Word from the BoardThis handsome exhibition is possible only with the generous support of our volunteers and

donors. We thank BlackRock Center for the Arts for hosting the exhibition. We thank our tireless volunteers who attend to the legion of details. We thank our vendors, our fellow art organizations, and our individual donors who support us with the awards. And lastly, we thank our artists whose talent and inspiration provide the art.

About the Baltimore Watercolor SocietyFounded in 1885, the Baltimore Watercolor Society is the third oldest organization in the

country devoted to the use of watercolor as a painting medium. Since its founding, numerous artists of national reputation have been associated with the Society as members, exhibitors and jurors.

The purpose of the Society is to encourage cultural interest in the development of profes-sional quality, original works of art, executed in aqueous media.

The Society offers its signature artist and associate members opportunities to exhibit in local and regional shows, frequent newsletters, workshops, lectures and demonstrations, and trips to major exhibitions.

The Baltimore Watercolor Society is a 501(C3) non-profit charitable organization, incorpo-rated in the State of Maryland.

I would like to thank the BWS for the challenging opportunity to jury the 2017 Mid-Atlantic exhibition in Maryland. I want to also thank all the artists who submitted their work for this show.

Selecting artwork is never easy. With over 350 entries and only room for 95 paintings, there are some paintings that won’t make it in despite their high quality. I believe that the work I selected stands out in a variety of ways. Of course it is also based on my own personal preferences.

First, I always look for the ‘intangible’: an image may stop me or may want me to take a closer look. Something catches my attention. Maybe it makes me feel something or it awakens some memory in me.

Or, it may just be a beautifully rendered, poetic piece. These are the most important aspects.

Great paintings usually display a personal style or use of color. They may convey a mood or expression. They may have a great composition and design. Often, it is not easy to see

Juror’s Statement

The Mid-Atlantic Exhibition is one of the largest events sponsored by the Baltimore Watercolor Society each year. We are indebted to the artists, volunteers, donors and BlackRock Center for the Arts for its success. Kudos to you all.

As remarkable as the exhibition is, it is just another accomplishment of the members of BWS who for over 125 years have nurtured the art of watercolor and those who create it. Springing from the desire of five women in 1885 to have an

Word from the Mid-Atlantic Chair

opportunity to paint and exhibit together, we have grown to over 600 women and men who continue that tradition. We hope you will join us, both at the Mid-Atlantic Exhibition and at the other exhibitions throughout the year.

all those aspects when looking at small images on a screen.

Second, I’ll look for the artist’s technical skills. While technique is of lesser importance it is essential because it is what I call the tool box to create art. I was careful not to select overly ‘techy’ paintings or beginner work.

If your work was not selected I encourage you to try again next time. Creating artwork is a very personal thing and we shouldn’t just paint to get into a show. Art is about self expression. Juried shows neither validate nor invalidate what we create, in my opinion.

I think the best reason for entering shows is sharing genuine feelings and ideas without the need to please peers or look for acceptance and reward. Ironically, once art comes from that deeper place, all the accolades just arrive without trying.
