Executive Director’s Message to the CommunityReflecting on the past year, I am struck by the passion and commitment of the many individuals who come together, year after year, to ensure Lougheed House continues to thrive, and to meet the needs of our visitors and community. I want to take this opportunity to thank the Lougheed House board, staff, volunteers, members, donors, funders and community partners for your many contributions to Lougheed House’s success in 2017. Your support ensured 2017 was a year of growth and evolution for our organization.

Lougheed House National and Provincial Historic Site is operated by the Lougheed House Conservation Society. Approximately 50% of our operational funding is provided through a Service Agreement with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The Society is grateful to the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Government of Alberta, and the City of Calgary for their support. The Society is also thankful to the proprietors of The Restaurant at Lougheed House, key partners in our success in delivering memorable experiences for visitors.

Last year, the economic environment in Calgary remained challenging for the non-profit cultural sector and Lougheed House was no different, seeing a drop in earned revenues. Attendance also dipped, as we prioritized investments in organizational changes, program innovation, and fund development. These priorities, focusing on developing a more resilient and sustainable organization were informed by the three main priorities of the 2015-17 Strategic Plan: 1) revitalize Lougheed House programming and enhance the visitor experience; 2) build profile and connection and 3) build organizational capacity.

Many accomplishments have been realized through the Plan, revitalizing Lougheed House with strong results in growing our profile and our community engagement, significant growth and diversification in grants revenue and individual giving, and the development of new fundraising and programming opportunities. We also upgraded organizational and governance policies and procedures, as well as our financial and technology systems.

As part of our evolution last year, we restructured; this was carefully considered to move Lougheed House forward. With new expertise in visitor experience, fund development, program innovation and administration we are enhancing efficiencies and organizational capacity. Careful management of expenses, and a delay in the hiring of new staff members, resulted in a surplus which has been reinvested in initiatives to sustain momentum for our evolution.

While in a year of transition, Lougheed House continued to innovate. I am very proud of the team here as Lougheed House won the Alberta Museums Association award for Leadership in Engagement for AlTOURnatives, a unique and accessible community-led series of House tours.

Though our operating environment remains challenging, we are working strategically and prudently to grow Lougheed House for the long-term. The results of our work in 2017 are supporting new and ambitious plans for Lougheed House’s future. We invite you to share in this exciting journey as Lougheed House boldly embraces our community’s future, while reflecting on our diverse and unique past.

Chair’s Message to the CommunityThere are many things that make each community special and among these are its special places. For 127 years, Lougheed House has been an inspiring and enduring presence in the life of our community, reflecting its past, its present and helping to define and shape its future.

In a very real and visible sense, this past year has been one of continuing growth and transition for Lougheed House as many important changes have been made to its structure and processes to strengthen its operations and to prepare for the launch of important new initiatives.

In looking back over the past year, much has been accomplished and there are many successes to celebrate. These include the staging of many exciting new programming initiatives, the sharing of House stories in new and creative ways, the development of new partnerships and the laying of necessary foundations to better position the House for continuing future success.

The many accomplishments of this past year reflect the hard work and efforts of many caring hearts and helping hands and have been accomplished in what has been and continues to be a very challenging economic time. To all who supported the House as a volunteer, a staff member, a donor or a sponsor, I offer my heartfelt thanks. You truly have made a difference in the life of our community.

Over the course of the past several years, we have acquired a much richer and deeper understanding of what we are. As we look to the future, I would ask you to join with me in dreaming and discovering what we have the potential to be.

Getting On The Map: The Emergence of Calgary, Post Confederation February 10 - May 29 | Co-curated by Lougheed House curator Caroline Loewen and independent curator Mary Beth Laviolette. On Canada’s 150th anniversary, our exhibit used a combination of reproductions and originals of early maps, photographs and artwork about Southern Alberta to tell the fascinating story of the Calgary frontier as it was in the 1870s and 1880s, more than 30 years before Alberta joined Canada.

Cultivating the Landscape: A Social History of Gardening in CalgaryJune 22 - November 5 | This exhibit showed how, through urban beautification movements, the imperative to grow vegetables for the social good, or even using gardens as advertising, our community has shaped (and been shaped by) the land.

Artists in ResidenceMay, June, July | Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton, visual artists, facilitators, and community organizers explored their creative practice on the relationship between humans and animals, focusing specifically on the house, gardens, and surrounding neighbourhood. This initiative was made possible by the Community Fund for Canada’s 150th, a collaboration between Calgary Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast.

Humanity and Me: A Celebration of Disability Pride, Culture and Human RightsJune 2 | This collaboration between Disability Action Hall and Lougheed House featured a curated pop-up gallery of disability art and artifacts, short films, afternoon tea and discussion about Bill 205, the Disability Advocate bill.

EXHIBITHIGHLIGHTS

Message from Eric Moschopedis and Mia Rushton For several months during summer 2017 we had the great pleasure of working as artists-in-residence at the Lougheed House. We were tasked by Curator Caroline Loewen to research the historical and contemporary relationships between animals, people, and plant life in and around the House. We were struck by the oft used description that the Lougheed House was built on the bald prairies - as if the land was barren. We took this as a cue to research the grasses and wildflowers that would have played an important role in the ecology of the place before construction. The residency forced us to move beyond our typical urban explorations and to develop an understanding of the grasslands as it once was, while imagining how they can become an important part of the geography around the House again. The residency resulted in us being able to create some very important new works (a botanical intervention, photograph series, and new garden space) while exploring new material practices and creating long-term engagement. We are enamoured with the garden volunteers and the Head Gardener. Establishing relationships with these folks that will extend beyond the scope of the residency was truly an advancement of our practice.8 99

CORPORATEVOLUNTEER PROFILE

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

Yasmeen Huq (right) withJeana-Marie Brodie, BDO Canada LLP corporate volunteers

Yasmeen HuqMy name is Yasmeen Huq, I volunteer on the Board of Directors so on behalf of the Board, I would like to thank all Lougheed House volunteers for your dedication and contributions in helping Lougheed House succeed. I have another role for Lougheed House as well, and that is as a volunteer at events we have held. It’s a different way to volunteer and, dare I say, it’s more fun! I work at BDO Canada LLP and as a corporate volunteer some of us co-workers like to get together outside the office, meet new people and help out a good cause. We have several departments in our office over three floors with over 200 employees. Unless you are on our social committee not everyone knows everyone. So we like to use these volunteer endeavours not only as a way to give back to the community but also to bring our office together and meet our co-workers in a stimulating feel-good environment outside the workplace. That’s where special events at Lougheed House come in. Whether you volunteer with a group or come on your own and help out, the good thing about it is you are meeting people. Not to mention joining together with them towards a common mission of helping others have fun, learn and enjoy this wonderful resource, Lougheed House, that we have right here in the middle of Calgary. It just feels good. If you’re reading this and thinking you might like that feeling as well, Lougheed House may be just the volunteer opportunity for your organization.

Bill RennieBill Rennie is a lively presence at Lougheed House. As one of over 60 volunteers, he brings history alive by donning historic costumes and doing popular one-hour interpretive tours.

Bill’s ancestors immigrated to Canada from Scotland (father) and Ireland (mother) in the early 1800s. In Calgary since 1975, Bill and his wife raised four children and now enjoy their five grandkids.

Bill says that one of the highlights of his involvement with Lougheed House is his unique collaboration with another of our tour guides, Teddy Lane, a student at New Heights School.

“Teddy and I have developed our ‘Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure’ tour after a movie of the same name. Working with Teddy, has been a new experience for me. Teddy is a special young man.”

Bill & Ted’s Sunday tours are one of Calgary’s most sought-after heritage experiences.

“I have volunteered more than 200 hours during the past year and a surprising thing that I have learned is how prominent and important James and Isabella were to Calgary, Alberta and Canada, but also how unaware most Calgarians are of them. Now that I am retired I have the time to learn about this great city that I call home and it is a privilege to share what I have learned about the Lougheed House with our guests.”

“Had a superb tour conducted by Teddy & his sidekick Bill. If you like history... I highly recommend the tour.”

PROGRAMHIGHLIGHTSLougheed House ChristmasNovember 17 - January 7 | This year’s designs were beautifully realized by professional interior designers Selina Austin, Ana Cummings, Rebekah McEwan, Swantje Macke-Monteiro, Lea Romanowski, Alison Rose, Beatta Ryback and Chantel C Snyder, all of whom donated their time and incorporated their own personal family heirlooms into their work.

Beltline BonspielFebruary 25 | In collaboration with Beltline Neighbourhoods Association and Southern Alberta Curling Association, we staged Calgary’s first outdoor bonspiel in 100 years. Teams from the Inglewood, Sunalta & Beltline Community Associations – plus a team from CBC Calgary – competed for The Brewery Trophy, first awarded in 1915.

Beltline Garden Party at Lougheed HouseJuly 29 | Our first Community Dog Parade was a highlight of the event, with over 40 Beltline dogs strutting their stuff for prizes. For the humans, we had live music, bocce ball, storytelling, a sale of vintage tea cups & saucers, and local storyteller Karen Gummo performed a reminiscence as Lady Isabella Lougheed might have told it in the House in 1935.

“Wonderful bonspiel yesterday. Even though it was pretty frosty outside, the

Lougheed always puts on a great event!”– Janna Zahorodniuk, Facebook

Small Experiments (AlTOURnatives)May 2017 | We invited three Beltline residents and the grade 5 and 6 students from Connaught School to put their own personal lens on Lougheed House by creating one-time-only House tours that explored subjects that interested them. All four tours sold out and led to the House winning the “Engagement” Leadership Award from the Alberta Museums Association.

Thanks to our tour guides and neighbours - Camille Betts, Robert Lowther, David Munoz and the grade 5 and 6 students of Connaught School.

“Why Bison Belong in Banff & Southern Alberta” Presented by Dr. Leroy Little Bear & Harvey LockeMarch 16th | Continuing a Lougheed House tradition of providing local historical discussion and learning opportunities, Dr. Leroy Little Bear and Harvey Locke, authors of The Last of the Buffalo Return to the Wild, led us through the epic and moving story of the near extinction of millions of buffalo in the 19th century.

Together they presented the recent Buffalo Treaty among many First Nations and Tribes of the Great Plains of Canada and Montana and spoke of the Bison Belong movement that returned wild bison to Banff National Park in 2017.

OUR BOARD AND VOLUNTEERS

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

Susan Wight (left) with Trudy Cowan

Susan WightEach year, a Lougheed House Volunteer is awarded the Trudy Cowan Volunteer Appreciation Award. Named after Lougheed House Conservation Society’s founding Director, the Award honours the vital role volunteers continue to play in the ongoing success of Lougheed House. This year it was awarded to Garden Volunteer, Susan Wight who has been volunteering at Lougheed House for five years. Susan says, “(I) first attended a Doors Open YYC at Lougheed House and got chatting with Marie Gattinger, Head Gardener. I like to putter in gardens and she made it sound like fun. I distinctly remember her saying with a laugh, that every minute I volunteered was one less minute of work she would have to do! Even half an hour would help. Who could resist? So, I followed up and joined in the spring.” Now, Susan is an integral part of a loyal team of Lougheed House Gardeners, many of whom have been tending the Gardens since the very beginning of site restoration in the late 1990s.

“It’s a lot of fun, the people are great and it’s exciting to see the Gardens grow.

You feel a sense of pride.”- Susan Wight

We are grateful to our ten generous volunteer Board members who provide a blend of thoughtful stewardship of Lougheed House’s community reputation and future stability, plus on-the-ground helping hands at our events. Collectively, our Board members donate over 500 hours of their time, annually.

Beyond our Board, members of our dedicated and loyal volunteer corps gave Lougheed House thousands of hours of their time and expertise as gardeners, historic interpreters, interior designers, casino and special events volunteers. New volunteer highlights included working with new community and corporate groups including Grade 11 students from Sir Winston Churchill High School.

Thank you to everyone who dedicated their valuable time to Lougheed House and Gardens and enhanced the experience of our guests.

FUNDRAISERA Wedding for the AgesSeptember 16 | This immersive, one-time event featured a live recreation by Thou Art Here Theatre of the 1884 wedding of James Alexander Lougheed and Isabella Sophia Hardisty – held on the 133rd Anniversary of the actual occasion. The evening’s festivities included a theatre production, gourmet dinner and silent auction, and raised over $28,000 in support of Lougheed House; gardens, programs and exhibitions. The marriage on September 16, 1884 of James Lougheed and Isabella Hardisty was pivotal to a young lawyer newly arrived from Toronto and a young woman whose parents were “fur trade royalty” in the Hudson’s Bay Company. Together they would greatly influence the shape and tenor of this new, rough-hewn and fast-growing community of Calgary, itself incorporated as a “Town” the same year.

Thank you to all of the guests, sponsors and donors who contributed to the success of this special event and whose support of Lougheed House is enabling us to grow new and unique learning experiences for all who visit. A special thank you to Mary Lougheed for her unwavering support. Also, special thanks to Dr. Donald Smith, Professor Emeritus, University of Calgary, and Ms. Trudy Cowan, founding Executive Director of Lougheed House, for your significant contributions in bringing this evening’s history to life. Numerous guests also played a role in the evening’s performances and we thank you for your willingness to be a part of ‘making history’.

PRIVATE EVENT RENTALS ANDWEDDINGS

PROGRAMMINGSchool programs at the Lougheed House are continuing to build on their mission of providing immersive and inquiry based learning experiences to students within Calgary and the surrounding area. By providing programs that are hands-on, tactile and steeped in the rich history that the House provides, students have an opportunity to see themselves within the context of the various legacies left behind by those who founded and shaped our country. Moving forward, school programs will be endeavoring to add program offerings in an outreach capacity that are project based to further increase our impact and relevance to the schools and students in our local communities.

Programs for adults are an important part of our mandate to be a hub in the community. After all, why should kids enjoy all of the fun and discovery? Our adult programs, normally held during the evenings, never fail to delight participants with entertaining and thought-provoking themes, curated content and audience engagement.

We collaborated with 25 local artists and makers to exhibit, promote and sell their work.

We served 360 new Canadians through the Institute for Canadian Citizenship’s Cultural Access Pass program.

Whether looking for a venue for corporate or celebratory events, the Lougheed House is a perfect hidden gem for any special event looking for an elegant, one-stop shopping venue rental. We offer our corporate customers space for Monday or Tuesday meetings all through the day, or a venue full of ambiance for customer or employee evening events any night of the week.

As a National and Provincial Historic Site, guests of personal or individual celebrations can be immersed in an era of a time gone by, providing a calming and elegant venue for those intimate celebratory occasions.

The Lougheed House offers all special event clients access to parking, full set up and take down of tables and chairs, dedicated event hosts to ensure the event is worry free, and access to the full House and Gardens for any event. All catering can be arranged through The Restaurant on site which features a focus on elevated local cuisine and a dedication to working with you to get things just right.

THERESTAURANTat Lougheed HouseOur cuisine style is committed to simple quality ingredients. We utilize our onsite garden and local food growers. Menus are prepared to suit the vast tastes of today for our Lunch, Brunch and Afternoon Tea. Reservations are recommended.

The Restaurant at Lougheed House together with Lougheed House has completed over 400 events in these past few years. We are pleased to offer custom menus for social gatherings, weddings, and classic corporate events for 20 to 200 people. We take pride in our service and enjoy taking part with our Guests as they celebrate their families, their engagements and their special occasions.

Did you know almost all guests of the House stop in our gift store? It’s an integral and important part of our visitors’ experience of the museum.

An exciting year for the Gift Shop saw us begin consulting with local makers about improving our shop offerings while developing plans for physical upgrades to the shop. We hosted maker markets to let our new suppliers get to know our community better and held our first ever large scale sale that helped us raise much needed funds for the House.

Throughout the year we built relationships with artisans and small businesses who believe in our mission. We explored avenues to make the shop as sustainable as possible considering ecological and social, as well as financial, outcomes. Building on a sustainability theme, we received – and sold - 126 teacups from generous donors as we continue to do business bringing happiness through a connection to history. Visit us often in the upcoming year for more locally made, sustainability-minded beautiful goods.
