event chair of DUSNA, organized the entire evening. We served approximately 40 people. It was wonderful to see children and families enjoy a home cooked meal.

School of Nursing Alumni Association Jewelry

In 2012, Leah Cunningham presented the idea of selling Alumni jewelry as a fund raising method. Leah contacted an artist and eight items (silver bead, dove charm, nursing cap charm, Christmas ornaments, key fob, glass jewelry beads, book markers and wine stoppers) were designed and custom made. To date, total jewelry sales are $14,425.00 and profit is $7,535.00. Please visit the Alumni site to purchase our jewelry on-line and support our association.
