Introduction This directory has been created in an effort to facilitate communication and networking opportunities between students seeking residency and residents that have completed a residency. The idea for this type of resource came as a result of a meeting in March 2007 from former residents who have served on the Regional Residency Liaison Committee. Surveys are mailed out to all former NCOPE residents asking if they would like to participate by allowing students to contact them with residency questions. Included in this directory are all former residents that indicated they are willing to be contacted. Former residents provided their phone number, email or both and have given the students permission to contact them with questions about residency. In some cases the former resident has provided some advice or tips concerning residency. Listing of Information This directory is in order by state. A research residency can provide valuable experience in learning how to communicate with engineers, therapists, and others outside of our field. Exposure to a wide variety of device types is very useful in learning biomechanics and other principals, so seek as much exposure as possible. Additionally, I found that one of the main benefits that residency provided over school was context: seeing the full process from evaluation to delivery is very important to obtain a thorough understanding. As your progress through your residency, actively seek to increase your independence level. Talking with OTs and PTs about gait training techniques, etc. will greatly improve your clinical care.

I enjoyed having a residency that has allowed me to do my own patient care and get my hands dirty but have mentors/senior practitioners that are willing and able to answer questions or offer support when needed. My advice is to do in to a residency with a humble and learning mindset and to ask questions. Embrace not knowing anything, use that to ask questions and learn from your mistakes. I found it helpful to be upfront with patients about being a resident but to assure them that you’ll do what it takes to get them taken care of whether it’s asking for help form a mentor or redoing an orthosis. Again, don’t be afraid to seek help. Seek a residency that has a culture of teaching residents and answering questions. Becoming knowledgeable takes years of experience. It won’t all happen during your residency.
