We have been pretty fortunate thus far to enjoy some mild weather. We all know that the cold is on its way, though! As the cold weather creeps in please remember to help your children dress appropriately for outdoor recess time. Except in the most extreme temperatures, the students have two outside times; one 20 minutes long and the other 25 minutes in duration. Thank you for helping to keep them comfortable. Please re- member to label all winter items with your childs name as well. We have many items that look very similar. As we head into the last month of 2017, the staff continues to focus on learning and teaching. We have been working hard with students to improve their overall understanding in mathe- matics this year, to improve their written communication skills, and to take a growth mindset approach to learning. The month of December is shap- ing up to be busy. Our annual Santas Workshop is going to be held on Tuesday, December 12th and Wednesday, December 13th. We thank MCPIC and all of the volunteers for making this activity possible again this year for our students and for support- ing families in need in the Am- herstburg community. We will also be having a Spirit Assem- bly on Friday, December 22nd at 11:30 am where Winit Seals will be handed out, the choir and select classes will entertain us, and students and staff will enjoy an old fashioned carol sing along. As always, family mem- bers are welcome to attend! I always enjoy hearing from you with comments, concerns or news to share. Wear some-thing Festive

Spirit Week at Malden December 18th—December 22nd

Holiday Environmental Tips If you are going to purchase wrapping paper, avoid those with metallic colors, as they cannot be recycled. Look for wrapping

paper made from recycled materials and make sure to recycle it.

When using ribbon to decorate your gifts, purchase sturdy cloth ribbon that can be reused year after year, as most ribbon cannot be recycled.

Purchase and reuse holiday gift wrap, boxes or tins.

Save used wrapping to reuse next holiday season. If you have a lot of small pieces, make a paper “quilt” to wrap oversized gifts.

Create your own holiday gift bags with pieces of festive fabric. Your family and friends will appreciate the beautiful bag and will be able to reuse the bag to wrap their own gift next year.

Wrap gifts in useful items, such as kitchen utensils in an oven mitt or kitchen towel.

Put gifts in hatboxes tied with ribbon. Or hang jewelry like bracelets, necklaces or earrings right on the tree.

Get creative with your wrapping – reuse newspapers, comics, sports pages or old maps for a personalized look.

Let children create their own wrapping paper by decorating reused brown paper grocery bags or shopping bags with draw-ings, stickers or even stamps. The recipients will love the creative touch.

Use real popcorn, shredded paper or newspaper instead of conventional packing peanuts.

Make gift tags from last year’s holiday cards or simply write your greetings on the box to help reduce waste.

Apple Seeds by the Healthy Schools Division December Tips

To avoid receiving a suspension notice, make sure that your child’s immunizations are up to date with the health

unit. Health care providers do NOT report the shots that children receive to the health unit. They will only up-

date your child’s yellow card for your personal records. Parents, it’s your duty to report! Call the Windsor-Essex

County Health Unit every time your child gets a shot. To find out more information on what immunizations

your child needs, or to report a shot, call 519-258-2146 Ext. 1222 or go to https://www.wechu.org/pregnancy-

and-parenting/immunization-your-children

Stuck indoors due to bad weather? Get creative with your children and make animals or bugs out of veggies and fruits, then encour-age them to eat their masterpieces. Here are some examples to get you started:

Make ants on a log by cutting celery into 5 cm (2 inch) pieces. Fill the centre with cream cheese or peanut butter, and put either rai-

sins for black ants, or dried cranberries for red ants. Make snails using the celery pieces and filling the centre with hummus for veg-

etable snails or peanut butter for fruit snails. Offer your children a variety of vegetable or fruits to make their snail. For a fruit snail,

use green grapes for the body and a red grape for the head. For a vegetable snail, use chick peas for the body and a mini tomato for

the head. Make a sheep with cauliflower for the body, pretzel sticks for the legs, and a black olive for the head. Make a snake by

alternating sliced mini cucumbers with small mini tomatoes on a skewer. Put a larger mini tomato on the skewer as a head.Look on

the internet for more ideas and get creative in the kitchen!

Keep your activity levels up in the winter by trying some new outdoor activities. Have you ever tried skating, tobogganing, skiing,

or road hockey? Now’s the time! Just be sure to dress warmly and use the proper equipment for the activity, including the right

helmet, so you stay safe. Don’t let the cold weather stop you from being active – get outside and find ways to stay warm!

Sleep is a very important factor in health. It can change how well children are able to focus in school, their activity and energy lev-

els, and even their overall health. Did you know that lacking sleep can lead to a higher risk of getting sick? When you’re tired,

your immune system is less able to fight illness. Children between the ages of 5 – 13 years should get between 9 – 11 hours of

sleep, while children aged 14 – 17 years need 8 – 10 hours. Remember, every child is different and will need a different amount

of sleep to feel their best.

Hot Lunch Reminders—Inclement Weather Please note that if the buses are not running on a Friday morning due to inclement weather, there will be no hot lunch served on that day (pizza, pasta, hot dog, Pita Pit or Subway). Should you choose to send your child to school when the buses are not running, please ensure that they have a lunch packed for their nutritional breaks. The hot lunch that is missed will be made up at a later date, in which you will be notified. Thank you for support-ing the Malden hot lunch program.

Smoke-Free Ontario Although it might seem strange to think of tobacco use as being related to school, it has been shown that youth are influenced by their peers, when it comes to using tobacco products. According to the Canadian Tobacco Use Moni-toring Survey (CTUMS), 85% of smokers started before the age of 18. This fall The Smoke-Free Ontario Act School Blitz will be rolled out to schools across southwestern Ontario as a

means to educate young people about the law related to smoking on school property. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act was implement-ed on May 31st, 2006 to protect the health of all Ontarians, especially young people. The Smoke-Free Ontario Act prohibits smok-ing on school property, the sale or supply of tobacco products to a minor, and smoking in a vehicle with a passenger less than 16 years old. These laws apply to all staff, students and visitors on school property regardless of age, time of day, or time of year. The tobacco industry spends an outrageous amount of money marketing their products and young people tend to engage in risk-taking behaviours. Unfortunately, experimenting with tobacco or other substances is often a part of adolescence. As a parent, if you find your child using tobacco, the best thing you can do is to support your child through a quit attempt and help them under-stand that nicotine is addictive. For more information about quitting tobacco contact the Windsor Essex County Health Unit at 519-258-2146 ext. 3100 or visit smokershelpline.ca

Absences, Lateness, Sickness Reminder Punctual and regular attendance is expected but if your child is ill, s/he is better off at home under your care. If a student is going to be absent or late, parents must report the child’s absence in advance by call-ing the school; send a note with the child before the day of absence when it is known ahead of time, use EDSBY to create a planned absence for your child, send a note with siblings and making sure the home-room teacher or the office is aware of this information. Please leave a message on the 24 hour answer-ing machine stating the child’s name, grade and teacher and that s/he will be late or absent that day as well as the reason. Parents should call the school before the start of the school day. Thank you!

School resumes Monday, January 8th.
