Presidents Report
The Tanunda Cricket Club headed into the 2017-18 season with the aim of winning back to
back A1R premierships and finally getting over that hurdle of getting back into the A1
competition. Whilst we didn’t have the result we were hoping for in the Grand Final, we’ve got
over the hurdle of getting back into the A1 competition – great stuff! We certainly have a side
that can play great cricket at that level for many years to come.
The B’s dropped down to A3 with instant result, getting used to winning games of cricket again
and romping home to the minor premiership with two outright wins in a row to close out the
minor round, sharing a rare double of the A grade and B grade winning outright on the same
day! Like the A’s, unfortunately the premiership was not ours to be had this year. Well done
on making it to the Grand Final and no doubt the fire will burn in your bellies to take home the
prize next season.
Congratulations also to the A4s for again making the finals, unfortunately for the 2nd year in
a row the worst batting performance of the year came in the semi-final, but we lost to the better
side on the day who went on to win the premiership.
Many thanks to my fellow captains Trent and Dylan – your leadership of our cricketers each
week is greatly appreciated.
The Tanunda Clubhouse continued as our Major Sponsor this season, with Tundarri Sales &
Service becoming a Gold Sponsor of the club. We were also privileged to have Barossa Valley
Brewing, Barossa Auto Group, Goers Ceilings, Ultimate Engineering, WFI Insurance and
Yourtech Services as our Silver Sponsors. Overall, the community and business support of
the Tanunda Cricket Club has been outstanding, with a large number of organisations on
board as our sponsors beyond those listed here supporting our great club this season (refer
to the sponsors pages). This support makes a huge difference to our ability to continue to
move forward and make improvements that will benefit for all involved in cricket in Tanunda.
Thank you to all of our valued sponsors, we look forward to your support continuing into the
future.
To the hard-working committee at the Tanunda Cricket Club, thanks for all of your efforts. A
club doesn’t run on its own, and many players would be amazed by the number of volunteer
hours given behind the scenes each week to make our great club run. That said – we do
have “too few” carrying the load around the club, with those people probably the busiest away
from the club also with work and life. Really is time for us to spread the load as a club into the
future as the current model isn’t sustainable.
A few special mentions re notes of appreciation, thanks to:
• The training nets upgrade team of Stuart Ratsch, Shane Manning, Gavin, Nick & Jacob
Judd and Hanson’s concrete (along with the other helpers who gave their time), what
a fantastic improvement to our training experience.
• Mel Roestenberg for not only being a rock within our senior committee, for ensuring
our players and sponsors were well fed but also taking on the management of Junior
cricket. A massive effort. We definitely need to get more support in the junior area
within the club (we have enough parents that could help, that’s for sure!), so hopefully
some step up to the plate in the season’s ahead.

A GRADE PREMIERS
39/40 – 46/47 – 47/48 – 49/50 – 50/51 – 51/52 – 78/79 – 83/84 – 92/93 – 93/94 – 94/95 – 02/03 – 03/04
• Stuart Ratsch for everything, simply amazing. From the fore-mentioned cricket net
upgrade, shade for the roller, fixing the stumps through to line marking every week
along with always being there to help. Thanks mate.
• Chris Goers and Pete Edwards for taking on pitch curation duties at Tanunda Oval and
doing an outstanding job, be it supporting Saturday cricket through to junior cricket
finals during week nights, games for Faith College on a Friday and SACA junior
carnivals throughout the week. Brilliant job boys.
• Trent Goers for not only doing a terrific job as captain of the A grade, but for also
running training throughout the season.
• Matthew Whitelum for coaching our Under 16s, an even bigger challenge with this also
needing a Friday Night commitment and even more special with Luca not playing in
the side for much of the season.
• Tanunda Football Club for your continued support and collaboration, we really
appreciate it, and the news of the lighting upgrade coming shortly will be a game
changer for both of our clubs.
• Ben Linke for doing up the bowling machine – will be great to see it being used regularly
next season.
• Hamish Alexander for doing an excellent job as the clubs first ever Records Officer.
• Chateau Tanunda for their support of Junior Cricket and for allowing us to hold our
sponsors day at a very special venue.
• To the handful of cricketers that were actually willing to get out and help with chores
like covers (one of those things that we all need to help more with if we want to enjoy
all that is turf cricket).
A highlight of the year was our sponsors day, which continues to go from strength to strength
with 6 teams this year, with the only dampener on the day being the “light shower” that
managed to persistently rain throughout the afternoon, cricket was the winner. It really is a
delight to see the people that make it possible for us to play the game we love to have a ball
Last but not least, thanks yet again to my patient family, Sandy, Ben and Riley. Always being
willing to give me a hand to get things done, generally involved with collecting stuff, setting
something up or packing up the mess afterwards. Thanks yet again for putting up all the
cricket related interruptions.
Bring on the 2018/19 season and our return to the big stage of A1 cricket.

Sponsors
The committee, the players and supporters of the Tanunda Cricket Club would like to thank
their most generous sponsors, who in the last few years have assisted in building the club to
where we are today. Without their support, such things as preparing / maintaining our turf
wicket (and associated watering and covering equipment), the new roller for Tanunda Oval,
the new equipment shed at Faith, new cricket equipment and our playing and after game attire
would not have been possible.

Results
All statistics provided are for the minor rounds of the season as this is how the trophy winners
are decided. Should a team make the finals, then those matches scorecards will be displayed
separately.
A1R MVP – Trent elected to exclude himself from the voting for the A1R MVP. The committee executive reviewed the votes and Trent’s performance throughout in each game and were happy that Sam was the worthy winner of the Tanunda Cricket Club’s A1R MVP for the 2018/2019 season.
A3 MVP – Dylan elected to exclude himself from the voting for the A3 MVP. The committee executive reviewed the votes and Dylan’s performance throughout in each game and were happy that Micah was the worthy winner of the Tanunda Cricket Club’s A3 MVP for the 2018/2019 season.
A4 MVP – Voting for the A4 MVP was conducted by Life Member Ray Giersch. Due to many players only playing enough games to qualify, the A4 MVP voting for the 2018/2019 season was determined using the “average MVP votes per game played” for all players that qualified to play in A4 finals.

A1 Reserves Captain’s Report
Our goal at the start of my first year in the job was to finish top and get back up to A1s. We
knew it would be difficult with how young our team was, but that said, we also knew we had
several very good cricketers in the side.
Unfortunately, the season didn’t start as well as we’d hoped in the first couple games with
Martin Brown throwing his wicket away against Light Pass resulting in a loss to a side we really
should beat easily.
We headed into Christmas with a massive win over our arch rivals in Nuri, and at that point
we all knew that if we played our best cricket we could easily smash teams and finish top.
Went into Christmas break sitting 3rd, with plenty of work still to do. We also hadn’t had a
batsman make a 100 at that point of the season, so that became a goal of ours to be achieved
before the end of year.
A number of games without a ball being bowled didn’t help us after Christmas (heat and
washouts) but we headed up to Eudunda for a one-day game that we knew we had to win.
Chenny put on a batting masterclass and we made a big score and taught them a cricketing
lesson.
The later the season went, the better Sam’s batting became, with him looking better and better
game after game, seeing them like beach balls.
We headed to Lyndoch knowing we had to win outright and thanks to our bowlers, especially
M Boschen we did just that with the skinny bugger taking an outstanding 12 wickets for the
match.
Highlight of the year for me was our last game against Nuri knowing we had to win to secure
top spot and that elusive A1 spot. Awesome to see Sam Colquhoun taking it on his shoulders
and hitting a great 100 for us.
Unfortunately, whilst we’d achieved the A1 promotion, the season didn’t have the ending we
wanted with not winning the flag but well done this year boys and look forward to next year.
Special thank you to Melissa and Swanny for all their support for us and to my old man and
Pete for doing the pitch every week and drinking a carton of red tins in the process!

A3 Captain’s Report
This report is written from the Arizona Desert, about as far from a cricket oval as you can get,
and October was a long time ago, but we’ll see how we go.
The season started with the news that we would become an A3 side which was met with mixed
feelings. No one likes to be dropped. I always try and find something positive to run with, and
the message was simple, we were going to be really competitive and win quite a few more
games than last year. That said – it also came with the pressure and expectation to play finals
cricket which would be great for young and old alike.
The season started well with a couple of big wins early and we found ourselves on top of the
ladder, but 3 loses before Christmas meant we were out of the 4 with a lot of work to do.
After a heat affected game and a washout the next week, we managed to lose another spot
on the competition. The competition was that close. In the end the equation was simple, to
play finals cricket we must win our last 2 games. One of those wins was an outright, not easy
to do in 65 overs of cricket. This was when we really came together as a team knowing that
what was needed seemed to unite a team wanting to play finals cricket.
To win the last 2 games outright and manage to go from 6th to top place was great fun but
also a great achievement. Suddenly it made a few teams take notice. To play Angaston in
the Semi-Finals worked well for us having not played them all season, as there were no ‘bad
thoughts’ from any previous games. We played a great Semi-Final to earn our place in the
Grand Final. Things didn’t go our way in the Grand Final but that’s cricket, and we will have
another crack at it next year.
As a first year Captain it couldn’t have gone as well without a lot of help, so thanks to Swanny
and Mel for their help, but also to the whole club. To all my guys, thanks for the umpiring,
scoring, afternoon tea and anything I asked of you. Hope to do it all again next season.
Cheers
Dylan

A4 Captain’s Report
Availability was a skillset this season resulting in me captaining the A4s due mainly to the fact that
I was one of a handful of players who was regularly available leading up to Christmas and due to
the fact that our standing captain Jamie was out injured for the first ½ of the season in a freak
“having a kick of football with the kids / too old to do that” incident before the season started.
The first half of the season was a real challenge, with many regulars out of action and players
missing in the As and Bs making it difficult to field a team on many occasions. The 2nd half of the
season was far more successful, with a more settled side and great contributions across the team
seeing the team come home with a wet sail, securing a finals berth with a round to go.
Unfortunately, our batting woes in Semi Finals continued leading to us finishing the season at that
point. I think if we were honest with ourselves there were definitely a couple of sides that deserved
to be in the Grand Final before us, and a third-place finish is a reasonable outcome given the
challenges throughout the season.
Highlights of the year:
1. Sam Cox finally getting a 50 and doubling it up to get that “opening bowlers” 100.
Hundreds are special for people that have concentrated on batting throughout their
careers, but even more special for those blokes who have been picked in teams to open
the bowling and hold the tail together– great stuff Chopper. 3 for 251 on Tanunda Oval
was also good fun! 2. Jacob Judd taking 4 for 1 to ensure Chopper enjoyed his 100 with a win. 3. The Whitelum father and son effort chasing down 120 with an undefeated opening
stand. Matt showed he’s still a class act and Luca showed he’s a great all-round talent
for the years ahead. 4. Wayne and Cam Bishop ticking the “father and son” box, also with a win. 5. Jamie Roehr showing that he spent the first ½ of the season in private net sessions
learning how to make the ball talk – his bowling in the 2nd ½ of the year was great to
watch.
6. Adam Norman’s casual one handed catch at Deep Fine Leg at Faith – so casual that
the rest of the team assumed it must have gone for 6.
7. Graeme Murphy and Chris Collins reminiscing re 80’s TV shows, especially Dexter from
Perfect Match in the slips at Faith rather than worrying about watching the cricket.
Almost time for another one-day flag next season – hopefully we get a consistent strong side next
year to give the premiership a real shake.

Junior Report
Wow what a difference a year makes!
With strong numbers registering, including kids at U14 that hadn’t previously played cricket, we
made the decision to field 2 x U14 teams, which turned out to be a better option rather than having
9 kids miss out on a game each week. Of course, things were a little difficult, if kids were away
etc, but all in all this was managed very well with some U12s able to step up if required.
Thank you to our two coaches, Stuart Swan and Justin Thompson, who did an excellent job, and
whilst we didn’t play finals, both teams finished with more wins than last season which is awesome.
I’ve heard a rumour they are keen to continue again next season.
This season saw the introduction of different divisions in U12 to assist with better batting
techniques, with only 9 players taking the field, we saw better scoring options along the ground,
and less of the big bash type shots. Division 1 introduced the principle of when you are out, you
are out, with all kids totally accepting of this new rule. Some fine tuning of the rules hopefully in
the off season will help this age group transition to U14 more successfully than what has previously
occurred.
Thank you to Pete Mernagh who coached Division 1, along with assisting Division 2 coach, Jason
Rosenzweig at training on Monday nights.
Clayton Page had the task of coaching our Division 3 team, which effectively was the previous U10
age group. It was great to see some former great Tanunda Cricketing Names coming through the
ranks…..Goers and Reu to name a few. They’ll be playing A Grade before we know it!
We had great participation at T20 Blast, with over 15 kids registering, and feedback received was
this is a great lead in to Division 3 cricket, after 1 or 2 seasons of Milo Cricket.
Thank you to James Madden for running our Milo Cricket Program this season.
Personally, I’d like to thank the great support from the Committee, running over 100 juniors is no
easy task, especially finding coaches, fielding teams etc.
Thank you also to the parents who stepped up and assisted with umpiring, assisting at training,
scoring (not easy now having to count balls), and providing lollies and fruit. Without continued
parental support, we would not be able to get teams on the park each week.

Under 16s Coaches Report
It’s that time of the season when we sit down and reflect on the season that was. It’s probably no
secret to parents or on-lookers that Under 16 cricket in the Barossa Valley and probably other
associations is battling. Participation levels are decreasing as more and more distractions seem to
interrupt the traditional Saturday morning sport.
Tanunda has not been immune to this. So, on that note I thank Stuart Swan and the committee for
their unwavering commitment to the Under 16 grade. Every selection week I would get a
communication from Stuart just making sure numbers were OK for the upcoming game as he had
players ready to come up from the Under 14’s if need be. It’s a crucial age group given the
progression to senior cricket.
I’d like to thank the core group of parents who came along to support their sons & daughter (Chloe),
Shane Manning for taking on the team manager role and a special thanks to Nick Judd for his
continual stepping up for any job but most notably for doing the bulk of the scoring. Nick & Jacob
Judd are true club people always looking for something to do and always offering to help, together
with continually practising their skills. Any success they get is well deserved.
On to the cricketers. What this season has done for me is reinvigorate my love for the game. I have
a core group of 8 to thank for that. The enthusiasm that came with every training, the desire to
come to training to learn to have fun was exceptional, I enjoyed hanging out with them. Every coach
that I spoke too commented on the enjoyment each and every player seemed to have every Friday
night regardless of the result, which is testament to them as individuals. Did I mention we won 2
games in a row? Tommy Heuzenroeder was even talking finals mid-January!
At various times throughout the season each player had their own moment to shine, but this season
was not necessarily about individual performances it was about a collective group, participating in
a sport they all love and want to play.
Good luck next year.
Matt
