UTSA TO TRAVEL TO SUNSHINE STATE TO FACE FIU ON SATURDAY NIGHTUTSA (5-2, 2-2) will make the program’s second-ever trip to the state of Florida and its first outside the state of Texas this season on Saturday, Nov. 4, to face FIU (5-2, 3-1) in a Conference USA contest. Kickoff in the second all-time meeting between the Roadrunners and Panthers is set for 6 p.m. Central at Riccardo Silva Stadium in Miami, Fla. UTSA is one win away from becoming bowl eligible for the second straight season under head coach Frank Wilson.

TUNING INSaturday’s game will be broadcast live on STADIUM (KMYS-CW 35 in San Antonio). Ron Thulin (play-by-play), Max Starks (analyst) and Madi Morris (reporter) will call the action. The contest also can be heard live in San Antonio on Ticket 760 AM. Andy Everett (play-by-play) and Jay Riley (analyst) will handle the call. The pregame show will begin at 4 p.m. CT and there will be a 45-minute postgame show. The broadcast also can be heard live online at http://ticket760.com and via the free all-in-one iHeartRadio app.

GAME 79Saturday’s contest will mark the 79th game in UTSA football history and the 40th away from the Alamo City. The program holds a 37-41 overall record, including a 16-23 road ledger.

A LOOK AT FIUFIU ran its record to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in C-USA play with a 41-30 road victory at Marshall on Oct. 28. The Panthers are averaging 22.6 points and 390.1 yards of offense per game and they are allowing 26.3 points and 396.9 yards per contest. Quarterback Alex McGough has completed 121-of-196 passes for 1,513 yards and seven touchdowns and his favorite target is Thomas Owens, who has caught 40 passes for 728 yards and five TDs. Alex Gardner is the top rusher with 456 yards and a pair of scores on 111 carries. Linebacker Treyvon Williams leads the defense with 46 tackles, including four for loss and a sack, while defensive lineman Fermin Silva has registered a team-best 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. Head coach Butch Davis is in his first season with the Panthers and owns an 84-45 overall career record.

SERIES HISTORYSaturday will mark just the second meeting between UTSA and FIU. The Roadrunners won the only previous matchup, 16-13, on Oct. 11, 2014, in San Antonio. UTSA has played only one other game in the state of Florida, a 41-37 setback at Florida Atlantic on Sept. 27, 2014. Additionally, the Roadrunners have a 2-3 all-time record in games played in the Eastern Time zone.

LAST MEETINGUTSA forced five FIU turnovers, including a fumble on a kickoff return that led to Sean Ianno’s game-winning field goal with 50 seconds remaining, and the Roadrunners slipped past the Panthers, 16-13, on Oct. 11, 2014, at the Alamodome. UTSA took advantage of three fumble recoveries and a pair of interceptions in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The final turnover turned out to play the biggest role in the outcome. After Ianno knotted the score at 13 with a 27-yard field with 1:54 left to play, Duke Wheeler forced and recovered a fumble by Glenn Coleman at the FIU 26 on the ensuing kickoff. Ianno split the uprights from 39 yards out with 50 seconds left to give UTSA its first lead of the night. The Panthers then moved the ball to near midfield after a 19-yard pass from Alex McGough to Dominique Rhymes and a 5-yard run by McGough. However, with only nine seconds on the clock, McGough was forced to throw deep and Triston Wade picked off the Hail Mary attempt as time expired to secure the win. A complete recap of last year’s contest can be found on page six.

LAST TIME OUTUTSA used a ball-controlling offense and a stiff defense to cruise to a 31-14 victory over UTEP in Conference USA action on Saturday night at the Sun Bowl. The Roadrunners rushed for 205 yards and threw for another 188 in tallying more than 34 minutes in time of possession. UTSA’s defense held the Miners to 243 total yards and came up with a pair of interceptions in winning for the third time in the series in El Paso. Nate Gaines and Devron Davis each recorded a pick and helped the Birds limit UTEP quarterback Zack Greenlee to just 8-of-29 passing for 133 yards. La’Kel Bass and King Newton posted five tackles apiece to lead the defense. Meanwhile, Tyrell Clay (71 yards), Dalton Sturm (67 yards) and Jalen Rhodes (66 yards) provided a potent ground attack for the visitors. Sturm, a senior quarterback from Goliad, also threw for 188 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-30 passing. Greg Campbell Jr. led all receivers with five catches for 40

STAYING CLOSE TO HOMEThe 2017 schedule is keeping the Roadrunners close to home. UTSA will not leave the state of Texas until this weekend when the Birds fly to Florida for the Nov. 4 matchup against FIU in what will be their eighth game of the season. In fact, the Roadrunners are only scheduled to leave the state one other time during the regular season when they travel to Ruston, La., for a Nov. 25 matchup against Louisiana Tech. UTSA has won six of its last eight games played in the Lone Star State, including three of four on the road this season. The Birds own a 29-24 all-time record inside the state borders and are 14-11 against teams from Texas.

REMEMBER NOVEMBERUTSA owns an all-time record of 14-8 in games played during the month of November. Despite having to play three road games, the Roadrunners were 2-2 in November last season, including a 45-25 upset of Middle Tennessee nearly one year to the day from this Saturday’s matchup at FIU.

SEVEN ROADRUNNERS ON NATIONAL AWARD WATCH LISTSSeven Roadrunners have earned spots on national award watch lists. Senior defensive end Marcus Davenport is one of a record 109 players on the Wuerffel Trophy watch list. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel, the award goes to the player that best combines exemplary community service with athletics and academic achievement. Davenport also was named one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award, which focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Davenport recently was added to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list for college football’s best defensive player. Senior wide receiver Brady Jones was named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell, which recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation. Junior punter Yannis Routsas was added on Oct. 26 to the watch list for the Ray Guy Award, which honors the nation’s best punter. Senior wide receiver Josh Stewart joined 44 other offensive players with ties to the state of Texas on the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch list. Senior quarterback Dalton Sturm was one of 47 players on the preseason watch list for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top senior or fourth-year junior signal caller and recently was cut to 20 finalists. Sophomore linebacker Josiah Tauaefa is one of 48 players on the preseason watch list for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year. Meanwhile, senior Shaq Williams was one of 55 players named to the preseason watch list for the John Mackey Award, which recognizes the nation’s top tight end.

UTSA PAIR COLLECTS C-USA WEEKLY AWARDSMarcus Davenport and Josiah Tauaefa both have been named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week this season. Tauaefa shared the weekly award on Sept. 25 after the sophomore all-conference linebacker registered five tackles, one quarterback pressure, one pass breakup and a fumble return for a touchdown to help lead UTSA to a convincing 44-14 victory at Texas State. Davenport garnered his first career C-USA Defensive Player of the Week certificate on Oct. 23 after the senior all-league defensive end turned in a career-high-tying 11 tackles — including three for loss and a pair of sacks — and a 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the 20-7 win against Rice.

DEFENSIVE ATTACKThe UTSA defense has made its mark with an attacking style this season. The Roadrunners lead C-USA in eight different defensive statistical categories and they rank in the top 10 nationally in four. Defensive coordinator Pete Golding’s group is giving up just 294.7 yards per game, which leads the league, and has held five of seven opponents to 300 yards or less, including a pair to fewer than 200 yards. The Roadrunners limited Southern to just 149 yards, breaking the school record for fewest yards allowed, and they yielded just 198 to Texas State

a week later. UTSA also tops C-USA in defensive touchdowns (3), first downs allowed (101), passing yards allowed per game (172.4), red zone defense (62.5%), rushing defense (122.3), scoring defense (17.4), and third-down conversion percentage defense (.277).

CREATING HAVOCPart of the reason for UTSA’s defensive success has been the ability to create pressure. UTSA has registered 53 tackles for loss, 18 sacks, 19 quarterback pressures, nine interceptions and 25 pass breakups through its first 28 quarters of the season. The Roadrunners rank second in C-USA and 17th in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) with an average of 7.6 TFLs per game. That statistic has been the result of a team effort, as 22 different players have taken part in a stop behind the line of scrimmage for a total loss of 205 yards. Marcus Davenport leads the way with 12 tackles for loss, while sophomore defensive end Eric Banks has 6.5 and senior linebacker La’Kel Bass and junior defensive lineman Kevin Strong Jr. have posted 5.5 and five, respectively.

SCORING DEFENSENot only does UTSA lead C-USA in scoring defense by yielding just 17.4 points per game, a statistics that ranks 14th nationally, the Roadrunners have scored three times on defense themselves this season. That number leads C-USA and stands fifth among all FBS teams. UTSA has a pair of fumble return touchdowns from Marcus Davenport and Josiah Tauaefa and an interception return for a TD by Devron Davis.

SACK ATTACKUTSA is getting to the opposing quarterback on a regular basis this fall. The Roadrunners have posted 18 sacks for an average of 2.57 per game, which ranks fourth in C-USA and 32nd nationally. Marcus Davenport leads all players with 6.5 sacks, while senior linebacker Marcos Curry has 2.5 and Kevin Strong Jr. has a pair. Additionally, UTSA has turned in 19 QB pressures in the first seven contests, led by Davenport’s seven.

NO FLY ZONEThe UTSA defense has proven difficult to pass against this season, as the Roadrunners lead C-USA and rank 12th in the FBS in passing yards allowed (172.4 ypg). UTSA has picked off nine passes this fall, including three interceptions in the 51-17 triumph over Southern and two in each of the last two contests. Senior safety Nate Gaines leads the way with three interceptions, while sophomore cornerback Clayton Johnson became just the fourth player in program history to record two picks in a game when he pulled off that feat in the 20-7 win against Rice on Oct. 21.

DOMINANT DEFENDERMarcus Davenport has proven to be a dominant force on the defensive line for UTSA in his senior season. The preseason all-conference selection broke three UTSA career records during the first month of the season and ranks in the top 11 nationally in a pair of statistical categories. The 6-7 defensive end broke Jason Neill’s previous career sacks record of 14 after dropping Baylor quarterback Anu Solomon for a 6-yard loss late in the first quarter of the season opener. He posted a career-high 2.5 sacks against North Texas and another two against Rice and now owns 20 during his UTSA tenure. In the home-opening win over Southern on Sept. 16, he registered three quarterback pressures — all in the first quarter — to move the preseason All-Conference USA selection past Neill’s former standard of 17. He now has seven QB hurries on the year, which stands second on the single-season list behind his own school record of eight set in 2016, and 20 for his career. The San Antonio Stevens High School product, who is a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award and Wuerffel Trophy, posted his 25th career tackle for loss against Southern Miss, giving him sole possession of the program’s career mark ahead of Neill’s 23.5. He added a career-high four TFLs at North Texas and another 3.5 in the Rice win and now has a school-record 12 this fall and 32.5 for his career. Davenport, who leads UTSA’s defensive linemen and ranks second on the team with 34 tackles, stands seventh in the FBS with 1.7 tackles for loss per game and 11th nationally with 0.93 sacks per contest. During a two-game stretch in October, Davenport registered 19 tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, one PBU, one forced fumble and a 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Rice. He was named C-USA Defensive Player of the Week on Oct.

23 for his career-high-tying 11-tackle performance versus the Owls and he was added to the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list two days later.

MR. RELIABLEUTSA senior La’Kel Bass has been a reliable contributor on the second level of the defense this fall. The linebacker leads the team with 40 tackles and he has tallied 5.5 tackles for loss, one sack, a quarterback hurry and a fumble recovery. The St. Louis, Mo., native has stepped up his game with the start of C-USA action, as he has registered 28 tackles, including three TFLs, through the first four league contests. Bass, who tied a then-program single-season record with 11 tackles for loss as a junior last season, has posted 127 tackles, 16.5 TFLs, six sacks, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and a pass breakup during his two-year career.

OFFENSIVE BALANCEUTSA has displayed a balanced offense this season. UTSA ranks third in C-USA and 30th among FBS teams in total offense with 449.3 yards per game. Further, the Roadrunners are averaging 219.9 yards per game on the ground (2nd/C-USA) and 229.4 yards per contest through the air. UTSA is one of just three FBS teams averaging at least 220 yards passing and 220 yards rushing along with Auburn and Ohio State. The offense exploded for 502 yards in the 51-17 win against Southern on Sept. 16, as the Roadrunners racked up 335 yards through the air and added 167 more on the ground. UTSA scored on its first seven possessions — a program first — in rolling to a 48-0 halftime lead, the most points scored in a half in school annals. The Roadrunners provided quite the encore one week later with a school-record 569 yards of offense in the 44-14 win at Texas State. UTSA churned out a program-best 357 rushing yards and added 212 passing on its way to posting back-to-back 500-yard outputs for the first time in school annals. The Roadrunners tallied 469 yards, including 367 through the air, against Southern Miss and they turned in

their second 300-yard rushing game of the season with 314 as part of a 448-yard output in the 20-7 win against Rice.

CONTROLLING THE CLOCKUTSA has controlled the clock in each of its first seven games this season. In the season-opening win at Baylor on Sept. 9, the Roadrunners possessed the ball for 38 minutes and 52 seconds, including 20:53 of a possible 30 minutes in the first half. UTSA held the ball for 31:45 in the 51-17 victory over Southern, 35:21 in the 44-14 triumph over Texas State, 36:07 against Southern Miss, 31:41 versus North Texas, 30:25 in the 20-7 win against Rice and 34:25 in the 31-14 victory at UTEP. The Birds are averaging a league-leading 34:05 in time of possession per contest, a mark that ranks fifth among all FBS teams, and they have a combined advantage of 57:12 this season.

SUSTAINING DRIVESOne of UTSA’s keys to controlling possession has been the ability to sustain drives. The Roadrunners already have logged 18 drives of four minutes or longer through the first seven games this season. UTSA had three of its six longest drives by time in the 17-10 win at Baylor, including a 16-play, 75-yard march that resulted in a 7-yard touchdown pass from Dalton Sturm to Josh Stewart just before halftime. UTSA put together a 17-play, 85-yard scoring march that chewed up 8:28 off the clock in the 31-14 victory at UTEP, the longest drive by plays and time this fall. All totaled, UTSA has registered 12 drives made up of 10 or more plays this fall.

EFFECTIVE IN THE RED ZONEThe Roadrunners have scored on 20 of 21 trips inside the red zone this season. That equates to a 95.2-percent conversion rate, a mark that stands second in C-USA behind this week’s opponent, FIU (100.0 percent), and sixth nationally. UTSA has made the most of its chances with 12 touchdowns and eight field goals on trips inside the 20-yard line.

STEADY STURMDalton Sturm has provided a steady hand for the offense this fall. The senior quarterback is completing passes at 65.4 percent clip (121-185), which ranks second in C-USA and 19th in the nation, and he also stands 13th among FBS players with a league-leading 157.4 passing efficiency rating. Sturm has thrown for 1,563 yards and 13 TDs this season and those numbers include a school-record 367 yards and three touchdowns against Southern Miss. The Goliad native also has proven dangerous with his feet, as he has rushed for 382 yards and a score, including a career-high 98 rushing yards in the season-opening win at Baylor. Sturm is the Roadrunners’ career leader for passing TDs (47), passing efficiency (139.5) and completion percentage (59.8) and he ranks second on the school’s career lists in pass attempts (699), completions (418), passing yards (5,146), passing yards per game (166.0), total offense (6,210), total offense per game (200.3) and touchdowns responsible for (53).

RUSHING UP THE CHARTSJunior running back Jalen Rhodes is rushing up several UTSA career charts. The Rowlett native registered his third career 100-yard game on the ground with a career-high 174 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries in the 44-14 win at Texas State. The Rowlett, Texas, native also topped the century mark with 102 yards on 20 carries in the 17-10 road win against Baylor on Sept. 9. Rhodes leads UTSA with 562 yards and five rushing TDs on 104 totes this season and he is averaging 5.4 yards per carry and 80.3 yards per game. He has piled up 1,631 career rushing yards, which ranks third on the all-time list behind Jarveon Williams (2,393) and David Glasco II (1,752). Rhodes has averaged 52.6 yards per game, good for second behind Williams (55.7), and he has racked up 17 rushing touchdowns and 19 total scores, both of which stand third all-time.

CLAY BREAKS OUTThe emergence of Tyrell Clay at tailback has given the Roadrunners a potent one-two punch in the backfield. The senior from Corpus Christi has rushed for 445 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 78 carries this season. Clay, who is averaging 5.7 yards per rush, ran for a career-high 153 yards on just 11 totes in the 20-7 victory against Rice. That marked the 18th 100-yard game in school history and stands as the sixth-best total by a Roadrunner. Clay, a former walk-on, broke loose for a 73-yard dash late in the first quarter of that game, the seventh-longest rush in UTSA history. He added a team-high 71 yards in the 31-14 road victory at UTEP in his last outing.

BROTHERS OUT WIDEThe duo of Josh Stewart and Kerry Thomas Jr. has more in common than being senior wide receivers for the Roadrunners. The two are also brothers from College Station, Texas. Stewart, a preseason all-conference pick, hauled in five passes for 54 yards and the first score of the year in the 17-10 road win against Baylor on Sept. 9. He added two catches for 16 yards and a TD in the 51-17 home-opening victory over Southern and five receptions for 101 yards and a score against Southern Miss. Stewart now leads the team with 352 yards and three TDs on 25 receptions this season. Thomas Jr. caught four balls for 59 yards and the go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter of the historic season-opening victory against the Bears, and he tallied 75 yards and a score on five catches versus Southern. Despite missing most of a three-game stretch in October, Thomas Jr. has 272 yards and the three TDs on 17 receptions this fall. The brothers also

appear prominently in the school record book. Stewart set a UTSA single-season mark with 682 receiving yards on 36 catches in 2016 and recently became the fourth Roadrunner to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for his career (1,034). Thomas Jr. owns single-season records of 52 receptions in 2015 and eight receiving touchdowns last year. Additionally, Thomas Jr. is UTSA’s career receiving TDs leader with 16 and he ranks second with 109 receptions and 1,449 receiving yards. He needs 21 receptions and 29 yards to surpass Kam Jones’ school standards

CAMPBELL EMERGES IN C-USA PLAYGreg Campbell Jr. has emerged as one of the team’s top receiving threats with the start of Conference USA play. The junior wide receiver tied a school record with 10 receptions for a career-best 108 yards in the league opener against Southern Miss, and that yardage total is tied for fifth on the UTSA single-game list. The former prep quarterback at Humble Atascocita High School has 24 catches for 272 yards, both of which ranks second on the team, after entering the season with just five receptions for 36 yards for his career.

NEXT MAN UPOne of the keys to the offense’s success this season has been the consistent play of the line. Led by the senior trio of Stefan Beard, Reed Darragh and Austin Pratt, the group has helped the offense average 449.3 yards per game, a figure that stands third in C-USA and 30th in the FBS. Those numbers have been registered despite the loss of two key members of the line. In the season-opening win at Baylor on Sept. 9, senior left guard Kyle McKinney left the game with an injury on the Roadrunners’ second possession and was replaced by fellow senior Juan Perez-Isidoro. UTSA went on to rush for 220 yards and pass for 155 more in the 17-10 victory. Perez-Isidoro was injured in the 51-17 triumph over Southern, a game that saw UTSA pile up 502 yards of offense. Junior transfer Jordan Wright was the next man up at left guard for the Texas State contest, and all the Roadrunners did in that 44-14 win was set school records for total (569) and rushing (357) yards. UTSA topped the 300-yard mark on the ground for the second time this fall with 314 in the 20-7 win against Rice. The offense has shown balance throughout the fall, as the Birds rank second in the league (24th/FBS) at 219.9 rushing yards per game and seventh in C-USA with 229.4 passing yards per outing.

SPLITTING THE UPRIGHTSUTSA place-kicker Jared Sackett is off to memorable start to his college career. The freshman is 12-for-13 on field-goal attempts, including 4-of-5 from 40 yards or longer. He leads C-USA in field-goal percentage (.923) and field goals per game (2.0), marks that rank second and third, respectively, among FBS players. Sackett, who did not kick in the season opener at Baylor, drilled his first collegiate attempt from 28 yards out in the 51-17 win against Southern. The Fort Worth native was good from 21, 27 and 43 yards out in the 44-14 triumph over Texas State and he split the uprights on all three attempts against Southern Miss, including a season long of 44, which is the ninth-longest field goal in program history. He was 2-of-3 at North Texas with his first miss of the year sailing just wide left from 46 yards out as time expired in the first half, and he made both attempts in the 20-7 victory over Rice and his only try from 20 yards in the road win at UTEP. Sackett also has made 21 PATs to give him a team-high 57 points on the year and is second in C-USA and 11th in the country with 9.5 points per game.

SPECIAL TEAMS WEAPONUTSA punter Yannis Routsas has proven to be a valuable special teams weapon for the Roadrunners. The junior from Houston is averaging 40.7 yards per punt and he has booted six of 50-or-more yards, including a season-long 61-yarder against North Texas. Routsas, who was added to the Ray Guy Award watch list on Oct. 26, has pinned opponents inside their own 20-yard line on 17 of his 29 punts. He has helped UTSA’s punt return defense yield just five returns for a total of 11 yards. That equates to an average of 2.2 yards per return, which ranks first in C-USA and 13th nationally. Routsas, who also serves as the Roadrunners’ holder, stands second in program history with a 40.61 career punting average and owns the single-season standard with his 42.0 average in 2016.

    « Last time vs. FiU »Utsa 16, FiU 13Oct. 11, 2014

san antOniO, texas (aLamOdOme)SAN ANTONIO — UTSA forced five FIU turnovers, including a fumble on a kickoff return that led to Sean Ianno’s game-winning field goal with 50 seconds remaining, and the Roadrunners slipped past the Panthers, 16-13, on Saturday night in their annual Homecoming game at the Alamodome. The win snapped a program-record-tying four-game losing streak for UTSA, which saw its record improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA play. FIU (3-4, 2-1 C-USA) entered the game with a national-leading 21 takeways, but it was the Roadrunners that took advantage of three fumble recoveries off a school-record six forced fumbles and a pair of interceptions in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The total matched the five turnovers the Roadrunners forced against Bacone in the inaugural Homecoming game back in 2011 and was one shy of the school-record six in the season-opening win at Houston on Aug. 29. The Roadrunners killed clock with three consecutive running plays to set up Ianno from 39 yards out for a chance to claim the lead. The senior from Pflugerville calmly booted his fourth career game-winner with 50 seconds left to give UTSA its first lead of the night, 16-13. The Panthers then moved the ball to near midfield after a 19-yard pass from Alex McGough to Dominique Rhymes and a 5-yard run by McGough. However, with only nine seconds on the clock, McGough was forced to throw deep and Triston Wade picked off the Hail Mary as time expired to secure the win. Wade, the senior Jim Thorpe Award candidate, finished with a team-high 11 tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery to go along with his school-record 10th career pick. Fellow senior Robert Singletary added 10 stops, including a school-record 4.5 for loss, three sacks, a UTSA-record two forced fumbles, one pass breakup and a quarterback hurry to help lead a defense that held FIU to 259 yards of offense. Offensively, quarterback Austin Robinson came off the bench to throw for 144 yards on 14-of-17 passing and the redshirt freshman added 65 yards on the ground. The Houston native entered the game late in the first quarter after Blake Bogenschutz, who made the first start under center by a true freshman in program history, exited with an injury. FIU jumped out to a 10-0 lead with the benefit of good field position off a pair of turnovers. Giovani Francois sacked Robinson on third down on his first series of the game and forced a fumble that was recovered by Denzell Perine, who returned it 15 yards to the UTSA 21. That set that stage for a 43-yard field goal by Austin Taylor on the third play of the second stanza. Later in the second, an FIU punt that was not fielded hit a UTSA player and was recovered by Niko Gonzalez at the UTSA 28. Four plays later, McGough, who threw for 141 yards on 11-of-25 passing, found Jonnu Smith on a 15-yard scoring connection and Taylor’s extra point gave the visitors a 10-point cushion. The Roadrunners responded with a nine-play, 74-yard drive that was highlighted by a 37-yard scamper from Robinson — the team’s longest rush of the year — and capped by a 2-yard TD run on an option by Jarveon Williams with 39 ticks left until halftime. UTSA tied the score at 10-10 on a 42-yard Ianno field goal midway through the third stanza, but FIU reclaimed the lead when Taylor connected from 24 yards out with 11:03 left to play.

UTSA PAIR HAS NFL TIESTwo UTSA players have significant family ties when it comes to relatives that have played in the National Football League (NFL). Sophomore defensive tackle King Newton is the son of Nate Newton, who was a three-time Super Bowl Champion (1992-93, ’95) and six-time Pro Bowl offensive guard (1992-96, ’98) for the Dallas Cowboys. Meanwhile, senior wide receiver Marquez McNair is the nephew of the late Steve McNair, who played quarterback in the NFL from 1995-2006 after winning the 1994 Walter Payton Award (NCAA Division I-AA’s top player) and finishing third in the Heisman Trophy balloting.

WORTH THE WAITUTSA may have been delayed one week longer than the majority of FBS teams to play its season opener, but making history with the program’s first-ever win against a team from a Power 5 league in the 17-10 road victory over Baylor on Sept. 9 made it worth the wait. UTSA previously was 0-9 against Power 5 teams before the seven-point win in Waco. In fact, the Roadrunners were the second-to-last FBS team to kick off the 2017 campaign (Houston played its opener at Arizona later that night). Hurricane Harvey forced the postponement of the originally scheduled season opener against Houston on Sept. 2, and officials from both schools will look to reschedule it in a future season.

ROADRUNNERS ROSTER MAKEUPUTSA’s 111-man roster features 25 seniors, 26 juniors, 18 sophomores and 42 redshirt or true freshmen. Eighty-eight Roadrunners hail from Texas. There are five players from both California and Florida, three from Mississippi and two each from Louisiana and Tennessee. The squad is rounded out with a player each from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

TV BIRDSAll 11 of UTSA’s regular season games this fall have been selected for broadcast. The Roadrunners, who have seen their last 56 outings appear over the airwaves, will see that streak reach at least 60 this season.

FEW CAN CALL A DOME HOMEThe Roadrunners are one of only three FBS teams to play their home games indoors. UTSA, which boasts a 20-18 all-time mark inside the Alamodome, joins Syracuse (Carrier Dome) and Idaho (Kibbie Dome) as the three FBS programs to play in enclosed facilities. With Idaho’s transition to FCS after the season, UTSA and Syracuse will be the two remaining FBS dome teams in 2018.

PRESEASON C-USA ACCOLADESFour Roadrunners were named to the Preseason All-Conference USA Team. Deep snapper Matt Bayliss, defensive end Marcus Davenport, offensive lineman Austin Pratt and linebacker Josiah Tauaefa all earned a spot on the squad in a vote by the league’s head coaches. The quartet marks the highest number or preseason all-conference honorees in program history.

WILSON INKS NEW FIVE-YEAR CONTRACTThe University of Texas System Board of Regents approved in August a new five-year contract for UTSA head coach Frank Wilson that will run through the 2021 season. The new contract guarantees $900,000 for the 2017 season, an increase to $950,000 for 2018 and $975,000 for each of the following three seasons for a total of $4.775 million. It replaces his previous contract, which guaranteed $3.5 million through the 2020 season.

UP NEXTThe Roadrunners will open up a two-game home stand next Saturday, Nov. 11, when they host UAB. Kickoff between the C-USA West Division foes is slated for 6 p.m. at the Alamodome and the game will be televised on KCWX-TV in San Antonio.

Introduced as UTSA’s second head coach on Jan. 15, 2016, Frank Wilson guided UTSA to a six-win season and its first-ever bowl appearance in his first season at the helm of the Roadrunners. The momentum continued into 2017, as Wilson and his staff signed the No. 1-ranked recruiting class in Conference USA according to Rivals.com.

Armed with more than a decade of coaching experience in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and a proven track record as a highly successful high school head coach, the New Orleans native has had an immediate impact on UTSA in his short time in the Alamo City. Wilson’s debut campaign made history, as he led the Roadrunners to the 2016 Gildan New Mexico Bowl to tie the NCAA modern startup program record by reaching a bowl game in their sixth season.

After leading UTSA to a second-place finish in Conference USA’s West Division with a 5-3 league ledger that included upset wins against Middle Tennessee (45-25) and Southern Miss (55-32), Wilson saw seven of his players earn all-conference honors. Josiah Tauaefa garnered Freshman of the Year, first-team all-conference and all-freshman team accolades at linebacker, while defensive end Marcus Davenport and safety Michael Egwuagu were named to the second team. Long snapper Matt Bayliss, offensive tackle Jevonte Domond, safety Jordan Moore and wide receiver Josh Stewart all collected honorable mention certificates. Additionally, Tauaefa was named to the Football Writers Association of America Freshman All-America Team, a first for the program.

Wilson came to UTSA after a six-year stint as the running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at LSU from 2010-15, where he also served as associate head coach for his final four seasons with the Tigers. He also has been an assistant coach at Tennessee (2009), Southern Miss (2008) and Mississippi (2005-07).

While at LSU, he was recognized as the nation’s top assistant coach at his position in 2011. Wilson also was named the 2011 Recruiter of the Year by Rivals.com, the 2014 NFL.com Top Recruiter in College Football and the 2015 Scout.com SEC Recruiter of the Year.

As the recruiting coordinator at LSU, Wilson led the Tigers to back-to-back top-five recruiting classes in 2014-15 among five total groups that ranked among the top 10 nationally. He served as the lead recruiter for a long list of prominent players, including Odell Beckham Jr., La’el Collins, Jeremy Hill, Jarvis Landry, Tyrann Mathieu, Zach Mettenberger and the nation’s No. 1 overall recruit in 2014 in Leonard Fournette, a 2014 Freshman All-SEC honoree and consensus first team All-American a year later.

Overall, Wilson has coached or recruited 29 individuals who have made it to the NFL. That list includes Beckham Jr., Collins, Fournette, Hill, Landry, Mathieu and Mettenberger along with Lamin Barrow, Kendell Beckwith, Alfred Blue, Malachi Dupre, Ego Ferguson, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Jerald Hawkins, Kenny Hilliard, Anthony Johnson, Deion Jones, Kendrick Lewis, Terrance Magee, Ronald Martin, Dexter McCluster, Denarius Moore, Eric Reid, Stevan Ridley, Duke Riley, Trai Turner, Mike Wallace, Spencer Ware and James Wright.

In six seasons at LSU, Wilson developed six running backs that were selected in the NFL Draft, including first-team All-SEC performers in Fournette, Hill and Ridley. During his tenure, the Tigers posted a 61-17 overall record, captured the 2011 SEC Championship and appeared in the National Championship Game that same season.

Under his guidance, LSU rushed for at least 200 yards 39 times, including 12 300-yard games. The Tigers also recorded 45 100-yard individual rushing performances and four 1,000-yard individual rushers.

Wilson joined the LSU staff after spending the 2009 season at Tennessee, where he coached the wide receivers under Lane Kiffin.

Prior to joining the Tennessee staff, Wilson spent the 2008 season as the running backs coach/recruiting coordinator at Southern Miss under Larry Fedora.

From 2005-07, Wilson served as the running backs/assistant special teams coach at Mississippi, where he recruited prominent future NFL stars Kendrick Lewis and Mike Wallace. He also developed a first-team all-conference running back in Green-Ellis.

Wilson joined the Rebels’ staff after serving one year as director of athletics for the New Orleans Public School System after spending three-and-a-half seasons as head football coach and offensive coordinator at O. Perry Walker High School.

Wilson led O. Perry Walker to two District 10-4A championships and the Louisiana Class 4A State Championship game in 2002. He was honored by the NFL as the 2002 Louisiana Coach of the Year and was voted by his peers as the Louisiana Class 4A Coach of the Year. Wilson also was a finalist for the 2002 Nike National Coach of the Year.

During his head coaching stint at O. Perry Walker, Wilson developed 22 players who earned Division I scholarships, including 11 in 2002 to rank as the nation’s largest high school class of D-I signees. The 2002 team defeated national-power John Curtis Christian School, 20-0, during the regular season, which snapped a 136-game district winning streak for John Curtis and marked the first time that team had failed to score in 303 consecutive games, a national record.

Wilson spent three years as an assistant coach at Edna Karr High School, also in New Orleans, from 1997-2000. He served as offensive coordinator at Edna Karr during the 1999 season in which the team reached the Class 3A state finals and recorded its best statistical season on offense in the program’s history.

Wilson got his start in coaching as a student assistant at his alma mater, Nicholls State, working with the running backs while he finished his degree. While in Thibodaux, Wilson helped coach the first 1,000-yard rusher in school history and was part of the biggest turnaround in NCAA history at the time for the Colonels, who improved from 0-10 in 1995 to 8-2 in 1996.

A three-year letterman at Nicholls State, Wilson earned honorable mention all-conference honors as a running back his sophomore year.

Wilson attended Geneva University in Beaver Falls, Pa., his freshman season, earning conference Freshman of the Year honors as a running back and kick returner. He also earned first team all-conference honors and was an honorable mention NAIA Division II All-American.

Wilson received his bachelor of arts degree in general education from Nicholls State in 1997.

Wilson and his wife, Tiffany, have three children: Alaina, Sabree and Frank IV.

WACO, Texas (AP) — UTSA turned one of its dreams into a reality after having to wait an extra week to open the season. For Baylor, the results in their first two games under coach Matt Rhule have been more like a nightmare. “Last year, we always talked about us being dream chasers -- I wanted them to envision it, to dream about it, and to aspire to want to be there,” second-year UTSA coach Frank Wilson said. “And we’re all grown up from that now.” Dalton Sturm threw for 155 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 98 more yards as UTSA beat the Bears 17-10 on Saturday night for its first-ever win over a Power Five team. “It feels amazing,” said Sturm, the senior and former walk-on who started his 21st consecutive game. The Bears are 0-2 for the first time since
