PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear Parents, students and staff, This is my final newsletter article for Waikerie High School. As many will know I have decided to retire from the Education Department after 43 years of service. I have been blessed with a wonderful career in which I have worked with, many amazingly talented and passionate staff and parents who worked in partnership with the school to ensure their child’s school was the best that it could be and finally students who with support achieved their dreams and pathways. Waikerie High has been one of those places and it has been a real pleasure to finish my career here.

Earlier this week we had our very successful Presentation evening. Our Guest Speaker was former student Professor Wayne Tilley who heads up as Director of the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, University of Adelaide and Hanson Institute, Wayne’s partner Dr Theresa Hickey, his parents and friends also attended. There were many special guests and presenters including Mr Tim Whetstone Member for Chaffey, Mr Leon Stasinowsky and his wife Lynette, Mr Richard Hall Rotary, Ms Jenny Boyd Zonta, Mrs Sandy Neindorf Rainmoth Gallery, Mr Clint Frankel and Mrs Kerry Woolston Riverland Trade Schools for the Future, Mr Phillip Kroehn Director Waikerie Central Irrigation Trust, Mr Mark McLean Riverhaven Enterprises and Mr Con Karvouniaris Education Director Berri. All of these guests including our talented master of ceremonies, school captains Ebony Neideck and Hayden Shaw made the night very special. Congratulations to all the award winners for 2017 whose efforts were recognised on the Presentation Night and others who will be recognised with certificates and medals in our last school assembly on Friday.

To our very special Year 12’s it’s with an element of sadness that you leave us however we celebrate your achievements this year and look forward to hearing about your story into the future. Many of you have already begun to make your mark on us and the world around you. Some will be taking a deep breath before you begin. Year 12 while a stepping stone or transition to the future will not define you in years to come that will be up to you in what you do now.

Much of what we heard from our guest speaker Professor Tilley was about having:

set goals

ambition and a dream to strive for

resilience – not giving up

strategies to face the many challenges ahead

identified support groups to help you along the way

looking out for the unseen opportunities that arise

These are challenging times and as one of the older brigade in our community I am reliant on you our Year 12 students to make a difference to our world, whether it is here in the Riverland or beyond.

I want to thank a number of you who have supported our school and I over the past 3 years:

The all members on the High School Governing Council thank you for all your hard work and energy. It’s not easy representing a community, even harder when Principals ramble on a little (passionately). To our Chairperson Jenny Phillips thank you for the energy and guidance you have provided the council and school over the past twelve months.

To our Staff, I have had the privilege to work with many great staff members here at Waikerie and I wish you well in the future. The community is fortunate to have dedicated professionals like yourself who give so much to make sure your students are successful.

To our students I have been fortunate to be part of your journey in learning and the support for our school has made my final years in teaching memorable.

Our school faces many challenges in the future. The excitement of STEM Works with its $2.5 million dollar build for our Science Laboratories, Maker Spaces and Technology Computer Aided Design areas to support STEM learning will enhance the opportunities for all our students. While being a little disruptive next year the end result will be very beneficial. How we better utilize our developing Learning Hub to support all learners will be a major development based around our professional development in Visible Learning. The many other projects ready to go in 2018 including painting and floor covering to buildings, ongoing grounds work including storage sheds, the management of old infrastructure to support learning all on top of delivering a comprehensive learning program.

Mrs Rachael Sparrow who is on maternity leave at present

Ms Sarah Koch – a very successful teacher here for the past 2 years has won a permanent position at

Glossop High School

Mrs Rachael Lawson – who will be teaching Spanish at the Primary School and hopefully supporting us

here at the High School

Adelaide

Mr Sam Parsons has won a permanent position at Minlaton Community School

Mr Hayward Paynter – has transferred to Jamestown Community School

successful in taking the school onto the next level.

Mr Dion Higgins takes over the role of Middle School Assistant Principal

The final timetable for all students will be distributed when they return to school. Farewell to our Principal We wish Rob all the best in his retirement. Last weekend we celebrated not just his three years at Waikerie High School but also his extensive 43 years in Education. While at Waikerie he has been passionate about continually improving student learning and encouraging every student to achieve their best. We thank him for his hard work and commitment to our school. I wish all students, staff and parents a safe and Merry Christmas.

Craig Griffiths Assistant Principal Senior School

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Another busy and successful year has come to an end. Some of the programs that I have been fortunate to work on this year are:

Visible Learning Program – aims to teach students to take more ownership for their learning and how they learn. Ask your child what ‘learning intentions’ and ‘success criteria’ are.

Operation Flinders – a fantastic program that challenges young people and helps them to develop confidence by bushwalking in the Flinders ranges for 8 days.

Page 5: 2017 WAIKERIE HIGH SCHOOL ... - waikeriehs.sa.edu.auwaikeriehs.sa.edu.au/docs/newsletters/2017/waikerie_high_school... · This is my final newsletter article for Waikerie High School.

White Ribbon program – the school is working towards full accreditation so that we can educate the community about prevention of violence towards women.

It has been a privilege to work in the position of Middle School Principal this year and I hope I have made a difference in terms of student wellbeing and learning in Years 8 -10. I am excited about my new role as Senior School Assistant Principal next year which will bring a new range of challenges. I wish Rob McLaren the best in his retirement and I am also looking forward to working with Craig Griffiths as Principal and Dion Higgins as Middle school Assistant Principal, as well as all staff, next year to continue the positive progression in the school. I wish all students and their families a safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Thank you to Robyn Ebert for sharing her expertise on cake decorating and loaning us her supplies. Stage 1 Food & Hospitality This semester the Year 11 students have been doing assessments around hotel menus, high teas, and alternative dietary needs. MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIAL WORKER

SRC presented the White Ribbon Breaking the Silence Schools Program assembly in week 6. The assembly provided students with information about how the White Ribbon program supports the school in regards to

respectful relationships. The Program supports schools to bring about a commitment to stop violence against women. It builds on existing initiatives to strengthen a culture of respect and equality at all levels of the school community – through curriculum, role modelling from staff, policies and procedures, domestic violence education programs and strengthened family and community partnerships. Last week this was discussed in home groups each day and in the extended learning program. By the end of next year Waikerie High School will be a White Ribbon school. The program provides;

Safer, more respectful and inclusive schools

Calmer classrooms and more productive schools

Increased awareness and understanding of violence against women and principles of gender equality

Reduction in violence supportive attitudes and behaviours

Evidence-based and evaluated program with proven capacity to result in long-term positive cultural change

Supported by Departments of Education across Australia

Supportive not additive – builds on and integrates with initiatives already underway in schools

Adaptable to individual school needs, resources, and context
