BUDGET & FINANCIALS

During the academic year of 2018-2019, OSU’s EERI chapter relied on several sources of funding subdivided in

three categories (1) accumulated funds from the chapter’s previous funding, (2) fundraising events, and (3)

donations. The OSU’s EERI chapter retained around $400 from Oregon State University from the last time the

chapter was active, which was in 2014. The chapter obtained funds from hosting fundraising events including a

SAP2000 training workshop in which students and local industry professionals paid attendance fees, a yoga

class where all ticket proceeds went to our chapter, and an event coordinated with a local restaurant where

we received a portion of their proceeds for a day. The third category in which the chapter obtained funds is

through donations from industry professionals when hosted by our local chapter on campus. The table below

shows a detailed list of funding sources obtained this year. Additionally, our chapter coordinated with other civil

engineering organizations at Oregon State University to reduce costs of events.

Source of Funding Type Amount OSU - Student Leadership & Involvement School Funding $400.00 SAP2000 Training Workshop Sponsored Event $500.00 Yoga Session Sponsored Event $60.00 Cheesy Stuffed Restaurant Fundraiser Sponsored Event $45.00 PCS Structural Donation $108.00 Degenkolb Engineers Donation $360.00

Total $1473.00

The table below shows a list of organizations which have provided financial donations to the chapter. In

addition to the financial donations in the table below, Computers and Structures, Inc. provided time and

materials for the SAP2000 training free of charge to the chapter.

CHAPTER ACTIVITIES

LEADERSHIP MEETINGS

The leadership team of our local chapter meets 2-4 times per term for approximately an hour and half to

discuss pertinent information regarding our organization of public events, coordination with other organizations,

brain storm ideas for future events, and general updates on ongoing work.

GENERAL CHAPTER MEETINGS

Once a term the Oregon State University chapter of EERI holds a general meeting that runs for two hours.

During general meetings we restate our mission as a chapter, summarize work done in the past term, goals for

the next term, sponsor a dinner for attendees, and host 3-4 local speakers with research relevant to earthquake

engineering. The number of attendees averages 25 individuals.

FRIEDMAN FAMILY VISITING PROFESSIONAL or DISTINGUISHED LECTU RE VISIT

The chapter was matched with John Hooper, an engineer with Magnusson Klemencic Associates and more

than 30 years of experience in his field. For Hooper’s lecture, the primary topic covered was the addition of a

new mixed-use 58-story tower to Rainier Square in Seattle, Washington. Within the discussion of the tower,

Hooper covered the approval process from both academia and industry, implementation of a new concrete-

steel composite core wall referred to as a “sandwich panel system”, as well as the major challenges of the

process of design and construction. In addition to the presentation, the chapter coordinated an entire day of

activities for Hooper. Including faculty meetings, a tour of Oregon State’s wave research facility, a lunch with

undergraduates, and coffee with the local chapter leadership team.

Education Outreach

Community engagement was a priority of our organization this year. Events that we hosted or participated in

that were open and a benefit to the public were our CSI Sap 2000 software training, Boomilever Competition,

and the Engineering Exposition. The CSI SAP 2000 training was a full day software boot camp taught by an

employee of CSI. Industry professionals and students alike were invited. The Boomilever Competition is a

Science Olympiad that all of our local middle schools compete in. Our involvement in this competition was

volunteer work and mentorship of competing teams. The Engineering Exposition is a yearly event put on by the

College of Engineering at Oregon State University hosting researchers from across engineering disciplines to

present their work at a daylong event. All local K-12 schools come on a field trip to learn about current

engineering research. Our team had a booth where we tested a structure on a shake table, handed out

brochures, handed out merchandise, and inspire passion in our community’s youth for earthquake engineering.

Speaker meetings

As part of our mission we hope to inspire interest in earthquake engineering by educating our student body. This

year we hosted a total of 7 formal speaker meetings including Ben Mason, Armin Stuedlein, John Hooper, Cale

Ash, Jeff Klein, Mike Olsen, and Alycia Good. In addition we hosted general meetings each term where we had

3-4 graduate students or faculty members give brief presentations on their pertinent research. Dinner is

provided at all events for attendees which average 25 individuals.

SEISMIC DESIGN COMPETITION TEAM

This was our first year as an organization. We were unable to send a team to the national competition.

However, in the spring of this year we made an effort to prepare a team for the competition next year. Six

people have been recruited and organized for participation.
