SOFTBALL RULES
Team Composition
Teams are co-ed and may have up to 20 players on a roster with a maximum of 10 players on the field at a time.
Minimum of 9 players are needed to start and finish a game.
There must be four females on the field at all times.
Game Format
Each game will be played to 7 innings.
A coin flip will determine who will be the home team for each game.
There will be a one-hour time limit per game. No new inning may begin after 60 minutes from the start time as deter-
mined by the umpire. There will be a hard stoppage time of one hour and 30 minutes. The game result shall then
resort back to the last completed full inning.
If the game is tied after 7 innings of play and there is still time left to play, any extra innings will be played using
“California Rules”. This means that the last batted out from the previous innings shall begin on second base with one
out already recovered. The batter shall still begin with a one and one count and play will commence from there.
Tournament will be double elimination.
There is no time limit for the Championship game.
Playing Rules
There will be a 3 home-run limit per team, per game. After a team has hit its allowable over the fence home runs in one
game, each subsequent home run hit over the fence shall result in the batter being called out. The runners return to
the base they began from. If this results in the third out of the inning, the inning is over.
All players begin each at bat with a one and one count.
Players will be given one courtesy foul with two strikes. The next foul ball will result in the batter being called out.
Stealing bases is not allowed.
Players are allowed to slide into a base but are not required to slide when approaching a base. Players may not crash into
a fielder that is waiting with the ball. If this happens, the player will be called out. The runner should make every
attempt to avoid contact.
All pitches must be delivered with a perceptible arc and reach a height of at least 6 feet from the ground, while not ex-
ceeding a maximum height of 12 feet from the ground. Pitches are not called illegal until the ball has crossed the
plate. A quick pitch shall be called as an unfairly delivered pitch and shall be called a ball.
All other rules shall follow official USSSA Co-ed Softball Rules unless noted in this rules guide.
SOFTBALL RULES Continued
Batting Rules
Male and female batters do not have to alternate in the batting lineup, and there will be no two-base awards for walking
a male batter.
3-2 RULE - Two strikes will be an out and three balls will be a walk.
FOUL BALL RULE - Under the 3-2 rule, the 2nd foul ball after the first strike will be an out.
Slaughter Rule
If at the end of four complete innings one team is ahead by 15 or more runs, the game is over and a winner is declared. If
at the end of five innings one team is ahead by 10 or more runs, the game is over and a winner is declared.
Substitutions:
A game may begin with 9 players, but if another player arrives, that player must be inserted at the end of the line-up.
Whenever a team is playing with nine players, an automotive out will be taken when the vacant position in the
batting order appears.
A team may not walk a batter to get to the automatic out if it is the third out of the inning. If the last batter in the order is
walked, the automatic out is nullified and the next batter comes to bat.
A courtesy runner may be used once per half inning per gender. The courtesy runner may be any rostered player of the
same gender. If the designated courtesy runner should come to bat while they occupy the runner position, an out
shall result. Additional courtesy runners may be allowed with approval from the opposing team representative.
In case of an injury that requires a player to leave the game, teams are still allowed to play as long as they still have the
necessary amount of player to field a full team (9). If the injury leaves an odd number of batters in the lineup, an out
will be declared in the open position. A player removed for injury is not allowed to return in that game.
Positions
Positions consist of the pitcher, catcher, 1st, 2nd, 3rd basemen, short stop, and FOUR outfielders.
Equipment:
Game balls will be supplied. Men shall hit a USSSA official 12 inch softball. Women shall hit an 11 inch official USSSA soft-
ball.
Gym shoes or molded rubber baseball cleats are allowed.
Metal spikes are NOT allowed.
All bats must be USSSA approved slow pitch softball bats. No modified bats are allowed.
