2017 has been a very important year for Arteche. A year in which we have closed important agreements for the group’s future and in which we have reorganized, focusing on our strengths and being more prepared to respond to our customers’ needs and the needs of a shifting sector.

Among the agreements closed this year, the one that stands out are the addition of new business partners that will be joining us in our project, the joint venture agreement in the turnkey projects business or the disinvestment in the medium voltage switchgear business.

But it has also been a very important year because, despite the uncertainties that continue to a ect the global economy, our work, service, and closeness has allowed us to maintain the confi dence of our customers and we have grown 9% in our main lines of business.

This trust has also manifested itself in acknowledgements of our quality and service, among which I would like to highlight, due to its importance, the award Iberdrola has given us for best supplier of the year.

With the soundness provided by a portfolio of clients who trust us, with a team of highly qualifi ed and committed professionals, and with the support of all those who are supporting us (shareholders, banks, institutions and suppliers), we face 2018 with the hope to continue growing, fulfi lling objectives, and contributing to generating value and developing the future.

A sustainable and attractive future, responsible both with society and environment.

“ The Project we all share, close

and committed to our clients, ambitious

and focused on excellence, looks to the future

with optimism. ”

_ Alexander Artetxe CEO of Arteche Group

_ We strive every day to continue being the preferential choice of the electric sector all over the world

_ Luis M. Pérez

Arteche Group General Manager

STRATEGY

“ We value our capacity of local service as a competitive advantage to be strengthened in the future by adding new remote motorization and predictive data analysis technologies. ”

How is it possible that an organization that has been in the business for more than 70 years continues to be the preferred choice for most customers in the electric sector? Because we make an effort to learn from our own errors and improve a little every day. The response is obvious, but it is not simple to implement. All great manufacturers of electric equipment occasionally have defects, what makes a di erence is the way in which they are faced.

In Arteche, we are proud to act proactively and communicate with our customers. We will then investigate the root cause of the defect and provide solutions.

If we add to this attitude the existence of a fi rst-rate technical engineering team, together with local service teams next to our main users in the fi ve continents, we will fi nd the reason of our success.

But we do not want to stay only here. We will begin to incorporate native motorization technologies to the equipment we are currently developing, which will allow us to remotely diagnose the state of our equipment. Identifying a possible defect before it occurs will help us to extend the useful life expectations and reduce the need of maintenance, improving the return of investment of our customers.

A current or voltage transformer, a relay, a recloser, a capacitor bank or a protection and control system are all the examples of equipment used in sector of the generation, transmission and distribution of energy with well-known functions, which may benefi t greatly from the addition of “servitization” features.

During the second half of the year, after the incorporation of Luis M. Pérez as the new General Manager in the Arteche Group, the organisation has been redesigned in order to progress in relation to competitiveness and service and to be able to have a bigger focus towards our customers.

The new organisation, led by a committee that combines experience with youth, wide knowledge of the di erent business lines in Arteche and great international experience, is characterised by its agility and fl exibility.

By doing so, we put aside the organisation divided into different business units, thus achieving a higher functionality and better decision-making, in order to e ciently solve the challenges our customers face.

Arteche North America is a new company arising from the corporate merger of Inelap, which belonged to Power Grid, and Transformadores y Tecnología, which belonged to Instrument Transformers. This merger under a common brand has consolidated the group’s structure on the continent.

This change allows the company to optimise its operations and administrative procedures. In this way, we are enhancing our position in the North American market, which is a key market in terms of its volume and prospects for growth in relation to all of the group’s businesses.

_ Inelap and TYT, the Arteche companies in Mexico, become Arteche North America

This has strengthened the Arteche Group’s position in North America

The Group has acquired the total amount of shares belonging to Arteche Nissin, which now becomes Arteche Gas Insulated Transformers. The new company, located in Vitoria, in the Basque Country, will keep the technological alliance with the initial partner, the Japanese company Nissin Electric.

Arteche Gas Insulated Transformers was born in 2010 as a joint venture and currently manufactures, under the ownership of the Arteche Group, the gas-insulated instrument transformers both for GIS substations and for AIS substations under strict environmental control parameters.

Within the facilities in Vitoria of 5,000 m2, it includes a white room where the primary and secondary winding of the equipment and the barrel and insulator mounting of all the transformers is performed. It also has a laboratory where it can test the transformers up to 245 kV.

Annual report | 2017

Our history developing equipment and solutions for the electrical sector has always been characterised by a strong innovative ambition. This is an essential characteristic in order to respond to the challenges faced by the sector, mainly due to the incorporation of new technologies in the electrical networks all over the world.

Because of this ambition, we are allowed to see the challenges we face as opportunities, and to turn those opportunities into solutions with a high added value for our customers in matters such as the substations digitalisation, the distribution automation or the status monitoring or the assets smart management.

The continuous evolution of our products, improving their reliability and managing their life cycle, taking care of the environment and giving priority to safety before any contingency that may occur are also challenges we face every day. We overcome them thanks to a team composed of highly qualified and committed people, a team we believe in and thanks to which we contribute to the reliable functioning of the electrical grids.

But we do not face our challenges alone: we do it by collaborating, sharing the knowledge of our researchers and the resources in this company with other participants (universities, research centres, customers, suppliers, etc.). Because we understand that it is the best way to ensure that the solutions are e cient and arrive on time in a global market which is more and more demanding.

We understand this innovative e ort as a path we have to follow step by path, by overcoming every milestone and discovering the new challenges. Because we believe that innovating means not settling. Innovating also means identifying and introducing improvements in our management, by adapting our organisation to the new needs of everyone being part of this community. Moving together.

_ We face the challenges with ambition, collaborating to obtain solutions with a high added value

_ Roberto Ortiz de Zárate

Innovation Director

“ Innovation does not only limit itself to our products and solutions. We also innovate in the model of the company that has to enable it ”

_ 300 kV Digital substation with STATTNET

The solution includes digital measurement with our optical current transformer and electrical equipment to distribute the measurement values through an optical fi bre communications network, technically known as process bus

Red Eléctrica and Engie have implemented the Mejillones-Cardones line of 500 kV and 600 km long that connect, for the fi rst time the Great North Interconnected System (SING, Sistema Interconectado del Norte Grande) and the Central Interconnected System (SIC, Sistema Interconectado Central) in Chile. This is a milestone for the country in its objective to comply with the commitment established in the Energy Agency: to have a sole National Electrical System.

This new electrical axis, which will change the reality of the electrical system in Chile, has 550 kV and 100 kVA Arteche Power Voltage Transformers, which do not need maintenance due to their long useful life.

This project meets the main challenge of the Chilean electrical system: to ensure the supply safety and reduce the energy price, allowing for the evacuation of all the renewable generation in the northern area of the country.

_ The power voltage transformers operate in the line with which Chile is trying to create a unique electrical system

This is equipment with a power of 550 kV and 100 kVA

Transport systems operators and electrical companies are increasingly more aware of the technical, operational and safety advantages that represent applying new digital technologies of instrumentation, control and regulation. Among those advantages we find the reduction in copper wiring, a lower installation cost, the reduction in engineering times or more safety for the personnel.

This is the case of STATNETT, the Norwegian public operator of the electrical grid. It has implemented an experience to test the last advances in the digital substation scope, in a substation of 300 kV, and we have been selected for this purpose. Specifically, it is assessing the performance of the redundant digital process bus, with conventional and optical technologies in a multi-vendor distributed control system that uses the latest technologies available for said purpose.

Arteche has provided optical current transformers, Merging units (MU: Optoelectronics equipment in charge of converting and distributing the primary values registered by the optical current transformer in sampled values sent through an Ethernet network) and Stand Alone Merging Units (SAMU: Electronic equipment that distributes the primary values registered by the conventional measurement transformers in sampled values and sent through an Ethernet network).

Regarding the instrumentation, an optical measurement and a conventional measurement on 2 lines have been used, in a redundant configuration. All the measurements are digitalised by the MUs and SAMUs that distribute the measurement towards the protection and control equipment by using PTP2 (IEEE 1588-2008: standard for a high-precision time synchronisation, with a nanosecond resolution) and PRP to ensure redundancy.

The protection or control equipment belonging to third parties, execute the distance protection and transformer control functions on 2 substation lines, by using the measurements provided by our MU and SAMUs. The solution is integrated in the substation control system, by using VLAN (VirtualLAN) to segment the packages that circulate through the network (SV, GOOSE, reports) and ensure a high level of performance and response to critical situations.

The STAR project of Iberdrola, which is in its fi nal stage, has provided some very successful results in relation to the reduction of the supply interruption times, the reduction in penalisations and the reduction in the operational cost.

The company has believed in Arteche, whose more than 50,000 devices are part of the innovative smart electrical grid implemented through this project, operating in more than 90,000 transformation centres.

Thanks to the experience accumulated, Arteche has developed a complete set of solutions that allow for satisfying the need for a more demanding smart network.

_ The experience with the STAR project allows Arteche to develop a complete set of solutions for monitoring and automating the distribution networks

This is one of the most ambitious smart grid project ever made, with a participation in more than 90,000 transformation centres, considered a global reference

_ New ultra-fast instantaneous auxiliary relay for ultra-fast tripping applications

The plug-in 4-contact RF-4UR completes the Arteche relay range for the energy sector

Arteche has presented, during the European Utility Week 2017, one of the most relevant events in Europe for the smart electrical networks sector, its new RTU, the adaTECH CMD.

The adaTECH CMD by Arteche is a multifunction and ultra-compact device which allows automating and monitoring all types of secondary substations, integrating with di erent types of control centers using the latest cybersecurity technologies.

This new equipment is designed to control, monitor and supervise any type of medium voltage break element and transformation centres, secondary distribution substations or load break switches; it has been designed by following the most frequently used telecontrol international protocols IEC 61870-5-104 or DNP3, and the most demanding cybersecurity characteristics, such as IEEE1686, IEC62351-5.

Its fl exibility, maintenance simplicity and compact size, in addition to its complete range of advanced functions, turn it into the ideal IED for the different automation applications of the distribution.

This device, combined with the full range of voltage and current sensors developed during the last 10 years, show a complete set of solutions for monitoring and automating the distribution grids, allowing for the satisfaction of the most demanding smart network needs.

_ New RTU, the adaTECH CMD, a multifunction and ultracompact unit for the MT networks automation

Arteche has installed more than 40,000 medium voltage sensors and PLC/BPL couplers, and it has automatised more than 7,000 nodesArteche introduces the new RF-4UR instantaneous

auxiliary relay for ultrafast tripping applications, with 4 changeover contacts and plug-in format. This new relay completes the tripping product range designed for the energy sector.

Together with the auxiliary power devices, it is tailored to the needs and philosophies of the client where it is necessary to make the tripping separately from opening the contacts of the coils of the cut-out elements.

With actuation times in tripping of less than 3 ms., this device allows operating in highly demanding, critical facilities where response times and high reliability are essential key factors.

Thanks to the design of this device, without the need for complex electronic circuits that a ect its reliability, in normal operating temperatures, we can guarantee

the non-occurrence of trippings with lower voltages than those of excitation, avoiding unwanted untimely actions.

This new auxiliary relay far exceeds the strictest regulatory and functional standards, similar to those required for protection equipment in Substations, providing the performance and reliability that characterizes Arteche auxiliary relays.

This relay in plug-in format is fully compatible with the current bases and accessories, standard for the entire range of 4-contact devices that Arteche o ers.

With this new model, we o er the Market the possibility of selecting the most adequate reference for each application in the ultrafast relay line, combining single tripping applications in DIN format with the RXR-4 model, and/or highly inductive tripping and load operating applications with the RJ-4XR4 and CJ-4XR4 models respectively.

RTE, the French electrical operator, has successfully installed the fi rst CFD (Cable Fault Detector) systems based on the fully passive Arteche optical current transformers in the commune of Gavet, near the city of Grenoble. Only Arteche has been able to validate a technical solution and start it up in the French network, having competed in the tender with large multinational companies.

In high voltage overhead lines, the automatic reclosing function is widely used, since it allows for re-establishing the service automatically before temporary failures. This does not happen in underground lines since, not being exposed to environmental phenomena, the failures are generally permanent. When there are mixed lines, with overhead and underground sections, this closing implies an important risk since, if the failure is permanent, the high voltage cable can be damaged.

The solution by Arteche for detecting the cable fault in high voltage mixed lines, based on the optical measurement technology, was authorised by REE in 2014 and now is also applied by RTE, the French electrical operator.

After the first experience, RTE has standardised the Arteche solution for all its mixed lines and already has 13 CFD systems operating.

This technology has important advantages. The fault detection is based on a differential algorithm and, therefore, it is 100% reliable. By using the optical fi bre, the values measured in the substation are processed to detect which segment is failing and, if it is located in the underground section, the system blocks the protections reclosing function, thus avoiding any damage. They do not require any type of maintenance or civil work for their installation either.

Thanks to the close collaboration with the RTE technical team we have gained relevant application knowledge, which has let us standardise the solution and the equipment related to the di erent specifi c cases shown in the RTE network. In addition, new business opportunities related to this niche are being developed, such us the case of the French Omexon Engineering, with which new international projects are being planned.

_ Arteche develops a new tool to reduce the expenses in the Mexican user’s electricity bill

The free tool allows for the calculation of the power factor in low voltage installations, as well as the estimated saving when installing a capacitors bank, by only using the information in the electricity bill

needs. Without any technical knowledge and in less than 5 minutes, only with the bill information.

It is a tool developed for the Mexican user, which does not require technical terms nor complex formulas.

It is a free tool available for the general public. Once the calculation results have been submitted, it is possible to contact our professional team specialised in power quality to solve your doubts or request the support required to improve the energy quality in its installation.

The objective is helping the Mexican industry in reducing its expenses in the electricity bill and improving the e ciency in its electrical installations. When there are problems related to the power quality –alterations in the voltage and/or current ideal values–, it is possible to correct them by installing capacitors banks and harmonic fi lters. However, identifying the specifi c needs in each installation requires knowledge about electrical engineering and the application of complex formulas.

The power factor calculator of Arteche simplifi es this task so that any professional may know its installation

_ Arteche automatises the substation in Malpica for Elecnor in Spain

The company has congratulated Arteche on the work carried out during the preoperational tests

_ CFE starts up the Escobedo substation in Mexico, one of the largest ones in North America, by using saTECH telecontrol equipment

The substation has more than 120 IEDs distributed in 32 positions that are divided in three parks of 115kV, 230kV and 400kV and it represents a milestone in the Automation of IEC 61850 Substations due to its size and the complexity of the technologies used

The commissioning of the Escobedo Substation has let the Arteche Group incorporate the control, measurement and test block equipment in one of the largest and with the biggest responsibility substations in North America.

The substation has more than 120 IEDs distributed in 32 positions that are divided in three parks of 115kV, 230kV and 400kV respectively.

This project, located in the metropolitan area of Monterrey in Mexico, represents an important reference regarding the Substations Automation and Control under the regulation IEC 61850 due to its size and the complexity of the technologies used. The control equipment in the saTECH family shows its capacity by complying with the requirements in the CFE specifi cation.

Arteche has performed the Automation System in the Malpica Substation, operated by Elecnor in Galicia, within the Wind Farm Repowering Project scope. The project, developed by Arteche in a much-reduced period, has caused the congratulation of Elecnor.

This substation provides services to a wind farm in which 69 wind turbines have been replaced by seven that are more powerful and that keep the same power (16.45 MW). The substation had an obsolete system that has been modernised by the SAS IEC 61850 of Arteche, integrated by control equipment belonging to the saTECH family and protection relays from Siemens. The infrastructure is composed of a power transformer line and four suppliers to evacuate the energy in the wind turbines.

Arteche has integrated the primary equipment signals in Protection, Control and Measurement boards, validating the correct arrival of blades and switches positions in the line bay, of the transformer and the cabinet in cells, the correct operation of the trips and locks, and the correct arrival of all the signals chronologically.

The system interconnection has also been verifi ed, by doing tests on the alarms in the bay controllers (saTECH BCU), and by performing switches opening and closing controls and validating the database generated during the tests.

After the approval of all the tests, the Elecnor team has been created, which will operate on the substation regarding the use of the SAS IEC 61850 system of Arteche.

The customer has been thankful for the e ort and work done by the Arteche team in Madrid, which has been supported by ACP México for the Protection relays when carrying out this ambitious project in a much-reduced period.

SUSTAINABILITY, SAFETY AND HUMAN RIGHTS

_ Arteche Mexico helps after the earthquake on September 19 by donating material for the rescuers

The volunteers from Arteche started to give the donations on the very next day after the earthquake

On September 19, 1985, there was an earthquake in Mexico in which 12,843 people lost their lives, and that a ected thousands of Mexican families.

This year, as the years before, Arteche has added the practice of a drill in its di erent Mexican o ces that, due to the anniversary of the terrible earthquake 32 years ago, is organised by the Civil Protection Secretariat.

Only after a couple of hours of having done the exercise, the alarms sounded again.

The brigades activated their demanding response protocol and thorough inspections were carried out in the o ces before giving permission to return to the normal activities.

In the meanwhile, the news started to arrive. Weeks later, more than 360 deceased were recorded and there were several buildings that had collapsed.

The directors, in addition to invite civil protection so that it validated that the company facilities were safe for the workers, helped our people in the communities a ected by donating aseptic dressing materials, gloves so that the rescuers continued their work, food, clothes, tools and personal hygiene items.

The call was made on the very September 19 at night and people answered as expected; on September 20, a group of 13 volunteers left with 2 vans to help.

On that day, despite the sadness, we saw a lot of people like us helping, people on foot, people delivering supplies by bike, young students going to the collapsed building to o er their help, willing to risk their lives to help the neediest.

For the fifth consecutive year, we have reached the highest rating that Siemens grants to its suppliers in the ever demanding annual assessment, the ’Preferred Supplier’ one, for the selected suppliers.

In the report where the German multinational company assesses Arteche, meeting the deadlines is pointed out –which is deemed excellent-, and so are logistics and technology. Because of this, after the thorough audit, they congratulate everyone who is part of the relays area and encourage them to continue working like that to keep on improving.

One of the points that Siemens thinks can be improved is the stock level. However, despite this, the total operational assessment of the relays area as Siemens provider reaches 93 points on 100.

By adding the f inancial r isk assessment to the 2016 fi scal year, the total assessment of Arteche as relays supplier is of 88 points.

These results endorse the concept of closeness with our customers as one of the strengths where the Arteche Group’s success is supported.
