5960’S PRESIDENT REPORTBy Louis Rocha

2018…HAPPY NEW YEAR, MERRY CHRISTMAS, & HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable and safe time off. Lots of blessings to you and your family and I hope you all had plenty of time to spend with your Family and Friends. I am looking forward to the challenges that 2018 will bring us. I truly know that there is no better team in the industry than Local 5960/GM Lake Orion. As we attend Leadership conferences, it is well known that WE are the leaders of the future of the car industry. Last year we ended on a good note in that we were re-certified in BIQ III and with the hard work of all of us, BIQ IV is right around the corner. Local 5960 Leadership continues to host plenty of events that welcomes everyone. It is a great opportunity to put work aside and have a chance to meet all of our families and have some fellowship. Some of these events are the Kid’s Christmas Party, UAW Night with the Pistons, our Annual Golf Outing and Picnic, Veteran’s Headstone Cleaning and the Presidential Ball just to name a few. Please see the flier inside for details.

Details will soon be out for our 37th Constitution Convention which occurs every four years. I do not yet have the number of delegates we are entitled to and/or any other information at this point. The election should be held in April 2018, with the Convention to be held in June, 2018; more details to follow. When a Convention occurs, so do changes in our International Leadership. I would like to thank President Dennis Williams, Vice President Norwood Jewell and Vice President Rory Gamble for their years of service. I’d also like to thank our Servicing Representative Brian Johnson, on his years of service and wish him a happy retirement. With that we welcome our new Servicing Rep Tom ‘Puck’ Kurzyiec. Congratulation on your new position and we wish you the best of luck. I’m looking forward to this New Year and looking forward to continued involvement. Want to get involved, let me know…

In Solidarity,Louis Rocha5960’s President

Every year around this time UAW Local 5960 and Orion Assembly never fail to reach out to those who could use a helping hand. Thank

you to everyone that donated to this years coat drive.

Together we raised $1,300 dollars to purchase 172 coats and received countless coats and

clothing donations. This year, UAW Local 5960 presented the donations to the city of Pontiac. Mayor, Deirdre Waterman was very thankful for all of the

coats and clothing that will be distributed throughout the city.

This years toy drive was on wheels as the bicycles kept rolling onto the truck! Together, UAW Local 5960 and

Orion Assembly raised $5,972, purchasing 93 bikes and lots of toys!

The T.F.T. truck was completely filled with an additional 3 Chevy pick up trucks and a Chevy van were needed to carry all the bikes

and toys to their destination.“What a great problem to have!” stated UAW Local 5960 Shop

Chairman, Jason Leist as he realized that all of the bikes and toys would not fit in the large cargo truck that was sent to pick them up.

The T.F.T. team would like to thank everyone that donated their time, money and toys.

SHOP CHAIRMAN’S REPORTBy Jason Leist Brothers and Sisters,I’d like to wish everyone a happy New Year and welcome everyone back. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas break. Thanks to everyone that donated

their time, money and toys to this year’s Toys for Tots drive. Together we raised $5,972 dollars, purchased 93 bikes and lots of toys. Thank you again. As we start the New Year, please remember to work safe and be aware of your surroundings in and outside of the plant. The UAW, GM and Orion Assembly are all committed to making sure that we can come to work and return home safely.

On behalf of the UAW Local 5960 Bargaining Committee, we would like to congratulate our members that have chosen to retire this past December and wish them the best of luck in the future. With a successful launch of the Bolt EV and AV we look forward to continuing the momentum into this year. Our outlook for 2018 as it relates to the plant is still in the planning stages. I look forward to providing you with updated information during the first quarter of this year.

CIVIL RIGHTSGreetings Sisters and Brothers, we hope everyone

had a safe and prosperous Holiday Season. I am sure by now everyone has had a taste of clearing the

snow from the walk way or wading through snowy areas. Whatever the case may be, whether it is snow or

freezing weather we know it is a new year in January. The beginning of the New Year also brings about change, hope, and aspirations. The first person that comes to mind when I think of these words is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. January 15th, 2018 will be Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He was a Baptist minister, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and civil rights leader who championed justice and equality. As he said, “injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” On Monday, January 15, 2018, the Detroit MLK Day Program/Rally and March will commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke about change in America to attain social justice. Dr. King was also a

great advocate of change through non-violent civil actions based on his Christian values. His hopes

were highlighted in his “I Have A Dream” speech, where in the latter part of his speech he says, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal.’” and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s aspirations were heard during the March on Washington for Jobs

and Freedom on August 28, 1963, in which he calls for an end to racism in the United States and called for civil and economic rights. On this day, Americans are encouraged to observe this day as not just a day off from work, but also a “Day of Service” to others with appropriate civic, community, and service projects. Our Sisters and Brothers are very aware of this type of community service as we UAW members understand that giving back to the community is part of who we are and what we do. If you are interested in a great MLK Day March, our Civil Rights Committee has frequented the Rally and March for “Jobs, Peace & Justice” at Central United Methodist Church, 23 E. Adams and Woodward, in Detroit, Mi. Activities go from noon until around 3pm for more information go to the link (https://mlkdetroit.org). As we step into the New Year 2018, we see a lot of hatred, anger, and racism in America. Let’s go into this New Year with positive change, hope, and aspirations, for justice and fairness in America. We understand what it is to have our rights represented and the importance of UNITY to build and grow our UAW Local 5960.

In Solidarity,James Paramo

Celebrate!JANUARY RETIREES REPORTBy Rupert “Rupe” O’Brien, Jr.Hello Brothers and Sisters:When you receive this newsletter, we will be into a new year (2018). We hope everyone survived 2017 and are in good health. 2017 was not a very good year, fires, killings, and politics; let’s hope this year will be much better.I hope everyone received their health care insurance in the

way they wanted it. If not you will have to call: Enroll: 1-866-637-7555, Questions: 1-877-336-0377. TTY; or 711.I am working with President, Louis Rocha and the Local’s officers to be able to access the Local Web site (uaw5960.org) so as I can have a password to get into the retiree section, and be able to update retirees on what is going on. Hopefully, I can and am able to keep you updated. This past year we attended 4 outings: two ball games at Jimmy John’s Stadium, Soaring Eagle Casino, and to Frankenmuth. Sandra is planning a trip to Greektown Casino; no date has been set at this time.At the December meeting: Rite-Aid was giving flu shots to members. We started our auction at 10:00 a.m. this year. At our January meeting, we will have a State of Michigan employee talking about identity theft. At the February meeting the Benefit Trust will be in to discuss the changes and to answer any questions you may have.At our December Meeting we accepted a new member from 653: Shelia Beltz. Welcome Sheila! There were a lot of door prizes given out plus, fruit baskets, poinsettias. Once again, Wally Edgar donated a 32 inch TV to raffle off. We made over $400 on it and the auction also did great. I believe all total we made enough for 3 Grandkids Scholarships. We want to thank everyone who helped us with these numbers. We also want to thank the Local’s Executive Board for helping with the serving and clean-up.Just a reminder: at our January meeting we will have guest speaker from the State of Michigan on identity theft and our February Meeting the Medical Benefit Trust will be in. Local 5960 held their children’s Christmas Party on December 10th. Attendance was down a little, but the ones that showed up had a great time.I want to thank the following retirees that showed up to help: Mel Helm, Dick Schefke, Billie Adler, Chuck Haworth, and Cliff Fatt and as always, Santa and Mrs. Claus were the big Attraction.

VICE PRESIDENT REPORTBy Gerald Lang Imagine its December 30th. It’s cold, the heat’s been shut off and the food supply is eliminated. You and 700 others just took over an automotive facility with the intent to shut down General Motors.

In 1936 workers stood together and changed the automotive industry. A lot has changed since then, but I believe time is repetitively cyclical. We face our own difficulties in this leg of the labor movement. What are a few things we deal with today?• Workers, not the operational system, often seen as the

problem. Even if the game plan is flawed.• Anti-worker politicians and their pro-business ideologies.• Lack of respect for the grievance procedure and collective

bargaining. Todays’ disconnect between employer and employee is something I bang my head against the wall every day trying to comprehend. Why is the line worker and let’s say… Human Resources… not seen as co-workers who should have the same respect and dignity for each other under corporate policy? We as line

workers are expected to respect their positions, but the respect is not reciprocated. We are the producers of the products that generate large corporate profits. One would think there would be a little more respect as they also get paid through our hard work. I guarantee every one of them expect or enjoy a piece of that profit in pay or bonuses.Today’s labor movement must be fought together just like workers 82 years ago who historically changed the entire auto industry. We’ve got to stick together and fight for each other. We need to be stubborn enough to maintain what we have and persistent enough to gain more. I hope this New Year brings us solidarity, togetherness, new products and workplace stability in an environment free from stress.I wish you each strength, success and the respect and dignity you deserve forever.

COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEESeeking members who are interested in joining the Community Service Committee.Looking for individuals who will work well in a group, while handling individual tasks and supporting community engagement project development. The Community Service Committee’s (CSC) objective is to meet our mission of inspiring members to connect while strengthening our surrounding communities. As a committee member you will have to be willing to dedicate your time and energy for the better of serving the Local 5960 membership and community. To apply please contact Alyssa Rebrovich, the CSC Chair at: [email protected] or complete a Standing Committee application in the Work Center.

Health Insurance:  Members are encouraged to contact Fidelity after the 1st of the year to make sure their dependents and coverage is still accurate. In the past we have experienced issues at the New Year where the system struggles with eligibility. This causes members coverage to be changed or dropped and loss of dependents. To insure you don’t get a surprise with a bill or doctor’s appointment being cancelled for lack of coverage. Contact Benefits Service Center at 800-489-4646, password is “Representative”. Use the Health and Insurance prompt and verify your coverage. Tech savvy members can go to www.gmbenefits.com and very their coverage there.

Sick Leave:  Members are encouraged to call the benefits office before they call in a sick leave to clarify their benefits. There has been an increase of members who do not understand their sick leave benefits. If you have questions or concerns about your benefits contact your rep immediately. Do not assume you know your benefits because someone on Facebook told you that how they did it. There are many variables to sick leaves and your doctors.Members are also reminded once you are on Sick Leave; it is your responsibility to follow up with your case worker and your doctors. You are the only one who can coordinate with all the parties involved. If you need assistance you should contact the Benefits Office immediately.

PSP/401k: Fidelity Investments will be in the plant on January 23rd to discuss investment opportunities and educate members how to use their PSP/401k accounts. Members who ARE NOT currently entitled to post employment pensions are encouraged to attend these classes. Your PSP/401k IS your pension. Members need to learn how to get the most out of these programs for a secure future. Members interested should stop by the benefits office to sign up for these classes so we can get a head count. The classes will be held after work hours in the Aux Café. Classes normally run about an hour.

Amwell App:  Members who are on Blue Cross or Blue Care Network can use the Amwell app and visit a doctor without leaving the house. You will be conecte3d to a board certified doctor who can treat simple colds and flu over the phone. They can even send in scripts to your local pharmacy. The office visit for this service will be $12.50 if you use service code BCBSM. You MUST enter this code at the time of the visit to receive the reduced office visit.
