1:15-1:30 Unified Design Software—Mark Pardi, Ohio Concrete This session will discuss a new web-based pavement design application being developed by American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA), the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) Research Foundation and Port-lant Cement Association (PCA). The website, pavementdesigner.org is set to launch later this year and will feature online design tools for all types of con-crete pavement projects. Mark Pardi, PE LEED GA is a Field Engineer and ACPA Ohio Chapter Repre-sentative for Ohio Concrete. He serves as Field Engineer and technical re-source contact for the concrete industry. Mark has worked in the Concrete Industry for 37 years, including Highway Construction, Ready Mix Production and the Concrete Association. 1:30-2:30 Durable Concrete Design, Repair, and Protection—Todd

Spindler & Sean Gallagher, Sika Creating a concrete mix design requires consideration of a structure’s use, exposure, and life cycle. Watertight characteristics, shrinkage control, and corrosion protection are important properties for long lasting durable de-signs. Repair and Protection strategies play an important part for both existing and new structures, to extend service life while minimizing maintenance costs. An overview of these concepts will be presented to assist in developing com-prehensive design strategies. Todd Spindler is the Midwest Regional Manager for Sika Corporation’s Con-crete Division, with 27 years of experience in the concrete production, repair, and protection industries, and 25 years with Sika Corporation as a Technical Service Manager, National Marketing Manager for Concrete Production and Underground Tunneling, and Regional Manager for Repair and Protection. Sean Gallagher is a Senior Project Representative for Sika Corporation based in Ohio with over 32 years of successful construction field experience in the concrete repair and restoration industry, educating the industry for informed decisions, with a reputation built on successful project performance and solutions. 2:30-3:30 The Evolution and Use Of Voided Floor Systems

Tony Johnson, CRSI (Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute) An overview of the voided concrete floor system including a review of historical systems showing an evolution of the technology resulting in modern systems utilizing hollow plastic spheres cast into a flat concrete plate floor system. De-sign methodology will be discussed including an introduction to CRSI’s design guide. Case studies will be presented to show the range of projects which have utilized voided flat plate floor systems across the United States. The presenta-tion will also review the most recent updates to the steel reinforcement specifi-cations as well a review of high strength reinforcing steel development and implementation, and a brief introduction to CRSI Concept program, a web based preliminary design tool for reinforced concrete floor systems. Anthony (Tony) Johnson PE, has been a member of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute’s Regional Manager team since October 2007. He is responsible for providing technical assistance, outreach and education to engineers, archi-tects, owners, contractors, as well as student groups, across the CRSI Midwest Region. As CRSI’s Vice President of Region Operations, he is also actively involved in the development and implementation of CRSI’s promotional strategy across the entire United States and three Canadian provinces. His work also includes the development and management of the CRSI Mill Database, an industry wide statistical and market analysis of all reinforcing products pro-duced for and used in the U.S. construction market. Tony also leads CRSI’s efforts for forecasting the reinforcing steel market, as well as reporting on the market share of reinforced concrete across various vertical construction markets. 3:30-3:45 Program Summary and Comments—Lisa Weaver-Moon,

Ohio Concrete 2017 Central/Southeast Fall Engineering Seminar

October 24, 2017 | 8 AM—3:45 PM | ODOT Auditorium/Columbus, OH

8:00-9:00 Registration - Coffee & Refreshments Sponsored by Sika 9:00-10:00 National Veterans Memorial and Museum Project Profile Rob Ford, Baker Concrete Construction The National Veterans Memorial and Museum is an iconic project for the City of Columbus. The complex structure consists of three concentric concrete rings attached to each other with structural steel. The compound curved arches have ever-changing radii and complicated geometry requiring the use of special techniques, technology and communication techniques to achieve the design intent. A 100% custom formwork system and concrete mix design have been employed to address the challenges of the project. The tour will focus on the execution of the concrete structure, its unique components and special focuses related to inter-trade coordination. Rob Ford earned his Architecture degree from the Univ. of Cincinnati and is the Project Manager for Baker Concrete Construction. He manages pre-construction on design/build, IPD, and traditional design-bid-build projects and has experience in civil, commercial, and health care projects. 10:00-11:00 ODOT Specification Updates Including JMF and Admix-

ture Guidance—Dan Miller, Ohio Department of Transpor-tation (ODOT)

This session will cover ODOT specification updates that have been approved over the past 12 months, and explain the reasons for the updates and impact they may have in construction. Dan will review air content, micro-fines, and design air updates. A discussion of mix designs and their intended uses will also be included in this presentation to further explain the when and where to use a specific mix design. The discussion will also include guidance on the JMF submittal form and aggregate requirements, along with when, why, and how to adjust when aggregates become decertified. From a chemical stand-point, a discussion on topical treatments (evaporation retarders, finishing aids), and use of Type S admixtures will be also provided. Dan Miller, PE is the current Cement and Concrete Engineer for ODOT since March of 2014. He is a native of the Cleveland area and a graduate of Cleve-land State University, where he obtained both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering. After graduation, he worked for North Carolina DOT where he served as the assistant physical testing engineer for 5 years and quality assurance engineer for 1 year. 11:00 - 11:15 Break 11:15-12:15 The P2P Initiative. A Shift to Performance-based Specifi-

cations for Concrete—Todd Surrarrer, Fairborn Cement The presentation discusses the general concept and benefits of minimizing prescription and incorporating performance-based alternatives for concrete mixtures in project specifications . Todd Surrarrer is the technical services manager for the Fairborn Cement Company. Todd has devoted 24 years, and going, to the ready mix concrete industry. Before working for Fairborn Cement, he was an area manager for Smith Concrete, an Oldcastle company. Prior to that, he was a sales manager and quality control manager for Medina Supply Company located in the Akron/Cleveland, OH markets. Todd’s 24 years of industry knowledge, experience and relationships provides a strong background in ready mix operations, mixture design development and optimization, constituent material analysis, process control, jobsite control, block production and quality control, concrete construction and troubleshooting. 12:15 - 1:00 Lunch 1:00-1:15 2017 Project of the Year Award
