Thank you for taking the time to read this year’s public opinion poll of the Austin community.

I undertook funding this project several years ago, as a longtime citizen of Austin who has watched the

community grow and adapt. As I continue to hear differing opinions about the past, present, and future

of Austin, I am pleased to offer the Zandan Poll to serve as an objective tool to measure how Austinites

really feel about our evolving community.

As with previous years, the 2017 Zandan Poll continues the tradition of analyzing Austinites’ opinions

on important topics, including growth, affordability, and our city’s unique culture. In addition, this year’s

poll also focuses on how Austin views both national and local issues that have been front and center

since the election last fall.

For this public opinion poll, 800+ Austin-area residents were surveyed in early March 2017, ending on

March 13th before the Spring Break holiday. Respondents from the City of Austin as well as others from

Travis, Williamson, Hays, Caldwell and Bastrop counties were included and the survey was offered in

both English and Spanish. The results are demographically representative.

The city has long been home to me after moving here in the 1970’s, attending school, raising a family

and starting several businesses. This survey stemmed from my Austin experience and my professional

curiosity to find a way to scientifically measure how Austin citizens feel about the changes going on

around them and about their connection to the city – whether they are new to the city or have been

long-time residents.

I have conducted survey research and social analytics for more than 30 years, and I know the benefits

it can bring to all civic groups and organizations in fostering productive dialog.

As we embark on the fifth wave of sharing results, my hope is that the 2017 poll continues to be a

resource and inspiration for conversation for the Austin community.

Research Methodology

The Zandan Poll: Voices of Austin Community survey was sponsored, directed, and funded as a gift to the community by Peter Zandan, Ph.D.

Cambia Information Group interviewed 813 Austin-area residents from the entire Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). Interviewing was conducted in early March 2017 and completed by March 13th to avoid the Spring Break holiday. The survey was administered online and could be taken on a computer or on any mobile device and was offered in both English and Spanish.

Cambia used two premier online sample vendors as the primary sample source. Both Cambia and the sample vendor comply with, or exceed, all applicable industry standards published by ESOMAR, the MRS and CASRO.

Respondents were required to be at least 18 years of age to participate. They represented a broad spread across age, income, ethnicity, political interest and area in which they live. Once the data collection was complete, Cambia undertook a careful comparison of all demographics to the 2015 American Community Survey (U.S. Census Bureau, 5-year average) data for the Austin MSA. The Zandan Poll was weighted to Census on the following demographic variables: gender, income, ethnicity, college-educated and children in household. A small number of interviews and questions were removed for concerns regarding reliability.

The final results are demographically representative. Data collection successfully closely aligned to the U.S. Census results.
