CBU Packaging: Past, Present, and Future
Siripong Malasri1
Abstract: CBU started its packaging program with a packaging elective in the spring of 2001. It grew into a
Packaging Certificate Program and later turned into a Packaging Minor for engineering majors and a Packaging
Concentration for engineering management majors at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Major pieces of lab equipment were acquired from the Assisi Foundation Grant during 2003-2005. More pieces
were donated from various companies, including FedEx, Plastic Ingenuity, and Smith & Nephew. The lab has been
an ISTA certified packaging lab since 2009. In 2010, CBU established the Healthcare Packaging Consortium with
seven founding member companies. It has grown to 16 active member companies as of 2016.
In 2013, CBU and Cloud Publications of India designated the International Journal of Advanced Packaging
Technology as the official journal of the consortium. Later in 2015, the partnership grew into another packaging
publication, PACKCON Scholarly Online Packaging Conference, which turned into the International Engineering
Science Technology Online Conference (IESTOC) in 2017. In 2013, a TAPPI Student Chapter was established.
Currently, the chapter operates the PACKCON Online Packaging Magazine.
With the generosity of Mr. Dick Gadomski, the construction of a new 23,000 square foot “Packaging & Engineering
Applied R&D Center” will begin in 2017 and be ready for use in 2018. A $2M capital campaign for new lab
equipment for the new building is part of CBU’s $70M capital campaign. Future plans include an ISTA certified
thermal transport lab and an M.S. in Packaging Engineering.

Adjustable Temperature Test Chamber & Performance Evaluation
of Bubble Wraps under Vibration
Siripong Malasri1
Abstract: Two projects will be included in this presentation:
Adjustable Temperature Test Chamber: A test chamber was built from insulated foam panels, which could be
configured to fit a drop tester and a vibration table. A space heater was placed in the chamber with a temperature
data logger to monitor the temperature. The temperature inside the chamber was more stable than the room
temperature. The test chamber provides a better controlled test environment than the regular lab condition.
Performance Evaluation of Bubble Wraps under Vibration: A triaxle accelerometer box was mounted inside a
plastic tote without bubble wrap underneath. The tote underwent ASTM 4169 and ISTA 3A vibration profiles. The
experiment was repeated with two types of bubble wraps inserted underneath the accelerometer box: (1) individual
bubble wraps and (2) continuous bubble wraps. PSD of the three cases were compared. No significant difference
was observed for the two types of bubble wraps.
