With Cards needing to win at Wrigley, Fowler returns to familiar ground

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 2 hrs ago (…)

CHICAGO • Throughout the past week, as Dexter Fowler tested his knee running sprints, tracking down fly balls and in the batting cage out of sight, he did not hide his plan to return this weekend, someway, somehow, at Wrigley Field.

He shared that with anyone who asked.

He has made good on that wish.

Two days after he cut and dashed around Busch Stadium's center field to test his sore and swollen left knee, Fowler is back in the lineup against his former team, the team that he helped lead to a World Series championship a year ago. Fowler will bat fifth and play center as the Cardinals look to even the series and find a grip in the NL Central race. The Cubs lead by four games, and this is no small curve in the season for the Cardinals.

If they win, the Cardinals have five games to play against the Cubs and a three-game gap to overcome.

If they lose, the Cardinals have a five-game gap to overcome and only five head-to-head games remaining against the Cubs.

This is, for the season, the rubber game.

Michael Wacha, who has had his struggles against the Cubs this season, will start for the Cardinals opposite Kyle Hendricks. It's the one game of this series where the Cardinals don't have the clear ERA, WHIP, or whatever edge on the mound. Though, few pitchers have been as good as recently as Wacha. He's won his past three decisions, and he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of them, while also pitching at least six innings.

Carpenter's shoulder needs rest to heal, but it's ready for rest of season

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 5 hrs ago (…)

CHICAGO • The home run Matt Carpenter drove toward the left-field bleachers late Saturday was an outward sign of the improvement he’s felt internally for days.

Regardless of how long the Cardinals’ season goes from here, Carpenter believes he’ll be able to play daily despite persisting irritation in his right shoulder. A cortisone shot earlier this month reduced the inflammation, and though there is still bursitis and bone-on-bone contact flaring up, Carpenter feels he can contribute at closer to full strength.

“I got to the point where I couldn’t play through it,” Carpenter said. “I’m to a point now where I can play through it. It’s still not gone. It’s one of those things that until it gets a full chance to recover from it, it’s I think something that will linger.”

He said it will not require surgery at season’s end.

The solo homer in the eighth inning was Carpenter’s 20th of the season — a mark he reaches for the third consecutive year. He walked in an earlier plate appearance Saturday, and that had been how he’s contributed for the Cardinals since return from the shot. In seven previous games, all of them starts at third base, Carpenter had walked 12 times and reached base 16 times total. He’s raised his on-base percentage to .383, though his batting average stayed steady at .239.

In the Cardinals’ 4-1 loss Saturday, he also had a series of defensive plays at third that included two diving spears, including one in the seventh that saved a run.

He said the repetition at third has made him “more comfortable” at his previous position, and that the improvement in his shoulder has made him more capable on throws.

Nine innings after he returned from a swollen left knee, Dexter Fowler had a swollen right hand that may limit his availability Sunday. The Cardinals’ center fielder was hit on the hand — on the outside of the palm, just under his little finger – in the ninth inning Saturday, and X-rays taken at Wrigley Field showed no structural issue. He said the swelling and his ability to grip a bat would probably dictate whether he could play Sunday.

Fowler started Saturday for the first time in a week and singled twice before reaching base a third time with the bruise. The switch-hitter bruised his knee during the previous homestand and had been waiting for swelling to relent so he could take the field.

“Still swollen a little bit,” he said rubbing the knee with his left hand before looking back at his right hand. “We’ll see how it feels.”

There have been times when Carlos Martinez, once a teenage shortstop good enough to sign with Boston, has made a defensive play off the mound that leaves his manager marveling. His confidence was never a question. On Friday, after a missed double play that caved in on him, Martinez had a costly defensive mistake for the third time in five starts.

Mike Matheny suggested that doubt had crept into the pitcher’s play.

“We can do all the work we want but we’re just going to have to get to that place like we talked about with his pitching: control the emotion, control your mind, control your body, all at the same time,” Matheny said. “That is something that came very natural for him fielding the ball. The easiest things become more difficult over time.”

With the calendar shortening, Matheny said there’s still time for them to work on defense, but he’s not sure drills will break the slump for Martinez.

He suggested a play in a game will do it.

“We’re going to see them again,” Matheny said. “He should be an exceptional defender from the mound. He should be one of the best in the game. I believe he will be. That just shows you how fragile this game is. Any part.”

It wasn’t just the words but the mask that got Cubs catcher Willson Contreras fined Saturday and probably suspended at some time by Major League Baseball. In the fifth inning of the Cubs’ win Friday, Contreras and pitcher John Lackey took issue with a ball call by home-plate umpire Jordan Baker, and their complaints got them both ejected. Both players were also fined.

Contreras spiked his mask and that came in contact with Baker, prompting MLB to suspend the catcher for two games. He appealed, started Saturday, and if his hearing isn’t heard until Monday will be able to play Sunday.

Page 21: 2017 St. Louis Cardinalsmlb.mlb.com/documents/3/2/6/254734326/Reds_vs_Cardinals.pdf · 2017 Cardinals Active Roster Batting Stats I Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said asking Lackey, a former Cardinal, to cork his anger is a lost cause and wouldn’t “ask that of a father.” For Contreras, it’s a conversation coming.

“He does play with his hair on fire,” Maddon said of his cleanup hitter. “To walk a mile or even 100 feet in his shoes, I’ve never done that. I want him to still play with that passion and enthusiasm. But (there will be times) to turn your back, and walk away.”

EXTRA BASES

Kolten Wong (back) felt exponentially better Saturday after receiving a battery of treatment that helped loosen up his back. He did not do any baseball activities Saturday, but he said he intended to push to play Sunday, even if it means risking a relapse. … The Cardinals have notified rookie Jack Flaherty to prepare as if he’s making his next start, which is set for this week in Cincinnati. Adam Wainwright (elbow) will throw Sunday, and if it goes well he could be available during the Reds’ series, as well. … Before Saturday’s game, the Cubs activated shortstop Addison Russell, who has been out for more than a month with plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He hit a pinch-hit homer in the eighth, his first homer since July 26. The Cubs imagined easing Russell into appearances at shortstop, where Javy Baez has shined in Russell’s absence.

Cardinals are reeling at Wrigley

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 6 hrs ago (…)

CHICAGO • Although the finished product will evidently lag a few years behind the team, the Cubs have been renovating Wrigley Field at the same time as their roster, and deep within the 103-year-old confines is this buried treasure: the home clubhouse.

With all the modern amenities and a few borrowed from a hip night club, the Cubs’ digs are a subterranean palace, brightened by neon and decorated with a nod to championships, from 1908 to 2016. Down the hall and past a replica of Wrigley’s “W” flag, in a news conference room early Saturday afternoon, manager Joe Maddon repeated a phrase as old as the ivy. He stated “momentum is maintained by pitching.”

But, fittingly for his surroundings, he added a modern twist.

The defense has to help.

The gust of opportunity that the Cardinals rode into the Windy City this weekend is gone, obliterated by the pitching the Cubs got and the defense the Cardinals didn’t in a 4-1 loss Saturday. Kyle Hendricks “maintained” that momentum for the first-place Cubs with 7 2/3 strong innings, and a series of subtle defensive miscues led to two runs that the Cardinals could never overcome. The loss concedes control of their destiny.

The Cubs (82-66) hold a five-game lead on the Cardinals (77-71) with five more head-to-head games to play.

“Right now, we’re going to need some help,” leadoff hitter Matt Carpenter said. “We’ve got to find a way to win (Sunday) and then maybe the Brewers can help us out. And we get another four games against (the Cubs) at home. We’re not out of it yet, but we’ve got to find a way to win.”

Like Carlos Martinez on Friday before him, Cardinals starter Michael Wacha sped through the first three innings Saturday. He needed only 25 pitches to get his first nine outs, and by the start of the fourth he had faced only 10 batters. It took him 27 pitches to get through that inning. While the first of his five walks complicated the inning, what cost Wacha was less overt. The Cardinals have not been shifting on Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo during the series, in part because of how they intend to attack him and because of the pitcher’s comfort with a shift.

Twice Saturday he singled to right field – where a shift would have been.

“How our pitchers are attacking him, it’s always going to overrule whatever data we have,” Matheny said.

With Rizzo at first, Wacha walked Willson Contreras. Four of Wacha’s five walks came from the stretch as he felt his timing was just off on his release, leaving his arm dragging and the ball sailing ever so much. With one, Albert Almora Jr. flipped a single to center. That scored Rizzo, but Contreras got greedy for third. Dexter Fowler, back in the lineup after missing a week with a swollen knee, missed on his throw, but it was wide enough to also allow Almora to get to second base.

Instead of an out at third, the Cubs had runners in scoring position.

“I had a chance,” Fowler said. “I had a real good chance. The throw was off line. You’ve got to get an out right there.”

The situation meant the Cardinals played the infield in, and that’s where the fielders stood when Ian Happ clipped a single to right for a 2-0 lead. The runner wouldn’t have been at third to score, the infield wouldn’t have been in without a play, and the inning wouldn’t have been as long. Wacha escaped without further trouble because he struck out Hendricks.

“That,” Matheny said, “was a tough inning to get out of.”

And yet it was like so many others against the Cubs this season. With their win Saturday, the Cubs assured a winning record against their rivals. They’ve won 10 of the first 14, and at Wrigley they’ve won seven of eight. The two this weekend are the first wins against the Cardinals at home with margins of three runs or greater.

While Wacha (12-8) flipped his approach on the Cubs and went to his curve early– he caught Kris Bryant looking at it in the first, got grounders on it in the second and third – Hendricks (7-5) mimeographed past starts. The righthander filled the strike zone with sinkers and changeups, elevating at times for effect. The Cardinals led off the third inning with consecutive singles, and Wacha nudged the runners into scoring position with a bunt. Carpenter, who later homered for the Cardinals’ lone run, walked to load the bases.

Hendricks kept being Hendricks, the kind of pitcher Maddon described who can cool an offense and let momentum simmer. He tested Tommy Pham with a sinker and two offspeed pitches in the dirt. Ahead 2-1 in the count, Pham chopped a changeup into a double play.

The Cardinals wouldn’t get another runner to third until Carpenter tapped it.

In addition to the posh clubhouse, the Cubs have outfitted Wrigley in recent seasons with two new scoreboards and this season a Starbucks opened. A Jostens is nearby for fans to purchase World Series jewelry. There’s a parking lot for Prius cars, by permit only. Left relatively untouched — save for maybe a Wi-Fi upgrade — is the visitors’ clubhouse. It’s a homage to a simpler, cramped time, when apparently players sat in each other’s laps to eat.

It was there, Saturday evening, that Matheny addressed his team’s predicament. He had no new twist on it, no refurbishment. He even apologized for saying the same old thing in the same old clubhouse.

“Play the game,” Matheny said. “I know I’m short on my answer. It’s got to be the same. Play the game. Every one of them from here on out. Whether it’s head-to-head. Whether it’s anybody else. We’ve got to play a little better, and we know we can.”

Goold: Cards pitchers learning, exploiting a pitch that can cut both ways

By Derrick Goold St. Louis Post-Dispatch 6 hrs ago (…)

CHICAGO • Fiddling and shifting his fingers along the seams of the baseball and squishing his thumb at just the right spot, Chris Carpenter sat 15 feet, maybe 20 feet, away from his coach and learned the pitch that would change his career.

Mel Queen, about to become Toronto’s pitching coach, had urged Carpenter to learn baseball’s pitch du jour – the type of fastball sweeping through the game. Queen showed him the offset grip on a cut fastball, or cutter, and then told him he couldn’t throw it in a game until it was just right. So they started by sitting and flipping cutters. Carpenter tilted his wrist, moved his thumb, added a little more pressure, took a little pressure off, and eventually found the right bite.

The Cardinals’ ace took the new pitch from chair to bullpen mound, from bullpen mound to game, and from game to Cy Young Award. Like Dan Haren and Adam Wainwright years later, Michael Wacha this year, and Luke Weaver in the year to come, Carpenter realized the transformative power of the cutter — and its tightrope risk.

When sharp, it can take a pitcher a long way. When sloppy, it just goes a long way.

“Medium-speed mistakes generally go the farthest,” said Derek Lilliquist, Cardinals pitching coach.

“The cutter has a way of turning the biggest, strongest hitter in the league into a Punch-and-Judy slap hitter,” Wainwright said. “It also has a way of turning the Punch-and-Judy slap hitter into a big, strong power hitter. It’s designed to look exactly like a mistake heater and then dart in on the hands or dart to the end of the bat. If it’s designed to look like a mistake heater and it ends up being a mistake heater, it’s in trouble. It’s medium speed, in the zone, and they’re looking for it. Not the best. But a good cutter is devastating.”

Before putting his cutter in “timeout” this season for misbehavior, Wainwright was annually among the leaders in percentage of cutters thrown. From 2013 to 2016, an average of 17 pitchers a season threw the cutter 15 percent of the time or more. Wainwright was around 29 percent, throwing the cutter 29.3 percent of the time last year, the second-highest of any pitcher, according to FanGraphs. This year, only five pitchers feature the cutter more than 15 percent of the time, and the Cardinals have had two of them. They represented the extremes of the pitch.

Mike Leake, at 22.8 percent, struggled. Michael Wacha, at 17.8 percent, has thrived. “I just needed something that was going to be a really good pitch for me, something else, something to dart away from righties and into lefties,” Wacha said.

“Guys are fine as relievers who are two-trick ponies,” manager Mike Matheny said. “But guys can’t expect to get through the lineup three times with just a fastball-changeup (combo), which is what he had. His curveball is a relevant pitch now. His cutter is even more so. He’s using it at a higher percentage by far. He needed that pitch to keep them off his above-average pitches. They were becoming just average because hitters were sitting on them.”

Like a lot of big-league pitchers who have embraced the cutter, Wacha had a slider in college, and as a pro started tinkering with his grip and tightening up the break. In 2013, when he ambushed the majors with his changeup and steep-angle fastball, Wacha threw a cutter 2.7 percent of the time, less than that on purpose. His use of the pitch has increased in recent years, jumping to 16.2 percent a year ago and then this year, when he ranks fifth in the majors in use. He has thrown it almost as much as his best pitch, his changeup.

He’s felt its allure (career-best groundball rate), and its sting. Earlier this season, Wacha allowed two home runs vs. the Cubs and afterward he remarked, “Two cutters, two homers.” Six of the 16 home runs he’s allowed have come on cutters, seven have come on four-seam fastballs. Of course, he’s thrown 800 more of those.

Popularized by Yankees closer Mariano Rivera and a favorite still of dominant relievers, the cutter was called the “it pitch” by Sports Illustrated in 2011. For some pitchers, using it judiciously made them penny-wise. Others got pounded. The Phillies had a rotation full of cutters, led by Cliff Lee, who in turn would inspire lefties like Dallas Keuchel. Haren revitalized his career with it. The pitch had come a long way since Al Leiter and Rivera were its chief advocates. In 2011, 20 pitchers used it 15 percent of the time.

The best cutter is about 2 mph, 3 mph or 4 mph off a pitcher’s fastball, Matheny said, and its break is sharp and more horizontal than a slider. From a righthander, if a slider is a left-lane exit off the freeway, the cutter is a hard left turn. If it doesn’t take that turn it “cement-mixes down the middle,” a pitcher said.

“Those are homers,” Wainwright said.

Earlier this season, FanGraphs mapped the demise of the sinker: In 2008, more than 101,000 sinkers were tracked by Pitch F/x in the majors. With a fortnight to go, BaseballSavant.com has seen 35,492 this season. Cutters have held firmer. In 2008, the same tech identified 34,154 cutters. This season, 31,457. In an age when strikeout rates and home runs are soaring, a pitch that exists on a high wire — an inch one way and it’s a grounder, an inch the other and it’s a souvenir — isn’t as widespread as velocity, but it has its devotees.

“A cutter is a pitch that is easy to fall in love with,” Wainwright said. “It’s easy for a pitcher to fall in love with it. Once you break a bat with it one time it’s like, ‘Oh! That was awesome! I want to do that again.’ There is something that is highly – what’s the word I’m looking for?”

Addictive?

“Highly,” Wainwright nodded. “It’s a pitch the hitter sees as a fastball, thinks it’s a fastball, and then mishits it. If you’ve got a great cutter, they ground out to first or ground out to third. Quick outs like that — that is, like you said, addictive.”

Wainwright had to fight his reliance on the cutter and has admitted that he can get “cutter-happy” at times. Earlier this season, the pitch spun such trouble for him that he abandoned it entirely. In the first half, batters slugged .500 on Wainwright’s cutter, and the five homers he allowed on 403 cutters were as many as hitters had on his 1,253 other pitches, combined.

Why Wainwright returned to the cutter is the same reason pitchers who can get a feel for it commit to it. Carpenter didn’t feature a changeup, so his cutter gave him something that was different from his fastball, but looked the same. Wainwright needed something that reached the other side of the plate than his sinker, but he could use the same.

When he returned from elbow surgery, Wainwright couldn’t get the extension on his arm to create a sinker, so he leaned heavily on his cutter. Houston’s Keuchel, a Cy Young winner, had the same experience after injury, and threw more cutters a year ago than before in his career. He also saw his ERA spike by two runs.

Page 23: 2017 St. Louis Cardinalsmlb.mlb.com/documents/3/2/6/254734326/Reds_vs_Cardinals.pdf · 2017 Cardinals Active Roster Batting Stats I Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP

The lack of a two-seam fastball “made me throw more cutters and then I wasn’t locating very well and that was getting hit around,” Keuchel said. “I think there could be an argument (it was costly). The cutter is so valuable to me for getting guys off the outer half of the plate. There is a slim margin, especially if it’s not at a higher velocity.”

Or, as one NL hitter put it: “A bad one and you get bug-eyed.”

‘what was that?’

Colorado’s Nolan Arenado, a candidate for the NL MVP this year, can still remember the first cutter he saw, coming off the fingertips of former Cardinals farmhand Michael Blazek.

“What was that?” he recalled.

In Class AA, against the Cardinals’ Springfield affiliate, Arenado saw his first cutter and then a swarm of them. Blazek, followed by Seth Maness and then Trevor Rosenthal. He said no team in the Texas League threw more of them that year, 2012, and Lilliquist has an idea why. The whole organization “was watching Carpenter destroy people with his cutter. It was the pitch you had to have.”

After finding his grip with Queen’s help, Carpenter eased his cutter into his games. He would throw it six, seven times a game and use it on fastball counts against mashers like Juan Gonzalez. Over time, he figured out how to make it sharper, slower, harder, faster, and even saucer like a slider. During Carpenter’s recent visits with the big-league team, Weaver has quizzed Carpenter on the cutter and toyed with different grips. Wacha and Weaver have what Carpenter did not — a swing-and-miss changeup — but they both want what he got: quicker outs, or another way to get them. Wacha has the feel, and the risk has become reward. Weaver seeks it.

Knowing the pitch can cut both ways, Weaver is experimenting now.

Worst case, it becomes a slider. Best, he’s got a new pitch to love.

“I believe the cutter is going to be a big pitch for me, it just isn’t yet,” Weaver said. “I know that I have to keep working and working until it is. It can be a hard pitch to hit. It won’t be easy.”

Wrigley weekend has familiar feel

Benjamin Hochman

CHICAGO • Welcome back to the normalcy of ordinary.

It was fun for a little while there, wasn’t it? The Cardinals played extraordinary baseball. Classic baseball. Playoff baseball.

But now, after a pair of Chicago afternoons, they’re back to simply being a regular team, flawed and helplessly chasing the studs of the division — and perhaps at this point, it’s hopefully chasing them.

The Cardinals earned this opportunity to play meaningful games at Wrigley. After an average few months, they won 11 of 14.

They arrived in Chicago three games back.

They’ll leave at least four back, and maybe five.

“Sometimes, we can’t take advantage of the big opportunities,” Cards outfielder Dexter Fowler said, after Saturday’s 4-1 loss. “They make mistakes, we’ve got to capitalize.”

And the big names on offense reverted to, for a pair of key games, the names they were before this season began.

Tommy Pham, Paul DeJong and Jose Martinez had hit so well this season. In the two losses, they went a combined three for 22 with two walks.

Pham had the biggest at-bat of Saturday’s game — bases loaded, one out, third inning, no score.

And he grounded into a double play.

“It’s been good pitches against them,” manager Mike Matheny said after Saturday’s loss. “Martinez is taking good at bats. Pham gave a little start yesterday. But overall you can’t take two games and think too much about them.”

Then which one is it?

Are you not supposed to “think too much about” two days of lackluster hitting, because it’s just a small sample of an overall and otherwise great season?

Or, should you think too much about them? It was, after all, 22 precious at-bats with the season on the line, and they mustered three hits.

I think it’s fair to acknowledge the former but then seriously point to the latter.

“Every single game I’ve played against Chicago, which have all been at Wrigley … have been close games for the most part,” said DeJong, the midseason call-up who leads the team in homers. “I want to get some more wins here. I don’t like losing here, especially at this point in the season when we got so close to them. It’s not over yet, but we’ve got to find a way to win games.”

That’s what stinks. They might find a way to win even the majority of their final games. But they don’t have enough games to catch the Cubs or wild card Rockies, without a lot of help from some other teams.

“We’re fighting and clawing and doing everything we can,” outfielder Stephen Piscotty said.

It was actually after another big game between Chicago and the Cardinals, when sports lexicon was given this fiery phrase: “They are who we thought they were!”

Yes, the NFL’s Bears beat the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, and Cardinals coach Dennis Green shouted in his postgame news conference: “They are who we thought they were!” Meaning the Bears were a beatable team that Arizona “let off the hook.”

Well, the St. Louis Cardinals are what we thought they were.

Page 24: 2017 St. Louis Cardinalsmlb.mlb.com/documents/3/2/6/254734326/Reds_vs_Cardinals.pdf · 2017 Cardinals Active Roster Batting Stats I Player G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB CS AVG OBP

And that’s an ordinary team.

The plan this spring was catching the Cubs. The Cards signed the Cubs’ Fowler. And the Cards anticipated that Aledmys Diaz, Stephen Piscotty, Randal Grichuk, in particular, would generate offense. They haven’t often. And the bullpen, marred by injury and instability, has blown ballgames. And Adam Wainwright has struggled. And remember Mike Leake?

The Memphis infusion was fun. Luke Weaver, DeJong, John Brebbia and so many others have saved the season. But for only so long.

The Cardinals are what we thought they were — and that is Not Chicago.

We’ll spend the winter analyzing the Cards’ chase for an All-Star hitter or two.

But for now, we’re at Wrigley in the autumn of the season, watching ’17 slip away because the Cubs, alas, are still the Cubs.

“They’re a good squad, and they’re going for blood, as we all are,” Fowler said.

The Cubs are a season-high 16 games over .500. Pitcher Kyle Hendricks, with his tantalizing stuff that kissed corners Saturday, looks like Hendricks of ’16.

Oh, and Addison Russell is off the DL. And in the most Cubs way ever, his first at-bat Saturday was a raucous home run, which led to a rocking curtain call.

Sobering and Wrigleyville don’t often go together. They do this weekend when talking about the Cardinals.

In the cramped visiting clubhouse Saturday, it was a somber postgame as 2015, when the Cards’ 100-win season came to an end, haltingly, in the NLDS. I remember slugger Brandon Moss at his locker that October day and something he said. Asked if goals were unfulfilled, he said, “Yes, because we won 100 games, yes because — and this is going to sound cliché — it’s the St. Louis Cardinals. Usually it’s not a one-series-and-done thing.”

It’s the St. Louis Cardinals.

For so much of this century, that meant so much.

But barring some ’11 magic, the Cardinals are just another good-not-great team, looking up at a team that is the new standard. Oh, and of all teams, it’s their danged rival, too.

In 2015, the season ended here in Wrigley. Sure feels like it did in 2017, too.

Today is why they signed Dexter Fowler

By Benjamin Hochman St. Louis Post-Dispatch 15 hrs ago (…)

CHICAGO • This is what the Cardinals signed him for, a game such as today, to beat the Cubs the way he used to beat the Cardinals.

Dexter Fowler is back, as you might have read, playing for center the Cards and hitting fifth.

They signed Fowler to generate offense, to improve the defense (hmmm) and to help the Cards catch the Cubs – the team Fowler helped catapult ahead of the Cards to begin with.

So here we go, the Cards are four back from the Cubs, and they must win today (3:05 pm first pitch) to simply claw back to where they were when they arrived to town.

“He's had some good games here for us in our uniform -- I've seen too many games here where he was wearing theirs,” Cards manager Mike Matheny said before the game. “But he's an impact.”

Some Dexter numbers heading into today:

• This season against the Cubs, Fowler is 7-for-37, slashing .189/.388/.297. At Wrigley this season, he does have a homer.

• He's 0 for 1 with a walk against today's Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks.

• Since the All-Star Game, Fowler has slashed .270/.393/.434. In the first half, he slashed .248/.336.488.

• Baseball-reference.com breaks down each at-bat due to the intensity of time in game. They have low-leverage situations, medium and high. For this season, Fowler is slashing best in his high-leverage plate appearances (87 of them): .274/.379/.575.

• This season, Fowler has struggled defensively, sometimes rather conspicuously. For the season, his Ultimate Zone Rating (a telling advanced stat on fangraphs.com) is minus-4.8. Last year for the Cubs, playing here at Wrigley, he was plus-1.

“This park is different, how plays a little different,” Matheny said, “and it's a spot where he's been quite a few times, so it's a spot where he'll be more comfortable.”

Before the game, the former Cub Fowler was in the Cardinals training room. When a reporter who covered him with the Cubs walked by, Fowler waved him into the training room to talk. When St. Louis reporters asked to interview Fowler, he declined comment.
