You are about to make the first and the most important of these decisions as the direction of your future life stems largely from where you studied and what you studied. This prospectus is intended to help you understand why our college is a leader in the field of engineering education and to guide you in terms of which engineering programme to choose. You will find lots of information about each of our three engineering departments, about the programmes they offer, and about the supporting elements of life at Caledonian. Working Hand-in-Hand with International Institutions The college has affiliations with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in Scotland, in the UK, and most of our programmes are awarded by this internationally acclaimed university. We are

equally proud of our academic collaboration with VIT University in Vellore in India. This partnership has enabled us to offer strong undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in chemical engineering.

We have formed many other partnerships in prestigious institutions around the world. This enables us to offer our students opportunities to work and study abroad in internships and student exchange programmes.

Caledonian College of Engineering (CCE) opened in 1996 and has over the years become the largest provider of engineering education in Oman. Today, CCE is also widely regarded as one of the most prestigious private academic institutions in the country with a student population of over 3,000 and over 310 academic, support and administrative staff.

Guaranteeing QualityGraduates of the college enjoy a high record of employability due to quality programmes that fully conform to the Oman Qualifications Framework. All CCE programmes meet international standards as prescribed by agencies such as the Quality Assurance Agency, UK and the All India Council for Technical Education. All programmes of study are periodically reviewed by independent audit and a full quality management system is in place to ensure that high standards are maintained. Features of this system include external assessors, Board of Trustees Academic Council, Assessment Boards and international benchmarking.

Our Approach to Learning & TeachingCCE is categorised as a ‘university college’, as distinct from a ‘college’, in recognition of the depth of study offered in this specialised institution. Over the years the Caledonian has become a hallmark of quality learning and teaching in the Sultanate, taking an innovative approach to programme design and to the delivery of programmes. Two Campuses – One Caledonian FamilyCCE spans two campuses: the main campus is at Al-Hail where engineering teaching takes place. The Airport Heights campus houses our School of Foundation Studies. The approach of linking college-based researchers with industrial partners to undertake innovative, industry-driven research has attracted considerable funding and contributed to the future

growth of the college. Advisory groups, such as the Industry Advisory Group and Industry Interaction Group help maintain CCE’s engagement with industry.

ProgrammeThe School of Foundation Studies comprises 50 committed and expert staff members who deliver a strong foundation programme to over 800 students. The programme comprises three separate modules, covering English language, mathematics and IT skills. Also included in the programme are elements of physics and chemistry, important in your future engineering studies. Throughout the programme, you will learn important study skills such as note-taking, use of the

library, report writing, academic referencing, and keeping to deadlines. The programme fully conforms to national standards for foundation studies, as approved by the Oman Academic Accreditation Authority (OAAA).

Foundation Approach to Learning & TeachingWe firmly believe that people remember better when they find things out for themselves. We also believe that people learn better through practical application,

rather than just learning rules or theories. Success in the modern world depends on the ability to solve problems creatively, working in teams to meet deadlines. Your preparation for those challenges begins in Foundation.

Structure of the ProgrammeThe Foundation Programme is an 18-month programme comprised of three courses, Pre-Foundation (necessary only for those with limited English skills), Foundation 1 and the more-challenging Foundation 2. Each course takes

If you choose to study engineering at Caledonian, you will most likely begin your experience of college life at our Airport Heights Campus, dedicated to the School of Foundation Studies. Here you will receive a warm welcome from our team of foundation experts who provide every support to help you prepare for your future studies.

a minimum of one semester to complete. The rate of progress you make through Foundation is determined by two factors: firstly, the amount of effort you put into your studies, and secondly, the level of language competence you have when you join the college. It is normally expected that you can progress from the equivalent of IELTS Band 2.5 to Band 5 in two semesters. If you arrive with a lower language level, it will take you a minimum of three semesters.

The Pre-Foundation course comprises a single module in basic English language skills.

Foundation 1 and 2 each comprise three modules: Language & Learning (English and study skills), Technobasics (maths and science) and IT Skills. At the beginning of the Foundation Programme, you will take a placement test so that we can ensure that you are put into the right class that meets your language needs. While all students will study a common core of subjects, there is an opportunity each week to work on the areas of language that you feel you need most help with. This is facilitated through a fully supervised ‘diagnostic clinic’, where you will receive advice on accessing

learning resources appropriate to your needs.

Depending on the results of the Caledonian Entrance Assessment (CEA), students may be exempted from some of the modules of the Foundation Programme allowing for some students to complete their foundation studies in a single semester.

AwardAll students who successfully complete the Foundation Programme will receive a certificate and are automatically eligible to progress to Level 1 (first year) of their chosen engineering programme at Caledonian College of Engineering.

Continuing SupportThe School of Foundation Studies also provides support in Levels 1 and 2 of engineering studies as well as offering professional development through short courses. Staff development is offered through a certified CELTA and DELTA course.

We offer a number of undergraduate programmes in the broad areas of civil, mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer and chemical engineering. Each of these programmes is described in the pages ahead. Most of our undergraduate programmes are four-year Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) programmes but we also run two Bachelor of Science (BSc Hons and BSc) programmes. All programmes include mandatory, credit-bearing educational and professional development modules, mathematic and statistic modules, and English support classes.

Length of Study It takes a minimum of four years of full-time study to complete a degree in engineering and most students require an additional one year of foundation studies before beginning their programme. With the exception of the BEng in Chemical Engineering, a diploma may be attained after a minimum of two years full-time study. Mode of StudyIf you are a school leaver, you will normally study with us fulltime. We offer flexible study modes, such as part-time and special part-time (alternating work and study), however, to mature students to help facilitate studying while in employment. It takes longer to complete a diploma or a degree if studying part-time or special part-time.

Soft Skill DevelopmentCredit is given to the development of soft skills in all programmes

of engineering at the college. Our dedicated Department of Educational and Professional Development will ensure that by graduation you have become a capable team player, a potential leader and a valuable staff member – attributes that are highly sought after by employers in industry.

English Language Support It is not easy studying engineering in a language that is not your mother tongue and we know that you will probably need some continuing help with your English from time to time. This is mandatory for fulltime students in Levels 1 and 2; there are also opportunities for language support in Level 4.

Mathematics & StatisticsEngineering requires considerable knowledge of mathematics together with training in statistics.

A dedicated department conducts credit-bearing modules in these important disciplines to ensure you are able to apply your maths competence to your engineering studies.

Experience in IndustryWe believe that it is important for students of engineering to understand something about the ‘real’ world of industry in preparation for employment. For this reason, in addition to site visits and guest lectures, we give students who leave us at Level 2 (that is, with the award of diploma) an industry orientation programme which highlights aspects of culture and ethics in the workplace. We provide a more comprehensive industry orientation workshop at Level 4; this is embedded in the industrial internship module on Bachelor of Engineering programmes.

The Department of Built and Natural Environment is one of the longest established departments in the college. As one of the main departments in the college we are committed to

developing professionals in the areas of the construction industry and the natural environment. We strive to make our programmes as relevant as possible to the context of Oman and the Gulf region.

We offer two Bachelor of Engineering programmes and one BSc programme, which is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), an international accreditation body in the UK.

We offer opportunities for student exchange in the area of water, waste water and solid waste management through our academic partnership with the prestigious National Institute of Agronomic Research (INRA-LBE) in France.

ProgrammeThrough a blend of theory and practical skill development that bridges the gap between industry and academic study, this programme relates to the introduction of the most common practices of civil engineering. It leads on to cover areas such as wastewater treatment, solid waste management, structural design and the rehabilitation of structures. Modules such as Environmental Sciences are introduced to create awareness of environment-related issues, important for the protection of natural resources. Students also learn how to manage the execution of projects by setting goals, planning time, preparing budgets and considering indicators of quality while at the same time being sensitive to environmental constraints.

ProgrammeTo cater for the national and international demand for skilled human resources within the construction industry, this programme has been designed to provide you with a strong knowledge and understanding of your subject, complemented with intellectual, professional, practical and transferable skills associated with construction engineering. Areas covered in the programme include construction techniques, heavy construction equipment and machinery, building services, restoration and rehabilitation, contract administration and risk analysis. It also covers the management of new and existing structures from small projects to so-called ‘mega-structures’ such as skyscrapers, roads, bridges, tunnels, railways, airports, dams

and shopping malls. Modules focusing on design (for example concrete design and steel structure design) are also included in the programme.

Measurement and Cost Engineering is a professional engineering discipline mainly focused on the construction industry. As its name implies, this discipline is concerned with estimation, bills of quantity and project finance but it also deals with tender and contract preparation, legislations, valuation, cost and risk analysis.

The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering was established in 1996 and has formed a key part of the college

since its inception. Our programmes prepare students for industry, government and graduate studies in specialised fields of electrical power, telecommunication, electronic and instrumentation and computer engineering. We offer four BEng programmes, all of which offer an opportunity for internship in industry during the course of study.

ProgrammeThis programme prepares you to be successful in computer engineering practice and to be able to pursue advanced studies in computer engineering and computer science here or abroad. The Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering has excellent laboratory and computational facilities. The laboratories are configured around benches, each equipped with a modern test set up and measuring devices. High speed internet access is available in all the laboratories with WiFi access.

PlacementPlacements can be spent either locally or abroad in various including IT related organisations, banks, petroleum deployment companies, telecommunication

companies, defence, aviation, major oil and gas companies and hospitals. There is a strong demand for computer engineering in different ministries and government institutions, private companies and other multinational

contracting and consulting organisations.

Overview of ProgrammesWe currently offer three taught master degree programmes, providing an opportunity for in-depth study of your chosen field by combining teaching with research:

• MSc in Process Engineering (in academic partnership with University of South Carolina (USC), UK)

• MSc in Maintenance Management (in academic collaboration with GCU)

• MSc in Construction Management (in academic collaboration with GCU)

CCE is proud to have introduced these three unique programmes to Oman. They have been running successfully since 2008, producing graduates with managerial skills and requisite knowledge in the respective fields.

Length of Study It takes a minimum of one year of fulltime study and up to two-and-a-half years of part-time study to complete a postgraduate degree in engineering.

Mode of Study We offer Master courses in a flexible mode to balance study with employment or family commitments whilst still providing all the benefits

and support enjoyed by fulltime students.

Eligibility CriteriaThe basic entry qualification for MSc programmes is an honours degree or the equivalent in a science or engineering subject. If the medium of instruction of your bachelor degree is in a language other than English, you must demonstrate your linguistic ability through presentation of a current certificate showing IELTS Band 6 or above, or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550.

Interaction with IndustryPostgraduate programmes are delivered through guest lectures and case studies from industry. We encourage our students to choose their project from their workplace.

Caledonian Centre for Creativity and Innovation (CCCI)The promotion of entrepreneurship and SME development stems from the vision of His Majesty, Sultan Qaboos, and receives the highest endorsement by government ministries in Oman. At CCE, we have been careful to align our own strategic goals with this vision for the country’s future and have opened the Centre for Creativity and Innovation (CCCI) - the first of its kinds in Oman – in order to encourage students and staff towards innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.

The Centre provides a springboard for budding engineers and academics at the college into the world of commerce and industry

in Oman through entrepreneurship awareness and job creation opportunities. CCCI offers a wide range of facilities and is equipped with incubation, research facilities and other supporting provisions including mentoring and training facilities for students, staff and the community at large. CCCI has also established cooperation and partnership with reputed organisations, including the Malaysian Academy of SME & Entrepreneurship Development (MASMED), University Technology MARA and Technopark Technology Incubation Centre in Trivandrum, India.

Caledonian Student Support Services (CSSS)A department of dedicated and highly experienced staff looks after the welfare of our students at both our campuses and chances are you will meet with a member of CSSS at some point in your college career. The mission of CSSS is to enhance the academic, personal and overall development of our students and to this end, they will encourage you to make use of their many services. Through CSSS, you can also participate in events and activities designed to help you make the most of your study and leisure time at college. The college has a certified counsellor who offers confidential guidance and support to students at every stage of their College life and helps them to explore, clarify, understand and overcome any problems or concerns that may affect their study. Our counsellor also provides specialist assistance at times of

crisis and with long-term issues, including personal relationship and financial difficulties.

AccommodationThe college can provide accommodation for students. Separate accommodation of both men and women are provided at a subsidised cost. All accommodation activities are overseen by CSSS staff who allot rooms based on requests during admissions. Women’s accommodation for 252 students is located at Airport Heights Campus. The College provides transportation for students staying in college accommodation to and from the campus.

Learning Resources The College Library and Information Centre (LIC) is a well-equipped, modern information-

rich facility with 27,000 books and 90 journals in a range of engineering and human resource-related disciplines. There is also a substantial holding of resources specifically related to educational and professional development. Over the years, the LIC has built up an impressive electronic resource and subscribes to the Ebrary database comprising 119,000 e-books, and to proQuest databases comprising 3,700 e- journals.

The library houses different spaces for different activities including quiet study areas, an electronic library, a general reading area and a periodical section on both campuses. The library provides many services apart from the routine issue of books, including a User Orientation Programme, Selective Dissemination of Information and Current Awareness services. On enrolment at the college you will be inducted to all these services and we are always ready to support you in your learning by helping you make the most of these resources.

Other FacilitiesCCE has enjoyed success in Wireless connectivity is available almost everywhere in both our campuses. The service is available to all students free of charge.

You will be shown how to register you laptop with ITSC in order to use this service. The college provides you with a college email account for life.

Virtual leaning or e-learning facility at Caledonian College is powered by Blackboard and associated technologies. Caledonian College has added a new dimension to the delivery of the learning and experience through the addition of IT-assisted materials available

on-line for students. A unique learning environment is offered in Café Fortéy and Café Heights.

Student CouncilThe Student Council of Caledonian College of Engineering (SCCCE) is a student-elected group that represents the student body. Inaugurated in December 2009, the Student Council offers a mechanism for identifying, discussing, and solving student-related issues as well as involving students in the wider community. The Council provides a platform for expressing students’ views, talents and abilities and thereby provides an enriching experience in the college. The members of the council are

professionally accountable for building, sustaining and integrating a strong and functional engineering community that works in partnership with college management and staff, as well as with parents, for the benefit of all students.

Campus Life

We have a very active body of students who run events and activities, with the help of CSSS, throughout the year. These events include Charity Fair, National Day Celebrations, College Day, Blood Donation, Students Fun Day, sports tournaments and student awareness campaigns.

Caledonian Centre for Creativity and Innovation (CCCI) At CCE we encourage student initiative and enterprise. Our unique Centre of Creativity and Innovation nurtures the spirit of entrepreneurship among talented and ambitious students, providing a technology link between the college and commerce and industry in Oman. Various exciting projects supported by this centre include the building of an eco-friendly, energy-efficient car for participation in the Shell Eco-Marathon Competition to be held in February 2015. The team builds on the success of Team Oryx – a team of CCE students so passionate about cars they built their own, and in the process became the first team in Oman and the Gulf to participate in the annual international formula racing event at Silverstone in UK in 2013. Future students at CCE have the chance to build on this legacy or indeed to receive the technical and practical support of the centre in any creative project that has extracurricular or potential commercial value.

Step 1: Submit an Application Form Download an application form from our website (www.cce.edu.om) or collect the form directly from the Admissions Department. You can also request an application form by sending an email to [email protected] .

Fill in the application form and submit the following supporting documents to the Admissions Department:

• Original and copy of General Education Diploma or its equivalent

• Letter of Equivalence (if applicable)

• Copy of passport and ID card

• Original and copy of Higher Qualifications (if available)

• Original and copy of official transcripts (if available)

• Six photographs

• Non-refundable application processing fee

Step 2: Confirm acceptance of offer of admission If you have been made an offer of admission, you will be required to accept the offer. The acceptance of an offer of admission results in acceptance of the conditions and terms stipulated in the offer letter.

Step 3: Appear for the Caledonian Entrance Assessment It is compulsory for all Secondary School leavers (Class 12) or General Education Diploma (GED) / Tanawiya Amma who are wishing to join the Foundation/ Engineering Programme, to write the Caledonian Entrance Assessment( CEA). They can also opt out of entrance test by singing an undertaking to study Pre-Foundation Programme.

The Caledonian Entrance Assessment comprises of three components aimed at testing your skills in Mathematics and Science, English Language, and IT skills.

If you hold an IELTS or TOFEL certificate with the following below scores, you will be exempted from Language component of the examination and also from the Language and Learning component of Semester 1 of Foundation Programme.

• Band 5.5 in IELTS• 550 in Computer-based TOEFL

• 173 in Computer-based TOEFL • 59 in Internet-based TOEFL

Step 4: Receive Notification of Examination Results The outcome of the examination will show whether to confirm your study place in the Foundation Programme or to offer you a study place in the Engineering Programme of your choice. To confirm the admission formalities, you will have to pay a refundable deposit; this deposit will be returned to you on completion of the programme or at the time of your leaving the college.
