David L. Weck

2017 Fall & ChristmasIt is my pleasure to present this collection of dynamic handbell music for your 2017 Fall & Christmas season.

I trust that you will find many useful selections to enrich and enliven your worship and concerts, and most importantly to captivate your ringer musicians as they dig deeper into the art of handbell ringing. Our entire handbell catalog is available at our website, www.hopepublishing.com, where you can view the music and listen to full-length recordings. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please let us know, as we strive to serve the needs of today’s handbell choir.

David L. Weck, Handbell Editor [email protected]

This Christmas classic be-gins with the effect of tower bells ringing throughout the countryside, then gracefully transitions into the famil-iar, quintessential tune for a handbell setting. The charm of this dynamic arrangement is matched with its carefully crafted level of difficulty making this accessible to many bell choirs.

Performance NotesThis unique arrangement, written to be performed by a 3, 4, or 5 octave ensemble, has two performance options:1. All ringers remain in one place for the entire duration of the work.2. For an added antiphonal effect, Group I (C 3 up to A5) should remain at its table inthe front of the performance space, while Group II (B5 up to A7) begins in the back ofthe back of the performance space. At measure 31, Group II slowly processes down the

Bringing together a number of familiar carols this Christ-mas medley combines piano with 3-5 octave handbells in a powerful back-and-forth dialogue between the two in-struments. This is the second setting from Joel for piano and bells following his best-selling “Thine Is the Glory,” code no. 2713.

This delightful presentation of this well-loved Christmas song is a dynamic fully devel-oped setting that is perfect for Christmas concerts in schools, communities, and churches. The optional parts for synth and percussion add nuance and festive charm…pa-rum pum pum pum!

Track 7-8

Duration: 3:21

Inspired by the text, “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it,” the opening segment in this set-ting creates a quieter, more contemplative mood. The mo-mentum eventually builds for the following rousing verse, followed by another more thoughtful verse on chimes. Always anchored by the well-known hymn tune and surrounded by more con-temporary harmonies, the listener is filled with a sense of wandering by the end — reminding one of the daily reflection to “Bind my wan-dering heart to Thee.”

Track 9-10

Duration: 3:40

Using mallets to create an energetic mood, this setting is designed to reflect the cel-ebratory atmosphere of the Thanksgiving season. While mallets are the dominating technique, care should be exercised so as not to create a “heavy” feeling but rather an upbeat, cheerful charac-ter expressing joyful thanks to God.

2805 3-5 oct. + G2 ........................................ $4.95

Track 5-6

Duration: 2:38

Written for adult choir with op-tional children’s choir or solo-ist, this pairing of an original composition with a Christmas classic affords a unique way to present “Away in a Man-ger” during the holiday sea-son. The simple part for the children’s voices fits perfectly with the gentle, original lul-laby. This setting originally appeared in Joel’s popular Christmas musical, Cele-brate the Season, code no. 8230. New for this year, we

offer a Two-Part Mixed voicing and a new 3-5 oct. handbell with optional 3-5 octave handchimes accompaniment compatible with all the vocal settings.

This Monkees’ hit from 1966 surged back into the collec-tive pop consciousness when it was covered by Smash Mouth for the soundtrack to Shrek. The driving rhythms and that ever-popular, catchy tune will surely be uplifting for both ringers and audiences of all ages. Fun, malleted sections and chimes adding background “fill,” create a trip back in time where you’ll find it hard not to sing along.

Reflecting the mystery, antici-pation, and excitement of the journey we will all one day take, this setting incorpo-rates a myriad of techniques, as well as, a few tempo changes. This is a great teaching piece sure to bond your ensemble together as a group while learning and executing the techniques.

This holiday classic was made famous by Burl Ives as the title track from his 1965 Christmas album. The charm and nu-ances that make this favorite tug at the heartstrings and call up fond memories from Christ-mases past are perfectly captured in this enchanting setting. The addition of hand-chimes, synth strings and percussion further enhances the feeling of this magical time of the year.

This Advent medley begins with LV and the hymn “Sav-ior of the Nations, Come,” then moves into a gently syncopated accompani-ment supporting “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.” Then with subtle touch, the chant DIVINUM MYSTERIUM, sneaks into the mix via handchimes. The overlap-ping and interweaving of the tunes in minor mode creates an ethereal effect fitting for the season of an-ticipation.

The hit song from “Fiddler on the Roof” is set here in a minor mode, at a slow lilting waltz tempo. It should be played with careful observance of the dynamics with sensitivity to the ‘weeping motif’ in mea-sures 19-20 and ebb and flow in measures 39-40, careful to bring out the emotion of the piece expressing a sense of nostalgic longing and the poignant observance of the passage of time.

Fred Pratt Green’s text, “For the Fruit of All Creation,” begins with traditional Thanksgiving themes but then goes beyond that, gradu-ally incorporating themes of stew-ardship, interdependence, and ecological responsibility. Russel Schulz-Widmar has set these words to the traditional Welsh melody AR HYD Y NOS, ar-ranged for SAB choir and six handbells. The music begins simply and builds gently as the text unfolds.

In this jubilant setting of HYMN TO JOY, Cynthia Do-brinski incorporates a nice variety of handbell tech-niques to make the tune come to life. With straight ringing along with mallets, martellato, and effective shakes, the ringers and listeners alike are given a satisfying musical expe-rience. The words from Psalm 100 serve as the inspiration: “Worship the Lord with gladness; come

before him with joyful songs.” At the 3- level, this is a setting that many church choirs can successfully accomplish.

HANDBELL FOLDER/BINDER(111/2"X10 1/2")With their unique design, these folders are made to independently hold music with or without a music stand. For tabletop operation, the bottom half of the binder swings back when open while the rings stay straight for easy reading. Used primarily for handbells, these binders are ideal for any sheet music where a stand may not be available. Featuring a 1 1/2” three-ring binder, they measure 11 1/2" x 10 1/2" (from inner ring to side edge) and are ideal for music measur-ing 8 1/2" X 11".
