Memorial Donations In 2014 an astounding 93% of Pike High School seniors graduated. Nearly half of those graduating had some college credit. Many Pike graduates further their education by attending a university or trade school. But, absent the financial resources, some very talented and hard-working students find they are unable to attend without acquiring a mountain of student loan debt.

Looking back on the experiences that shape us, most Pike High School graduates can recall a teacher, counselor, coach, or administrator who mentored or otherwise inspired us to reach for success. You can express your gratitude by setting up an Annual Scholarship Fund or a One-Time Schol-arship Donation in their name. You may elect to immediately provide the money necessary to fund your scholarship or you may choose to provide funding in your Last Will and Testament. In addition, the type of scholarship fund you select may reduce your income taxes during your lifetime and/or estate taxes paid after your death.

When you provide for a scholarship, you convey the message to the recipient of those funds that education is key, and their success in life is important to you. By naming your scholarship for a teacher who encouraged you and made a positive difference in your life, you honor their legacy.

To learn more about scholarship funding, the Pike High School Alumni Association invites you to call Attorney and Pike High School alumnus, Charlie Ward of Ward & Ward Law Firm, Charlie will be happy to answer your questions, including tax concerns and to help you facilitate a scholar-ship fund that will enable future Pike High School students with economic needs to pursue their educational goals.

Clarence Wood, ’43, passed away on Easter Sunday at the age of 91. He was the father of Dave Wood, ’72; Anita Wood Gaillard, ’73; and Steve Wood, ’82.

One of Clarence’s forever loves was Pike Township. His family called him “Mr. Pike”. He was born in a house on the corner of 62nd St. and Guion Road. He played football and basketball for New Augusta High School. He was active in Pike education, serving on the Board of Education, including terms as Secretary, Vice President, and President. He volunteered with the Pike Township Historical Society and was a member of the Pike Township Lions Club for 45 years, serving as Treasurer and President. He was also a member

Clarence C. Wood, ’43 of the Pike Township Alumni Association, serving on the Scholarship Committee for several years.

He was selected as PHS Alumnus of the Year in 1975 and inaugurated into the Pike Township Hall of Fame in 2010.

Since Clarence’s first love was Pike Township, a scholarship will be awarded in his name. If you wish to donate to this scholarship, please send checks to the Pike Township Educational Foundation, 5353 W. 71st St., Indianapolis 46268. Mark the memo line “Clarence Wood”.

He was a “good” soldier. His was a life well lived.

The Alumni Association has been working very hard to com-bine fun, significant events, and opportunities to help cur-rent Pike students: a way to honor Pike’s past, present, and future.

We are all too aware that $1000 doesn’t go very far toward college tuition any more; however, it is a start. We would like to grow the size of our scholarships. The 2014 year’s scholarships were increased from our traditional $1,000 scholarships to 2 scholarships of $3,000 each because of donations from alumni.

Looking for a way to celebrate the Pike legacy of a loved one? When a pike alumni or supporter passes, families can request that contributions be made to the Alumni Scholar-ship Fund. If contributions in the name of any single person reach $1,000, the family may opt to award a Pike Alumni Association scholarship in that person’s name. If donations do not reach the $1,000 level, they will be added to the Alumni Scholarship General Fund. Thus, the actual number and amount of scholarships may vary from year to year, but the Alumni Scholarship with a $1,000 minimum award may be sustained. When a tribute donation is made, we will in-clude a memorial column, showing who has donated to the scholarship fund in memory of that Pike alumni or support-er.

If you wish to ask that donations be made in lieu of flowers when a loved one passes, please contact the Pike Township Educational Foundation office so they may provide you with contribution details, envelopes, and arrange to track tribute gifts.
