It’s time for a mindset change:

CBB GovernorMohammed Zafran/[email protected]

Manama

The society needs to change its mindset on government

subsidies, said Central Bank of Bahrain (CBB) governor Rasheed Mohamed Al Maraj yesterday.

“People should worry less about removal of government subsidies and think more about participating in the global technological revolution,” he added.

The CBB governor was speaking at ‘Policy Hack’, an event organized by C5 Accelerate in partnership with Tamkeen. Hadyah Fathalla, Executive Director of C5 Accelerate was the host of the event.

“The society is stressing the wrong problems,” said Al Maraj, as he urged technoprenuers, finance professionals and the business community to make their voices heard.

He said that the society

as a whole have been lost in discussions about government welfare programmes such as the government housing, removal of subsidies while discussions about Fintech, Artificial Intelligence and the

like are not in the limelight. “Right now our discussions

as a society have been dominated by the day to day issues such as housing, electricity subsidy and such things. The main challenge to

face the Arab world will be Artificial Intelligence. Are we prepared for this? “ the CBB Governer asked.

“When there are advancements in AI and robotics and biotechnology and so forth how are we going to cope with this. These are the things that I wish to talk about. But instead we have had to prioritize on issues that has a much smaller impact,” he said.

He also encouraged banks to listen more to the customers and adapt to new technologies.

“Bahrain can adapt to changes very quickly, we are at heart liberal. We are an open society that has ability to mix with different groups of people and be dynamic. The banking system should reflect this. Currently the bank dictates the products, and the customer needs to pick whatever is available. This mindset is a roadblock, instead banks need to listen to the customers more and have solutions according to their needs,” he said.

The society is lost in discussions about removal of subsidies while

discussions about Fintech, Artificial Intelligence and the like are not in

the limelight, says CBB chief

The University of Bahrain has made

significant strides after it began implementing the five-year Transformation Plan beginning 2016, UoB President Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah told DT News in an exclusive conversation on the sidelines of the 8th QS-MAPLE Annual Strategic Summit for the Advancement of University Excellence.

Immense progress has been made in the past two years with improving the registration system for students, launching a new culture of research and new academic programs tailored to the needs of the

labour market. With a focus on entrepreneurship opportunities, UoB students are participating in the ongoing Startup Bahrain Week activities.

“We are working with some of the leading universities in the world and our students are the number one choice for employers says Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah while explaining how far the University has come in its pursuit of the Transformation Plan targeting 2021. He said the university saw record enrolment in 2017.

“Next week, we start a new program with UNDP to train female computer programmers,” the UoB President DT News.

In the coming months,

UoB is planning to host two research events with the Oxford University and Loughborough University on water security and renewable energy respectively.

UoB’s Unit for Teaching Excellence and Leadership (UTEL) became the first institution in the region to become a global partner with the Higher Education Academy in UK, aimed faculty development programs within UoB and other a universities in Bahrain. Prof. Riyad Yousif Hamzah said that the UoB co-hosting the QS-MAPLE education shows how far the higher education sector in the country has developed. “It is a significant boost for the country and the economy,’’ he added.

The increase in the number of students poses new

challenges in the higher education sector, it was observed at the eighth edition of the QS MAPLE education summit, which focuses on excellence in university education. The summit is held in Bahrain for the first time.

“We need to ensure the university is prepared for this rise in demand,’’ the CEO of Quality Assurance Authority for Education and Training, Dr Jawaher S. Al-Mudhahki said at the event. While there are challenges, the increase in the number of students is a healthy indication, she added. From 13mn students in 1960 to 262 million in 2012, the global demand for higher education has risen

and is expected to double by 2025. She also stressed on the importance of evaluating private providers of higher education. “30% of students around the world are educated in private institutions’’ she said. To ensure universities are capable of evolving effectively,

excellence in quality assurance, accreditation and ranking has to be ensured.

As the future will be dominated by technology, the education community should be prepared and special attention should be given for the development of education and training . “It is a good thing, but also a bad thing,’’ said Dr Al-Mudhahki. “Our life is attached to technology, we cannot live without it,’’ she said. Inconsistent teaching methods, mismatch in skills learned and labour market needs, dropout rates and ill-adapted programmes are among the challenges in higher education. The United Nations Sustainable Deployment Goals for 2030 also focuses on ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education. “We need to collective work towards achieving this,’’ said Dr Jawaher S. Al-Mudhahki.

A group of art lovers have launched a campaign

to save Al Riwaq Art Space at Adliya, which is being vacated to make way for a new restaurant. Al Riwaq was a platform for artists and art enthusiasts for the exchange of dialogue and exhibition of art works. It was started to support and promote art and to provide a space for emerging and established artists, both

local and international. With the owner of the building now planning to close it down to facilitate a restaurant, a campaign #protectalriwaq has been launched on the social media. A meeting has been called on March 11 at the Al Riwaq where people who have been a part of the art space will gather to discuss the issue.

“Yes, it is true that art space is being shut as the lease of the contract is over and the owner now wants to build a restaurant there,” an employee of Al Riwaq Art Space said.

The issue has created a rage on social media with art enthusiasts tweeting @Sehamness: “Feed craving minds & souls rather than full stomachs #ProtectAlriwaq”.

“Al Riwaq is one of few art spaces in Bahrain, shutting it down would hurt young artists and creators, we don’t need more restaurants. #ProtectAlriwaq” @DigitalAbdullah tweeted.

“As a Bahrain based architect studio we stand to #ProtectAlriwaq” @MPintoBarbosaCo tweeted.

American Mission opens clinic for low-income groupHarpreet Kaur/[email protected]

Manama

The American Mission Hospital (AMH) has

opened a new refurbished ‘Zwemer Clinic’ to provide high-quality medical care to the low-income group at affordable rates.

The clinic was inaugurated by Shaikh Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa, Governor of the Capital Governorate, and Justin Siberell, US Ambassador to the Kingdom yesterday. The board members and several distinguished guests attended the event.

“I am extremely honoured to be a part of the opening of the Zwemer Clinic. AMH over the years has played a vital role in strengthening the Bahraini and the American community. Further, the launching of this clinic is a reaffirmation of the

beginning itself, which was to serve the people. I commend the board members and thank the Government and the Royal Family for all the support they have provided over the years to keep the hospital running. We are looking forward to expanding ties between the two countries and we are very

excited to celebrate the effort and be a part of the long legacy and tradition between the two countries,” said Siberell.

“The AMH has been a part of our culture and we are glad to be a part of the opening of the clinic. We believe it will do a lot to help the community and serve the needy, which is

a part of our culture here in Bahrain and wish the board members all the success in their new ventures and projects to serve Bahrain and it’s people,” said the Governor.

“The opening of the clinic was to honour Samuel Marinus Zwemer’s legacy of service to the people of Bahrain. The 1926

building has been refurbished and dedicated as the ‘Zwemer Clinic’ in the main hospital in Manama, to its sole purpose to serve the low-income people of Manama who seek care at AMH by providing affordable high-quality medical care,” said George Cheriyan, Chief Medical Officer at AMH.

The clinic is a tribute to the compassion of the founding missionaries who were instrumental in laying the foundation of modern healthcare in Bahrain.

Samuel Zwemer stopped-over in Bahrain frequently during his tours of Arabia, and which led to the opening of a medical dispensary in the Old Souk in 1893.

The desire to serve the people of the Kingdom by providing them with modern medical care led to the dedication of the Mason Memorial Hospital.

The Mason Memorial Hospital transitioned into what is now the American Mission Hospital which aims to provide quality, affordable medical services to all who seek our care, to carefully manage the process by which quality care is delivered, and to embody the Biblical principles of grace, truth and love.

Awareness drive on cyber security, cyber-bullying DT News [email protected]

Manama

Kaspersky Lab and the T e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s

Regulatory Authority (TRA) yesterday announced the beginning of a series of roadshows to spread awareness among students about the threat of cyber-security and cyber-bullying. The roadshows will take place in schools across Bahrain and is aimed at raising awareness about the threats that await children on the Internet and effective ways to respond to them. Among the main threats to be addressed are cyber-bullying, inordinate disclosure of personal information and general rules of online behaviour.

According to a survey conducted by The T e l e c o m m u n i c a t i o n s Regulatory Authority, about 38% of young people in Bahrain have faced cyberbullying, which represents the biggest cyber threat to young people in the region. The second most worrying problem is the danger associated with meeting strangers online. The percentage of such encounters has significantly dropped, however it remains at 16%.

“There has never been a more important time to truly educate children about online safety and the dangers of the online world than now.” said TRA Senior Advisor of Consumer Affairs Development, Sheikh Abdulla Bin Humood Al Khalifa. “Our connected lifestyles have given room for a lot of dangers out there, and we are very happy to collaborate with Kaspersky Lab and bring the Safe Kids cybersecurity roadshow to children across schools in Bahrain. Cyberbullying in particular comes with dangerous and far-reaching implications which could impact our children’s academic performances and overall well-being. Children are the future of our society. Empowering them and giving them the intellectual tools to survive in a digital world is our

prime responsibility.” he said.Amir Kanaan, Managing

Director in the Middle East, Turkey and South Africa at Kaspersky Lab, said “Children’s safety is one of the key priorities of Kaspersky Lab as a cybersecurity company. Firstly, because family well-being is something everyone is concerned about, regardless of status and origin. And secondly, only by instilling the basic principles of safe behavior online in the children of today we can make the Internet of tomorrow safer — and this, of course, is one of the main goals of our company. It is almost impossible to reach this goal without the support of governments and public organizations, so we are very glad and grateful to TRA for supporting our initiative”.

Maria Namestnikova, Children’s online safety expert at Kaspersky Lab said: “Online communication may seem like a safe environment, as a certain distance is maintained between both sides. But, this environment has now reached such a scale and diversity, that its dangers are almost identical to those of the real world — sometimes it is not entirely clear which world is more real.”

The roadshow will continue

until March 13 and will target

children between the age of 7

to 13

Many Educationalists feel that India has no education system but only

examination system. Overemphasis on marks and its importance in securing admission in universities proves it. Today, when our children are going to write their Board and School Exam, we need to offer our best services and support apart from our best wishes and prayers. My suggestions would be as follows :

Few Days Before the Examination :1. Stay away from all the distractions

especially Social Media.2. Pray and keep yourself in good

health.3. Don’t try anything new. Focus on

revising what you have done.4. While revising use your

photographic memory. Read, close your eyes and recall what you read and then write.

5. You may not get enough time to write all the questions. In that case after recalling and framing the answer just speak. If parents are around ask them to listen to your answer for cross checking.

6. Use previous year’s papers for practice and cross check for correct answer.

On the Eve of the Examination Days:1. Follow the routine which you have

been following and that which makes you comfortable and relaxed.

2. Use maximum time in recalling the concepts and answer.

3. Make sure that admit card and required items are arranged at one place.

4. Pray and have a good night sleep.

On the Day of Examination:1. Try to get up early and if time

permits recall the answers again.2. Have the breakfast you like and

leave for the examination Centre before time. Make sure you carry admit card and all necessary items.

3. If you are sensitive stay away from any conversation at the examination centre.

4. Pray and think that only what you have prepared is going to be asked in the examination. Nothing, which you left, will be asked.

5. Follow the instructions of the teachers and make sure that the table and chair allocated to you is of proper height and is in good condition. If not, please report to the teachers on duty.

While you get the Answer Sheet:1. Make sure that all the entries on

the cover page are done correctly. Cross check.

2. Use only the specified colour pen blue /black.

After you get question paper:

1. Count the number of pages, cross check and read it word by word. You get 15 minutes for it.

2. Except your Roll No., don’t write anything on it.

3. You may use pencil to underline the key words of the questions.

4. After reading the questions if you find that you don’t know some of the answers don’t panic. Try to focus on the ones you know and plan whether to start from the last or the first question.

After you get instructions to write :1. Begin with either from the last or

from the first question. But, always follow the order.

2. Leave a line after every answer and draw a line at the end of every answer. Number the answers correctly on the left margin.

3. Keep in mind that presentation matters a lot. Don’t overwrite. In case of mistake just put a cross and write again. Diagrams should be neat and well labelled.

4. Keep a watch on time spent. If you get stuck, try to recall but don’t spend much time. Shift to the next question and revisit the previous question once you complete the ones you know.

5. Don’t write more. Write as per the instructions given in the question paper. For one markers usually one sentence / line is enough. Each one marker usually takes one to two minutes and five markers take around 12minutes each.

6. Keeping an eye of time will avoid any panic situation.

7. While writing answers you may underline key words. It attracts evaluators’ attention and takes less time to correct the paper. But use the same pen for underlining. Don’t waste time in picking up another colour pen for underlining.

8. Some students have the habit of underlining after they finish the paper and revise it. In that case you can use contrast colour pen. But, never use red or green. These two colours are used by the evaluators and Head Examiners.

9. In case you have taken additional answer sheet, number it properly. Write the total number of such sheets and write the number in the space provided on the main answer sheet and then tie it properly.

10. Give a pleasant kiss, pray and say good bye to the answer sheet, before it is collected by the invigilator.

11. Don’t discuss the answers if you have other papers lying ahead.

Just Relax- You have done a great job!May God Bless You!With lots of Love and Blessings

Experts say freshers should have career

objective on CVBayt.com provides insights into what the perfect CV should

look like for a fresh grad

Manama

‘The Perfect Fresh Graduate CV in the

Middle East’ poll, conducted by Bayt.com, the Middle East’s leading Job Site, revealed a variety of insights about the content, structure, and components that make the ideal fresh graduate CV for getting hired today. According to the survey, a large majority (89 per cent) of respondents believe it is important to have a career objective on a fresh graduate’s CV. However, content-wise, the most difficult part of the CV for fresh graduates is also, reportedly, writing the career objective.

When it came to getting their CVs seen by employers, the majority of respondents (86.3pc) say the best way to do so is by ‘maintaining an active and complete online profile’ on job sites. Less than 1 in 10 respondents (8.5pc) think that ‘manually passing

around or emailing your CV’ is the best way to increase visibility.

CV ContentCreating the perfect fresh graduate CV for the Middle East begins with the content it highlights. More than half (56.5pc) of respondents believe education is the most important part of a fresh graduate’s CV, followed by work and internships (19.5pc) and skills (19.4pc). Further, nearly two-thirds (62.6pc) of respondents think that fresh graduates should add their grades on their CVs, while one-fifth (22.8pc) think it isn’t essential to do so. 10.3pc of respondents think grades should only be added if they are ‘above average’.

In terms of work experience, which fresh graduates often haven’t developed much of, a large majority (83pc) of respondents think fresh graduates should include any

work experience they have on their CV, even if it isn’t very relevant. Beyond formal professional history, nearly 9 in 10 (89pc) respondents think that volunteer work and internships are essential additions to a fresh graduate’s CV.

Structure and LayoutThe ‘Perfect Fresh Graduate CV’ poll revealed that formatting is fundamental for many fresh graduates in the Middle East; however, three-quarters (74.7pc) of respondents believe that ‘format and structure’ are also the most challenging aspect of creating a CV for fresh graduates. 13.8pc of respondents think that ‘not having prior work experience’ is what makes formatting a CV challenging, 9.0pc said ‘choosing skills and keywords’ is the most challenging, while 2.5pc said ‘language and proofing’ is the biggest

challenge. With regards to layout, four

in five (79.5pc) respondents believe a fresh graduate’s CV should be short (one page at most), only 7.5pc disagreed with this statement and 13pc were neutral.

In addition, three-quarters (75.2pc) of respondents think fresh graduates should add a photo on their CV.

A Stronger Job Application The Bayt.com poll also found that job application materials should go further than a CV and include cover letters. In fact, nearly 9 in 10 (88.4pc) respondents believe cover letters are important for fresh grads, with more than three-quarters (76.6pc) claiming cover letters are ‘very important’.

According to the survey, three-quarters (74.5pc) of fresh graduates say they always include a cover letter in their job applications.

When writing their cover letters, nearly three quarters of respondents (73.6pc) find the ‘length and structure’ to be the most challenging component, 11.3pc find it challenging to ‘customize the cover letter for each company/ job’, 9.8pc find it challenging to know ‘what skills and experiences to focus on’ in their cover letter, while 5.4pc said the ‘language and tone’ of the cover letter are the most challenging.

“For fresh graduates in the Middle East, a great CV and cover letter can make all the difference in their success when job hunting. These materials are essential for job seekers to set themselves apart, and with this survey, we aim to provide the insights that will help fresh graduates in the region perfect them,” said Suhail Al Masari, Vice President of Employer Solutions, Bayt.com. “Particularly in our

region, where the proportion of young people in the professional sphere is quite large, being able to market oneself in a competitive job landscape is imperative. We often find that job seekers are not fully equipped to create these essential documents. We encourage all job seekers to visit Bayt.com regularly to improve their job search and application materials and to request professional and individualized support, if needed.”

(Data for the 2018 Perfect Fresh Graduate CV in the Middle East poll was collected online from 11th January 2018 to 4th March 2018. Results are based on a sample of 9,144 respondents from the following countries: UAE, KSA, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Sudan, and Pakistan.)

Qualcomm requests security review of Broadcom bidWashington

US chipmaker Qualcomm postponed its annual

shareholders’ meeting after secretly requesting a national security review of Broadcom’s bid to take over the company, the Singapore-based Broadcom announced Monday.

Qualcomm shareholders were due to meet Tuesday, but Broadcom said it was informed Sunday night Qualcomm secretly filed a voluntary request on January 29 for US regulators to investigate the deal, and was ordered to postpone the meeting for 30 days.

“It should be clear to everyone that this is part of an unprecedented effort by Qualcomm to disenfranchise its own stockholders,” Broadcom said in a statement.

The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) can review any acquisition by a foreign corporation of a US firm that may have an impact on national security, and can recommend the President block the deal. CFIUS has blocked some deals, but frequently foreign companies withdraw once it appears a transaction will be prohibited.

Broadcom said it will fully cooperate with the review, but rejected any national security concerns since it is a US-controlled company, and is in the process of relocating its headquarters back to the United States.

If finalized, the Broadcom-Qualcomm tie-up, estimated at $117 billion, would be the largest merger in a sector awash

with consolidation amid the development of technologies for autonomous vehicles and 5G mobile services.

Qualcomm has repeatedly

rejected multiple Broadcom offers it says undervalue the company, and which could face opposition from the antitrust regulators.

The shareholders were due to consider on several candidates to the board of directors supported by Broadcom.

“This was a blatant,

desperate act by Qualcomm to entrench its incumbent board of directors and prevent its own stockholders from voting for Broadcom’s independent director nominees,” the statement said.

CFIUS last year opposed the takeover of US semiconductor manufacturer Lattice by a Chinese state group backed by a US investment fund, and President Donald Trump then blocked the deal.

In the semiconductor sector, the committee -- whose deliberations are secret -- in 2016 recommended that then-President Barack Obama oppose a deal between the German group Aixtron and Chinese fund Grand Chip because there was a US subsidiary of the German group. (AFP)

The oil industry needs to quickly step up investment to meet rising

demand as the booming US shale sector will only be able to quench the global thirst for crude for the next two years, the International Energy Agency said yesterday.

“The United States is set to put its stamp on global oil markets for the next five years,” said IEA chief Fatih

Birol in a statement as the agency released an annual review of the oil market.

However he noted that “the weak global investment picture remains a source of concern” as the industry faces not only growing demand but many oil fields running dry.

“More investments will be needed to make up for declining oil fields -- the world needs to replace three

million barrels per day of declines each year, the equivalent of the North Sea -- while also meeting robust demand growth,” added Birol.

The IEA released its five-year estimates for the market that see oil demand increasing by 6.9 million barrels per day (mbd) by 2023 to 104.7 mbd, boosted by economic growth in Asia and a resurgent petrochemicals industry in the United States.

China sets GDP growth target at around 6.5pcBeijing

China has set its GDP growth target at around 6.5

per cent for 2018, unchanged from that for 2017, according to a government work report released Monday.

Given China’s economic fundamentals and capacity for job creation, GDP growth of around 6.5pc will enable China to achieve relatively full employment, according to the report delivered by Premier Li Keqiang Monday morning at the first session of the 13th National People’s Congress, China’s top legislature.

China aims to maintain inflation level at around 3pc and create over 11 million new urban jobs. The surveyed urban unemployment rate is projected to stay within 5.5pc, the registered urban jobless rate within 4.5pc, the report showed.

The above targets take into consideration the need to secure a decisive victory in building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, and are fitting given the fact that China’s economy is transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a stage of high-quality

development, Li said.“We will strongly promote

high-quality development,” said Premier Li.

Today, China’s material and technological foundations are much stronger; its industrial system is complete, its market is vast, its human resources are abundant, and its entrepreneurs and innovators are dynamic, Li pointed out.

“We enjoy composite advantages, and all this means that we have the ability and the conditions to achieve higher quality, more efficient, fairer, and more sustainable development,” Li added.

The country will completely open up its general manufacturing sector to foreign investors this year. Meanwhile, access to sectors like telecommunications, medical services, education, elderly care and new energy vehicles will also be expanded for foreign investment, according to Li.

To encourage imports, China will host the first China International Import Expo this year and lower import tariffs on products including automobiles and some everyday consumer goods, said Li. (Xinhua)

Washington

US President Donald Trump said yesterday

he would only scrap planned tariffs on aluminium and steel if a “new & fair” deal to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement is reached.

In a series of tweets, Trump linked the tariffs -- which sparked a fierce global response last week following their surprise announcement -- to issues with NAFTA partners Canada and Mexico.

“Tariffs on Steel and Aluminium will only come off if new & fair NAFTA agreement is signed,” he said, lamenting the “large trade deficits” with Mexico and Canada.

The comments came as US, Mexican and Canadian trade officials were in Mexico City for the final day of the seventh round of talks aimed at modernizing and modifying the trade pact, talks that already had hit serious roadblocks over US demands.

Trump raised the stakes by holding the NAFTA talks hostage to the new tariffs -- 25 per cent on steel and 10pc on aluminium -- as he repeated his claim that NAFTA was a “bad deal” that has taken jobs and companies out of the US.

However, the United States maintains a trade surplus with Canada of nearly $8 billion in 2016, and in the first nine months of 2017 the surplus

was nearly $3bn. The US had a deficit with Mexico of $63bn in 2016, and $52bn in the first three quarters of last year.

Trump administration officials frequently refer to the deficit in goods alone, excluding the offset from dominant US services exports of things like banking and insurance.

Trump ignited fears of a trade war and an outcry from major trading partners this week when he abruptly announced that he would impose blanket tariffs on imported steel and aluminium this week.

He followed that with an even broader threat: reciprocal tariffs on all imports from countries that impose duties on US exports.

Retaliation US trading partners already

are preparing to retaliate, and have pledged to file a dispute in the World Trade Organization.

French President Emmanuel Macron said yesterday the European Union must “react quickly” to US plans that clearly breached global trade rules.

He said the response should be “within the framework of the WTO and in a balanced manner,” adding that it was “clear that these (tariffs) would go against WTO rules.”

Germany warned against protectionist measures, which

it decried as “the wrong path.”“Such measures would

inflict pain on international trade flows and our industry, but above all hurt workers and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert said yesterday.

Canada, which has the most to lose as the top source of US steel and aluminium to the US market, has called the tariffs “unacceptable.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May raised her “deep concern” about the tariffs in a phone call with Trump on Sunday, her office said.

The European Union has said it is drawing up measures against leading US brands like Harley-Davidson and Levi’s jeans.

But Trump over the weekend tweeted that the US could respond by blocking imports of European-made cars, just the kind of tit-for-tat reaction that economist warn could spark a trade war at a time when the US and global economies have only recently returned to firmer footing.

The steel and aluminium tariffs were recommended by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross after a report from his agency concluded that the glut of the metals on global markets was a threat to US national security.

The irony is that while Trump has repeatedly tried

to target China and its trade policies, the steel tariffs would hit US allies the hardest, in particular Canada.

Ross in a television appearance on Sunday repeated that Trump is unlikely grant any exemptions, preferring to use a “broad brush.” But he also raised the possibility the president could change his mind.

Drugs Meanwhile, Trump said

Mexico must “do much more” to stem the flow of illegal drugs into the US.

“They have not done what needs to be done,” he said. “Millions of people addicted and dying.”

However, much of the opioids that have flooded into American households is in the form of prescription drugs manufactured by US pharmaceutical companies.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso responded to Trump in a tweet of his own, saying clamping down on drugs requires cooperation on both sides of the border.

“Dealing with drug trafficking is a shared responsibility between Mexico and the US,” he said.

“Only working together and addressing supply and demand we can stop the illegal (sic) flow of drugs, cash and weapons going both ways.” (AFP)

John Hennessey is a controversial figure in the automotive industry.

Some have heaped praise on Hennessey for his high-powered tuner machines. While others have gone as far as calling the Texan and his business practices crooked and fraudulent.

But one thing is for sure. Hennessey knows fast cars. The latest hypercar to bear his name is the new Venom F5.

Now, the $1.6 million stunner will be headed for the bright lights of the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

With advanced aerodynamics, lightweight construction, and a 1,600 horsepower, twin-turbocharged V8 in the mix, the Venom F5 should be a legit rival for the Bugatti Chiron and the Koenigsegg Agera RS.

In fact, Hennessey claims the Venom will go where its rivals have yet to go - beyond 300 mph.

“It’s no question of if we will break 300 mph but a question of when,” he said in a statement.

The Agera RS recently reached 278 mph on a highway in Nevada while the Chiron has yet to complete an official top speed record run. However, Bugatti expects that speed to be closer to 300 mph than 250 mph.

And then there’s the Venom F5’s predecessor, the 1,244 horsepower Venom GT. The Lotus-based hypercar managed to clock a top speed of 270 mph. As for the Venom F5, a total 24 will be built. According to Hennessey, 10 of the cars are already spoken for. (businessinsider)

This is the Skoda Vision X, a Geneva Motor Show concept that previews a new small crossover from the

Czech brand, to rival the likes of the SEAT Arona and VW T-Roc. The show car also uses compressed natural gas (CNG) as a potentially cleaner fuel and features a mild-hybrid powertrain designed to offer four-wheel drive and limited pure-electric running.

The Vision X - which is expected to reach production in 2019 and could carry the badge Amiq or Anuq - is more of a crossover than an SUV. (autoexpress)

The North American International Auto Show has been a January tradition for decades but it appears the show’s

organizers are considering a switch to October. According to Crain’s Detroit, auto show officials have been considering

the idea for more than a year and have been in talks with automakers, suppliers and city officials. No

decision has been made at this point but even if everyone can agree to an

October switch, it would not happen until 2020.

A rusty old Porsche which doesn’t work has been described as one of the most exciting discoveries in recent years — and it is set to sell for

$700,000.The Porsche 356A 1500 GS Carrera Coupe helped bridge the gap

between the company’s sports vehicles and racing cars when it debuted in 1955.

But this 1957 model hasn’t been driven for 45 years, after its brakes failed a safety inspection in the early 1970s.

Its original engine was removed and taken apart and, after the best part of half-a-century of neglect, the bodywork and wheels are

covered in rust. However, as one of the most desirable classic Porsches, there is

no shortage of interest from around the world in the unrestored sports car.

Gooding & Co, the U.S. auction house, has described it as “certainly one of the most exciting barn-find discoveries in recent memory.”

They have given it a guide price of $700,000 ahead of its sale on March 9 at Amelia Island, Florida.

David Brynan, Gooding & Company senior specialist and Porsche expert, said: “This was Porsche’s top of the line road car and one of the most exotic sports cars of the 1950s.

“They have always been sought after, so most have been restored at least once.

“To find a car that hasn’t been seen in 40 years, and that retains so much original character is virtually unheard of.”

The car is being sold with the original engine, which will need to be rebuilt.

When in working order, the 1.5-liter engine will develop 100 hp - giving it a 0-60mph time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 125mph.

According to factory records, the 1500 GS Coupe was completed on July 4, 1957, and finished in silver metallic with black leatherette

upholstery. (foxnews)

Take your leadership abilities to a new level. Gather some friends and plan a trip that you’ve long been considering but were reluctant to act on. People will naturally look to you for leadership, as you always seem to know how to keep things fun and positive. When it comes to your workplace, this might be a good time to ask for more responsibility.

There may be a stalemate when you’re unwilling to express your feelings. You might automatically assume that things will go smoothly if you leave the decisions up to someone else. Unfortunately, that plan will likely backfire if the decision is made by someone who doesn’t necessarily have your best interests at heart.

Decisions don’t have to be as hard as you make them. You may feel as if a strong force is pulling you in a clear direction, so don’t resist it. You’ll only drive yourself crazy trying to list all the reasons why you should or shouldn’t go the way you’re destined to go. Make things easier on yourself by going with the flow.

Look at things from a more philosophical perspective, instead of seeing everything from such an intensely emotional one. You may have a constant fear that everyone is out to get you. More than likely, you’re blowing small instances out of proportion in your mind. Use your friends as a sounding board for your thoughts.

This is your day,so don’t waste it. Being the helpful, friendly person you are, you may find yourself catering to other people’s needs and desires. Some could see you as the good Samaritan who can offer advice with a friendly attitude. Be careful of draining away all your energy on others. This day might be better spent by catering to you.

Reward yourself for all the great things you’ve done for you and other people. You deserve to be treated like royalty, so make sure that you do. There are many times when you get so critical of the things you do that you end up punishing yourself unnecessarily. Give yourself a treat for being good instead of chastising yourself for being bad.

Put your wisdom into action. There is no good in accumulating knowledge and then letting it sit, collecting dust like an old book on a shelf. Put your thoughts into motion and watch as magical things begin to manifest before your eyes. You have incredible opportunities today that only come when you’re expressing yourself in your truest form.

Enjoying the good times may be fun, but it may also get you into trouble down the road. Be careful of spending all your resources on pleasure without setting something aside for leaner times. The company you keep could encourage your self-destructive behaviours. Since they know you’ll always be in for a good time, you could get swept away by the energy of the crowd.

Your interest in certain off-the-wall topics may be encouraged when you’re engaged in a conversation with someone who shares similar thoughts. Perhaps you exchange ideas about UFOs and life on other planets. Suddenly you’re looking at your life as if you were a character in a science-fiction novel. Exchange books and other literature with those of a similar mindset.

The surge of power within you is going to let others know that you mean business. Make good use of this fantastic boost of energy by conquering your own goals and demons instead of using it to wage war on anyone else. Other people should know to get out of your way when you have your mind set on doing something. If they don’t, politely ask them to move instead of steamrolling over them.

Be more adventurous than usual. Feel free to take a trip somewhere without bringing a map or having any specific destination in mind. The sheer excitement of the unknown should thrill and enthuse you, not frighten and confuse. Your enjoyment of the situation has to do with your attitude toward it. You may not be able to control the hand you’re dealt, but you can certainly control how you play it.

You might find yourself in a difficult situation when faced with a person who doesn’t necessarily approve of how you’re handling yourself. It could be that someone misinterpreted one of your offhand remarks, and now is violently overreacting. Be careful of shooting back caustic remarks that could only aggravate the situation and elevate it to a damaging level.

Philippine police announced yesterday

the arrest of a suspected pro-Islamic State jihadist accused of killing civilians in last year’s deadly siege of the southern city of Marawi.

Hundreds of gunmen flying black IS flags seized Marawi in May last year, triggering a five-month battle that claimed more than 1,100 lives, in a bid to establish a caliphate in the largely Catholic country.

Nasser Lomondot was arrested on Saturday in

Manila, months after he fled the fighting in Marawi.

“He participated in the killing of innocent civilians and committed violence against female and child hostages,” regional military spokesman Major Ronald Suscano told reporters.

As government forces battled to wrest back control of Marawi, Lomondot directed a diversionary attack by pro-IS gunmen in the neighbouring town of Marantao, Suscano added. (AFP)

Two anti-establishment leaders made early plays

to govern Italy yesterday, sending ripples across the euro zone after voters relegated mainstream parties to the sidelines in delivering a hung parliament.

With the bloc’s third-largest economy seemingly facing prolonged political instability, the anti-immigrant League claimed

the right to rule after its centre-right alliance won the largest bloc of votes.

“We have the right and duty to govern,” its leader Matteo Salvini told a news conference, saying investors should have no fear of it taking office as shares, bonds and the euro weakened on prospects of a eurosceptic-led administration promising to ramp up spending. (Reuters)

Evidence of life on Mars is being covered up by Nasa,

according to a researcher Barry DiGregorio at a Buckingham University.

The agency’s space explorer, the Curiosity rover, has snapped what may be trace fossils created by soft-bodied creatures on the red planet, he says.

An upcoming ‘bombshell’ report will reveal how Nasa is aware of the find and has chosen to keep it hidden from the public, the scientist claims.

The controversial scientist believes the space agency could be ignoring the find because of its plans for a manned mission in 2030s, when astronauts will explore Mars in more depth.

However, according to NASA, the shapes captured in images from Mars are simply

rock crystals that are currently undergoing analysis.

The findings were made by Barry DiGregorio, an honorary research fellow at the University of Buckingham who specialises in studies of microscopic life found in the

soil of our planet.Images beamed back from

Mars by Curiosity appear to show patterns similar to Ordovician trace fossils Dr DiGregorio has photographed here on Earth, he says. (MailOnline)

A South Korean delegation met North Korean leader

Kim Jong Un yesterday, a South Korean official said, after arriving in the North on a visit aimed at encouraging North Korea and the United States to talk.

Both North Korea and the United States have expressed a willingness to talk, but U.S. President Donald Trump demands the North first gives up its nuclear weapons programme.

The North, which has vowed never to give up its nuclear deterrent against what it sees as U.S. hostility,

says it will not sit down to talks under preconditions.

Reclusive North Korea, which has made no secret of its pursuit of a nuclear-tipped missile capable of reaching the mainland United States in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolutions, is also concerned about a joint U.S.-South Korea military exercise, which it sees as preparation for war.

South Korean officials have said the drill will start next month as planned, after being postponed for the Winter Olympics held last month in South Korea.

The 10-member South

Korean delegation, led by National Security Office head Chung Eui-yong, was greeted by North Korean officials after landing in Pyongyang, said Kim Eui-kyeom, a spokesman for South Korea’s presidential office.

The North Koreans at the airport included Ri Son Gwon, chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country and Kim Yong Chol, who heads the United Front Department, the North Korean office responsible for handling inter-Korean affairs. Both visited South Korea last month during the Winter Olympics. (Reuters)

After photographer Monni Must’s 28-year-old daughter Miya committed

suicide while in the midst of an abusive relationship, the grieving mother adopted Miya’s spunky black Labrador, Billy Bean.

Last year, as the 10th anniversary of her daughter’s death approached, the dog was nearing 13 and becoming increasingly frail.

“I knew that I was falling apart,” said Must.

“The thought of Billy dying was just more than I could handle.”

So she decided to clone her.She paid more than $50,000 for what is

essentially an identical twin of Billy, born at a later date.

“I have three other daughters and they thought I had completely lost my mind,” Must said.

Cloning animals is hardly new. The first major success was Dolly the sheep, born in 1996 as the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. In 2005, researchers in South Korea cloned the first dog.

But the news this week that singer Barbra Streisand had cloned her dog grabbed international headlines, and sparked fresh outrage from animal rights groups.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) president Ingrid Newkirk issued a statement saying she would “love to have talked her out of cloning,” noting that “millions of wonderful adoptable dogs are languishing in animal shelters every year or dying in terrifying ways when abandoned.”

Vicki Katrinak, program manager for animal research issues at the Humane Society of the United States, agreed.

Companies that clone animals are “preying on grieving pet owners, giving

them a false promise that they are going to replicate their beloved pet,” she told AFP.

“Pet cloning doesn’t replicate a pet’s personality,” she said, adding there is “no justification” for the practice.

Clients rich and poor Just how many pets are cloned each year

is unclear. The main US company engaged in the practice, ViaGen Pets, declined AFP’s requests for comment.

“We have produced thousands of happy, healthy cloned cows and hundreds of cloned horses,” says its website, adding that company scientists “have been developing successful animal cloning and reproductive technology for over 15 years.”

A former employee of ViaGen, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, estimated that the Texas-based company has cloned around 100 cats and dogs.

The other main source for cloned pets is the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Seoul, South Korea, which says it has cloned some 800 pets and charges $100,000 each.

Many companies have tried and failed to make the pet cloning business work.

Ron Gillespie, a former cattle semen salesman, owns a company called PerPETuate, which collects pet DNA for $1,300 plus a storage fee.

They used to do pet cloning, but now farm it out to other companies like ViaGen Pets, he said. His client list runs the gamut from rich to poor, he said.

“I have a homeless man and I have a celebrity,” said Gillespie, adding that the homeless man was not out on the street when he paid for to have his dog’s DNA frozen, but fell into dire financial straits afterward.

Now, he desperately wants “to get his dog back,” but is unsure if he will ever be able to pay for a clone, Gillespie said.

How it works Dogs can be cloned up to five days after

they die and cats up to three, as long as the corpses are kept cool, Gillespie said.

Ideally, though, the pet should be alive when the veterinarian takes a tissue biopsy, a chunk of skin and muscle about the size of a pencil eraser.

The next step is to take an egg cell from a donor dog, remove the egg’s nucleus, and insert DNA from the pet to be cloned.

When an embryo develops, it is transplanted in the womb of a surrogate dog.

Animal rights groups say the process causes undue suffering to the dogs that provide the egg cells and carry the embryos.

“Because cloning has a high failure rate, many dogs are caged and tormented for every birth that actually occurs,” said Newkirk.

Traits that will carry over can include temperament, physical characteristics and genetic flaws. Coat patterns may differ, and the cloned animal will have no awareness of the life its predecessor lived.

According to Must, the puppy that was cloned from Billy is playful and fearless, like her. They also share the same petite frame, shiny coat and big paws.

“They look exactly alike for sure. She will do things like Billy does, like putting her head down and rolling into your lap,” said Must.

She named the puppy Gunni, after the town in Colorado, Gunnison, where her daughter lived, and is grateful for the respite from grief the canine has provided.

She was born the same week as the anniversary of her daughter’s passing. The puppy’s first ultrasound took place -- coincidentally -- on Miya’s birthday.

“It was singularly one of the best decisions that I have made,” Must said.

“It has given me a new lease on life.” (AFP)

Australia needed just 22 balls and 20 minutes

of play on the fifth day at Kingsmead to secure a 118-run triumph over South Africa in the opener of their four-match series yesterday.

The visitors required a single wicket to secure success after South Africa resumed on 293 for nine, chasing an improbable victory target of 417.

Five runs were added by the home side before Quinton de Kock was hit on the back pad and trapped leg before wicket by Josh Hazlewood (3-61) as he tried to launch the ball over the boundary.

Mitchell Starc earlier had a chance to complete a hat-trick with the first ball of the day after being denied by bad light on Sunday but bowled down the leg side to De Kock, who was eventually out for 83 after adding two to his overnight tally.

Morne Morkel was not out on three as Starc (4-75) finished with nine wickets in the match.

“It was a nice way to start, said victorious skipper Steve Smith afterwards.“The first test in a series is always important and the way we played was a real plus.”

Australia’s win has been overshadowed by a heated off-field exchange between

players at the tea interval on the fourth day, which the International Cricket Council (ICC) are investigating, as well as a charge for spinner Nathan Lyon.

CCTV footage from the players tunnel showed Australia vice-captain

David Warner and home wicketkeeper De Kock involved in a fiery exchange as players climbed the stairwell to their dressing rooms during the break.

The video shows Warner being restrained by Australia batsman Usman Khawaja and spin bowler Lyon as he directs a verbal barrage at De Kock, who left the field as South Africa’s not-out batsman at the same time as the Australians.

In a separate incident, Lyon dropped a ball on prone batsman AB de Villiers after he was run out prior to lunch on Sunday as South Africa’s top order collapsed in their run chase. (Reuters)

Serena Williams’ return to the WTA Tour following

the birth of her first child will be the “greatest challenge” of her career, but the American can get back to her best in time for the French Open, according to her coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Williams, who won her 23rd grand slam title at last year’s Australian Open before going on maternity leave, pulled out of this year’s tournament in Melbourne.

She represented the United States in a Fed Cup doubles match last month and is scheduled to take part in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells this week.

Asked if her latest comeback represented the biggest test of her career, Mouratoglou said: “It probably is... now she is 36, just had a child, a second blood clot, has gone more than a year without any competition. I think we can say without a doubt that this is her biggest challenge.”

Former world number one Williams, who returned in 2012 from surgery for a life-threatening blood clot on her lung and climbed back to the top of the rankings, said she almost died after giving birth to her daughter in September.

Mouratoglou said fans had to give Williams time to adjust to the rigours of the sport. (Reuters)

Five-time major winner Phil Mickelson defeated Justin

Thomas in a play-off to win the WGC-Mexico Championship - his first victory since the 2013 Open.

Thomas chipped in for eagle at the last for a seven-under 64 but watched fellow American Mickelson birdie the 15th and 16th to post 66 for a 16-under total. Mickelson, 47, parred

the first extra hole to win his 46th title and end a run of 101 tournaments without a win.

England’s Tyrell Hatton missed out on the play-off after a bogey on the 18th.

Hatton was in a three-way tie with Mickelson and Thomas but he signed for a 67 after his dropped shot and finished joint third with Rafa Cabrera Bello, who had birdied the same hole in his closing 67. (BBC)

Benjamin Mendy has stepped up his recovery from a long-

term knee injury by returning to training with Manchester City.

The Premier League leaders released photographs of the France left-back participating in a session with his team-mates yesterday.

Mendy, 23, has been out since suffering ligament damage in City’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace in September and subsequently

undergoing surgery. The developments follow an interview

Mendy gave last week suggesting he was close to a return.

Mendy told the club website: “When I started my recovery, I had in mind the semi-finals of the Champions League.

“That was my goal, but I am coming back a bit quicker than expected originally so maybe it will be possible for me to return sooner than that. I believe in this.

“I think it’s possible for me to come back within four weeks. It’s not a good thing to come back too soon and you have to take your time.”

Mendy made an impressive start at City following his £49.1million move from Monaco last summer but made only five appearances before being sidelined. (PA Sport)

Tottenham Hotspur have nothing to fear ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League game against

Juventus and possess plenty of firepower to progress to the quarter-finals, midfielder Son Heung-min said.

Tottenham clawed their way back from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw with the Italian champions in Turin in the first leg of the last-16 tie.

“We play at home but we are not scared,” Son said. “We need to play our game, be confident and play forward like we play at Wembley. That’s the most important thing.

“We are hungry. We are not finished... it’s a Champions League game against a difficult opponent... I hope it’s a great atmosphere and I think we have a great opportunity,” the South Korean added.

Son scored twice as Spurs outclassed Huddersfield Town 2-0 in the Premier League on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to 17 games.

Tottenham, who are preparing to move to a new stadium next season, have taken time to settle in at their temporary home but are favourites to reach the last eight.

“You can see how well Tottenham play. We deserve to play in the Champions League to the quarter-final or even more. We are good enough,” Son said. (Reuters)

Prosecutors have opened a routine investigation into the death of Fiorentina

captain and Italy international Davide Astori.Udine chief prosecutor Antonio De Nicolo

said he had opened a “culpable homicide” inquiry - a routine move before an autopsy in Italy.

“It permits us to individualise responsibility if there is any,” he said.

“An inquiry has been opened for culpable homicide against persons unknown.

“It is a duty to ascertain if the death of Astori came about through tragic fatality or if someone could have foreseen something.

“At this moment no one has responsibility for anything.”

Fiorentina say Astori’s autospy will take place on Tuesday and his body will be taken to Florence on Wednesday before his funeral on Thursday.

Fiorentina were scheduled to play Udinese in Serie A on Sunday afternoon but news of Astori’s death led to all Serie A games being called off.

Police said Astori was found in his hotel room on Sunday morning. (BBC)

Bayern thrash

Freiburg

4-0Berlin

Runaway Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich won 4-0 at Freiburg on Sunday and veteran

strikers Claudio Pizarro and Mario Gomez scored to boost their chances of World Cup recalls.

Bayern, chasing a sixth successive title, opened up a 20-point lead over Schalke 04 with nine games to go.

Peruvian forward Pizarro became the fourth oldest player to net in the Bundesliga when he gave Cologne an early lead at home to VfB Stuttgart before Germany’s Gomez replied with a brace to lead the visitors to a 3-2 win.

Pizarro, 39, put bottom-of-the-table Cologne ahead after seven minutes and has now scored at least one Bundesliga goal in each of the last 20 years.

Cologne dominated, threatened a second but were floored when Gomez, 32, scored twice in three minutes before halftime.

Andreas Beck added a third for Stuttgart in the second half before a Milos Jojic free kick gave the Billy Goats a glimmer of hope five minutes from time but it was not enough.

Pizarro has never taken part at a World Cup as Peru have not qualified since 1982 and he last played for his country in March 2016, but coach Ricardo Gareca has not entirely ruled out the forward.

Gomez missed the last World Cup after an injury-plagued season but is hoping to convince Germany coach Joachim Loew to take him to Russia.

Cologne have 17 points, eight adrift of safety, while Stuttgart climbed to ninth with 33.

Bayern were gifted the lead at Freiburg by an Alexander Schwolow own goal in the 25th minute and Corentin Tolisso added another three minutes later.
