Dear Prospective Attendee,

On behalf of the FASEB Science Research Conferences program, we would like to

invite you to participate in our 2017 conference series.

FASEB SRCs are held annually at several locations worldwide, with an average of

100 to 150 attendees per conference. These intimate settings allow attendees

to have in-depth discussions about the science presented, its future, and the

contributions they hope to make in their respective fields. Each meeting spans five

days, allowing time for established scientists to share their work and for trainees to

participate in Meet-the-Expert Sessions. Participants also have the opportunity to

present their research either as short-talks or during poster sessions. In addition,

the SRCs provide a welcoming environment for scientific discourse, collaboration,

and opportunities to mentor the next generation of researchers. Please join

more than 4,000 researchers who will be participating in one or more of the 31

conferences this year. We look forward to seeing you!

FASEB Science Research Conferences (SRCs) are a continuing series of small, intimate interdisciplinary conferences that explore new approaches in research areas undergoing rapid scientific advances.

We invite you to join more than 4,000 fellow attendees at these exciting and engaging conferences exploring and discussing topics in your field.

Registration InformationRegistration TypesSingle Occupancy: includes a single guest room for one attendee.

Double Occupancy with Another Attendee: includes a double occupancy room shared with another paid attendee.

Double Occupancy with Guest: includes a double occupancy room shared with your personal invited guest. Guests receive meals, and lodging. Guests may not attend general sessions or poster sessions. Offsite Attendee: The offsite registration fee includes meals and meeting fees.  If you choose off-site registration, you are responsible for securing and paying for your lodging, as well as local ground transportation to and from the meeting. 

Registration Fees ▶ Registration fees vary depending upon your conference location and registration type.  If you register after the early-bird registration deadline, an additional $150 will be added to the registration fee.

▶ Fees cannot be prorated or discounted due to contractual arrangements with venues.

▶ Register early to avoid late fees. 

▶ Advanced registration is required.  On-site registration is not permitted. 

▶ Only attendees who have registered and submitted a CV may participate in the conference.

▶ Abstracts are due at the time of registration, if interested in presenting a poster or short talk.

▶ Conference registration closes four weeks prior to the start of the conference.

Career-Oriented WorkshopsFASEB Science Research Conferences include a biomedical research workforce development workshop and/or a career-oriented workshop for trainees (graduate students, postdoctoral fellows) and early-career investigators. These workshops are designed to help prepare trainees and early-career investigators for a variety of career options in the modern biomedical research workforce through broadening their career and skill development outside traditional training. They allow opportunities to promote career/skill development, mentoring, networking, and interaction among the SRC participants.

Meet The Expert SessionsFASEB SRCs include Meet-The-Expert sessions for junior investigators. Junior investigators’ work will be presented to allow opportunities for them to promote interaction with more senior participants of the conference.

Registration and PaymentWhat does the registration fee include?The single and double occupancy attendee registration fees include five nights of lodging (Sunday through Thursday, with checkout on Friday morning), all meals (five breakfasts, five lunches, and five dinners), and access to all scientific sessions and posters. The off‑site registration fee includes all meals (five breakfasts, five lunches, and five dinners), and access to all scientific sessions and posters.

What forms of payment are accepted?FASEB only accepts Visa, MasterCard, and American Express.

I cannot stay at the conference for the entire time. Can the registration fee be prorated?FASEB is contractually obligated to pay for five nights of lodging (official conference dates only) at each conference regardless of the number of nights an attendee chooses to stay at the venue. Therefore, registration fees cannot be pro-rated.

International AttendeesHow can I get an official letter of invitation to attend the conference?During the registration process, there is a check box option for a letter of invitation. Mark this box, and a letter of invitation will be sent to you as part of your confirmation materials once your registration and payment have been processed by the online system.

Abstracts and PostersDo I have to submit an abstract with my registration? No. Submitting an abstract is optional unless you want to be considered for a poster session or short talk.

I need to revise my abstract. Is this possible?Abstracts can be revised and changed until 45 days before the start of your conference. Refer to your registration confirmation email for instructions.

Can I register and submit my abstract after the early-bird deadline date?Yes, as long as there is space available at the conference. A late fee of $150.00 will be charged.

What is the latest date to submit an abstract?Abstract deadline for inclusion in the program and consideration for a short talk is the last day to register for the conference. See page 5.

If I’ve submitted an abstract, will I present a poster?Yes. A poster presentation schedule will be listed in the program provided at the conference.

How do I indicate that I want to give a short talk at the conference?When registering select the “short talk” button. Your information will be shared with the conference organizer. The organizer will contact you if you are selected to present your paper. You will also be allowed to present your poster during the poster sessions.

LodgingWhat do single occupancy, double occupancy, and off-site lodging mean?Single occupancy – one (1) registered conference attendee to a guest room.

Double occupancy – two (2) registered conference attendees sharing one guest room with two beds. Each attendee pays the double occupancy registration fee.

Off-site – the attendee is responsible for arranging for and paying for their own lodging arrangements.

I need to arrive a day before the conference starts and/or stay a day after the conference has concluded. How do I make arrangements for the extra night(s)?After you receive your lodging confirmation from FASEB, you must contact the venue directly to make arrangements for the extra nights of lodging. You are responsible for paying for any additional nights. Please note: in Vermont, additional nights at the dorms are not possible. You must make a reservation at a local hotel. Research the city of your conference for additional venue options at www.faseb.org/src.

Child and Family Care ResourcesAre child care and/or family resources are available?FASEB provides detailed information for each conference site on the Science Research Conference (SRC) website and also provides venue information directly to each attendee. Although FASEB does not provide child care services, attendees are welcome to have guests (including spouses, children, nannies and babysitters) accompany them to the conference to provide such care. FASEB offers an alternative off-site registration fee at all conferences, to accommodate those with special family care needs (the off-site

fee includes the conference and all meals but enables attendees to book their own accommodations). Both the FASEB and venue websites include information on nearby off-site accommodations that can assist attendees with locating licensed child care providers and daycare services. The venue management may also provide any assistance to attendees regarding child/family care issues or concerns.  Each attendee is also encouraged to contact FASEB with any special needs that they may have.

CancellationWhat is the cancellation policy?Cancellations received before the cancellation deadline will receive a full refund less a $250.00 cancellation fee. See the cancellation deadline date for your conference. There will be no refunds issued if the cancellation form is received after the cancellation deadline date.

I cannot attend the conference; can I send someone in my place?Substitutions are not allowed. Each attendee must register and be approved to attend the conference based on their credentials.

This SRC is the only meeting of its kind specifically dedicated to the field of photoreceptor biology. The scientific program reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of this field, encompassing classical biochemistry and structural biology as well as modern imaging techniques and molecular therapeutic approaches. Specific session topics will range from photoreceptor physiology and RPE cell biology to the immune respose to photoreceptor degeneration. The scientific program will include two keynote addresses and invited talks, as well as numerous short talks and DataBlitz presentations that will be selected from submitted abstracts.

The meeting schedule and venue are designed to present the most exciting scientific advances in an atmosphere that encourages informal interactions and collaborations. All attendees will have the opportunity to present a poster, and additional recreational activities will be available to all participants to foster the exchange of ideas and formulate new collaborations. It is anticipated that there will be funds available to support early career researcher attendance.

The SRC for Autoimmunity has an uninterrupted tradition of over 20 years and offers a broad overview of recent advances in the field of autoimmunity in a highly interactive environment. Understanding immune tolerance and its breakdown is necessary to treat autoimmune diseases such as lupus, multiple sclerosis, uveitis, type 1 diabetes, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and many others. We bring together basic scientists with clinicians and industry experts to present and discuss new insights into the triggers, pathogenesis and therapy of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease.

Eight major sessions will cover a broad range of topics in development, pathogenesis and therapy of autoimmune disease, starting with the effects of genetics and environment, through the role of innate and adaptive immune elements as well as the tissue itself, the role of commensal microbiome and metabolism, and finally translational research and clinical approaches. Each thematic session will feature 4 invited speakers and two talks selected from submitted abstracts.

Participants have ample opportunity for interaction and discussion. Spontaneous mingling of junior and established scientists will be strengthened by meet-the-speaker sessions that allow discussions of both career issues and science. The intimate atmosphere, strong emphasis on communication and discussion, and a really close interaction between senior and junior scientists makes this conference unique and memorable to participants.

This SRC is a unique scientific conference, which focuses on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and its functions. The purpose of the meeting is to merge recent developments in molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, and physiology aimed at unraveling the complexities of secretory protein folding, ER stress pathways, lipid signaling, and ER membrane biology, and how failure of these processes lead to pathologies and disease. This meeting will include talks from outstanding scientists, both invited and selected from poster abstracts. The meeting is known for its active discussions, not only during the presentation session, but also during the free afternoons, and especially during the poster sessions. Posters will remain on display during most of the conference and a selection will be advertised in oral poster pitches. The venue, Vermont Academy, is excellently suited for the mingling of junior and established scientists, which will be strengthened by meet-the-speaker sessions that allow discussions of both career issues and science.

Research on the biology of the cilium has seen explosive growth as its essential roles in cell signaling and human disease are now well recognized. Sensory cilia act as cellular antennas that transduce key developmental and physiological signals while motile cilia play an essential role in development and organ function. Ciliary diseases or ciliopathies include the most common life-threatening inherited disease of humans, Polycystic Kidney Disease, as well as retinitis pigmentosa, obesity, and mental retardation; all components of the human syndromic pathologies Nephronophthisis, Bardet-Biedl, Meckel Gruber, and Joubert syndromes. Cilia regulate hedgehog signaling, which is essential for development and has been implicated in PKD as well as basal cell carcinomas and other cancers. Despite advances in our understanding of cilia biology, important questions remain about how cilia are assembled, how they function, and how ciliary signal transduction impacts so many developmental events.

This SRC provides an intellectual nexus for a broad range of cilia investigators including human geneticists, cell, molecular, and developmental biologists, biochemists, and physician scientists. Cutting-edge research presentations provide a current view of technological advances in ciliary imaging, signal transduction, structural biology, and human disease. The meeting also showcases innovative applications of model organisms, such as Drosophila, C. elegans, and zebrafish for fundemental discovery and high-throughput screening approaches that impact therapeutic assay development.

This SRC presents progress in research on diverse aspects of genetic recombination, a critical process that maintains integrity of the genome and that ensures the faithful transmission of the genome between generations. This conference focuses on the study of recombination mechanisms, the impact of recombination on genome integrity, and the influence of other DNA processes on recombination. Many of the recent advances in understanding recombination in normal, pathological, and environmentally stressed contexts have emerged through new combinations of experimental approaches spanning biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, genomics, and cytology. The agenda reflects the diversity of approaches currently used and is specifically geared toward identifying the emerging technologies and concepts that are moving the field forward. The meeting will focus on new, unpublished data in the field and will highlight connections between recombination and other cellular processes, including transcription, replication, cell cycle progression, and other branches of DNA repair. There will be presentations by researchers using diverse model organisms including bacteria, fungi, flies, nematodes, and mammalian cells, as well as in vitro biochemistry and structural biology. The meeting will foster collaboration between researchers worldwide who are interested in the basic and clinical aspects of recombinational repair, particularly in cancer biology.

There will be many opportunities for interaction between established investigators and scientists who are new to the field, and a significant number of the plenary speakers will be chosen from submitted abstracts.

This SRC spans the entire range of investigation in gastroenterology, from molecules to cellular interactions to microbiota to intact organisms. It focuses on comparing and contrasting normal biology/physiology with disease pathophysiology and on providing a clinical context for basic research observations. Eight thematic sessions have been organized to encompass rapidly developing areas in GI research: Monitoring and Responding to the Microbiota; Mucosal Injury and Restitution; Microbiota-Host Crosstalk; Signaling Mechanisms Coordinating Gastrointestinal Homeostasis and Response to Inflammation;) The Stem Cell Niche, Inflammation, and Cancer; Transport and Barrier;) Host-Pathogen Interactions; and Novel Approaches to GI Biology. The format is designed to facilitate the rapid translation of basic biology discoveries into new medically relevant approaches to human disease.

In addition to the platform talks from established investigators and early-career rising stars, a number of abstracts from trainees and young investigators will be selected for short talk presentations, and two poster and two oral presentation sessions of rapid-fire “ePoster” presentations will be held to maximize the number of investigators given exposure. Thus, this conference will not only provide a strong overview of cutting edge GI research but also provide a critical venue for trainees and early career investigators to showcase their work.

This SRC will provide a lively mix of glucose transporter biology, metabolic regulation, and systems biology methods with multiple lectures featuring disease translational themes. This SRCs was originally launched in the early 1990s in recognition of the cloning and characterization of a subset of the major glucose transporter isoforms. It has continued to feature important advances in glucose transporter biology, but has also evolved to embrace emergent topics in metabolic control mechanisms as related to chronic diseases and conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Recent progress in this area has been explosive, and this SRC is timely in helping to fully appreciate the significance of recent developments. A particular focus in 2017 will be neuroendocrine regulation of metabolism, liver metabolism, and skeletal muscle metabolism in health and disease, featuring leading scientists in the field along with faculty in the early stages of their careers. The SRC’s themes align well with challenges faced by the pharmaceutical and biotech industries in identifying new therapeutic targets to combat tractable disease mechanisms.

The conference has consistently attracted major leaders in these fields as well as emergent young scientists. More than 40 scientists worldwide have been invited to speak at the meeting. A dozen prominent scientists will serve as session chairs and discussion leaders. In addition, approximately 16 junior trainees will present short talks from abstracts. There will also be several poster sessions and an open mike session to present exciting data for discussion.

This SRC provides an interactive forum to discuss current developments in the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) field with a particular focus on GPCR kinases (GRKs) and arrestins. GRKs and arrestins work together to regulate GPCR signaling by reducing the ability of receptors to couple with heterotrimeric G proteins and by targeting active receptors for endocytosis. These mechanisms are important for returning cells to their physiological resting states. In addition, GRKs and arrestins are also thought to initiate alternative signaling pathways and to play prominent roles in addiction, cardiovascular disease and other pathological conditions. Consequently there is a major effort to identify small molecules that bias GPCRs for or against GRK/arrestin-mediated pathways or that prevent overcompensation by GRKs and arrestins.

The overarching goal of the meeting is to bring together as many scientists working on diverse aspects of GRK/arrestin signaling as possible in order to facilitate the exchange of novel findings and to stimulate the generation of new hypotheses, collaborations, and approaches. The structural and functional mechanisms of GRKs and arrestins, as well as their roles in biased/non-canonical signaling by GPCRs, in the actions of drugs of abuse, in cardiovascular disease and in cancer will be major highlights of the meeting. Sessions devoted to these topics will foster further studies to combat addiction and disease with the ultimate objective of positively influencing human health. There are many opportunities available for attendees to give oral and poster presentations as well as optional recreational activities to foster the exchange of ideas and formulate new collaborations. It is anticipated that there will be some funds available to support attendance by early career researchers.

This SRC will bring together international scientists from academia and industry for lively discussions on the latest developments in the growth hormone (GH)/prolactin (PRL) family of hormones and their clinical applications. Beyond their classic roles in growth and lactation, these related hormones are increasingly recognized regulators of metabolism, stem cells, aging, behavior, cancer, and perinatal health of both mother and child, via actions on diverse target tissues. They also influence major associated health problems, such as obesity, diabetes, aging, mental health and multiple cancers. We will bring together senior and junior investigators working on all aspects of these hormones, from cell biology, genetics, developmental biology, neurobiology, metabolism, physiology, to their clinical and agricultural applications. Together, we will increase our understanding of how GH/PRL family proteins modulate health and disease processes, forge new collaborations, and accelerate the discovery of new pharmacologic approaches. Speakers from the GH/PRL community and related fields from around the world will share breaking data on a variety of cutting edge topics including genetic mutations in synthesis and signaling pathways, newly identified targets, novel mediators and nodes of critical crosstalk with other players, pituitary stem cells, interactions between peripheral hormones, hypothalamus and brain, and new drug targets/pre-clinical studies.

Trainees are especially welcomed. Many short talks, poster, and travel awards will be selected from submitted abstracts. In addition to a formal “Meet the Experts” session, there also will be many informal opportunities to engage with international leaders in a relaxed setting. This unique opportunity will ensure fruitful discussions, support career mentoring and help to foster new collaborations.

This SRC bring together biochemists, geneticists, molecular biologists, and clinicians interested in the pathophysiology of the leukemias and lymphomas, and the development of novel therapies for these diseases. Leukemia and lymphoma has provided a number of key paradigms for molecularly targeted cancer therapy, as illustrated by the remarkable success of all-trans-retinoic acid for the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia and tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy for chronic myelogenous leukemia. New and promising small-molecule compounds and antibodies targeting epigenetic regulators, surface receptors and downstream signaling pathways are currently under development and will be discussed at this meeting. Added to these examples of targeted therapy, immunotherapy, including checkpoint inhibition and modified T cell-based therapies have emerged as important future anti-leukemia/lymphoma treatments. The meeting will cover a broad range of topics, including hematopoietic stem cell differentiation, identification and study of novel oncogenes and tumor suppressors, mechanisms of action of products of chromosomal translocations, normal and pathologic signaling in hematopoietic cells, aberrant epigenetic/transcriptional control, genomics of hematological malignancies, the role of tumor microenvironment, and the development of new experimental models of hematologic malignancies.

This SRC will highlight the latest research on mechanisms of ion channel regulation and its impact on the physiology of diverse cell types. It seeks to stimulate discourse, seed new ideas, and facilitate collaboration in ways that will accelerate new discoveries about ion channel regulation at both the basic and translational levels. It will also fuel discovery by bringing together scientists applying all of these diverse technical and conceptual strategies to study ion channel regulation across a range of different biological systems. The program consists of nine scientific sessions and a keynote address, as well as two breakout sessions and lunches focused on trainee career development. Scientific sessions are organized around themes, rather than ion channel subtype, to foster crosstalk between fields, and will cover a variety of topics including sensory systems and pain; regulation of neuronal excitability; regulation of gene expression; ion channels in disease; ion channel structure and drug development; recent advances in imaging and ion channel cell biology; regulation of the cardiovascular system and skeletal muscle; regulation of ER Ca2+ stores and other organelles; celebrating Bill Catterall and ion channels. Presentations in these sessions will be made by both new, up-and-coming investigators as well as established leaders in the ion channel field, including several members of the National Academy of Sciences. Each session will also include two short-talks to be selected from the abstracts, with an emphasis on presentations by graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and junior faculty.

This is the leading international conference in lysophospholipid biology, attracting participants from all continents. The focus this SRC is on the physiological and pathophysiological roles of sphingosine 1-phosphate, lysophosphatidic acid and other lysophospholipids. New and established basic scientists, clinical researchers, academics, and industry partners are brought together to share expertise and foster collaboration, thereby accelerating the pace of scientific discovery and facilitating translation from early research to clinical practice. Indeed, the development of Fingolimod, the first oral treatment for multiple sclerosis, is an excellent example of this, as first reported at this conference in 2001.

The conference provides opportunities for substantive interactions between early-stage and established basic, translational and pharmaceutical investigators with an interest in lysophospholipid biology in health and disease. This SRC is an important and unique conference at the intersection of plant development, signaling, cell biology, modeling and genomics. This conference, which has been held every 2-3 years for the past 2 decades is the only meeting entirely dedicated to plant development. Plant growth and development are at the core of agricultural productivity and important for human survival. In addition, because plants evolved multicellularity independently from animals they provide insight into common and unique solutions to coordination of the behavior of cells and tissues. At this SRC, outstanding researchers from around the world present cutting edge research directed towards understanding how different aspects of plant growth and development are controlled in response to intrinsic and extrinsic cues and how those mechanisms are conserved or modified over evolutionary time. The conference format includes invited speakers and speakers selected from submitted abstracts, lots of time for poster viewing and intensive scientific discussions. This SRC will focus on the process of transcription in prokaryotes, from structure/function investigations to transcription networks and system level regulation. In all organisms, controlling the process of transcription is fundamental to gene expression, gene regulation, and development. RNA polymerase, which transcribes genomic DNA into RNA, is the complex protein machine that performs transcription. Additional factors that alter initiation, elongation, or termination of transcription program an amazing variety of developmental pathways. Biochemical and genetic investigations of transcription regulation have a long history of revealing the myriad ways that gene expression can be controlled. Attendees can expect exciting sessions on RNA polymerase structural biology, mechanisms that control initiation, elongation, and termination, regulation of transcription in pathogens, RNA-based control, transcriptional networks, and connections between cell topology and gene expression.

Since its inception in 1991, the FASEB conference on Mechanism and Regulation of Prokaryotic Transcription has been held biannually at Vermont Academy in Saxtons River, VT. It is now considered to be the premier meeting in the field of prokaryotic transcription. We are very proud of the fact that there is so much collegiality and a broad age range at this conference. Approximately half of the speakers are chosen from submitted abstracts and the lively poster sessions are always well-attended by all participants. There will be many opportunities for participants to meet new friends and foster new collaborations.

This SRC focuses on the dynamic nature of mobile DNAs in mammalian genomes and their phenotypic impacts. Topics will encompass mechanistic and evolutionary aspects of diverse types of retrotransposons, including LINE-1 and endogenous retroviruses, as well as DNA transposons and related human genes. Attendees will also explore interactions between these sequences and the epigenome and endogenous machinery of DNA repair and rearrangement. These elements comprise are a major portion of our DNA, and are significant contributors to genomic diversity in the form of structural variation. While the germ line is a well-known site of activity of mobile genetic elements, there is increasing evidence for expression and mobility in somatic cells and in human diseases, particularly cancers. This makes it an exciting time for the field. Moreover, new insights are being gained into roles of mobile elements in shaping gene regulatory networks in normal cells. Finally, harnessing mobile genetics elements as tools for forward genetic screens or gene delivery has provided new capabilities to change the genome. This is a long standing meeting, certain to be thought provoking, animated, and collegial all at once.

The central role of mitochondria in normal cell physiology is evident from human diseases, including metabolic disorders and aging, which are associated with changes in mitochondrial function. This SRC will facilitate an exchange of knowledge and promote collaborative interactions between investigators that study basic aspects of mitochondria with translational investigators engaged in studying mitochondrial roles in human health, human diseases including age-associated disorders, and the aging process. It will gather basic and translational scientists with a broad range of research interests and different levels of experience ranging from established investigators to graduate students. A collegial format will facilitate discussions between all participants with the goal of bringing together their unique insights and integrate them into this rapidly expanding field.

The major topics covered include 1) mitochondrial gene expression; 2) respiratory chain complex assembly; 3) mitochondrial protein biogenesis and quality control; 4) mitochondrial stress in cell signaling and aging; 5) mitochondrial dynamics in development and disease; 6) mitochondrial dna-driven mechanisms of mitochondrial dysfunction; 7) new pathways, biomarkers and technologies to study mitochondrial function; 8) challenges and opportunities in mitochondrial biology and medicine. Through these topics, the most recent advances in the biology, dynamics and regulation of mitochondria will be discussed and linked with the pathophysiology of mitochondrial disorders and the aging process.

Since 1994, this biennial SRC has been devoted to exciting and groundbreaking research on viral, bacterial, fungal, and protozoal pathogens. The combined themes are particularly pertinent regardless of their taxonomic differences as microbes confront similar barriers from the host innate and acquired immune systems, thus indicating both similar and unique virulence strategies.

To promote multi-disciplinary interactions and collaborations, the sessions are organized by pathogenesis theme, and each includes scientists from a variety of fields. This is the only long-standing specialized international conference that regularly attracts virologists, bacteriologists, mycologists, parasitologists, immunologists, antimicrobial researchers, and translational scientists. Notable speakers include Gordon Dougan, Kim Orth, Vern Carruthers, Erica Ollman Saphire, Gerry Wright, Vanessa Sperandio, Russell Vance, and many others. By convening leading scientists with expertise in all areas of infectious disease, this SRC optimizes information transfer, catalyzes provocative discussions, and fosters long-term cross disciplinary collaborations. The 2017 program will include sessions on diverse aspects of host-microbe interactions from molecular, evolutionary, immunological, and therapeutic perspectives. Talks will also include state-of-the-art approaches as well as how to adapt traditional approaches to meet today’s challenges. Finally, the relatively small meeting size, the diversity of fields, and structured and informal interaction opportunities – including three poster sessions, a formal career development session the final morning of the conference, free time in the afternoon, and Meet the Experts sessions – make this an ideal meeting for young scientists to meet established investigators to develop networks of support that will foster career development.

This SRC focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying fundamental aspects of immune cell biology. The immune system has become an increasingly important model system for understanding information processing by signaling pathways, signal-dependent transcriptional regulation, control of genomic integrity and DNA repair, and principles of development from stem cells. Results from deep analysis of the regulation of lymphocyte development from hematopoietic stem cells link this field to a broad range of hematopoietic, oncological, and developmental mechanisms for which the lymphocyte vantage point can be very illuminating. This SRC is distinctive in its focus on the molecular biology underlying immune responses, including genome-wide insights into regulatory function and dysfunction. It also brings together research on B, T, NK, and innate system immune cells so that shared and contrasting mechanisms can be illuminated, both in the mature effector cells and in their developing precursors.

Sessions include (1) early lymphocyte progenitors, (2) mechanisms that underpin lymphocyte development, (3) transcriptional regulation of lymphocyte differentiation, (4) antigen receptor assembly, (5) molecular and physical mechanisms that promote lymphocyte cell fate, (6) b cell activation and neoplasia, (7) the regulation of the immune responses, 8) innate immunity and (9) molecular pathways in innate immunity. The meeting will also include two poster sessions and two workshops consisting of short presentations chosen from submitted abstracts. By highlighting common and contrasting uses of similar mechanisms, the meeting will reveal unexpected synergies between areas of molecular immunology that are traditionally considered distinct. This SRC emphasizes mixing national and international experts with young scientists, including postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, among the presenters in an open atmosphere of scientific exchange.

Intestinal lipid transport and metabolism is of high interest as deregulation of these pathways can directly contribute to several pathologies such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Intestinal lipid transport and metabolism remains one of the most dynamic areas in biomedical sciences, for both basic scientific inquiry and translational research. It reaches across the pathogenesis and treatment of major chronic diseases and includes leading-edge scientific technologies in human genomics, proteomics, lipidomics, bioinformatics, systems biology, and new biological model systems. The 2017 SRC will present new knowledge that can ultimately be translated into clinical benefit for millions of patients not adequately addressed by existing therapeutic strategies. It will provide a unique forum for scientists at all levels to enrich their knowledge base, network, and encourage new collaborations and new ideas, thus moving forward the field of lipid sciences. Major conference themes include lipid transfer proteins, systemic metabolism of intestinal lipoproteins, cholesterol metabolism, lipid droplets formation and mobilization, integrative physiological studies of lipids and lipoproteins, intestinal lipid metabolism in other organisms, chylomicron assembly, and enzymes in intestinal lipid synthesis. This SRC provides an international forum of cutting-edge research by graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and established scientists. This SRC will focus on improving our understanding of the scientific, socioeconomic, clinical, and health policy basis of disparities in cardiovascular health outcomes in the United States, with a view to addressing the challenges posed at every level including complementary and integrative health. Although life expectancy in the United States has increased significantly over the past five decades, key indicators of health outcomes vary markedly by race, ethnicity, sex, socioeconomic status, and geographic location. Cardiovascular disease accounts for more deaths in black and Latino adults than cancer, HIV, and homicide, together. According to the 2013 CDC Health Disparities and Inequalities Report, non-Hispanic black adults are at least 50 percent more likely than their non-Hispanic white counterparts to die prematurely of heart disease or stroke. As a result, health disparities in cardiovascular disease has become an important focus for Congress and the federal government. To draw attention to this issue, this SRC will focus on building a multi-disciplinary approach to addressing health disparities and inequities in the United States. This SRC provides an opportunity for multi-disciplinary teams to develop a roadmap for future discussions on solutions to health disparities/inequities in cardiovascular diseases in the United States. The target audience includes clinicians, health policy makers, epidemiologists, researchers, health educators, trainees at junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students. The conference will include oral, poster, and meet-the-expert sessions and a biomedical research workforce development workshop.

NAD and its metabolites are important regulators of cancer, metabolic disease, autoimmunity, and aging. They play important roles in energy metabolism, function as signaling molecules, and as protein modifications such as ADP-ribosylation. This diversity of function demonstrates the biological importance of NAD and the interconnectivity between cellular metabolism, physiology, and cellular signaling. Recently, significant progress has been made in our understanding of NAD that highlight its broad relevance to human health and disease. This meeting brings together all of the leading experts in NAD biology to one venue with the goal of advancing our understanding of the molecule. Experts come from several NAD relevant fields that include Poly-(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs), Sirtuins, NAD dependent signaling networks, calcium signaling, NAD biosynthesis and the chemical biology of NAD.

Breastfeeding is the normative standard for infant nutrition, and clinical and epidemiological data support clear health benefits for the mother and infant. Public policies have focused on improving rates of breastfeeding globally; however, our understanding of the molecular, chemical, and cellular composition of human milk and its effect on the infant is incomplete. Milk contains more than 700 potentially bioactive constituents comprised of carbohydrates (lactose and human milk oligosaccharides- HMO), proteins, lipids, vitamins, minerals, and others. Technological advancements have made it possible to study many of these milk bioactives. This SRC is the second on this topic and the first outside of the U.S. The 2015 program focused on HMO and microbiota. The 2017 program will additionally include bioactive proteins and lipids, with an emphasis on their effects on cognitive and immune outcomes to the neonate. Sessions will address the interplay between maternal and environmental factors that influence nutrient delivery to the infant pre- and postnatally, as well as developmental programming of infant outcomes during the first 1000 days of life. The conference is specifically designed to foster interactions among established and emerging investigators from all sectors. It will bring together more than 30 invited speakers from across the globe with broad ranges of expertise to share their latest research findings. The keynote lecture will set the stage by reviewing the most recent epidemiological evidence for the health benefits of breastfeeding and current research gaps.

This SRC focuses on the autosomal dominant (ADPKD) and recessive (ARPKD) forms of PKD, autosomal dominant polycystic liver diseases with mild or no kidney involvement (ADPLD) and syndromic forms of PKD caused by mutations in genes encoding for proteins in the primary cilium (ciliopathies). It will bring together investigators from a wide range of different research areas sharing an interest on this topic. The conference seeks to 1) to assemble an interdisciplinary program of basic scientists and clinical researchers at the forefront of PKD research to provide a comprehensive update on recent advances in PKD; 2) to provide a format where trainees and junior investigators can present, discuss and learn, with the goal of exciting them about PKD and inspiring them to become the next generation of PKD researchers; 3) to generate discussion to help resolve unanswered questions in PKD and promote collaboration; and 4) to promote the development of novel therapies for PKD by juxtaposing basic scientists, clinical investigators, and representations of the pharmaceutical industry. This SRC brings together scientists working on biophysical and biological aspects of protein aggregation and connect physical understand of aggregation to its biological consequences in post mitotic cells. The conference will begin with keynote talks by two leading figures, Dr. Virginia Lee and Dr. Sheena Radford. Their talks will highlight the translational aspects and biophysical underpinnings of protein aggregation.

The remainder of the conference will be organized around specific thematic sessions that focus on specific proteins or collections of proteins and work up to uncovering the impact of protein aggregation on cellular processes and disease states. This conference will span a range of topics. These include a discussion of emerging technologies to study protein aggregation in vitro and in cells, advancements in our understanding of cellular stresses induced by protein aggregation, our ability to target the stress response pathways therapeutically as a route to finding cures for devastating neurological and systemic diseases, routes that connect aggregation mechanisms and specific aggregates to disease, methods to target aggregation or particular species in order to cure disease, the emerging synergy between protein aggregation and phase separation in the context of form liquid-like membraneless bodies within cells, and the functional role of protein aggregates, a theme that continues to be paradigm shifting in biology. Taken together these sessions will give the participants an integrative view of protein aggregation and the impact it has on health and disease.

The cross-disciplinary nature of the conference is accentuated by the program, which brings together biophysicists, structural biologists, and bioengineers with cell biologists and clinical scientists.

This SRC focuses on the biology of protein kinases and phosphorylation signaling. Among FASEB’s longest-running SRCs, it brings together a dynamic international community of junior investigators, trainees, and established researchers from a field that is achieving startling new insight and medical breakthroughs. The program will link detailed understanding of protein structure and biochemical mechanism to control of large-scale processes like the cell division cycle, cell morphogenesis, and metabolism.

This SRC will explore the field’s latest research, which is revealing surprising mechanisms of regulation, previously unappreciated subcellular organization, logic of pathways that coordinate diverse intracellular systems. Importantly, derangement of kinase signaling underlies disease, including cancer and diabetes. Drugs targeting kinases and phosphorylation have achieved dramatic cures and promise more, and the conference has consistently offered a robust platform for clinically important work. To foster international scientific connections the 2017 conference will be held at Cambridge University, a world-class academic research hub with outstanding facilities, recreational options, and social venues.

Platform and poster sessions will feature insights from structural and biochemical analysis, as well as emerging research in the control of cell division, metabolism, and cell architecture. The meeting will bring together scientists using a wide range of approaches, from structural biology and biochemistry to proteomics, systems biology, and cell biology. This conference is the only international venue where these broad but closely interrelated topics are discussed at length. As the field of protein lipidation has grown over the past 10 years, it has become highly interdisciplinary. This this meeting allows scientists and biomedical researchers from diverse disciplines to come together, discuss new ideas, and form synergistic collaborations.

Presentations will highlight progress in our understanding of how lipid-modified proteins promote normal physiological processes, with emphasis on their important roles in major human disorders. Topics will also include emerging drug discovery and development efforts. A significant number of submitted abstracts will be selected for short talks, and awards will be given to the top scientific posters. Research snapshop elevator pitch presentations from graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, a specific Meet-the-Experts session and social activities will allow students and postdoctoral researchers to interact with invited speakers, including industry speakers working in drug discovery, and to form potential new scientific collaborations.

Steroid hormone action impacts many aspects of physiology and disease states. Although scientists in the field traditionally focused on how nuclear steroid receptors mediate gene transcription, it is now established that these same receptors exist and function at various cellular locations including the cell membrane and mitochondria. Thus, this conference focuses on the latest advances and approaches to understand how signaling from extra-nuclear and nuclear steroid receptors integrate to produce genomic and non-genomic biological effects. The 2017 conference centers on steroid hormone action in cancer, metabolism, neuroscience, cardiovascular effects, ion channels, and lung disease. It will feature many new speakers and provide the opportunity for trainees to present their work in oral and poster sessions. Most importantly, many productive collaborations between scientists, junior and senior, have occurred from the interactions during this meeting. Junior scientists and trainees are especially encouraged to interact with senior faculty, in multiple venues that encourage this during the meeting. Travel funds for trainees are also a priority of this meeting.

This SRC provides an interactive forum that covers the latest developments in the small GTPase field and presents the newest technological advancements that are being used to unravel the complex roles of small GTPases in human health and disease. Small GTPases (e.g., Ras, Rac, Rho, Cdc42, Rab, Rap, Rheb, and Ral) are essential for key cellular processes such as cell differentiation, proliferation, and migration, as well as the regulation of subcellular events such as vesicle trafficking. These critical functions of small GTPases make them important participants in a wide variety of physiological and pathophysiological processes. The founding member of the small GTPase superfamily, Ras, is the most commonly mutated oncogene in human cancers, and many other small GTPases (including RhoA, Rac1, Rab5, Rheb, and RalA) also play fundamental roles in cancer development and progression. In addition to a strong cancer theme, this SRC will also focus on other biomedically important events, including the promotion of vascular diseases, immunological abnormalities, mental disorders, and metabolic conditions. For these reasons, progress from a number of fields in addition to cancer biology will be highlighted, including neurobiology, developmental biology, computational biology, and membrane biophysics. The meeting seeks to stimulate the cross-pollination of ideas among researchers investigating basic biochemical mechanisms, cell and tissue biology, and translational models to define the diverse functions of small GTPases.

Over the past few years, the “epigenetic” regulation of the genome has become increasingly important to understanding both the etiology and fundamental mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases. Key to epigenetic regulation are two classes of lysine-modifying enzymes, the histone deacetylases (sirtuins and HDACs) and the histone acetyltransferases (HATs).

This SRC is the only conference dedicated to protein acetylation, and will bring together leaders in the field to exchange exciting new fundamental discoveries such as new lysine post-translational modifications (e.g. 3-hydroxybutyryl lysine and palmitoyl lysine) and the how these modifications can regulate transcription, cell signaling, and protein secretion.

A primary objective of the conference is to transfer knowledge and foster collaboration between basic academic researchers, clinical scientists, and industrial researchers to understand how lysine acetylation controls human health and how to prevent and treat a diverse set of age-related diseases that could extend human healthspan and lifespan. A second objective is to foster the development and interests of younger investigators to help support their career development. This meeting is particularly timely because recent development on bromodomain inhibitors is continuing to generate a lot of interests and more clinical data on small molecule modulators of sirtuins and HDACs are being generated.

This SRC focuses on the most recent advances in the fields of signal transduction in the immune system, with an emphasis on the coupling of signaling to differentiation pathways, the development of new technologies for understanding and imaging signaling, interactions between metabolism and lymphocyte activation and differentiation, signaling through mechanotransduction, and signaling through immunomodulatory receptors in cancer. These topics have direct relevance to a number of clinically important areas, including autoimmunity, immunodeficiency diseases, transplantation immunology, tumor immunology, infectious diseases and chronic inflammation. In particular, leukocyte metabolism, the mechanism and feedback of antigen receptor signaling initiation and kinase regulation, immunomodulatory receptors, and cytoskeletal changes that accompany leukocyte activation and migration have provided a wealth of new information that will enhance our understanding of the complex pathways that control immune responses under normal as well as pathogenic situations. As such, the mechanisms and pathways that will be discussed in detail at this conference represent a major source of target leads for the development of new therapeutics to treat immunological disorders and sit at the forefront and intersection of basic and translational research. There will also be sessions that bridge these two types of research. The 2017 meeting is the 9th on the series and features speakers from around the world who will discuss cutting-edge research in the area of immune cell signaling.

This SRC is an important and unique scientific conference where the pivotal role of TGF-β family members, including TGF-βs, nodal, activins, BMPs, and GDFs, in developmental, homeostatic, and pathological processes is explored through formal talks, poster sessions, and interactive and intensive scientific discussion sessions. This field is expanding into previously uncharted areas of biology and human pathogenesis. Program topics include tissue morphogenesis in development and disease, signaling networks and crosstalk, inflammation, vasculature and tissue transformation, tissue microenvironment dynamics in disease, therapeutic frontiers of TGF-β signaling, and homeostatic and metabolic control of growth and disease.

This meeting includes researchers from around the world presenting diverse, cutting edge and forward looking research directed towards a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of TGF-β family signaling: how these factors mediate context- and temporal-specific signals to orchestrate complex developmental processes, how aberrations in this signaling pathway lead to developmental abnormalities and human disease pathologies, and how this knowledge may come to be applied in the clinic. All lectures will be held in an intimate setting with a limited number of participants that is an ideal setting especially for young students and trainees and those who recently entered the TGF-β world to engage into a discussion with world-renowned experts. Speakers are encouraged to present and discuss unpublished data. This meeting brings together a diverse group of cell biologists, developmental biologist, embryologist, biochemists, physiologists, biophysicists, and translational biologists to share the latest developments in different fields.

Learn. FASEB SRCs provide ample networking opportunities for both seasoned scientists and junior investigators, as attendees are encouraged to present posters and short talks, eat meals together, and converse with leaders in the field during Meet-the-Expert Sessions.
